Well, I think the reason is not what OBJ has said here. I believe it is more to do with becoming the first sitting president to be defeated/removed through the ballot.

GEJ must have reasonable confidence that GMB will not prosecute him or send him to jail. Of course some of his close allies may later be tried but I don't see GEJ himself being prosecuted except there later comes a revelation so damaging and embarrassing for Nigeria that GEJ is revealed to have been part of.
