nagoma: In the early seventies ( 1972 I think) when the change occurred uniformity was being encouraged world wide. More countries were driving on the right hand side of the road except countries with British colonial background. Nigeria was ( and is) surrounded by countries with French colonial history who had always been driving on the right. ( Benin republic, Cameroon, Niger and chad) their drivers use our Nigerian ports and our drivers delivered goods to those countries with much confusion. It made much sense to make that change. America and Britain are simply proud and feel important so they refuse to change from their imperial systems. It is the same with metric system; only in America and UK do you hear of awkward measurements in miles, pounds ,stones , ounces and inches.

Best answer so far. Most countries who share the same border use the same system. I think we also wanted to show our independence.

Those things are just too long sometimes. Besides, if millions of others who use the software have accepted, it can't be that bad. Someone must have read it. I skim it sometimes though esp while installing software 4rm an unfamiliar developer.

Anybody who knows ASUU will understand that even if all their demands are met they'll find a reason to go on strike next year. ASUU strike is a yearly event, they can't afford to miss.

Nigerian students, how logical are you? Have you asked yourself what ASUU stand to loose in this their so-called "fight". Nigerian students stay at home, waste their time, and return to a rushed academic calendar, the Nigerian government suffers bad publicity and other things but ASUU enjoy the break while collecting their salaries. After the strike, they get more allowances. No work, no pay should be introduced, then we'll know how genuine their "struggle" is.

Will meeting all ASUU demands mean they won't go on strike next year?

That may be true. You do not have to go out of your way to learn how to bake. But if you find yourself with a baker who is willing to teach you, and you have the time to learn (perhaps you are on holiday). Should you not learn how to bake instead of going to watch a boring movie or sleep? You may never make money from baking, but you could earn someones regard, admiration with your baking skills. For you, baking cakes is a skill worth having as far as there is a chance you may need it (though its infinitesimal). Imagine this scenario: You have organised an event for the staff in the company you work. For some reason, the cake is supposed to be baked there (you may want to avoid transporting it, or want it eaten while its still warm). Everything is set, but the baker has been delayed (maybe traffic). You could simply start the baking, so that the baker can finish up when he arrives. The cake gets baked in time, you win the admiration of anyone who knows what you did. You would have effectively used skills you just learnt for fun. You could also correct any baker trying to spoil your show with a not-so-well baked cake. I have to say this to avoid misinterpretation, it wouldn't be wise for you to go out of your way to learn how to bake. After all, you have not learnt ALL there is to learn in your career.

No good knowledge or skill gained is truly a waste. But we have to be careful about trying to know everything and then end up not being very good at any particular thing, including our chosen area of specialization. Yes, there is an opportunity cost to learning things you don't see yourself needing immediately. You spend time, energy and maybe money. However, it is better to learn something unrelated to your area of specialization than to sit around doing nothing. The knowledge gained will be worth it. If it is a mentally challenging activity, you will benefit a lot from it mentally. "The brain once expanded to complete a task, never returns to its original dimensions." If it is a physically challenging skill, the health, physical gains will be worth it. Someone also suggested learning on demand which is also very good. But when you need that skill, you may not have the time to go and learn it before an opportunity is lost. You may also measure the cost vs benefit of acquiring it at that time and decide to not acquire the skill. Not knowing that you'll still need it next time. So whenever you have time and cannot learn a skill directly related to your work, learn anything you can get your hands on.

Anybody who believes this eh....I don't even know what to say about the person. These statements seem to come from one of those high school sports movies. 1. Messi can never be so childish. 2. No professional player will ever take that shit from another player, world best or no world best. 3. Other team mates will never allow someone insult another so blatantly and get away with it, even if they all just turn up to watch him play. 4. That team has a coach for God's sake.

ThaProphet: Well written article. While I agree that BBA is corrupting and eroding our cultural values, I think there are so many other factors involved.

Regarding the 'underdevelopment' of Africa, I also feel that BBA is not soley responsible. However, to those who are saying BBA has no connection with the underdevelopment of the continent, consider the following questions...

1. How exactly has BBA promoted Africa besides just the use of the Africa tag?
2. Does the show actually promote African culture and values? Would anyone actually learn any tangible thing about Africa by watching the show? (does anyone think Africa can progress without its culture and values? What most of us call development is actually the erosion of our identity and the adoption of another's identity which eventually makes us become a very poor photocopy of the West. We've had decades of proof and experience of this.
3. When has BBA ever made anyone want to purchase African products and patronize local entreprenuers? (BBA actually does the opposite and please, Multichoice is not African, sorry). If this holds true, then BBA actually contributes to the underdevelopment of the continent because watching BBA makes you crave European products and ideas which is actually detrimental to the continent's local economy.
4. Which BBA headlines actually focuses on the numerous problems facing the continent? Or which task brings the team mates (or is it housemates) together to brainstorm and think about possible solutions to the myriad of problems on the continent? Yes, I know, it is an entertainment show blah blah...who says problem solving cannot be entertaining? Actually, what better way is there to get the youths involved in shaping the future of the continent other than through entertainment? Like the saying goes...'if you are not the solution, you are part of the problem'.

Moral of the rant: please cut the threadstarter some slack. From what I read, he/she never said BBA is the main (or the ONLY) cause of Africa's underdevelopment, he/she simply tried to demonstrate how useless he/she finds the show and its connection to the underdevelopment of the continent.

Also, to those who are saying 'the show is strictly 18 , therefore there is no problem', one question: do you really believe what you are saying? Do you really believe that only adults get access to the show? With commercials of the show on TV and billboards, do you really think that our kids will not be curious? Are they really blocked out because the show is LABELLED 18 ? Personally, I don't see a problem with an adult deciding to watch the show, its their choice. I am just raising questions.

Now, is BBA a good thing or a bad thing? I honestly think it is not intrinsically a bad thing. It is mainly a tool which can be used positively or negatively? Just like a knife can slice a bread and can also stab a person. BBA is an awesome vehicle but the drivers are bleeped up right now (spinning Abiodun Oyewole's statement about hip hop). It is a great platform that is being wasted in my own humble opinion. The show could be even more and more entertaining if it is used positively.

To the threadstarter: I appreciate your observation and the important points you raised but honestly, talk is cheap (no offence intended at all). There will always be bullshit programs and initiatives, its inevitable. Instead of cursing the dark, we should be lighting a candle. Why don't we (those of us concerned) get together and attempt to counterbalance this negativity that we perceive? We could come up with projects which would address the issues we really feel are important. Hell! We could have a version of BBA which would focus on the education of our youths, bring African youths from all over the world together under one roof and get them to come up with ideas and solutions not to have sex with each other.

Let us not put so much energy into criticism because it is wasted effort. I am available for further discussion and action. Concerned individuals can message me. As bad as the darkness might be, the most effective response to it is to light a candle.

A million likes for this post. When I heard about a show called Big Brother Africa, I was just a secondary school kid. I had read the novel, nineteen eighty four by George Orwell, so I was eager to see the African version of Big brother. The name is terribly misleading. Are the things they depict there what Africa and Africans are about?

BBA is not solely responsible for under-developing Africa, but it is the most useless show I have ever come across. What does this show promote? Is it funny? No. Is it educative? No. It is not even entertaining for God's sake. It is just por.n being shoved in our faces and called "Big Brother Africa". A competition for the title of "most morally decadent person in Africa". If u don't believe me, why has Beverly Osu not been nominated for eviction?

I know OAU, Futminna do not require further maths from aspiring engr. Students. As for accepting second choice, most federal universities may not accept that. Try a state university, preferably your state university. You will stand a better chance of being admitted as an indigene.
