This is a roadside argument peddled by a whole presidential candidate. Pegging a margin of $15 is in itself a subsidy. Now that oil is selling at $90, his formula means it'd be sold to the refiner at $45 essentially a subsidy of $45. I don't want to even delve into to the unit cost of production or even the federation share of oil revenue.

One can argue to have subsidies back but deceiving innocent Nigerians that subsidy is an accounting magic is not the way to go

Cement production and distribution is a high energy intensive process.

Dangote's Obajana plant for example generates all the power they need from diesel powered generators and that doesn't come cheap.

There's also the mining process that requires heavy duty diesel earthmoving equipment and dump trucks.

Since Dangote relies on thousands of diesel trucks to move their cement from their factory to wholesalers across Nigeria, that is also another very expensive cost you have to factor.

China and France produce the cheapest cement because both France and China have very cheap energy sources for power generation.

France relies on Nuclear power plants for 70% of its energy needs which makes cement production very cheap.

China's vast energy production which is over 50,000 GW relies on cheap coal fired power plants, series of hydro dams notably the Three Gorge dam alongside dozens of nuclear power plants. This makes energy very cheap to produce in china and hence cement.

Also china has invested heavily on rail to move heavy goods around which makes distributing cement way cheaper.

When we tell you that infrastructural investment is key to economic growth you will be spewing trash that it's better to invest in breweries and Gabriela Obi's Panama account.

It's not true that Dangote cement generates power via diesel generators. They have captive power plants which is fuelled by pipeline natural gas. Where it's not available some of them use coal or fuel oil. And natural gas is cheaper compared to diesel.

Also, most Dangote trucks on the road now use CNG which is a derivative of natural gas. So, your argument about high diesel costs falls like a quicksand.

I disagree. The data captions says it's for internet subscribers. It's not a measure of percentage against a state's population. The mobile operators or NCC are not responsible or do no have access to a state's population data base, I believe.

What might be misleading in this data is whether bit represents only unique subscribers or not. One person can have five active Sims for calls or data.

I see many ignorant comments here. A king, prince, princess, president or whatever are not the benchmark muslims follow. Muslims source their legislation from the Quran and Hadith.

As for the rich going against the dictates of what they claim to practise, it's nothing new. Because many a times, luxury comes with arrogance and belligerence. I get tired of this trope of making it look like foreign investors are more important than local investors, local residents or local citizens. It is a phantom idea that money will come from outside as if those people coming from outside your country care about you. What are you in government for? Foreign investors or local residents?

Nigerian administrations frequently engage in costly international investment summits and globe-trotting missions to woo foreign capital but these jamboree rarely yield any noticeable changes to the people. Government officials will mistake short-term, speculative foreign portfolio investments, which can be pulled out at the first sign of any crisis for sustainable, long-term capital that builds factories and creates local employment. They end up shortchanged. The foreign investors are like patrons of the red light district. They just want to have fun for the night and wake up in the day with their wives. We don't think about building the capacity for local investors and making it easier for real Nigerians to do the building, we want the so-called foreigner. Wake up Soni, no one is coming to save you.

Good insights here. I have had some thoughts along same line. Many times, the commitments are mere MOUs that hardly translate to investment on ground.

It's unfortunate that to the government, the small scale guys who's investing 5m or 10m and is not repatriating the profits outside the shores of the country is thrown aside, while the whites and reds are been courted at the taxpayers' expense. If there's a good balance between both categories, then it's fine.

Even the Ease of Doing Business metric is skewed towards foreign or big local investors. You'd see government constructing a road along a vibrant economic road for five years which kills businesses along that axis.

Comparing first terms of different administrations is unfair and is akin to comparing oranges and apples. The economic conditions vary widely. Tinubu compared to Buhari's early years has far more money compared. Check the price of crude oil from 2015 - 18 and compare to 2023-26. During that period many governors were struggling with salaries until the FG bailed them out. It was in later years that economy got some relative stability that salary payments became a thing of the past. Compare to the current set of governors who receive at least 250 billion Naira annually apart from the LG funds they also hijack. Unfortunately, only a few of them are remarkably different from their predecessors

This sounds good, but Nigerians have heard this kind of promise before. We have had platforms and initiatives such as Open Treasury, the Nigeria Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO), BudgIT/Tracka, and various government budget and financial disclosure portals designed to make public spending more transparent.

The problem has never been simply “Where can we find the information?” The bigger question is: What happens when the information shows that the money was not properly spent?

We have seen budgets published, contracts disclosed and allocations reported, yet abandoned projects, inflated contracts and questionable spending continue across many parts of the country.

So another portal is not automatically a reform. If government really wants this to work, the platform should show allocation → budget → contract → contractor → amount paid → project location → physical progress → audit findings → sanctions where applicable.

Nigerians don't need another website that tells us how much money was allocated. We need a system that makes it difficult to steal the money and impossible to hide what happened to it.

Transparency without enforcement can easily become just another way of publishing information while business continues as usual. The real measure of this reform will not be how impressive the portal looks, but how many corrupt or failed projects it actually helps expose—and what happens after they are exposed.
