Mother Of Four Reportedly Burnt To Death In Cross River For Alleged Witchcraft

A mother of four girls, Mrs. Martina Okey Itagbor, accused of alleged witchcraft has reportedly been burnt to death in Old Netim, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The deceased woman was accused of causing the death of two young men who died in a motor accident.

According to CrossRiverWatch, on the 13th of June, 2023, some youths in the community gathered and stocked themselves in a charted vehicle heading to the inauguration reception of the member representing Akamkpa 1 State Constituency and formal Commissioner for Agriculture during former Governor Ben Ayade term – Hon. Okon Owuna.

Unfortunately, they had an accident and two of them lost their lives on the spot, while many of them were injured.

A day after, some of the youths came and dragged Madam Martina out of her house to the main road, alleging that she masterminded the accident and death of the two youths using witchcraft.

The deceased was reportedly beaten and set ablaze by the angry mobs who watched her burn to ashes on the 18th of June, 2023 at about 7:am.

The mob after watching her burn to dust, reportedly swept the remnants into the gutters and washed the road.

A gory video of the incident seen on Facebook shows the half-naked woman being burnt to death by the youths in the middle of a paved road.

According to one of her daughters, the Chief of the community, Ntufam Augustine Nyong Orok washed his hands off the accusation and asked Mrs. Martina to defend herself if she was not a witch.

The matter was said to have been reported to Old Netim Police Station, Akamkpa same April 2023 when the first attack was launched on her but the police were allegedly in fear because gangsters were involved.

Meanwhile, one Christopher Sunday Mbey, a native of Old Netim, Akamkpa, has been accused of spearheading the murder of Madam Martina Itagbor.

A lawyer and founder of Basic Rights Council Initiatives, James Ibor, confirmed the barbaric incident on Facebook.

“Madam Martina Okey Itagbor was accused of witchcraft and burnt to death by the Youths of Old Netim in Akamkpa LGA, Cross River State, Nigeria. This was after a fatal motor accident claimed the lives of two young men. Sadly, the Police stood by while the helpless poor woman burn. The suspects are walking free,” he said.

“Witchcraft branding is a crime. The belief in witches and their power to cause harm is backward and primitive. I call on the Police to bring these suspects to Justice. No witches, No Wizards.”

Group of activists have called on the Cross River State Police Command to arrest the youths who burnt a mother of four to death over alleged witchcraft in New Netim community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.


LIB reported that the deceased, Mrs. Martina Okey Itagbor, was accused of being responsible for the motor accident which claimed the lives of two young men in the community.


In a statement on Friday, June 30, 2023, the groups, Citizens' Solution Network and Agba Jalingo Foundation for Investigative and Accountability Journalism, said Mrs. Martina and the mothers of the two boys who died in the car crash, are members of the Catholic Women Organization (CWO).


The statement signed by Jalingo, urged the police to realise that the gruesome murder of Mrs. Itagbo is one extrajudicial killing that has become too many in parts of the state.


The group described the murder as primitive and unacceptable, adding that such incidents keep occurring in the state “because those who kill innocent women they don't like their faces in their local community, go scot-free without repercussions due to the visible refusal of the Cross River State Police Command to arrest, prosecute and ensure that those who takes the lives of others.”


According to the group, the gang was led by Christopher Sunday Mbey and his deputy, Festus Etim Umoh.

"The Police Command should rise to the occasion to preempt further killings of old women who are defenceless from unexpected quarters. The older and defenceless female population should get protected from summary torture, humiliation and killings,” the statement read.

“Mrs. Martina Itagbor was burnt to death in front of the village Catholic church while a meeting of the CWO was ongoing in the church. They were inside the church watching while the youths burnt one of their members to ashes.

One of Mrs. Martina's daughter, who is also a member of the CWO, was inside the church too while her mother was burning in the fire. She wasn't allowed to come out to do anything to help the hapless mum.

Members of the CWO have visited the mothers of the two boys who died in the car crash to condole with them. But they have refused to visit the family of late Mrs. Martina Itagbor, to condole with them.

They have also refused to condemn the action of the community youths. And her daughter who watched her mother burn to death has been facing threats from the youths since the incident happend.

By their actions, are members of the CWO in Old Netim, Akamkpa, accepting the verdict of the youths that one of their own was a witch and deserves to die gruesomely or are they afraid of their murderous children?

"It will be recalled that, a few years ago, after the death of two Catholic priests, Reverend Father Daniel Omonga and a colleague, in a ghastly car accident, these same youths went berserk and killed four chiefs in the community and burnt houses and properties worth millions of Naira. The youths alleged that the four chiefs that were murdered were witches and wizards.

"Because nothing happened to any of them, they have been emboldened to continue with this barbarism.

“That's why we are calling on the Nigeria Police to please move into that community immediately and do their work. No one should be given the impression that they have a free pass to take other people's lives without retribution. ”.

In January 2016, Danish philanthropist Anja Ringgren Loven saved the youngster, who was later named Hope, after his family abandoned him on the streets of over fears he was a "witch".

Anja said: "Hope was in a terrible condition when we rescued him.

"He was seriously malnourished and had multiple diseases.

"The first two weeks he was hospitalised he was in a critical condition.

"We didn't know if he would survive or not."

But today the young boy, who despite all odds survived his traumatic past, is now a thriving seven-year-old.

This is all thanks to the charity Anja founded — from which he was named — called the Land of Hope.

It has helped hundreds of abandoned children in the past eight years, many of whom were accused of witchcraft.

After being rescued from certain death on the streets he was taken to hospital.

Here he was given medication to kill the worms in his stomach, as well as daily blood transfusions to add more red blood cells into his body.

Anja said: "He was also seriously malnourished and had multiple diseases and the first two weeks he was hospitalised he was in a critical condition.
"We didn't know if he would survive or not."

After this he was well fed and was given an education by the charity — so that now he bears little resemblance to the forlorn boy who touched the hearts of the world back in 2016.
