A man has had scissors removed from his abdomen which were left behind during surgery 18 years ago, after reporting a stomachache that was nearly two decades in the making. Ma Van Nhat, 54-year old Vietnamese, underwent surgery in 1998 after a car accident and only recently discovered that doctors had left an unwelcome gift behind when they closed him up. Doctors discovered the 15-centimetre (six-inch) scissors near his colon after a recent ultrasound. He had a three-hour operation at the weekend to remove the scissors, according to Ngo Trung Thang, deputy head of general affairs at Gang Thep Thai Nguyen hospital, 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Hanoi. "He is recovering well," Thang told AFP Tuesday. Nhat had spent nearly two decades "eating, drinking and having a pretty normal life", according to Suc Khoe va Doi Song news site, the official mouthpiece of Vietnam's health ministry. The ultrasound that discovered the scissors only came about after Nhat reported stomach pains. Officials said they were searching for the doctors who performed surgery in Bac Kan province in 1998, but have not yet tracked down any culprits. http://newswatch.ng/2017/01/03/scissors-pulled-from-mans-stomach-18-years-after-surgery/

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu has not been sacked, two presidential spokesmen said on Saturday. Special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on media, Femi Adesina, and the president’s senior special assistant on media publicity Garba Shehu both said on Twitter that the attorney-general of the federation was yet to submit the report of his investigation into the allegations of corruption level against Magu. “No truth in story making the rounds that Magu has been removed as EFCC chairman.AGF is even yet to submit his probe report to the President,” Adesina tweeted. The same point was made by Shehu Garba who insisted that the presidency was yet to decide on the fate of the acting chair of EFCC. He said, “No report has been made available to the Presidency by the Attorney General of the federation over the matter. The report of his sack is, therefore, speculative and preemptive” The president had mandated AGF Abubakar Malami to investigate Magu and other top officials of his government who were accused at various times of being corrupt. The order came after the Nigerian Senate declined to confirm Magu as the head of the anti-corruption agency in spite of him being acting capacity for several months. The Senate took the decision after adopting the interim report of its ad-hoc committee, headed by Shehu Sani, which investigated the mounting humanitarian crisis in the North East. Presenting the report, Sani disclosed that “the committee discovered that all contracts from the Presidential Initiative on North East (PINE) were awarded under the principle of emergency situation as stipulated in Section 43 (i) & (ii) but with absolute disregard to subsection (iii) & (iv) of the same Section 43 of the Public Procurement Act, 2007.” The lawmakers have also rejected the confirmation of Magu as EFCC chair, noting that a security report submitted to the Senate by the Department of State Service (DSS) indicted him. http://newswatch.ng/2016/12/31/presidency-denies-magus-sack-report/ |
On April 29th, 2016, I tried to renew my Spectranet subscription using the Diamond Bank mobile app on my phone. Well, I've done several transactions using the app, all without hassles. But on this day, N10,150 was deducted as usual and I thought the fund should reflect my Spectranet in less than 10 minutes. Nope, that did not happen. In fact, till this day, Diamond Bank has not deemed it fit to refund the money into my account after tweeting at them and their CEO; placing a few calls to their customer care call centre and chatting with their CC agents on more than six occasions. It happened again today. My electric metre was running low on units. So I decided to use the Diamond Bank mobile app to buy the units I needed. Again, N1950 was deducted from my account but no units sent to me. Note that I have been using the app to buy units for over six months, so the transaction was perfect. I have contacted the bank's CC centre. I was promised a refund in the next 24 hours. The same story I was told in April. My conclusions: Diamond Bank customer care is arguably inept: their social media team is not proactive; their customer care agents are...well...only say what they have been programmed to say; their CEO nko...? [I am waiting to be proved wrong about my conclusions] Lalasticlala...please, help push this to FP. |
I woke this morning to see a LinkedIn connection notification on my tab. The name of the sender read Nek Laiu, from Senegal. My first thought was to decline. But I changed my mind and accepted the request. Soon enough, the sender sent me a message which was obviously the onset of a scam. Of course, the message was of those generic ones I have received before. I wasted no time in telling the idiot off. So beware of those that send you connection requests on LinkedIn, people.

As the controversies surrounding the alleged disappearance of copies of the 2016 Appropriation Bill personally submitted to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari gains more traction, the Presidency has distanced itself from the disappearance of both the hard and soft copies of the budget proposal. “By tradition, once the budget is submitted, it ceases to be our property,” the Senior Special Assistant to the Presidency on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said on Tuesday. The Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki has met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa since the bill was declared missing. The meeting between the two leaders in his office lasted for over one hour. But the Senate President declined comments on the missing budget when confronted by State House correspondents. However, Garba insisted that the National Assembly and not the Presidency can explain the alleged disappearance, while noting the President had not withdrawn the budget. He said, “Nobody except the President can withdraw the budget. As far as we know, he has not done that. “The copies in their hundreds have been delivered to both chambers of the National Assembly. Enquiries as to where it is should be directed to the appropriate quarters.” http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2016/01/we-have-nothing-to-do-with-missing-budget-presidency/

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said the recent suicide attacks launched by Boko Haram against military and civilian targets were signs that the radical sect was losing the battle to the Nigerian military. Buhari made this claim in an opinion article published by the Washington Post in the United States, where he currently is on a State visit. “Already we are beginning to see a degrading of Boko Haram’s capabilities as a fighting force. In recent weeks, it appears to have shifted away from confronting the military directly to an increase in attacks on civilian areas, as we saw only last week when an elderly woman and 10-year-old girl blew themselves up at a Muslim prayer gathering in northeastern Nigeria. We should not be confused by this change, hateful as it is: It does not mean that Boko Haram is succeeding in its aims — it shows that it is losing,” Buhari said. He explained that the sacking and appointment of new service chiefs and director-general of the State Security Services was informed by the need to re-strategise the fight against Boko Haram. According to him, the new service chiefs will be based in Borno State, where the headquarters of the armed services has been relocated. He said the scourge of insurgency continued to fester in the past because past administration did not muster enough will to tackle terror. “Indeed, the failure of governance, it can be argued, has been as much a factor in Nigeria’s inability thus far to defeat Boko Haram as have been issues with the military campaign itself. “So the path we must take is simple, even if it is not easy: First, instill rules and good governance; second, install officials who are experienced and capable of managing state agencies and ministries; and third, seek to recover funds stolen under previous regimes so that this money can be invested in Nigeria for the benefit of all of our citizens.” While expressing confidence that the insurgents would be defeated, the President cautioned against expectations of quick decimation of Boko Haram. He said: “While we work to defeat the terrorists, I ask the people of Nigeria and the world for resolve and fortitude. The campaign we will wage will not be easy; it may not be swift. We should expect stages of success and also moments when it may appear that our advances have been checked. But no one should have any doubt as to the strength of our collective will or my commitment to rid this nation of terror and bring back peace and normalcy to all affected areas.” Elsewhere in the article, Buhari expressed his resolve to tackle the perennial problems confronting the country. He specifically reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption. He also pledged to instill good governance. “My determination should not be underestimated in other matters. This includes instilling good governance and tackling the scourge of corruption that has held Nigeria back for too long.” http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07/boko-haram-is-losing-says-buhari/ cc Lalasticlala

The Nigerian Football Federation on Wednesday confirmed they have an agreement with former skipper Sunday Oliseh to replace Stephen Keshi as Super Eagles coach. The Nigeria Football Federation sacked Keshi on Sunday saying he lacked “the required commitment” following a row over whether he applied for the vacant Ivory Coast manager’s job. The NFF said on Wednesday it had an “understanding” with Oliseh to take over the side and revealed that the federation’s president, Amaju Pinnick, met the 40-year-old in London on Tuesday. “An offer has been made and there is understanding but we have to work out the final details of the agreement in a few days,” said Felix Anyansi-Agwu, chairman of the NFF technical and development committee. “Of course, the executive board has to give approval for his appointment based on the final terms to be agreed.” Oliseh is expected to come up with a five-year developmental plan to fashion a unique playing and coaching philosophy for all the national teams. To do so, he will have to liaise with coaches of all national sides. Pinnick described Oliseh as having “vast experience and immense knowledge of the game” who would help develop the federation’s aims. “He has bought into our vision and objectives towards the development of Nigeria football,” he added. “He will command the respect of the players and we trust he has the temperament to work harmoniously with the technical and development committee, the technical directorate and the technical study group. “On our part at the NFF, we will give him all the support to succeed as we have been giving to all our coaches.” Talks with Oliseh, who is currently a FIFA-approved coach and runs a training consultancy, are expected to finish by the weekend before a formal unveiling next week, Pinnick added. Oliseh was in the Nigeria squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia in 1994 and played in the 1994 and 1998 World Cup finals, when the Super Eagles reached the Round of 16. He was also in the Nigeria under-23 side that won Africa’s first Olympic football gold in Atlanta 19 years ago. The defensive midfielder played for Liege, Reggiana, FC Cologne, Ajax, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, VFL Bochum and RC Genk in his professional career. He also coached Belgian lower division club Vervietois between 2008 and 2009. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07nff/-confirms-agreement-with-oliseh-as-keshis-successor

Reacting to the massive outcry against their huge salaries and entitlements, the upper chamber of the National Assembly today inaugurated a committee that would review the salaries of lawmakers. A committee that would daft the legislative agenda for the 8th Senate was also formed before the adjournment of plenary till July 21. The senate president, Sen. Bukola Saraki (Kwara-APC) via his twitter handle said the “Committee on Finance to reduce our salary and that of Legislative Agenda will continue to meet” in spite of the adjournment of sitting. He said the senate will reconvene as soon as President Muhammadu Buhari sends ministerial list to the senate. Saraki further emphasised that the Senate was committed to serving Nigerians, noting that it would not be “business as usual” in the Senate under his leadership. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/06/senate-inaugurates-committee-to-review-lawmakers-salaries/ Lalasticlala |
For Cristiano Ronaldo, being named the FIFA World Player of the Year three times may be the highest point in his career as a footballer. But having a galaxy named after him is literally our of this world. Ronaldo himself possesses skills that are out-of-this-worldly outrageous. Real Madrid’s Portuguese ace has had his name given to a galaxy which houses a cluster of stars thought to have provided conditions pivotal for life to flourish. The CR7 galaxy – recently discovered by astronomers – is said to have existed when the universe was only 800 million years old – some 13 billion years ago. The stars of CR7 “ultimately allowed us all to be here by fabricating heavy elements and changing the composition of the universe,” according to Dr David Sobral of the University of Lisbon. Sobral, who led a group of astronomers in discovering CR7, confirmed its name was inspired by Ronaldo and the name of the method used to date distant objects in the universe – Cosmic Redshift 7. Real Madrid star Ronaldo, who adopts the mantle CR7 because of his initials and shirt number, won Fifa’s Ballon d’Or award in 2013 and 2014 and scored a staggering 66 goals this season. The former Manchester United has never been short on confidence but it turns out he has been so much more than a star for so long. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/06/galaxy-named-after-cristiano-ronaldo/

Nigerian defender David Oniya collapsed on the pitch and died after playing just a few minutes of a local friendly in Malaysia on Saturday, reports said. Oniya, 30, went down about three minutes into the game for T-Team and was pronounced dead at hospital around half-an-hour later, the club’s chief executive told The Star newspaper. CEO Syahrizan Mohd Zain said Oniya, who was in his first season with second-tier T-Team, had barely touched the ball in the friendly with Super League side Kelantan in Kota Bharu. “There was no hard running and it was a slow tempo match. It’s only a friendly game,” Syahrizan was quoted as saying. “The match was called off in the 60th minute when we received a call from the hospital that Oniya had died.” Deaths on the pitch, often from heart failure, are not unheard of and Belgium lost two players in two weeks in late April and May. The most prominent case was Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe, who collapsed and died while playing a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon in 2003. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/06/nigerian-player-collapses-dies-in-malaysia/

"But for the expediency of getting the plants running, I have today handed over a letter to Sepco to ensure that they commence full operation of this plant with effect from tomorrow (today). The agreement does not cover Phase 2 because Phase 2 is National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), which is jointly owned by the Federal and state governments," Nuhu Wya, Minister of State for Power said that in 2011. On March 14, 2014, VP Sambo also did the handover of the Phase One SEPCO Pacific Partners Limited, divesting the 35% FG's contribution to power plant. It is clear that Phase One was completed before GEJ's administration and that Phase Two is owned jointly by the FG and state governments. cuteboy2: |
I just saw this video on Youtube and it gave me the chills. The way Dokubo speaks in the video shows that militants in the Niger Delta have enough manpower and ammunitions to cause large-scale chaos during and after the elections. Nigeria does not need another civil war, especially when we are still battling with Boko Haram. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw5PM_mNhAw |
Prominent Niger Delta militants have vowed to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan wins the February 14 presidential election. Mr. Jonathan is of the Ijaw ethnic stock, and the only member of a minority tribe from the South to have ever governed Nigeria. The former militants, who said any attempt to dethrone the President would be seen as a direct attack on the Ijaw nation, threatened to unleash violence on the country and take back Niger Delta oil should Mr. Jonathan lose re-election. According to them the President’s victory in the election is not negotiable. The former militant leaders took the position Friday in Government House, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, at an enlarged meeting that was attended by all the former militant leaders and their followers across the Niger Delta region. Among those in attendance were Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, leader, Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force; Victor Ben Ebikabowei, aka, Boy Loaf; and Government Ekpudomenowei, aka, Tompolo. Also in attendance were the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, and chairman of Amnesty Implementation Committee, Kingsley Kuku; Bayelsa state Governor, Seriake Dickson and his deputy; President General of Ijaw Youth Council, Udengs Eradiri; among others. Addressing the meeting, Dokubo-Asari deplored the alleged intimidation being meted to the people of Ijaw stock in Nigeria, saying the people cannot take it any longer. ”For every Goliath, God created a David. For every Pharoah, there is a Moses. “We are going to war. Everyone of you should go and fortify yourself,’’ he said. He advised those at the meeting to be ready for the battle ahead and declared that Mr. Jonathan would win reelection. Mr. Dokubo-Asari, who condemned the attack on Jonathan in the north in the ongoing presidential campaigns, maintained that the survival of the Ijaw nation rests in the hands of the militants gathered at the meeting. On his part, Boyloaf condemned the attack on President Jonathan in the north, saying nobody has the monopoly of violence. He said there is nothing like one Nigeria, pointing out that oil is the only thing binding Nigeria’s diverse nationalities together. While maintaining that President Jonathan would win the election, he however said if the north takes the power away from Mr. Jonathan, the people of the Niger Delta region would take their oil back. He stressed the need for oneness of purpose among the people, urging them to keep their grudges aside and face the present challenges facing the Ijaw nation with solidarity. ”Keep grudges and sentiments apart. We are ready to match them bumper to bumper,” Boyloaf said. In his remark, Governor Dickson thanked the former militant leaders for their resolve to back the re-election of President Jonathan with greater vigour and assured them that he would relate their position to the President. He urged them to resist the temptation of being recruited by the opposition to destabilize the state. The governor also charged them to shun propaganda and blackmail. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/175532-niger-delta-militants-meet-yenagoa-threaten-war-jonathan-lose-presidential-election.html |

Former governor of Lagos and a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday said he rejected his nomination as the running mate to APC’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, in order to maintain his position as a party leader. Tinubu said in a statement that he had no ambition of seeking any elective office when he and others began the building the foundation of what became APC. “My contribution to the party was never based on the expectation of a later political handout. Nigeria is in trouble and we are well past the moment for such narrow, selfish games. “There came a time during the course of the events when our Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari offered the Vice Presidential slot to me. Being a normal human being, I was deeply moved and honoured that he would consider me for the position. Being a patriot, I had to weigh my potential candidacy in all of its dimensions.” Tinubu pronouncements contrasted sharply with the belief held by many that he was jostling for the VP ticket of APC. He lent credence to this on Tuesday when he accused President Goodluck Jonathan of launching a ‘smear campaign’ against his person in order to block his emergence as the vice presidential of APC. http://newmail-ng.com/new/rejected-nomination-buharis-running-mate-tinubu/ http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/173469-rejected-nomination-apc-vice-presidential-candidate-tinubu.html |

bubakar Shekau, the Boko Haram leader supposedly killed by Nigerian security forces, appeared in a new video released Friday, dismissing claims of a ceasefire deal with the government and dashing hopes of the return of school girls abducted by the group since April. The Federal Government announced October 17 it was suspending military operations against the extremist group after both sides agreed a ceasefire. Part of the deal was to see the return of more than 200 girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents from Chibok in Borno State on April 14. After Boko Haram launched fresh attacks on towns in Borno and Adamawa States, and the girls failed to return on expected dates, the government said more talks were being held and that new attacks were carried out by splinter groups of Boko Haram. In the new video released Friday, Shekau denied any ceasefire deal with the government and said his group will continue to fight the Nigerian state. Shekau denied links to Danladi Adamu, the man named by the government as Boko Haram’s representative at the talks and said Chibok school girls in the group’s custody have all been “married off”, and will not return to their families. “We don’t know that impostor called Danladi Adamu, we have never asked him or his like to speak on our behalf because in this war there is no going back,” Shekau said. “The issue of the girls is long forgotten because I have long married them off.” http://newmail-ng.com/new/shekau-resurrects-denies-ceasefire-says-chibok-girls-married https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/170435-killed-boko-haram-leader-shekau-in-new-video-denies-ceasefire-deal-says-chibok-girls-married-off.html http://news.yahoo.com/boko-haram-calls-ceasefire-talks-claims-lies-222602073.html;_ylt=AwrSyCUzUlRUGQcAeLzQtDMD |
Another post to fan the embers of mutual distrust and ethnic bigotry. I weep for this country. |
The original post is misleading. First, a Adetutu Adesida-Dike is not a king but a regent. Hence, her reign is temporary. Second, if she were to be a king, she wouldn't even be the first female oba (not regent) in Yoruba land. It is on record that a couple of women were installed as kings in Ife and Abeokuta in distant past. This I got to know when I was researching on the image of the woman in Yorubaland. |
munky: I think we have a long way to go in Nigeria. So just because Utomi is a member of ACN, then he is an efulefu. By the way, is Delta State part of Igboland? at least listen to his plan and policies before castigating him. Nnamdi Azikiwe won elections in the old western region based on his oratory and political skills.I sincerely wish all political warlords on Nairaland will embrace your suggestion. It is high time we discused and practised politics of issues and ideologies in Nigeria. This can only be possible if the individual looks at issues dispassionately and objectively; prioritises the achievement of collective good and respects opinions of critics. Alas! One just needs to read some comments on Nairaland to know what's wrong with Nigeria. |
Clerverly: They are learning from you nwokemI hope one day this country will be released from the shackles of ethno-religious bigotry and hatred. *sighs* |
udemzy_udex: where did u get that info from?Dude, I suggest you walk up to any reasonable person who teaches in a State-owned secondary school. I don't dish out fibs on Nairaland |
Uyi Iredia: ' She said SOME new teachers get paid #10-15k monthly' That's what I wrote. Your point is noted though. And I'm sure there is some misunderstanding, I will ask the person again if I'm chanced. I think other states will trail till other urban centres rise in Nigeria. Because Lagos is easily the most innovative based on the assortment of its population alone which gathers the best (and maybe worst) of almost, if not all, tribes. states of Nigeria.New teachers EMPLOYED BY THE STATE were graduates, and as such, they were placed on Level 8 step 1. Therefore, their salary is 54k. That's is the fact. |
@Op, again, like many people who come to disparage leaders (GEJ, especially) you failed to look at issues wholesomely and objectively too. Lagos State has over 500 secondary schools. Each is given not less than a million naira every session to carry out minor repairs and to procure equipment needed. This is in addition to proper government intervention in some schools, and teachers (of Maths, English and Bio) are trained. LASU lecturers are not on strike because of emoluments. Gets your facts right. I wish Nairalanders will learn to criticise and defend our leaders objectively, without any bias. |
@OP, whoever told you Lagos State Teachers collect 10-15k per month lied told you and you gullibly believe that. Seriously? Level 8 teacher in Lagos State collects not less than 54k while normal civil servant collects 52k. Even a level 4 officer takes home over 25k per month. Always get your fact right before you post your opinions, please. Moreover, I'm not sure Fashola is responsible for the planning of Lagos State landscape. To restructure the rambling and unplanned clusters of houses within the metropolis goes beyond the state level. And it is going to be very capital intensive. VERY. Note that by opening up the Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry axes via road remodelling, LASG plans to open up those peripheral axes so as to decongest the city. So I believe. Anyways, I believe Lagos still has a long way to go. But many states in Nigeria still trail the state. |
