Politics / NNPCL Demands ₦‎4.7 Trillion Petrol Imports Refund by tunene66: 8:40am On Aug 09
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has demanded a refund of N4.71tn from the Federal Government to settle outstanding debts used to import Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, into the country.

The claim was listed as “Exchange rate differential on PMS and other joint venture taxes” on petrol products imported by the company between August 2023 to June 2024.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, at the June meeting of the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee. Our correspondent obtained the minutes of the meeting on Thursday.

Exchange rate differentials refer to the income accrued to banks or government agencies from the difference in value between two currencies at different times through foreign exchange’s sale and purchase prices.

Sports / Ten Hag To Remain Man Utd Manager After Review - BBC by tunene66: 10:42pm On Jun 11
Erik Ten Hag will remain as manager of Manchester United following a post-season review by the club's board.

It is understood they are now talking to Ten Hag about extending his contract, which is about to enter its final season.

United instigated their review immediately after the FA Cup final.

Ten Hag went into the game against Manchester City at Wembley amid a backdrop of reports claiming he was going to be sacked no matter the outcome.

Instead, United's deserved 2-1 victory allowed the club hierarchy to approach the review in a more positive light.

It is understood what are being described as "constructive conversations" with Ten Hag have taken place around the outcome of the review.

All eventualities were considered and the clear preference was for the 54-year-old Dutchman to remain in charge.

Ten Hag is known to be delighted at the outcome, although there have been suggestions he was getting irritated at the time taken for United to reach their conclusion.

Thomas Tuchel is thought to have spoken to new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe last week but ruled himself out of the running, while the club's interest in Mauricio Pochettino also cooled even though he was available after his exit from Chelsea.

Graham Potter, Thomas Frank, Roberto de Zerbi and current England boss Gareth Southgate were also linked with the job, although Brentford were never contacted about Frank and appointing Southgate this summer was impossible due to his commitments with England.

Ten Hag has been on holiday with his family in Ibiza.

Religion / Re: Luke wrongly quotes Isaiah and adds Jesus's Miracle by tunene66: 4:23pm On May 22
There are a couple of differences between Jesus’s quotation of Isaiah 61:1 in Luke 4:18 and the normal translation of Isaiah 61 based on the Hebrew Bible. For one, Jesus omits “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted” (something present in the Greek text as well). He also prefers the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament, LXX) to the Masoretic text (Hebrew manuscript) when He cites “recovery of sight to the blind.” There is still one more change, one we will notice tomorrow. See if you can find it in Luke 4:18!

As usual, we’ll take a look at the words used in the Greek and Hebrew and see how the word “blind” is used throughout Luke’s gospel account.

[By the way, here is Isaiah 61:1 in the LXX for you so that you can compare it to your Old Testament and Jesus’s citation of it: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, on account of which he has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to heal those who are crushed in heart, to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind…” (Isaiah 61:1).]

BLIND, FREEDOM, RECOVERY
So, the big question is why did the translators of the LXX and Jesus talk about the blind receiving their sight when the Hebrew is focused on freedom for the prisoners? Well, I don’t know the answer to that question, but I have a guess. It has to do with the word “freedom.”

While this is the only occurrence of this Hebrew word in the Hebrew Bible, the root of the word is found thirty-seven times. Besides a couple of names, this root word is used to talk about people’s eyes and ears being opened, except, of course, in Isaiah 61:1 where it is translated “freedom.” The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew lexicon suggests that this term is used in Isaiah 61:1 to talk about prisoners being released from a dark prison.

I think that when we look at how Jesus used the term “blind” in Luke, this change will make sense.

The word translated blind is found seven times in the gospel account. In six of those times, the text is referring to physically blind people. In one, however, found in Luke 6, a passage we have gone to several times for assistance in understanding Luke 4:18, Jesus said, “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?” (Luke 6:39).

Like in the previous articles, there are two things at play here: the miracles Jesus performed pointed to greater spiritual realities. Jesus healed those who were blind, but He also helped to open people’s eyes to what the kingdom of God really is.

At amalgmation in 1914 Nigeria consisted of the Northern and Southern protectorates and Crown colony of Lagos.

It was in 1939 that the Southern provinces, as they then called, were regrouped into the Eastern region, with headquarters in Enugu and the Western Region with headquarters in Ibadan. While the Northern provinces became the Northern Region.

Thus at independence in1960 we had the Eastern, Northern, Western Regions and the Federal Capital Territory of Lagos.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Three West African nations of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have withdrawn from the regional economic bloc known as ECOWAS, their respective juntas announced Sunday, accusing the bloc of “inhumane” sanctions to reverse the coups in their nations.

The juntas said in a joint statement read on state television that they have “decided in complete sovereignty on the immediate withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alleging that the bloc has “moved away from the ideals of its founding fathers and pan-Africanism” after nearly 50 years of its establishment.

“Furthermore, ECOWAS, under the influence of foreign powers, betraying its founding principles, has become a threat to its member states and its populations whose happiness it is supposed to ensure,” their statements read

Politics / Nigeria’s Inflation Quickens To 24.08 % On High Petrol Cost, FX Scarcity by tunene66: 12:56pm On Aug 15, 2023
Nigeria’s annual inflation rate rose for the seventh straight month, nearing an 18-year high of 24.08 percent in July 2023, according to the latest inflation report released on Tuesday.

The report published by the National Bureau Statistics (NBS) said the inflation rose to 24.08 percent in July 2023 from 22.79 percent in the previous month and the food inflation rate quickened to 26.98 percent in July from 25.25 percent in the previous month.

“Looking at the movement, the July 2023 headline inflation rate showed an increase of 1.29 percent points when compared to June 2023 headline inflation rate,” it said.

Read also: Nigeria’s inflation quickens to 21.82% after surprise slowdown in Dec

Analysts had expected July’s inflation rate to accelerate further on the back of the high petrol prices occasioned by the subsidy removal and naira devaluation.

“Apart from the sustained uptick in the general price level, the slope of the inflation curve is becoming steeper (i.e. the rate of change in inflation is increasing). This is an indication that the impact of recent policy changes is becoming more evident,” analysts at Financial Derivatives Company Limited, led by economist Bismarck Rewane said in a recent economic bulletin.

They said in a period of one month, the price of petrol has increased twice, first to N488/ltr and then to N617/ltr.

“Diesel price is also up 5.88 percent to N720/ltr from N680/ltr, pushing up transport and logistics costs. They said in addition, the naira touched an all-time low of N893/$ at the parallel market.”

Analysts at Capital Economics added that inflation will accelerate as previously expected due to the removal of fuel subsidies.

“Our view remains unchanged that the removal of the fuel subsidy will add around 4.5 percentage points to headline inflation. The effects of the fall in the naira will have continued to feed through too,” they said.
