You mussed the whole point... Have u ever heard the saying. Train a child the way you want him to be so that when he grows he wont depart from jt.... You think the saying carries no weight.. Where I stay, there are lots of charity and voluntary organisations. They give and volunteer cos they wanna do so from their heart.
I asked an elderly lady friend of mine why she volunteered some hours on some particular days to help the elderly, she said it's a great privilege if that is attached on ur biography. Highly valued and respected more than money. Now, this lady is a retired police officer but look at what matters to her.
To earn respect through charity work.

Can you see the difference?
Can you see the mindset?
Now ask yourself, if there is no attachment, can Nigerians help?
Even parents train their children not out of obligation but for the fact that the children will look after them once they start earning. Thats why u see children struggling to be successful as they want to please their parents and not themselves.
More than 90% of Nigerian parents don't care about what their children want and how they want to live their lives.
All is well as long as the money is rolling in.
