My fear is that Akpabio may have a disagreement with his successor and this ibaka project will be stopped indefinitely since its a state govt project. We need this ibaka to work.

Meanwhile, I thought Bayelsa is building their own sea port too? How is that project?

Ibaka deep seaport is not a state govt project it an IPP with the private investors owning 60%, federal govt 20% and state govt 20%. this is a huge project, Construction of Phase 1 alone is expected to cost $3bn. state govt cant afford to go it alone.

Akpabios dissagrement with his successor cant and wont stop the project, the land for the port has already been accquired and the certificate of occupancy handed over to Nigerian port authority, all the hydrological surveys for the deepseaport , design EPA etc has been concluded and the Etebi - Enwang road which will provide access road to the site is ongoing.

The fact that Ibaka deep seaport is ongoing does not mean other states cant build their own ports too. In my opinion every state that borders the water and has the resources to develop a port should do so just like airports has become mundane in the near future seaports in Nigeria will become mundane too there is no stopping that.

the idea of holding other states back is slowly dying in Nigeria courtesy of GEJ, bayelsa,lagos,ondo,ogun,delta,rivers,crossriver can have their own seaports alonside Ibaka seaport market forces should determine which one succeeds.

tomakint: With a massive company as this, the multiplier effect on the economy on the long run can put Nigeria in the top 20 Industrialized Economy in the next 10 years if well utilized. Akwa Ibom is the bomb, with a standard stadium, world class hotel resort and now this.....I see no reason if the sea port at Ibaka is opened how this blessed State will not be a force to be recognised in the whole world. The seaport project will be realized soon, all preliminary surveys and permits has been completed.

This is goodnews for Akwa Ibom and Nigeria in general kudos to all the stakeholders for bringing this project to Nigeria.

BabaTony: Unfortunately the Nigerian way that you are willing to follow is very misleading and leads to miseducation. YES The lekki bridge has some sections that are supported by pillars on both ends BUT if you notice the central section is supported by CABLES attached to the tower (unless you never cared to closely look at the picture i posted), this is the part of the bridge that is in suspension QED. if you like join the politicians to call a cat a goat just because they are all animals, it is your headache. As a well educated Nigerian I will NEVER tell the world i will call things what they are not just because a politician built it and called it that PERIOD.

Your choice, politicans will call their projects whatever they like there is nothing you or I can do about it, . and you are entitled to your opinion on all counts, just as i am to my opinion. and thats the last i will say on this issue.

BabaTony: Ujoinme, first of all YES the lekki ikoyi link bridge is a SUSPENSION bridge, as you see from the picture below, there is a tower where the suspension cables are linking the suspended section of the bridge. It is our responsibility as educated people to draw the line between politics and educate our people appropriately. We should all know "world class", "massive", "state of the art" when we see it. If the government did not know or made a mistake you shouldn't help spread or propagate that mistake or ignorance. Lets make it our responsibility to do and say the right thing at all times. The bridge is a nice well built one, quite high too no doubt about it but its not a suspension bridge for heaven sake. Kudos to the government. I have cared to post other examples of suspension bridges to educate other readers. Cheers

i will not be labour the issue,nigerian politicians can call their projects what ever fancy name they like i dont care as long as they build the infrastructure for the benfit of the people. names and terminology dont matter to me in Nigeria as they often do not reflect whats on ground. you are free to disagree with my view, but thats my view. and btw a lot of people including my humble self will disagree with you captioning lekki - ikoyi link bridge as a suspension bridge if we stick to proper utilization of terminology. but that dosent mean i dont appreciate the project or value it, I will call it a suspension/cable stayed/ international/ world class if thats what the lagos state govt wants it to be called. i will do same for all of gov. orjis legacy projects and likewise Akpabio's suspension bridge, Its the Nigerian way.

N/B A suspension bridge is supposed to be supported by cables with limited use of pillar/piles as seen on the pictures of true suspension bridges at the golden gate bridge and the others you posted. lagos bridge is supported by pillar/piles. the cable is just fancy- my view.

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, on Thursday, flagged off the implementation of the $1.5billion (about N260billion) Quantum Petrochemical Complex in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State.

The state-of-the-art facility will produce a range of petrochemicals including polyethylene, polypropylene and methanol.

He also commissioned the Uquo Gas Processing Facility built by Seven Energy and operated by Frontier Oil Limited, an indigenous company.

Speaking moments after unveiling the plaque of the petrochemical project, Jonathan observed that the plant is a major investment which will create jobs and and rob off on other industries in the country.

He praised the chairman of the Board of the company, Mr. Jim Ovia, for his commitment to the development of the nation, saying, "you have decided to bring the money back home."

Jonathan, who described Ovia as "one of those making Nigerians proud," similarly thanked the owners of the land upon which the plant is being built as well a the Ibeno community for ensuring its security.

In his remarks, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, pointed out that the owner of the plant decided on his own accord to site it in the state without being lobbied.

He lauded the President for personally coming to perform the groundbreaking ceremony, thus providing it with Presidential Seal of approval.

"Mr. President, you said nothing can stop you, not even ebola, to be personally present to put the Presidential seal of approval on the project," the governor remarked.

Speaking earlier, Ovia disclosed that the project is being executed at the cost of $1.5billion.

He noted the importance of the project because of the derivatives it will produce which are necessary to produce other essential goods in the country.

Ovia said: "The importance of developing capacity within the petrochems industry should not be underestimated. Petrochemicals provide the foundation for manufacturing industries; for example, construction, packaging, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, etc.

"Petrochemicals are vital to our everyday life: the plastic bottles that allow us to drink sanitary water, the clothes that we wear, the fertilisers that we use to grow crops, the tires on our cars that brought us here today, the shovel that we use to break the ground, the cosmetics that ladies among us applied today, the pharmaceuticals we take everyday to enjoy a healthy life; all are derivatives of petrochemicals of some form.

"This petrochemical park will enable a whole host of local industries to sprout and flourish: providing significant employment opportunities for Nigerians."

Ovia commended the President for his presence at the occasion, describing as a demonstration of his support of the transformation of all sectors of the country.

Babatony what will you call the lekki - ikoyi link bridge? the Lagos state government calls it a suspended bridge and in my opinion there is nothing suspended about that bridge.

States can call their infrastructure what ever they like, i was just quoting the Akwa ibom state govt. caption for the bridge its not my opinion.
I dont care what fancy name they choose to call their infrastructure as long as they build it.

I usually take words like international, world class,massive, state of the arts etc and in this case " suspended" attached to infrastructures anywhere in Nigeria with a pinch of salt.

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Saturday in Ile-Ife that the PDP candidate for the Aug. 9 Osun governorship poll, Iyiola Omisore, would emerge victorious.

Jonathan spoke during a courtesy visit to Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Ooni of Ife.

“Omisore’s time has come …God’s time is the best,’’ he said.

The president, who described Ooni as a blessing to the present generation, thanked him for his support.

He said Omisore was a “fantastic material’’ that Osun needed at this time to take the state to the “promised land’’.

I urge support for the PDP gubernatorial candidate, cast your vote for him and Omisore will not let you down, Jonathan said.

Earlier, Sijuwade had called for a minute silence in memory of the souls of departed heroes.

The traditional ruler named such heroes as the late Obafemi Awolowo, Bola Ige, Alhaji Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano and Igwe Okagwe, the Obi of Onitsha among others.

Sijuwade described Omisore as a humble person, recalling that he “stepped aside’’ for former Governors Bisi Akande and Olagunsoye Oyinlola when he prevailed on him.

According to him, it is only God who has the power to appoint the president, governors, and traditional rulers.

On the unity of the country, Sijuwade said:“Without unity the country’s progress will remain very slow.’’

He appealed to traditional rulers to join hands with the government to rid the country of insurgency.

“With their support, Boko Haram insurgency and other activities militating against national growth will become a thing of the past.’’

He said the South-West zone and particularly Osun needed more federal presence in line with the president’s transformation agenda.

Sijuwade also called on the government to continue to give critical sectors – agriculture and aviation a boost.

He solicited the support of the president for the revival of cocoa, completion Ile-Ife water dam and the expansion of Ife-Ibadan expressway. (NAN)

jazzydee: Its a done deal Osun is going to PDP. Bye APC osun is PDPnation. APC came into osun through the backdoor of court order. it has never won a major election in osun state and never will. There will be no ballot stuffing/stealing which is their stock in trade and hence APC will lose osun.

I agree all of ogbeni's nepotism, outsourcing of contracts,political positions and looting of the commonwealth of osun to benefit him and his master at lagos will end on the 9th of August.
Osun people will take charge of their state and expel all looters from their enclave, by voting APC out of office.

imagePresident Goodluck Jonathan yesterday in Osogbo, Osun State capital, declared that the Federal Government would not allow miscreants take over Osun State.
The President, who stated this in Osogbo while speaking at the grand finale of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governorship rally held at Osogbo township stadium, referred to the post-election violence that erupted shortly after 2011 general election during which 10 members of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, were killed.

He then warned that the Federal Government would not allow acts of lawlessness, adding that Osun State would be properly policed to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and create atmosphere favourable for the conduct of election.

Jonathan said: “I thank the people of Osun for the warm reception. It shows that you love the PDP. Our party respects Nigerians and traditional institution. Traditional rulers have given us their support and prayers. We are expecting a birthday gift from you all for the Vice President Sambo next Saturday. You should know what I mean by that statement.


He also justified the use of soldiers during elections, saying the measure was meant to protect the people’s votes from being stolen.
“We won’t allow a repeat of 2011incident or allow miscreants to take over Osun State and cause havoc. We would ensure that Osun is properly policed. Anybody who calls himself a thug or militant would be dealt with,” he continued.

“We must tell you that we are capable of conducting a peaceful poll, where your votes would count. One man, one vote, one youth, one vote. We asked Nigerians to go and queue for voters’ registration. Some of you spent hours to register and collect your voters’ card. Some people said we should not bring soldiers so that hoodlums would come take away your ballot boxes. Say no to that. Our votes must count”.

He said PDP remains the only party that allows internal democracy to thrive by allowing members to select whoever that would be presented as flag bearer in any election from the president to the councillors.

Jonathan promised to work with Senator Iyiola Omisore to develop the state and pleaded with the people of Osun State to vote en masse for him on August 9.
Also, Vice President Namadi Sambo described the PDP flag bearer as a proven technocrat with track record and wherewithal to lead an elite state and called on the electorate to vote Omisore as governor to enable him plough back his wealth of experience to properly develop the state.


In his remarks, PDP National chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, said the party had been expecting the governorship election in Osun State since it lost power in the state through court to the APC in 2010.

He congratulated Omisore on his anticipated victory, saying any doubt before the grand finale of the party about the chances of PDP at the poll had been erased with the turnout at the event.

The chairman of PDP Governor’s Forum, Chief Goodswill Akpabio, while addressing the gathering, said the forum had already brought a registration form of the group for the PDP candidate because of the confidence he has in Omisore’s ability to win the state back for the PDP.

Akpabio stated that like he predicted victory for PDP in Ekiti State and it came to pass, he said that the outcome of the Osun State governorship poll would favour the party.

Also speaking, Ekiti state governor-elect, Ayo Fayose, said further shock awaits APC after Osun State governorship election, saying his emergence was still a mystery for the party.
