To relocate to the UK with your family as dependants under current immigration rules, your wife must enroll in a postgraduate research programme such as an MPhil, a Research MSc, or a PhD. Standard taught Master's degrees MSc, MA, MBA no longer grant dependant visa eligibility.

Dear unergold,

For you and your family to move to the UK via study visa, the most realistic route is via Masters by research, which is highly competitve at the moment due to limited number of universities offering these programmes.

Another thing you need to know is this, from 1, January 2027 (3 months time), PSW visa for masters RD will be reduced from the current 2 years to 18 months. While for PhD PSW visa, the 3 years is still certain.

Option 1
Now considering your situation/ wife situation, 2:1 honours degree in earth science/ geology place your wife in a good position to easily negotiate for masters by research.

Option 2
This might be the best depending on the financial condition, and the quality of her masters degree (PhD grade, publication, conference etc), and motivation. She can easily proceed for a PhD programme. PhD in earth science is a rigorous research though.

If those conditions are met, honestly PhD is a better condition. To me, having two masters degrees can be one masters redundant. Depending on the outcome of your PhD, you can have better opportunities, Postdoc, UK Global Talent etc.

Regardless of both options, 38/40 of age is not a big deal for the study route honestly. I got by PhD in late 30s and I used it for UK Global Talent and I have obtained ILR.
