Celebrities › Lagos Ranked Second Cheapest City To Live In The World, First In Africa by tstx(op): 10:10am On Mar 16, 2018
Lagos is the second most cheapest city to live in the word, and the cheapest city to live in Africa, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual Cost of Living ranking, which was released on Thursday.

The report examines the world’s most and least expensive cities by comparing factors such as wages and the prices of more than 150 items – including bread, wine, cigarettes and unleaded petrol.

The cost of living in each city is ranked in comparison with New York City, where New York receives an index score of 100 and one extra point equates to a 1 per cent increase in living costs. This is called the WCOL (World Cost of Living) Index.

The cost of living in Africa’s largest city (Lagos) is not as expensive as it was last year, according to the report. This year, Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos, fell 16 places to 132nd place meaning the city is second most cheapest city to live in the world and the cheapest city to live in Africa followed by Algiers in Algeria.

“The relative cost of living in Lagos has more than halved since 2008, which might signal renewed interest from foreign investors, with price levels so low by international standards.” The Economist Intelligence Unit’s.

Coincidentally, the report also concluded that cheaper cities tend also to be less liveable. Which technically means Lagos is the most unlivable city in Africa.

5. Welcome to Lagos by Chibundu Onuzo
The Lagos novel has become a genre in itself, with an outstanding list of practitioners: Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi, Wole Soyinka, Sefi Atta, Ben Okri, Teju Cole ... It is almost a rite of passage for Nigerian authors, for Lagos is Nigeria in microcosm, and there is no understanding the country without understanding the city.

Onuzo’s title is an in-joke referencing the fact that, unlike most cities, Lagos has no “Welcome” sign. If there were a sign for the visitor approaching Lagos, it should probably be one of the epigraphs – made-up quotations from an imaginary local newspaper – that she places at the start of each chapter, perhaps the one that reads: “Lagos is no different from anywhere, except there are more people, and more noise, and more.” Despite the cacophony, and that ominous “more”, it has been estimated that about 2,000 souls daily move from countryside to city to realise their dreams – just like the five main characters who arrive there in search of a new start. Chike Ameobi is a military officer, travelling with Yemi, his subaltern, both deserters unable to stomach their commander’s killing of civilians in the Niger delta. On the way, they meet Fineboy, a fighter with one of the myriad rebel groups, pursuing his dream of becoming a radio DJ in Lagos. They also encounter 16-year-old Isoken, whom they save from being raped by Fineboy and his rebel cohorts, and whose father is thought to have been killed by rebels. And last there is the beautiful Oma, runaway wife of a rich but abusive husband.

this importation of petrol is a deliberate action by successive nigerian governments, the elites have deals with these international oil companies that ensure,we keep importing fuel.its a betrayal of the nigerian people by the leaders, they have sold nigeria to these foreign businessmen

Nigeria’s petroleum industry is the largest in Africa with proven oil and gas reserves of 37 billion barrels and 192 trillion cubic feet respectively. One would be forgiven for thinking Nigerians swim in petrol but no, that is simply not the case.

According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria has a maximum crude oil production capacity of 2.5 million barrels per day and has traditionally ranked as Africa’s largest producer and sixth largest in the world.
(However, in 2017, Angola was largest producer in Afric.) Nigeria’s petroleum industry is the largest in Africa with proven oil and gas reserves of 37 billion barrels and 192 trillion cubic feet respectively. One would be forgiven for thinking Nigerians swim in petrol but no, that is simply not the case.

Dr. Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) recently revealed that Nigeria is the only member country in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries that imports petrol and is currently the largest importer of Premium Motor Spirit. The reason is that refineries are not working to their fullest capacity.

Baru added that, “We actually import one million tonnes of PMS every month into a country that produces oil and gas and has refinery. It is a shameful thing, it doesn’t make sense and that is what we are trying to address.” Indeed it is shameful that a resource rich country like Nigeria would be importing the products of its resources yet that is the truth of most African countries. Countries are (willingly) being reduced to extraction grounds and markets for products they should be selling.

Nigeria says it is engaging investors and other stakeholders to upgrade refineries from the current plate capacity of 445,000 barrels of crude oil per day to at least a million. Why this is being done in 2018 is a wonder but at least they are making a move....
