Bleep MY LIFE!!! There is a commercial for the removal of fuel subsidy, and apparently, the National Youth Council of Nigeria supports this, BULLSHIT.

"The contractors who built the old refineries are now assuring the Naija govt that the refineries would be up to 95% performance in 24 months."

"We need to show Nigerians that we no longer messing around." I am so glad you realized that you were messing around.

"Port Harcourt refinery will be running at 90% capacity in 24, 12 months even, " This woman,

"100,000 barrels of oil costs 3.2 billion dollars" Why is this woman using dollars? This is Nigeria for god's sake. Can someone check that number?

oh yeah, she is Minister of Petroleum, Allison Madueke

"As a Nigerian, I want to leave a legacy that my children will thank me for." Ehn ehn, so do the protesters.
"We have never referred to anyone as cabals, we have never used that language."

Politics / Re: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: The Face Of Subsidy Removal? by Tunmi(f): 1:28am On Jan 10, 2012
I am for the removal of fuel subsidy but this woman needs a communication course. If you want to convince people, you have to put some effort into it. Actually talk to the people not at the people. Right now, Nigerians are upset because they do not trust the government.

1. The date for the removal of subsidy was in April, it got moved to the first of January
2. The buses the president promised, as inadequate as they were, went from 1600 to 1100.
3. Past experience has shown that the Nigerian government, particularly PDP, does not care about the people.
4. This administration has not been an example. You live a lavish lifestyle, about 1 Billion Naira for feeding in one year, while the people experience hardship. Haba!

It really got to a point where Nigerians could not take it any longer. And now the current administration is promising heaven and earth.

First it was that the money from the subsidy removal would be split between the three tiers of government.
Then it was that the money would be used to build three new refineries. What happened to the ones we had? Why can we not fix them?

Add onto that, the Boko Haram saga. It is really ridiculous.

The govt has to earn our trust but they either do not realize that or they choose not to realize it. They could present a timeline, with actual costs, of what this money is going to go to. Or, they could prosecute one of the many corrupt officials in Naija.

I like the protest because for once, Nigerians are no longer sitting and praying and hoping. They are actually doing something and this scares the Nigerian government. The protest is more than just for the removal of fuel subsidy. It is against wasteful spending and absolutely ignoring the will of the Nigerian populace. They are tired of the government assaulting them whenever they want, really.

@ OP and
cheekswat:

Nigerians never cease to amaze me, and the problem again is that the moment you start canvassing for human rights, especially as it concerns man-lover rights, people stupidly think that you must be man-lover.

I am not man-lover, but i've been involved in this argument more times than i can remember. Even though, I am not man-lover and will never see anything sexually attractive in a fellow man, with an anatomy that is predominantly made up of bone, it is absolutely wrong for the House to pass the anti-man-lover bill. And to top it all, I am yet to hear a convincing argument in support of the bill except that it's not biblical or cultural, and so on and so forth.
I think that Nigerians are selfish, emotional, sentimental and lack any sense of objectivity. We hear people condemn things, and we jump to do the same conclusion without thinking it through, for instance the implications and so on.

For instance, what right does anyone have to condemn what adults do with their lives as long as it's consensual and does not trample on the rights of another or others?
We may not support man-loving-men or what they do, but we have no right to deny them their rights as accorded them in the constitution, as regards freedom of speech, union and the rest.

Thank you both so much.

When people use religious texts to support their point, I see it as an emotional support not one of logic. I have no problem with people who do not like people who are different: homosexuals, white people, black people, handicapped people. You do not have to like everyone, honest you do not. But you just cannot be my friend or someone I respect if you hold those stereotypical views, which is alright because I don't like too many friends.

But you cannot strip their rights away. That is the one thing I will vehemently disagree upon. You may dislike them, and use your religion for a reason, but you cannot deprive them of their rights.

"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me"

Politics / Re: My Proposed 7 Year Single Tenure Was Misunderstood – GEJ by Tunmi(f): 3:03pm On Nov 13, 2011
A 7-year presidential tenure would be a good idea if only our leaders were not known for their corruption. With four years, a year is spent feeling the waters, the next two on doing something or attempting to do something, and the last year on a reelection campaign. 7 years make sense but not for the type of leaders Nigeria has.
Business / Re: Does Travelling Abroad Truly Guarantee A Better Future? by Tunmi(f): 9:52pm On Nov 09, 2011
Apparently living and working in Naija works best for Okija and that is good. Each individual has to figure out what works best for him or her. Travelling abroad does not guarantee success, but it does provide opportunities for success. It all depends on the person and how much you are willing to work.

As per mentions of taxes, that is what taxes are supposed to do. They are supposed to provide a conducive and safe environment for the people that pay said taxes. You reap the benefits in developed countries. In Naija, eh, you provide your own. I am a student and I prefer it here in the States, right now, than in Naija. The country will always have a sentimental value but education abroad is priceless--you learn so much and that's outside of the classroom.

You went abroad and learned and now you're applying it. That's what everyone does really. The problem becomes when there is disillusionment. Your instance of a 500K is more like an uncommon event, maybe a rarity, due to the many unemployed graduates. Abroad, graduates do not have to suffer Naija's unemployment. Yeah, the economy is staggering now but it is not as bad as Naija is right now.

I do applaud you on striking a balance between the two worlds.

BlackLibya:

Thank you Tummy. Perhaps you would like to see my post in the forum I linked? Unlike what Kobojunkie says, it is a point by point refutation of everything she claimed. It is not a ramble, but each point that I made is backed up with evidence and reports.

Kobojunkie apparently refuses to believe that the protesters were violent and had turned into a pogrom before they started being shot at. In fact, as I point out, the unwillingness to shoot is what caused the situation to get out of hand.

What part of the states u in?

Kobo sees it as a fight for democracy. I know and you know and some others know it did not start out as that. When we pointed out her fallacy, she gave the "I didn't ask for that" bit. She can stick to her principles, and I'll stick to mine. Whoever has the time can peruse through these forums and make their own decisions as to whatever.

The protests in Tunisia and Egypt had a lot of people assuming Libya would go the same way. And honestly, the "fight for democracy" has always been the best excuse to invade a nation. Iraq, check. Afghanistan, check.

I read your replies and I will take the time to watch those videos and possibly download them before they go off YouTube. Thank you for that. I'm in Maryland, where are you?

Kobojunkie:

Again .  . . . .

But the People of Libya chose in February to Protest and since then fought for to get DEMOCRACY. Are you suggesting that because their forefathers probably never practiced it before them, Democracy should NEVER be an option they are able to choose for themselves??

Are we saying that because our forefathers never really covered their unclothedness, and probably had bad oral hygiene, we should hence choose to continue in that path because of our past CULTURE? ROFLMAO!! grin cheesy grin cheesy grin
BlackLibya:

when did they say they were protesting for democracy? When it started they were protesting the arrest of a particular individual. Not for democracy. It didnt come about for democracy until Belhaj and his crew decided they were gonna go get weapons, and start attacking govt buildings and police.

Once the west got a hold of a decent enough "story" they made it about democracy. Sharia law and the democracy the West talks about in Libya do not go hand in hand. Sharia law always leads to a theocracy, which is not a democracy, examples can be seen in northern nigeria.
BlackLibya addressed the issue of what the fight was about when it began. And the assumption of unclothedness and bad oral hygiene, don't make such accusations without proof to back it up. It reduces the discussion to an amateur level.
Besides, one who chooses to ignore the past will definitely repeat it.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Libyans Will Regret What They Did To Ghadafi.! by Tunmi(f): 1:49pm On Oct 23, 2011
@putter and @logic101 I agree with you guys. Democracy, or as Fela said "Democrazy," is not for everyone. Each country has to figure out what works best for its people. Besides, African rulers rule for life. Did we forget our history? The kings ruled for life and the role was passed down to their children. And when Ghaddaffi rules for 42 years or so, I say, that is how African rule works. He mirrors the olden days. And as long as his people chose him, na wetin do you?

Politics / Re: Ekweremadu Asks Senate To Legalise Prostitution by Tunmi(f): 4:41pm On Oct 13, 2011
Bawss1:

Prostitution is a victimless crime? Says who? Girls held against their wills and forced into this lifestyle will beg to differ.

Bribing should be legalized too because if you look at it there isn't any victim there, not so?

And even if such a ludicrous argument is to be accepted should we legalize something you agree is a crime? Come on, man just because a vice (and crime!) has existed for so long shouldn't mean we should embrace it as an acceptable form of human endeavor.
Prostitution is not a crime. As per people that are forced into this lifestyle, that is kidnapping and human trafficking. That is a completely different matter. That is fostered by the lack of human rights or help in a nation. Legalizing prostitution, if done effctively (which I doubt Nigeria can do), can help those in these circumstances. To know that prostitution is legal but human trafficking is not is a big difference.

Bribing eliminates fairness. Please don't equate the two.
Legalizing prostitution provides safety to those involved in this practice. The prostitutes and those who go to them should not be scorned at. I'd rather the prostitutes get a license (govt money), enroll in mandatory health classes or pass a health exam similar to a driving test. It may sound absurd but we need to protect our citizens. If they are attacked, we should create an environment that will help them.

Keep your morals and religious views but do keep in mind that everyone does not believe the same things you do.

what you wrote here is nonsense. what is agogo in yoruba, or anfani, malu is not yoruba, eru is cow in yoruba. malu is an hausa word. there is no similarity between yoruba and igbo or hausa , the unification of nigeria allow some group to pick word. but no historical or language similarity.
No need to disagree so vehemently, no be by force abeg
Agogo in yoruba means bell. It's shortened form ago means clock or time. The "secret" one, me I no know o
Anfani means benefit or usefulness
Malu is Yoruba. Maybe it's among Muslim yorubas but it's a borrowed word that is Yoruba. Means cow.
Eru means slave or goods depending on the do re mi sounds

I disagree that there is no similarity between the main groups: Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba. I do agree that the unification of Nigeria allowed the borrowing of words.

Men! Do you know what are you talking about or just a parrot repeats lies without sense.
Do you want facts, here are some;
1- For many years, Gaddafi hanged thousands of youths in universities and stadium and showed it alive on TV terrifying anyone to say anything against him
2- In the last revolution, he killed over 30 thousand civilians and 70 thousand are injured
3- The population Libya is about 6 million, with income last year from gas and oil about 6 billion dollars which means that one million US dollars per annum for everyone. Then the 60 thousands is nothing actually. Moreover, when you visit Libya, you wont see a rich country, in fact many Libyans were poorly suffering while Gaddafi was spreading their country’s fortune on other countries just to be stated the big leader, the king og all kings …. bla bla bla
4- He changed the name, flag, national anthem …etc of his country just to fit his sick imagination, even he imposed his silly “Green Charter” on his people claiming that it is the only book that can take man to the right path. Paragraphs of the book used to be broadcasted on Libyan Radio for years.
If I keep talking about him sick de-mentality, I will need thousand pages. I wouldn’t call him a tyrant but just as he is called in the Arab world “The Crazy Man”. No one there took him seriously

Where is the proof to support all you have stated? I need actual news articles that report the amount dead on that specific day. This is what I want to know? So far, I have yet to see proof of the people Ghaddaffi killed. All I hear is that he killed people, please give me proof. I wanted Ghadaffi to win this fight. I no wan declare am war. It would be amazing, and one for the history books, if he floors them all. It would be symbolic as hell.

There is no convincing you atheists is there? What further proof do  you need for you to accept the simple truth that there is a God? Or do you really believe the poo that the whole earth came about from one "big slam" as these lame scientists who would go to any extent to prove the points they spew in textbooks and documentaries lead you to believe? How can you be open to the truth when you are so close-minded and wont want to view things from other angles/perspectives?
Therein lies the truth. There is no proof that there is a God. And that whole "big poo" thing has been supported. It is not a law yet, but it is a theory--with backing. That thing called evidence is seriously powerful.

Bitter as it may taste on your tongue, you are a living witness that there is a God and the earlier you accept it the better it would be for you.
Now this right here sounds like some old fashioned brainwashing.

OOH YEAH!!! I know. You guys have so much been blinded by all these tales of evolution and unbelievable rantings that life was created out of nothing.
And so have you.

How plausible is that? Life begot life and nothing can be formed out of nothing.
Yeah Francesco Redi and Louis Pasteur, "lame scientists," proved your point. smiley

And to all of you saying that you would only come to terms with the belief that there is a God the moment he appears to you physically! oh Jeez!  Well  might be a shocker but this God we are talking about is a spiritual entity that sometimes takes the form of physical beings to appear to ONLY THOSE WHO ARE WILLING to see him and ONLY THOSE who keep an open mind.
I am open-minded. Honestly, I am. Still haven't seen this guy/lady

and that man/woman who said he/she is waiting for God to reach the mobile phones of everyone at the same time, you go wait tire because funny thing is that this God does not really care about proving a point to you (only if you are a special case---probably someone who has been destined to be of usefulness to him and you are trying to prove stubborn.) Do you go about begging people who have failed to acknowledge your existence to take cognizance of your presence? I bet you do not.
Except he is an all-knowing God. Doing something like this would be like child's play.

It is so sad when I have to take some biology courses and even the professor himself believes that there is a God but still spits all the nonsense he vomits when he is treating evolution. How do you go about to explain the impeccable nature of the earth and the whole solar system i guess you would say by this same "LIFE-OUT-OF-NOTHING" theories.
Evolution has proof. I mean, come on, you wanna deny DNA? Really? Again Redi and Pasteur disproved the whole "LIFE-OUT-OF-NOTHING" bit. There is more than one solar system, we live in the Milky Way. The universe is very old and you have stars, dust, planets, planet pieces, and moons. And it's a process, a long process.

Our God works with faith and in Christianity, seeing is not believing, believing is seeing (yes, I said it!!!) I am sure he is watching you driving your fingers on your keyboard and laughing so hard at you coz you are failing to behold an easy truth. My own is that, nobody can tell me that there is no God coz I am a living witness of God's miracles. if you like, keep believing in your " THERE IS NO GOD " theories. na your toro!

@fyomer (again), in response to your question about your atheist friends, I'd like to inform you that we are the easiest people to get along with. Most of us were raised in religion but as time went on, the scales fell of our eyes and we've learned to take our destiny in our own hands (if there's anything like destiny, lol). The easiest way to get under their skin is to attempt imposing religion on them whereas you CAN'T prove the authenticity of your faith. Believe it or not, atheists are well versed in religion than the average church/mosque goer (personally, I have put several pastors and bible clutching jehovah witnesses to shame by showing how little they know their bible and opening their eyes to numerous contradictions in that book). The most honest people I know are atheists. Atheists are realists. Nuff said!

Religion / Re: Question For Atheists And Religious People by Tunmi(f): 4:21pm On Aug 22, 2011
The debate between religious believers and Atheists have been raging on for quite some time now with each side passionately aiming to disprove the other's claims.
However, no one on both sides at least to my knowledge  has ever given a reasonable answer or at least asked this question enough to make a meaningful impact on the debate. So what is the question?

1. To Atheists and the religious; What sort of convincing evidence would it take would it take for you to switch sides?
I would have to physically see God or an act of God. Actually, if the disciples of the flock, mainly the pastors, could give up their lavish lifestyles: the jets, mansions, then I would be more inclined to change sides. The death of the most evil politicians in Nigeria alone could do it. I said death, not murder. Or have them do a Bakassi-style confession before their death.

2. Also what sort of evidence or event do you think would convince the entire world in one single day to support your claims?
A normal day proves my point. That children could die at the hands of politicans and representatives who steal public funds is a prime example. Another is the fighting in Libya fueled by the West's greed.

3. If eventually, you found out you've been wrong all along, How would you feel?,what impact would it make in your life and what would you do?
I wouldn't feel bad at all. I would want to know why innocent people had to suffer. I would want to know how people could live in a manner that contradicts the religion they worship. I would actually be enlightened.
