The Federal Government has insisted that it did not pay any ransom to secure the release of the Dapchi girls.

The government reiterated this on the heels of the 22nd report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team of the United Nations’ Security Council, which stated that large ransom payment was made to Boko Haram to secure the release of the over 100 schoolgirls kidnapped from a secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe State in February.

This is contrary to what the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, told journalists at the time that the girls were released following “back-channel” negotiations brokered with the help of some “friends of the country.”

He maintained that no ransom was paid for their release, and also denied that any Boko Haram prisoner was swapped as part of the negotiations.

In a statement issued in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday, the Minister challenged anyone who has any evidence of payment to publish such.

”It is not enough to say that Nigeria paid a ransom, little or huge. There must be a conclusive evidence to support such claim. Without that, the claim remains what it is: a mere conjecture,” the Minister said.

Politics › Buhari Not Healthy, Cabal Running His Govt – Tambuwal by Trendvoice(op): 6:38am On Aug 16, 2018
@NAIRATREND.COM.NG

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has affirmed that it is true that President Muhammadu Buhari has health challenges and also accused a cabal of running his (Buhari”s) government.

Tambuwal also declared that he had been under tremendous pressure to join the 2019 presidential race.

Addressing thousands of youths and students who stormed the Governor’s Office in appreciation of his involving the youths in his administration, Tambuwal said, “We supported Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 to become President unconditionally and we admit that Buhari has integrity but that’s not the only requirement for leadership.

“We are aware that the President is affected by serious challenges of health and is being held captive by a cabal that runs Nigeria for their personal interests.”

Buhari faced a major medical challenge in 2017 that saw him spending the better part of the year outside the country.

He left the country on January 19, 2017, on what the Presidency described then as a medical vacation.

When the trip was prolonged, presidential aides announced that the President would be staying back in the British capital to enable him to collect results of some medical tests he did.

He returned to the country on March 10, 2017, after a 49-day medical sojourn, saying he had never been that sick in his life.

He then gave an indication that he would return to London for further checkup.

After missing public events, including three consecutive weekly Federal Executive Council meetings which raised anxiety in the country, Buhari on May 7, 2017, returned to London for medical consultations.

He returned to the country on August 19, 2017.

On his presidential ambition, Tambuwal said he was still making consultations because of his belief that leadership was a collective responsibility.

He said, “I have been under intense pressure from various quarters in Nigeria including leaders of the country and friends of Nigeria outside the country to contest the presidency.

“But leadership is a collective decision and I have never asked to be made a leader at any time in my life. So, my aspiration will be determined by my people and after that, I will make my political decision known in a matter of days.

On the way forward for the country, Tambuwal told the youths that the future for a greater Nigeria lay with the younger generation, assuring them of his commitment to the welfare and empowerment of this group.

He reminded them that they were the leaders of tomorrow and that tomorrow was today for them to make the right choice on who would lead the country.

“Someone recently referred to me as “a boy”, which is really a compliment that puts me on the side of the youths, who are the strength of our nation,” he said.

He, however, enjoined the youths and particularly the students among them to make sure that they participated in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme, as his government would not accept anyone who refused to undergo the national service to our fatherland.

Nothing disgusts me more than a leader that is not worded. Buhari lacks the mental and intellectual capacity to provide dynamic leadership in this 21st century. Take away paper from him and all he does is to mumble like someone munching fura.

They say he has integrity. Babachir and Maina are laughing at the fools who say such inane things.

Politics › 'We Will Resist Any Attempt To Illegally Impeach Saraki' – Senator Gyunka by Trendvoice(op): 6:41pm On Aug 15, 2018
A Federal lawmaker, Sen. Philip Gyunka, on Wednesday in Lafia, said that any plot to illegally impeach the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, will be strongly resisted.

Gyunka, representing Nasarawa North, said this at a rally to mark his official declaration to run for Nasarawa State governorship election.

Gyunka, who expressed concern over the role played by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole in the matter, said the position of the Constitution on who should be President of the Senate was clear.

According to him, unlike majority and minority leadership, which are from majority and minority parties, a lawmaker can be president of the senate irrespective of party affiliation.

“Besides that, there are conditions for impeachment should lawmakers be dissatisfied with whoever they chose to lead them.

“The law is clear on this. If two third majorities say they do not want him, he will be removed.

“But for Oshiomhole to keep threatening that Saraki must be impeached when he is not a lawmaker, beats my imagination.

“It is obvious from all his threats that there might be plans to do something unlawful, which we will resist vehemently.

“It beats my imagination that Nigeria, a country that should play the big brother when it comes to respect for the rule of law would be disgracing itself before the international community with this kind of development.”

He pointed out that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers were already keeping vigil to stop any of such moves.

“We are keeping watch on their plans.

“If they want the Senate President removed, which is impossible they must have two third majorities.

“They have been attempting and failing. I know they will still make attempts but they will not succeed because I know Nigerians will not allow them to make mockery of the nation’s democracy.

“If you hear a lawmaker speaking, he is speaking the minds of thousands of people.

“How then should someone, who was appointed and has neither gone to the rural areas to feel the pulse of the people, nor held town hall meeting be insisting that a man that was duly chosen by his colleagues be removed at all course.

“Oshiomhole should be educated that this is not unionism. This is an issue that has to do with the Constitution and we will not allow him to violate it,” he said.

On his ambition to run for the governorship election of the state, Gyunka said it was borne out of passion to bring the state out of the woods.

He said it was disheartening that despite huge human and mineral resources among other potentials, the state had not been able to meet the needs of the people.

He called on Nigerians take advantage of the forthcoming general elections to vote for people that have their interests at heart.

He urged them to go beyond expressing their grievances, to getting their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) before the expiration date, to vote for people that would meet their needs and aspirations.

According to him, all the crises we are facing as a nation today is because we keep voting in the wrong persons.

The Nasarawa State PDP Chairman, Mr Francis Orugu, while wishing Gyunka the best in his political ambition, decried the crisis in the national assembly.

He expressed concern at the manner in which the APC national chairman was piloting the affairs of the party.

According to him, a country that is going through so many challenges, particularly in the buildup to the 2019 general elections does not require further tension.

“As leaders, we should not overheat the polity because people are already living in fear.

“I was also a legislator in the State House of Assembly; I know what leadership is all about.

“Unfortunately, Oshiomhole wants to direct that there must be a change of leadership because he is no longer comfortable with Saraki because he left APC.

Orugu called on Nigerians to rise to the occasion by speaking against any action that would subject the country to ridicule before the international community.

@NAIRATREND.COM.NG

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), SKC Ogbonnia, has declared that the report of foreign opposition to President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term ambition was true.

In a statement on Wednesday, he said the rebuttal from the presidency, through Femi Adesina, was self-serving and too far from the truth.

Ogbonnia said: “The simple truth is that neither the world nor democracy, in and of itself, promotes bad governance—whether in democratic, pseudo-democratic or autocratic governments.

“So, the international community does indeed interfere in “the democratic affairs of a sovereign country”, where necessary.

“As a leading figure in selling Buhari’s candidacy to the international community in 2014 through 2015, I know firsthand the role of such democratic nations during the campaign and in the events leading to President Goodluck Jonathan’s historic concession.

“Further, my campaign has been crisscrossing the globe in the past weeks, consulting with fellow Nigerians, as well as influential leaders within our major allies, including Great Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Russia, China, Canada, etc. I can state unequivocally that the emerging consensus among these nations is that President Buhari’s second term ambition lacks in cogency.

“They point to Buhari’s failing health, lack of clear vision, lack of intellectual capacity, an apparent pattern of torpor, nepotism, wanton killings, disregard to rule of law, and a growing sense of disunity and uncertainty in the land, among many failings.

“President Muhammadu Buhari should consider our great party and country before self. The worst omen that can meet Nigeria at this stage of national development is any opening that allows the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to wangle itself back to power. Buhari’s candidacy is squarely that opening, period.

“Therefore, it is incumbent upon more patriots, including Buhari’s henchmen, to join to appeal to the president to permanently suspend his campaign, emulate Mandela, and retire with dignity.

“The future of the ruling APC and Nigeria belongs to a younger generation of leaders who possess the vim and the competencies to cope with the challenges of the 21st century.”

Barcelona have reportedly decided that they are now ready to sell forward Ousmane Dembele.

According to Spanish outlet, Marca, the Catalan club are willing to let the France international leave the Camp Nou for £71million.

Dembele joined Barca from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

The 21-year-old made just 12 starts in the La Liga due to injury.

He scored the winning goal in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup encounter against Sevilla, but it appears that the winger’s future with the Catalan giants remains uncertain.

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with a bid for Dembele, who began his professional career at Rennes in France.
