The town hall meeting is an avenue to interact with the people in the various local government areas in order to know their needs. “Note that, it is only a true leader that can do this. For a governor to go from local government to local government to interact with the people is a testimony of genuine love for the people and we pray that God will strengthen him to continue in this trajectory. “A true leader is one that inserts himself in the shoes of those he/she is leading so as to know their expectations. With the interaction today, I think and I am happy that the governor now knows the challenges facing the local government and that will give him a clue on how to solve the issue or issues.” He argued that many leaders have failed to perform optimally because of their inability to identify with the people at the grassroots, calling on all governors, senators and other leaders to borrow a leaf from Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s Town Hall meeting as that would help them serve the people they are representing at the various levels effectively. Okowa raises alarm over Fulani herdsmen’s attack Published 9 hours ago on March 8, 2018 By Dominic Adewole and Gabriel Efeduku Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday raised the alarm over persistent attacks on people of the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen. He said: “Unfortunately, in our state, we are under a siege, but we are trying to manage it the best way possible. “We have made a statement that we would not support cattle colonies in Delta State because we believe strongly that we do not have enough land for our farmers considering the fact that a lot of our land is already degraded by oil exploration activities. “We have raised these issues along with other states as we have no doubt that the clashes we have here is not limited to Delta State. We believe the Federal Government needs to work out a more fashionable policy that would checkmate this and we are happy that the Vice President is currently leading a committee to look into this. But before then, we would continue to work with the state Commissioner of Police on how to look into the issues involved.” Meanwhile, the governor yesterday said his administration had completed the construction of over 80 roads across the three senatorial districts of the state, even as he pointed out that another 108 road had already been awarded which are at various stages of completion. Our people cannot go to their farms freely because of fear of being attacked, raped or murdered by Fulani herdsmen.” She, therefore, urged the governor to prevail on the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to expedite action on the festering issue of delineation between the state and its neighbouring Edo State. |

Okowa Tasks FG On Speedy Solution To Herdsmen/Farmers Clashes · Lists steps by his administration to manage the situation · What to be remembered for Delta State Governor, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has urged the Federal Government to expedite action on plans to arrest the raging herdsmen/farmers clashes in the country. Okowa stated this on Saturday morning (03/03/2018) while featuring on The Platform, a programme anchored by Sam Omatseye on TVC. He, however, enumerated steps taken so far by his administration to manage the situation while waiting for the FG to proffer a lasting solution to the problem “It is a huge problem. It is there in almost all the states of the country. It is very worrisome. I hope the Federal government would come out with a policy plan on how to tackle this strongly. I know that they set up a committee of some governors and the Vice President with a view to proffering a solution and we hope that solution comes in as quickly as possible because it is a huge problem that creates not only insecurity but affects also the economy of poor Nigerians, of the less privileged Nigerians because when they move into farms, unfortunately the animals can’t differentiate between grass and crops and you find them destroying peoples cassava, destroying yams and other forms of farm produce”. He listed some of the measures adopted in the state to curb the incidences of clashes in the state. “In Delta State, we have been working hard with the Police. We have also created an office to manage conflict, I have a Special Adviser on Conflict Resolution, I also have two other appointees, who work very closely with me and who are specifically detailed to manage herdsmen/farmers challenge. One of them is a Northerner, the other one is a Deltan who was brought up in the North and speaks Hausa fluently. “And to that extent we have been able to minimize, though we still have occasional clashes. We have also involved the traditional rulers, to try and advise them. We have held two sets of meetings with the traditional institution and the farmers themselves and representatives of Miyetti Allah. We held a meeting early last year and we held one two weeks ago. We have also gone ahead to constitute a committee at the local government level which involves the local government councils, Police at the local government level, traditional rulers, Miyetti Allah and some opinion leaders in every local government area to try to handle such issues. But all these we are doing are mere palliative. “There has to be a direction because people cannot just continue to migrate continuously and probably aimlessly into peoples’ farms because that’s not the original intent. It is different if the cattle were moving and grazing on grass and not on the legitimate efforts and produce of people. But the situation has changed. Obviously that is not acceptable and all over the country there has been a lot of cry”. Okowa once again reiterated his earlier stand that there is no land in Delta State for Cattle Colonies. “Ideally, it is for them to have ranches. There have been cattle ranches in the Mambila area for some time. So why can’t they do ranches. And for those who have plenty of lands and want colonies, we have nothing against it. But for us in Delta State and for most of the South South, I do know, we have limited land for agriculture and therefore it is difficult for us to be able to relinquish such land to cattle colony. “Obviously we have a lot of water and water logged land in our area, most of the available land has been degraded as a result of oil exploration activities and the little that is left is being used for agriculture and we hope that a solution would be found soon”. Answering a question, Okowa said he would want to be remembered for good governance and wealth creation. In his words, “I want to be remembered as somebody who brought good governance to play, somebody who, actually, was able to create wealth or engage our youths to learn to create wealth for themselves and to have confidence in themselves. That is why, beyond the issue of the job creation that we are doing, we are laying emphasis on technical education and entrepreneurship. Those are the type of things I want to be remembered for not just because I am a medical doctor but because we believe that once the family is strengthened, then you have strengthen the state and brought peace to the entirety of the state. “And that actually is very key for me. But in the medical area, I want to be remembered for being able to establish the Health Insurance Policy that works for Deltans because it has the capacity of turning the family economy around and improving the health of Deltans. It is something we must design in Nigeria as a whole but I want to use Delta State as an example. I was involved in it in the Seventh Senate, so I want to ensure it works in Delta State. “We have started off with legislation on the Delta State Contributory Scheme Commission Agency. It is my believe that if we stay consistent in the next four or five years, Delta State will be a place to walk up to and understudy things concerning Health Insurance Scheme and that is very important for our people”, he said. |
ASABA AIRPORT TO RECLAIM STATUS AS ONE OF THE BUSIEST, VIABLE HUB IN NIGERIA - OKOWA'S AIDE. Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Communications, Dr Fred Oghenesivbe has commended the management of the new contractors handling the upgrade construction of Asaba International Airport runway, Setraco Nigeria, for the quality of work done within a short period of time. The EA Communications in a statement disclosed that the ongoing speed of work at the airport is a proof of the corporate integrity so far exhibited by Setraco Nigeria; as against the "maradona approach" shamefully displayed by the blacklisted former contractors, Ulo Consultants Ltd. Oghenesivbe who was West African Bureau Chief of World Airnews Magazine and CEO of PPK Aviation International, for over two decades before venturing into partisan politics, posited that Chief Chris Okpuno and Ulo Consultants disappointed the government and people of Delta State, beyond tolerable proportion even though the state government fulfilled its part of the contractual obligations. "When we say that Ulo Consultants is an irresponsible corporate entity, it is meant that it lacked reputation and ability to deliver on several promises made after deliberately undermining the time frame stipulated and as contained in the legal documents perfected by both parties. "Setraco, the new contractors as a responsible corporate citizen has shown reasonable signs that it will deliver as agreed in the month of July 2018; a stride that Ulo Consultants could not achieve in nearly three years; which overwhelmingly gave the impression of advance fee fraud on the part of Ulo, popularly known as 419 among fraudsters and their mugu victims. "Of a truth, the government and people of Delta State were duped by Ulo Consultants and its directors for which Chief Okpuno played key roles as Chief contract negotiator and principal signatory to the unfortunate deal. "We must as a people and government appreciate the management of Setraco Nigeria for taking proactive steps to deliver on promise, a conduct impossible for Chief Okpuno and his unscrupulous contracting firm," Oghenesivbe added. The EA Communications who was recently inducted into the International Communication Association's (ICA) hall of fame; further assured that once upgraded in July or so soon thereafter, Asaba Airport will bounce back to reclaim her enviable status as one of the busiest and economically viable hub in Nigeria. He further disclosed that wide bodied aircraft operated by Air Peace, Arik Air, Aero Contractors and other domestic airlines shall commence scheduled commercial flights into and out of Asaba airport after re-certification by the Federal regulatory agencies. At the moment, its only light aircrafts; Dash 8-300, 400 series and Russian light plane fly into and out of the airport operated by Arik Air, Aero Contractors and Overland Airways, respectively. |
