President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday met with Ghanian President, His Excellency, Nana Akufo-Addo at the State House, Abuja. One of the major contenders in the speakership race for the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has denied the allegation that he was convicted by a court in the United States of America. The Chief Press Secretary of INEC, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the commission was not aware of any evidence of Gbajabiamila's alleged conviction by a US court. He said: "INEC is not aware of any evidence of Gbajabiamila’s alleged conviction in the US." Meanwhile, Gbajabiamila has threatened to take legal action regarding the story. The Director-General of Femi/Wase Campaign, Jibril Abdulmumin, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja at press conference to respond to the alleged conviction of Gbajabiamila by a US court. He said Gbajabiamila had never been accused of corruption and had no corruption case in Nigeria or anywhere in the world. He added that he did not commit perjury in Nigeria or any other country. He said: "For the benefit of doubt, we wish to once again state emphatically clear that Hon Femi Gbajabiamila has never been convicted for any crime in the United States of America, Nigeria or any other country around the world for that matter. "He has never been accused of corruption and has no corruption case hanging on his neck in Nigeria or any where around the world. He has not committed perjury and has never committed perjury in Nigeria or any country of the world. Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central, has weighed in on the power tussle between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the leadership of the ninth National Assembly. However, reacting to the development, Sani, on his Twitter page, said candidates endorsed by “president and executives hardly win” Sani said: “Candidates openly endorsed by the executive for legislative positions in the parliament can hardly win if its a secret ballot system adopted for voting.”Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday declared that its elected senators and members of the House of Representatives are constitutionally eligible to seek election into any presiding office of both chambers of the National Assembly. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says its lawmakers will contest for the positions of senate president and speaker of the house of representatives “if need be”. Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesman, said the party, just like the others, has a right to not only decide who emerges in the positions but to also contest for them. He was speaking in reaction to a statement by Adams Oshiomhole, APC national chairman, that only members of the ruling party will emerge presiding officers except for the minority leader. In the red chamber, APC has 25 seats more than PDP in the senate while it is clearly ahead of the main opposition party by 100 seats in the green chamber. Ologbondiyan criticised Oshiomhole for saying APC lawmakers will emerge leaders in the two chambers, adding that positions of senate president and speaker are not the exclusive preserves of any political party, “but a constitutional right of every elected lawmaker in both chambers.” “It is therefore laughable and amounts to empty grandstanding and self-delusion for President Muhammadu Buhari and the factional National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, to posture as if the presiding offices and Committee Chairmanship in the National Assembly are exclusive rights of the APC”, he said in a statement. “President Buhari and Oshiomhole should wake up to the fact that the National Assembly belongs to no political party but to all Nigerians, who exercise their control through their elected representatives. “For emphasis, Section 50 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) is clear in providing that “There shall be:- (a) a President and a Deputy President of the Senate, who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves; and (b) a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves”. “Section 92 (1) makes the same provision for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of State House of Assembly. “The PDP, therefore, does not only have a constitutional say in the process of the emergence of the leadership of the 9th National Assembly, but will, as a matter of constitutional right, field candidates into presiding offices of both chambers, if need be.” https://all-gists..com/2019/03/National-Assembly-Belongs-To-No-Party-PDP-Tells-APC-Oshiomhole.html?m=1 |

Senator Ali Ndume of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has insisted that he would challenge the decision of the party in choosing Ahmad Lawan to be the next Senate President.
