Health / Re: How The World Media Is Celebrating Nigeria's Ebola Victory Pictures And Video by TruMantra(m): 5:17pm On Oct 07, 2014
Isn't it fascinating that the US would send medical experts to Nigeria to "learn"? That's one characteristic of sustained success. The ability to learn from any source irrespective of how it is perceived.
Health / Re: Ebola Victim’s Journey From Liberian War To U.S. by TruMantra(m): 5:14pm On Oct 07, 2014
So love is at the root of the spread of Ebola to the US! I wonder how the woman feels right now. Still, after this, if they are smart, they can write a bestseller titled "The man who brought it here"! No more apartment living for them after that.
Health / Ebola Victim’s Journey From Liberian War To U.S. by TruMantra(m): 11:35pm On Oct 06, 2014
DALLAS — The murderous civil war that terrorized Liberia from 1989 to 2003 left at least 5 percent of the population dead, and sent wave after wave of refugees to neighboring countries. To escape the ethnic and political turmoil, more than 700,000 fled from a nation that had barely two million residents when the conflict began.

Among them were Thomas Eric Duncan, the man who brought the Ebola virus to the United States last week, and Louise Troh, the woman he had come to Dallas to visit. After meeting in the early 1990s in a refugee encampment near the Ivory Coast border town of Danané, the two Liberians started a relationship and bore a son, several family members said.

It is not clear what drove the couple apart — Mr. Duncan, 42, who is fighting for his life at a Dallas hospital, has not spoken publicly, and Ms. Troh, 54, who will be quarantined for another two weeks, declined to discuss their history.

But starting in 1998, when Ms. Troh left for the United States — first settling in Boston, and then in Dallas with another Liberian man — they began a 16-year separation.

Not only did Mr. Duncan not see Ms. Troh, he missed the entire childhood of their son, Karsiah, who adapted well enough to his new home to become the starting quarterback for the Conrad High Chargers.

Tragedy befell Ms. Troh in February when a daughter in Liberia died during childbirth. In March, she split with Peterson Wayne, the Liberian refugee she had followed to Texas. It was after that that she and Mr. Duncan apparently revived their relationship, first at long distance, and then when Mr. Duncan landed at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Sept. 20.

“They had had a falling out, and had patched things up,” said the Rev. George Mason, Ms. Troh’s pastor at Wilshire Baptist Church, “and he had come here with the intention to marry and start a new life together. Obviously, what happened has thrown a wrinkle into that.”

And then some. What began as a joyful reunion — refugees from African civil strife seeking to rebuild their lives in America — spiraled last week into a national health scare once only imagined in science fiction. Once again, Mr. Duncan and Ms. Troh found themselves in the vortex of larger forces beyond their control.

The arrival of Ebola with Mr. Duncan put Dallas so on edge that parents kept children home from school and officials with the State Fair of Texas programmed Big Tex, their talking mechanical mascot, to urge fairgoers to wash their hands. It commanded the attention of President Obama and his top health advisers, exposed a series of disconcerting lapses in medical care and crisis logistics and incited a national debate over whether to restrict travel to and from afflicted countries. For Ms. Troh, who spent five days as a captive in her contaminated apartment, a week that started with home-cooked meals and happy introductions ended with the seizure of her belongings by workers in yellow hazardous-material suits.

On Sunday, the director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, said that Mr. Duncan’s medical condition was quite critical and that he was “fighting for his life.”

I just watched this video on a PBS investigation into Boko Haram. It's focus shifts from the atrocities of the terrorists to those of the Nigeria military and the militia fighting against the terrorists. The video is pretty long but worth watching.
Business / Nigeria Listed Among Next Economic Giants by TruMantra(m): 7:12am On Jan 09, 2014
Some good news for the future.

In 2001 the world began talking about the Bric countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - as potential powerhouses of the world economy. The term was coined by economist Jim O'Neill, who has now identified the "Mint" countries - Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey - as emerging economic giants. Here he explains why.

Pretty encouraging article about the future of the Nigerian economy and how it is viewed by some experts.
Religion / Re: Should Men Of God Have Bodyguards? by TruMantra(m): 9:32am On Dec 15, 2013
macof: Am still trying to find a traditional priest with body guards

So how is Israel's God stronger than African Gods?

You make an excellent point based solely on the behavior of the folk that claim to be "men of God".
Still do not judge the master based on the folk that claim to follow him. In this case, you'd be dead wrong.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Is Dead by TruMantra(m): 12:48am On Mar 06, 2013
A lot of uninformed people make comments about Mr. Chavez being a hero of the common man. How many Venezuelans have you met and spoken with? I'm in a class right now with a number of Venezuelans and their position is that the picture of Mr. Chavez that we have is inaccurate. They do not see him as a hero and in fact,it appears that once they verify that this news is true, they intend to celebrate. I hear tales of filling a tank of gas for $1 but not being able to find milk in the grocery store or live with a reasonable sense of security.
This mirrors the views of the majority of Venezuelans I have met and although they might not constitute a representative number, it is telling that none of the Venezuelans I have met over multiple years who live in that country idolize him as many on here are doing.

Religion / Agu Irukwu, Uk-based Nigerian Pastor Wins Britain's Poll by TruMantra(m): 10:04pm On Nov 07, 2011
A UK-based Nigerian anti-gay Pastor, Mr Agu Irukwu, has been voted Britain's Most Inspirational Black Person.

Irukwu, a former investment banker and a senior Pastor of Jesus House (a Pentecostal church) in London since 1994, has been under a series of attack from gay rights campaigners for his outspoken views on homosexuality.

Similarly, British Prime Minister David Cameron has threatened to cut aid to African countries that do not respect gay rights.

Irukwu won 54 per cent of votes in a competition organised by the Mayor of London, Mr Boris Johnson and Metro Report, a local Newspaper.

He was picked from a shortlist that also included U.S. President Barack Obama, former South African President Nelson Mandela and late U.S. human rights activist Martin Luther King.

Other Nigerians also shortlisted were Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, UK-based Nigerian news broadcaster, Ronke Phillips and writer/radio presenter Dotun Adebayo.

O to cradle the ample derriere of Roki while nibbling softly Hotie Tima’s belly button.
To noodle with Chi Baby while painstakingly giving Babe a gentle massage.
To roll “quickly” in the hay with Candyness and then to rest in the bossom of Ogugua88.
This is all I ask!

Sports / Re: Nigeria Vs Argentina 2011 Friendly: 4 - 1 (Eagles Thump Argies) by TruMantra(m): 6:27pm On Jun 02, 2011
Osaze must be biting his fingernails in regret now. And even if he isn't it's a good thing for him to realize that the team is potent without him.
That way when his russian blood starts to boil, his Naija brain will tell it to cool down and behave himself appropriately.

And I completely agree that Nigerians are a hard bunch to please. How can anyone be calling even a B side Argentina team a walk over? Have we forgotten how the Eagles had deteriorated to the point of struggling to beat even fellow African teams? Before Siasia took over, when did we score close to 4 goals in a match?

Ghana celebrated their draw with England and some folk here beamed with pride but when it comes to our own, they claim it's celebrating mediocrity. I tire for Nairaland armchair critics o!
