It depends on the type of Visa you have.
If it's a single entry visa for Ireland, if you want travel to UK or Northern Ireland, you MUST apply for a UK visa, and when you want to return to Ireland, you'll still need to REAPPLY for an Irish Visa.

If it's a Multiple entry Visa you have for Ireland, you'll still need to apply for a UK visa, if you want to travel to UK, but the difference now is that, you won't need to apply for an Irish visa again if you're coming back to Ireland.

Now, as an EU citizen or if you're under the refugee scheme, or any other immigration scheme in the European union that entitles you to free movement , you don't need Visa to either Ireland or UK, u can just be strolling in and out. (but with proper documentations)
Ps. UK is leaving the EU, so this won't apply again very soon.
