How did they get there? The main import of my post is why should Nigeria be celebrating 4GW of electricity in this age when SA is producing such high amount? For your information more power comes with more presence of power consuming industries. From what you posted the problem was a temporary one. Please learn to acknowledge facts and buckle under when you have to. Something is fundamentally wrong with our power sector and it's glaring. My point is just as we have power generation challenges in Nigeria, SA also has its own power challenges even in the midst of their enormous generation capacity. you should present the whole side of the story and not pick only parts that fits your narrative.

while south Africa generates more electricity than Nigeria, the country also has large challenges with electricity that has resulted in rationing of power and blackouts. here are some of the challenges from the same source as yours. Power Shortage: 2007 - 2008 [edit]
In the later months of 2007 South Africa started experiencing widespread rolling blackouts as supply fell behind demand, threatening to destabilize the national grid. With a reserve margin estimated at 8% or below,[7] such "load shedding" is implemented whenever generating units are taken offline for maintenance, repairs or re-fueling (in the case of nuclear units).

Eskom and various parliamentarians attributed these rolling-blackouts to insufficient generation capacity.[8] According to their claims, the solution is the construction of additional power stations and generators.[9] These, they said, will take time to construct and commission. 2012 was frequently mentioned as the earliest possible end to the power shortages.[9][10][11]

Investigative television show Carte Blanche reported that part of the problem is related to the supply of coal to the coal-fired power plants.[12][13] Several other causes have been postulated, including skills shortages[9] and increasing demand for electricity around the country.[14]

It appears that the steps that Eskom took to maintain some of its plants, increase coal stock piles and improve plant performance had led to them suspending load shedding from May 2008 onwards.[15]

Effect on the Economy [edit]
In January and February 2008 global platinum and palladium prices hit record highs as mines were first shut down and subsequently restricted in their electricity use. South Africa supplies 85% of the world's platinum and 30% of palladium. Mining companies estimate that hundreds of thousands of ounces of both gold and platinum production will be lost every year until the crisis passes.[16] Estimates on the direct economic impact are not yet available but, given South Africa's reliance on precious metals exports to finance its current account deficit, traders have severely downgraded the currency.

Due primarily to the impact on mining companies, economists have downgraded GDP growth forecasts significantly. The current consensus hovers around 4% (well short of the 6% government target), with the caveat that growth could reduce by 20 basis points every month under certain circumstances.[17]

Banks and telecommunications companies have generally continued to operate as usual thanks to existing backup systems. Retailers initially reported large losses due to spoiled frozen and chilled foodstuffs, but are rapidly installing generating systems. Many large factories have reported it impossible to carry the capital expense required to keep operations uninterrupted. However, the largest (including aluminum smelters that can be effectively destroyed by outages of longer than four hours) have guaranteed service level agreements with Eskom and have been largely unaffected.

Big companies with international investors have also been affected by the electricity crisis and have had no choice but to announce these effects to the international community, bringing the situation to the attention of potential foreign investors.[18]

Crisis management [edit]
As of February 2008 blackouts were temporarily halted due to reduced demand and maintenance stabilization.[citation needed] This drop in demand was caused by many of the country's mines shutting down or slowing to help alleviate the burden. However, regularly scheduled mandatory load shedding started in April 2008, to allow maintenance periods of power generators, and recovery of coal stockpiles before the winter, when electricity usage is expected to surge.

Expanding generating capacity will see an estimated spend of R300 billion over the next five years,[citation needed] with around 20 000 megawatts of additional capacity due to be online by 2025.[citation needed] However, neither short nor long term funding has yet been secured and the downgrading of Eskom's credit rating has ignited speculation of a capital injection by the government.[19]

Controversy [edit]
This entire situation is surrounded by controversy. Decision makers and leaders both in Eskom and in the government predicted in the late 1990s that Eskom would run out of power reserves by 2007 unless action was taken to prevent it.[20]

There is also criticism that Eskom exports electricity to neighbouring African states when it doesn't have the capacity to meet South Africa's demand.[21] Eskom, however, announced on 20 January 2008 that it had ceased to export power.[22][23]

The government claims that the shortage caught them by surprise since the South African economy grew faster than expected. However, their target growth rate of 6% per annum was not reached from 1996 to 2004. The average GDP growth rate during this period was 3.1%.[24]

The problem with coal exploitation in Nigeria is that the holders of the mining lease do not have the funds nor the technical. Ability to exploit coal. As usual in Nigeria we bring politics into everything. It is so sad, those who have the capacity are not awarded the lease.
i read recently that FG is about to revoke all none producing lease agreement. And award them to cocompanies with the capacity to mine the. Lease. Kogi State has the largest deposit of coal inNigeria but the biggest company there, dangote. Who needs the coal. And has the capacity to mine it has no mining lease.

Nine months ahead of the expiration of his tenure, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has already set up a handing-over committee to compile notes for the incoming administration in the state.

Akpabio disclosed this yesterday at Methodist Church Nigeria, Ikot Ebido Oku, Uyo, during Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly thanksgiving service marking the end of the third legislative session and the beginning of the fourth legislative session of the fifth Assembly. The Governor said the committee is headed by the state Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Cecilia Udoessien.

Akpabio blamed his inability to execute more projects in the state on paucity of funds, noting: “It is not everybody that can see what is happening in the state. We don’t have money to do everything. There are some communities we have not yet touched. It is not that we don’t want to touch those communities, but we don’t have the money. We have done feasibility studies. We have gone round the state and we know the problem of every community in the state. We don’t have the money to solve the entire problems at once.”

The Governor, however, announced plans by the state government to commence soon the dualisation of Aba-Oron Road with an underground tunnel.

On the success of his administration, he attributed it to the cooperation of the state legislature, remarking: “All the credit for the achievements of this administration belongs to God Almighty and the success of my administration is due to the cooperation of the state House of Assembly.

“The proper implementation of the budget from the House has brought about the developmental infrastructure in the state, which has made every Akwa Ibom person proud to belong to the state. I must also thank members of the House for their cooperation with the people of the state through their legislative duties, which has in turn brought peace to the state.”

The Governor thanked God for protecting and keeping all members of the House alive. He also thanked the members for coming to church to thank and honour God, hoping that God has granted their hearts’ desires.

On the negative write-ups against the Speaker in the mass media, the state chief executive appealed to him not to dwell on what critics may say about him but to continue in his legislative duties and “learn to absorb all the abuses with smiles.”

Akpabio then called on some governorship aspirants in the 2015 general elections to stop abusing him and his administration in the media but rather to say what they would do for the state as they are the ones to contest for the seat, saying that he has forgiven all those who attack him using the media.

Speaking earlier, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sam Ikon, explained that the thanksgiving was an annual event to thank God for every session, His mercies to them and for the preservation of life of every member of the House.

Ikon said in spite of the various challenges due to critics in the media, the House has drawn inspiration from God and from Governor Akpabio, pledging that the House would continue to stand by the Governor to ensure that the people of the state benefit from his good works.

The Speaker stressed that the lawmakers would remain committed and focused in ensuring the peace of the state. He thanked the members of the House for supporting the Governor in moving the state forward and the Governor for clearly recognising the separation of power and for the development strides in the state.

It would be very difficult for anyone to convince me that the GDP of NW>SW except i see hard evidence to back it up.

Instead of speculating can some one check figures from The CBN, Ministry of finance, Bureau of statistics and put out actual figures, with data and quoted sources.
We must learn to back our information/claims with data and verifiable sources!

I have learnt to always crosscheck/ cross reference most news items published by the Nigerian press as they do not do due diligence in checking their figures, most of them are very lazy and just publish press releases without fact checking.

Stephen Keshi has seemingly walked away from talks to return to coaching Nigeria's Super Eagles National Football team.

Despite the fact that he had been negotiating with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) since July, nothing has been finalized and Keshi told BBC Sport that he can no longer afford to wait.

"Talks over a new contract shouldn't drag on," Keshi told BBC Sport. "I can't wait any more - the NFF is not serious."

The former coach, who led the team to the round of 16 at this year's FIFA World Cup, also claims several other African countries approached him with coaching opportunities. “I've had about seven countries approach me in the last two months but I kept them all away,” he said.

Keshi's says the NFF's recent string of problems is taking vital focus from the success of the team. "I understand the ongoing crisis facing the federation but the national team should not suffer from such at this crucial stage," he said. "Sadly, I also think attention is focused more on the
upcoming NFF elections and the national team is simply not a priority."

Marginalization can be real or perceived! and is a major factor in oil politics in Nigeria, Its marginalization whether real or perceived that creates room for balkanization to occur.If the majority of the people come to a concensus that their interest in the group they belong is not protected the will seceded. the good news is that these people have had long years of interacting with people from both the areas that will form the proposed Oil rivers and present Akwa ibom and they know where their overall interest will be best protected and hence their decision to stay in their present state.

The truth is the people of Eastern obolo and ibeno want to remain Akwa Ibomites. No amount of enticement can change that. The majority of the indigenous people of the LGA share the Akwa Ibom heritage, but like you said there are always some people who can be bought especially disgruntled politician who failed in the bid to secure one office or the other, but those are the fringe group and are in the minority.

And by the way the people of those areas like any oil bearing areas in Nigeria are very vocal and not Afraid to speak their minds on any issue, years of fighting the injustice of Nigerian govt and the oil multinationals operating on their soil have taught them that one thing. If oil rivers was what they wanted no one will be able to stop them from speaking out loud on the issue.

IGBOSON1: ^^^What saved Akwa Ibom is that we're not in a military dispensation! If not, Akwa Ibom would have been balkanised by fire or by force! All they need do is find a handful of greedy saboteurs from within, with little or no moral scruples; bribe them with promises of fame, wealth, connections in Abuja, and such materialistic piffle! All the sabo's need do in return is stick to the script by crying wolf where non exists; saying how they've been marginalised and brutalized in Akwa Ibom; that they're an autonomous ethnic group in their own right; and that the larger Akwa Ibom are doing 'attache-by-force' to thief their oyel and have access to the sea!

Think i'm kidding? Egbema, Ndoni and Oyigbo are cases in point, and stand as testament to the shenanigans that goes on in this country! Also, they've succeeded in confusing some Ikwerre on their Igbo identity......having them believe that even though they bear Igbo names; have towns and villages with Igbo names (which they've recently changed to 'rumu' to distance themselves from the larger Igbo nation); and have Igbo traditions and culture......even though they have all these, they've been convinced to rewrite their history, and now claim to be the 'Ikwerre Nation' that have no links with Ndigbo! Go figure!

Akwa Ibom is one. our eastern obolo and ibeno brothers also know that no matter the state they go to they will still be minorities and especially after the marginalization they suffered in the hands of our Ijaw brothers during the sharing of the Amnesty empowerment for ex militants. They already know how they will be treated in an ijaw majority state.

At least in Akwa Ibom they have learnt how to navigate the murky waters of the political space in the state to get what they want as minorities rather than learn all afresh with a new group. They say the devil you know is better than a "friend" you cant understand. And this year the gov. of the state has been zoned to Eket senatorial zone where they belong so they stand a chance producing the next gov. from that zone who will correct or address any perceived injustice that the oil bearing areas have faced.

The Ibibios are democratic in nature unlike some other majority groups in Nigeria that oppress the minorities case in point the current governor is a minority and became governor because the state zoned it to his senatorial zone The ibibios supported it.
Of the six ethnic groups in Akwa Ibom its only the Ibibios that have the numbers/ population to win an election without the support of any other group but they don't use their numbers to bully or necessary hug onto power.

Akwa ibom has six ethnic groups : Ibibio, Annang, Oro,Ekid, obolo, and Ibeno. there is no ijaw land in Akwa Ibom. Ibibio, ekid,oro and ijaw are part of the people groups found in Eastern obolo and ibeno LGA's hence it will be very difficult to excise those regions because even though the obolos and ibeno are the majority in their LGA but their LGAs are not homogenous, they also have minority ibibio(from onna, Ikot abasi and mkpat enin ), ekid, oro and ijaws in their LGAs

Problems/challenges occur so that people can fix it. The flooding of the Airport is one of such. Now the authorities know there is a flooding problem at the airport, They now need to build drains to prevent future occurrence.

pazienza: I don't think the opinion of chiefs from other parts of Akwa ibom matters in this issue. The only people whose opinion matter are those of the people and chiefs of Ibeno and Eastern Obolo.


If the leaders and people of Ibeno and Eastern Obolo say yes to Oil rivers state, there is nothing the rest of Akwa ibom can do about that, and i suspect this was why they kept this oil rivers state a secret during the conference,as they didn't want the Akwa ibom delegates, majority of whom are not from Ibeno and Eastern Obolo to have a say in the matter.

OPEN LETTER TO NATIONAL CONFERENCE LEADERSHIP AND MEMBERS.
PROPOSED OIL RIVERS STATE: COUNT IBENO OUT

The attention of the elected political office holders of Ibeno extraction has been drawn to newspaper and online publications on the alleged inclusion of Oil Rivers State as one of the States recommended for creation by the National Conference.

While we do not oppose the creation of an additional State, we vehemently reject any attempt at balkanization of the State with the aim of taking out Ibeno Local Government Area or any other Local Government Area for that matter out of the present geopolitical structure of Akwa Ibom State. This does not mean that we are opposing any people outside Akwa Ibom State from agitating for Oil Rivers State, but we state unequivocally that delineation of such a State MUST NOT INCLUDE any portion, village, community or square metre of Akwa Ibom State. We oppose it and for good reasons.

First, Ibeno Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, with the longest coastline in Nigeria is the primary and major reason Akwa Ibom State is the current largest oil producing State in Nigeria. That accounts for the huge revenue profile of the Federation and of the State from the Federation Account.

Secondly, although most people of Ibeno are not happy that there is no commensurate Federal and State development presence in the Local Government Area to justify its uniqueness and indispensability in the wealth and fortunes of Nigeria and Akwa Ibom State, we believe that is not enough reason to jeopardize, severe, balkanize or in any way the communality, brotherhood, ancestral antecedent and our common heritage in Akwa Ibom State. In Ibeno, a brother does not run away from the house because his other brothers have denied him of his right portion of fish in the bowl of soup.

Thirdly, this whole talk of State agitation can only be a miscalculated and wrong approach to crying out against marginalization.

Fourth, we believe the Federal and State Governments are sensitive to our plight and will not look the other way when there is a cry for development through a uniting, not dividing and arm-twisting approach of State creation.

Fifth, although, we no more have a Commissioner in the State Executive Council today, the Majority Leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh, is from Ibeno LGA representing Esit Eket and Ibeno State Constituency. We have a Paramount Ruler who is highly respected in the comity of Royal Fathers, a Local Government Chairman and Vice Chairman, 10 elected Councilors and leaders of thought. We speak on behalf of the people that elected us that we were neither consulted nor our consent sought in this ill-fated project. We would have counseled against it because we have the ears of the grassroot electorates of Ibeno people.

Sixth, it was the Queen of England that declared Ibeno a Protectorate in 1882 when the King of Opobo levied war against Ibeno people in order to annex Ibeno as a part of her territory. The Command Paper is there for the record. Now that we are the elected representatives of Ibeno people, we will not shirk in our responbility to ensure that our communality with Akwa Ibom State is protected and preserved.

Seventh, any agitation for State creation should be a corporate decision of the people of the State.

We, the elected representatives of Ibeno people, therefore, urge the National Conference to expunge Ibeno Local Government Area from the proposed Oil Rivers State. Ibeno will engage in any open process of State Creation when all the people of Akwa Ibom State will agree to determine how the State should be further divided when the need so arises.
