Celebrities › Re: International Record Deals : What Nigerian Artists Need To Know by Ugosample(m): 10:19pm On Jan 18, 2017
lawyer:
I don't think the Op understands what it means to be signed by a major record label and what it entails. I used to be an entertainment lawyer and i have seen first hand what goes into signing an artist to an international label and the risks the label takes signing artists. Most of the complains here deals with money and exposure the artist claims he is not getting from the label but no one wants to talk about the underlining issues that deals with signing a record contract.

First of all you have to know that a record label is a business and its number one priority is to make money. No label would sign any artist that would not rake in profits. Its not a foundation or NGO where they dash out free money for artists to waste and buy expensive things for no reason. Every dollar must be accounted for. What people don't know is that every time they sign an artist for Bleep million dollars, that money is like a loan given to the artist in advance to shoot videos, record songs in studios, hire producers, pay radio djs and vjs, push their cds to music bloggers, writers and radio stations, pay for equipment, pay for the artist's image and P.R etc. In return the label must recoup what they have given to the artist in terms of sales of their cds, concerts, appearance, endorsement and merchandise. That's why they have to control their image and creative rights so that they can successfully market the artist to recoup their money.

The problem arises when the artist agrees to take a huge advance of the Bleep millions he signed for and spends it recklessly. They spend so much on videos that won't yield any profit. They spend a lot purchasing flashy things to maintain a flashy lifestyle. They spend a lot on costly studios productions and mismanage the money. They move with a large entourage and pay for everything the entourage purchases. They are always popping champagne and living a lavish lifestyle in clubs and frolicking with women. Meanwhile the contract states that they must sell above 100,000 or more cds so that the label can break even but the artist has not even finished recording the songs talk less of marketing the song to the public. The contract also states the sharing profit formular for both the artist and the label ( maybe a 60/40 sharing ratio..60 FOR LABEL AND 40 FOR ARTIST) but the artist has already taken his advance of the 40% but he expects the label to still share the cd sales profit and concert profits when the label has not recouped anything. How do you expect the label to act when its running at a loss?

Most artists don't know the Label is like a bank. They borrow you an advance and expect a full repayment with interest. Once the Label is having difficulties in achieving its aim, it becomes aggressive and engage in drastic cuts to limit the expensive lifestyle and actions of the artist. Its that moment you begin to see the artist complaining that the label is cheating them but you would never see the artist tell the public that he was given Bleep amount of money in advance which they squandered. They expect the label to share the cd sales 50/50 or the concert profits 50/50 because they have achieved the fame they craved for without enriching the pockets of the label. Nobody would agree to that.

Look at most artists today. They don't have lawyers that study their contracts, they don't have accountants to manage their funds, they don't have sensible managers that advise them on what to spend and what to save. Its all about achieving fame and spending lavishly to impress the public without working hard to make money for themselves and the label. The label would not allow them go and break the contract without them recouping their profit and if the artist attempts to run, they would set a plethora of lawyers on them to conform until they recoup their money or break even. There is simply no free lunch contrary to what the public thinks. Some artists are so ignorant that they sign 5 or 6 year deals with a label because they promised them Bleep millions but they forget that the contract is binding as long as you took their money. They even sign without lawyers and pose for the cameras for bloggers to hail them as the next Michael Jackson only for them to start crying after 1 year when they don't see the projected income they were dreaming of. So if you are going to blame the Label also remember the artist is also at fault. No body would dash any artist free money to waste lavishly and not suffer the repercussions. The label is not their family member. Its a business pure and simple. If you collect their money, you must work for it. Its that simple!
I learnt a lot from you bro.
Thumbs up for tho eye opener

DeepSight:
I have to disagree with you here, Old Friend.

Nigeria is a most abnormal country suffering horrendously disagreeable psychosis.

For only in such a country can a person who committed treasonable felony by being involved in the military overthrow of a constitutional democracy - which plunged Nigeria into 16 years of egregrious military dictatorship ever be considered, much less permitted to contest a presidential election. The plain truth is that such a person should be in jail: should long have been convicted of treasonable felony and should never even contemplate the presidency of Nigeria.

But because we are such a sick people with a dim sense of history, we permit such sacrilege and even celebrate it as positive change.

In truth, whereas you attempt to portray Buhari as a peace loving democrat: this is false - you have forgotten the hundreds of yourth corpers killed in the North as a direct result of his provocative utterances to Northern youth regarding the 2011 elections. It is not only by going to court that one shows that one is a democrat: one also shows it by being large hearted enough in dicey situations which could cost lives. Buhari did not do that and that in 2011 and that cost many hundreds of lives. Do you also remember his comments about the dogs and baboons being soaked in blood? What is wrong with you Sir?

Contrast him with Jonathan who left without a whimper. Do you know the real truth about the 2015 Election? Jonathan's life was a risk and Buhari's people had let him know in no uncertain terms that he would be assassinated if he did not "comply". I was close enough to key actors in the corridors of power at the time and I know what I am saying for a fact. In fact, the USA and Britain also advised him in similar terms. All of this was done for Buhari, who you here attempt to cast as a law abiding Democrat?

If Nigeria were not a sick nation, we would not permit ex military dictators, particularly those involved in, or who were beneficiaries of a coup that truncated a constitutional democracy, to be elected President. It is quite unthinkable, but anything goes in Nigeria.

You are quite wrong. Only a court Judgment can put aside the State of Emergency and as per the Constitution of Gambia, Janmeh may remain under a State of Emergency.

This in no way means I support his detestable actions: I am speaking strictly legally.
Lol...
Who would have assasinated Jonathan as president?

If he had won, nothing would have happened to him, and because he is not a wahala person, he did not set the Niger delta on fire with his utterances,

Nobody would have assasinated him

Nigerians... Blacks... We have issues.

1. In commuter buses, we use our legs to hit the person next to us just to say move. Instead, ''kindly move'' would do.
2. We envy neighbors because they have two cars then we start running around to buy ours because we feel intimidated.
3. We kiss our bosses ass just to spite other colleagues behind their backs then feign ignorance when the bubble burst.
4. We are hypocrites of the highest order. Quick to judge but not apt to examine our own lives.
5. We are so dogmatic, barbaric and backward in thinking. Yoruba movies have regenerated our logic minds.
6. A pastor can ask us to eat grass and drink animal urine or eat cow dung so as to get a miracle.
7. We walk sheepishly, shoulders down, heads bowed and lack confidence in ourselves.

We are our own problems and I doubt if this will ever change in a century because the cycle is innate, inherent, and has already become systemic.

Anyway, have you visited www.HRtechnique.com today for updates on DPR, NIBSS, Airforce recruitment etc. Push your careers ahead of others.

Not directly, but relatives of mine, but in one of them's case, a widower (with 2 kids) married a single mum and did not have kids together and they are not facing challenges that an "unblended" family will not face.

Sorry to say, but your proposition about exporting agric products will even lead us to more poverty, instead we should export value added goods from our agric produce, like high quality chocolate instead of exporting cocoa just like that, or palm oil and cooking oil instead of just the palm fruit.

NO country gets rich by exporting just agric produce in their raw form, Senegal and Uganda are reference points for you.

I hope you red my ensuing comment. I dont agree with abuse or violence, but I said that seperation for longer periods could have resolved issues.

Coming from a blended family, i can tell you that there will always be uneven distribution of love and resources. More especially once this men start producing his children with the women. Unless they are rich. In the event where there is limited resources, women/men normally start singing a different tune, passing the buck of financial responsibility to the childrens biological father.

Yes a woman or man can love someones child but can never love them more than she/he would love her/his children if he/she had children. There will always be imbalance and disagreements and complaints on distributing the resources.

Example, If a man doesnt agree to buying a child an iphone 7 before they are say 18, but the woman feels that its no big deal. She will only think that its because its not his biological children, if it was his children, probably he would have agreed, even if its not the case.

Being from a blended family setting, and having experienced it, I am not for it, unless one partner is dead. Blended families are not ideal and easy.

If I was her, I was going to date but not marry yet until my kids are of legal age.

Once again one you have kids, its not always about you, the welfare of your children should come first.

I wish her well though. wink
Yours is just one example
I know MANY blended families that worked and worked well; even though it is not perfect.
There is nothing wrong with a blended family, if both parents work hard, especially in the first few years to make things work.

Nora to me did the right thing by taking a walk, life is too short to be miserable.

They weren't involved!! My God where do you people get such tales fromhuhhuh Involved how? ECOWAS was not involved one bit or you think Ivory Coast is some tiny nation like Gambia that ECOWAS can be aggressive towards anyhow? ECOWAS was practically begging Gbagbo whiles insurgents from Bouake and Yamoussoukro in northern Ivory Coast marched on Abidjan. These rebels supporting Alassane Dramani Ouattarra were covertly assisted by French forces present in the country then. In fact these French forces located and captured Gbagbo but when the TV cameras came they dissappeared leaving just the Ivorian rebels.

I remember that war very well back then in 2010 because my girl friend then (Ivorien) had just returned home for holidays and she was caught in the centre. I remember when I call her regularly I heard gun shots and helicopter sounds because she stayed close to the Presidential Villa in Cocodi, Abidjan.

You still do not get his point. He didn't say other tribes are not trilingual or bilingual as the case may be but the frequency of Igbos being able to speak other languages is the highest of all 3 major tribes of Nigeria. The Hausa tribe comes second and the Yoruba tribe comes third. That's just another interpretation of his point. It is not generalizing, he is just stating an observation which I myself have noticed to be true.

This parallel is similar to that of the Jews who are often speakers of many world languages, in addition to their native Hebrew and for this reason they make very good spies to other European countries as they blend in easily.
You know many Israelis /Jews cannot speak Jewish right?
