PoliticsSupplementary Elections: PDP Criticises Buhari On Neutrality Statement by Tundemuttee(op): 5:10am On Mar 19, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as mere posturing the President’s warning to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the states where elections were declared inconclusive by INEC not to expect him to influence the outcome of the supplementary polls.

In a statement on Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, asked the APC in the affected states to prepare well for the polls, restating the President’s promise to ensure that the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) carry out its duties effectively without interference.

He stated that some APC members and others from the opposition were already criticising President Buhari ahead of the election, but he insisted that President Buhari would not compromise his integrity.

But in a statement, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said that the President’s pronouncement was a “fresh subterfuge to divert public attention from APC’s rigging plots ahead of the supplementary elections”.

He added, “The PDP alerts Nigerians, especially those in states where the supplementary elections have been scheduled to hold, to be wary of the antics of the Buhari Presidency, as it has never been committed to free, fair and credible election.”

“President Buhari cannot exonerate himself of the harm inflicted on our polity by the deployment of soldiers in the 2019 general elections, as nobody deploys the military except the President and Commander-in-Chief.”

While urging the military to steer clear of the supplementary elections, taking into account the Presidency’s statement, the PDP also cautioned INEC officials to note that “Nigerians are not ready to accept any results that do not reflect the reality of our victory, which is already known to all.”

PoliticsOkorocha Appeals To INEC Over Senate Certificate Of Return by Tundemuttee(op): 12:02pm On Mar 15, 2019
Governor Rochas Okorocha has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission to issue him with certificate of return as the senator-elect for Imo West.

He made the appeal at a press conference in Abuja today.

“I will advise INEC to do the right thing, to release my certificate so that I can celebrate as others. I want to be in the Senate and it will be interesting if I am there ” Okorocha said.

He urged INEC not to allow itself manipulated by his political opponents, who he said, wanted to freeze him out politically.

Okorocha was not invited by INEC to a ceremony in Abuja where certificates of return were presented to all senators elect and members of the House of Representatives. Okorocha was declared winner of Imo West two weeks ago, amidst claims by the returning officer, Professor I. Ibeabuchi that he made the declaration under duress.

INEC appeared to have upheld the submission and omitted Okorocha’s name from the list of senators-elect invited to Abuja.

Okorocha said his travails are connected to the politics of 2023 and that his opponents are already conspiring to close him out.

“I understand that people are beginning to fight a war of the future now when we are not even yet there.

“The idea is that, do not give Rochas a certificate; you must slow him down until after they have elected the presiding officers, then you can let him come in,”he said.

He added that the idea was to also ensure that he does not become anything in the Senate and to make sure that his governorship candidate son in-law does not emerge winner.

Okorocha ended his conference with some sarcasm, suggesting that INEC excluded from today’s event for a bigger event.

“I think probably, INEC must be trying to do something special, because I understand that once results have been declared and returns made, then you are bound to be issued a certificate of return,”he said.

“Maybe, INEC would want to organise a special programme for me to hand over this certificate of return to me, because clearly, I won and it was a peaceful election, the best you can ever think of,”he said.

PoliticsPDP Confident Of Victory In March 23 Supplementary Polls by Tundemuttee(op):
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it is confident of victory in the March 23 supplementary polls.

The party in a statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Mahmood Yakubu to declare states where the PDP had popular support and as against the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the elections.

“The PDP found it strange that INEC can have two sets of rules in the same election for the various political parties.

” The PDP has been informed that a decision was taken to seize Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Plateau, Sokoto and Kano states in the March 23, scheduled supplementary elections.

“The PDP wishes to state that after our deliberation and interface with stakeholders from the various states where governorship supplementary elections have been scheduled to hold, the party mandates all our members to resist any attempt by anybody to tamper with the will of the people in their states”.

The party’s spokesman said that “In Sokoto state, a stronghold of our party and where the PDP is already in a clear lead, our victory at the March 23 supplementary elections is guaranteed.

“In Benue, the people have expressed their readiness to go into the supplementary election and they are prepared to vote for the PDP candidate, Governor Samuel Ortom.

“They are also aware that by PDP’s current leading margin of over 81,000 votes, it is manifestly clear that there is no way APC, will defeat the PDP in Benue.

“Already, the people of Kano state are standing shoulder to shoulder with the PDP in their pursuit of bringing a government that will be representative and purposeful.

“On no account must Nigerians allow a culture of impunity, where those who failed in any elections will compromise our electoral arbiter and force themselves on the people”.

The PDP also called on the INEC to declare the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike the winner of the governorship election in the state.

“In Rivers state, the PDP restates our demand that INEC should release the results already collated on the governorship election in which PDP clearly won and declare Governor Nyesom Wike as the winner”.

PoliticsINEC Wants To Organise A Special Programme For Me - Okorocha by Tundemuttee(op):
The Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, appears not disturbed by the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to issue him his certificate of return.

The governor who addressed a news conference on Thursday in Abuja said he believed the electoral body was planning something special to present him with his certificate.

“Maybe INEC wants to organise a special programme for me to hand over the certificate to me but clearly, I’ve won and it was a peaceful election,” he said.

INEC had on Tuesday released a list of members of the ninth National Assembly members elected during the February 23 elections.

The electoral body had announced that it would present certificates of return to them on Thursday, but exempted Governor Okorocha’s name, alleging that the returning officer was made to declare him winner of the election “under duress”.

But Okorocha insisted that the claim by the returning officer was only a ploy to cripple his political career.

While the event was taking place at the International Conference Centre in the nation’s capital, the governor told reporters elsewhere in the city that he was duly elected to represent Imo West Senatorial District.

He noted that INEC had yet to offer any explanation as to why his name was missing from the list of senators-elect who were presented with their certificates of return on Thursday.“INEC has removed my name from the list of senators, having been declared the winner. I am in darkness as to what is the reason why I am not invited to collect my certificate of return,” he said.

The governor further criticised the electoral umpire for declaring the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emeka Ihedioha, as the winner of the governorship election in Imo State.

He claimed that the governor-elect failed to secure 25 per cent of votes in two-thirds of the local government areas (LGAs) of the state, and demand that Ihedioha’s victory be upturned, saying he won in only nine out of the 27 LGAs in the state.
