President Barack Obama has spent the afternoon touring a Senegalese island where Africans were shipped across the Atlantic into slavery and he called the visit a 'very powerful moment.' Obama says visiting Goree Island Thursday with his family helps them fully appreciate the magnitude of the slave trade. They toured the museum at the Maison des Esclaves where slaves were gathered before going through the 'Door of No Return' and being forced onto ships bound for North America. Obama also said that, as an African American and an African-American president, the trip gaves him even greater motivation to stand up for human rights around the world, and the visit came just hours after he clashed with his Senegalese hosts over gay rights. He said the island is a reminder of what happens when civil rights are not protected.
How touching! I hope to visit this place with my family as well!

22-year-old man, Babajide Bashorun, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police for allegedly kidnapping a female undergraduate of the University of Lagos, Akoka, and raping her. The suspect denied the accusations against him instead he claimed that the lady was his girlfriend. He admitted to have taken her nude pictures and gave them to his friends whose identities he gave as Aje Mayowa and Babajide Ademuyiwa, both final year students of Architecture also of UNILAG. The incident, as gathered, occurred two months ago at 1, Ajose Street, Enu-Owa area of Lagos Island. But the female undergraduate was silent over the matter until her relations abroad who stumbled on the nude pictures on the internet contacted her mother last week.

Narrating how the incident occurred, the female undergraduate said: “Babajide came to our house to treat our dog. In the process, he requested for my phone number and I reluctantly gave him. He started calling me and told me he would like to go out with me. “But I told him I already had a boyfriend whom I loved. Yet, he kept calling me, saying he was not interested in just going out with me but wanted to marry me. Aside that, he kept monitoring my movements and at a point, I deleted his contact from my phone. “I was returning home for a weekend in April , a car stopped by my side at Idumota bus-stop. Jide was sitting beside a driver who was unknown to me.
“On sighting him, I walked past. But the next thing he did was to hold me by the hand, dragged me into the car and drove to his house.

“When he got home, he started beating me and tore my clothes, asking what I wanted that he could not give me. He instructed me to unlock my phone and when he discovered that I used my boyfriend’s name as password, he resumed the beating. “At a point, he gave me his phone to speak with some of his friends who told me I was in for trouble, for turning down a member of their unnamed cult, threatening that they would kill me for treating him shabbily. “Thereafter, he raped me and when he was done, his friend took his turn despite my plea. When he saw I was bleeding, he stopped and started begging me. At that point, he brought out his phone and started taking my nude pictures. I made attempt to cover my face but he hit me on the head with a bottle and continued taking the shots.

“I begged him to allow me call my mother to give him some money for my release but he refused. I also appealed to him to delete my pictures when he started begging me.
“I stayed in that room all night till the next day when he went out to get me some drugs. Immediately he stepped out, I tried the door and discovered it was not locked from outside. I quickly changed into one of my dirty clothes in my bag and escaped. “But I could not tell anyone at home. When my elder brother asked what the problem was on seeing the blood stained clothes, I told him I was involved in an accident and when my mother insisted on knowing what the problem was, I told her I fought with a course mate. She insisted on going to school with me on seeing the magnitude of the injury but I prevented her.
“Barely had I settled down than Babjide called, threatening to kill me if I disclosed what happened to anyone. As if that was not enough, his friends also called and threatened me as well.”

However, on his part, Babjide claimed that the undergraduate was his girlfriend, adding that they only had a fight on that fateful day. Expressing shock over his arrest, he said: “She is my girlfriend. We only fought in April and have resolved the matter. “What led to the fight was her request for money to buy an iPad which cost over N100,000. Because of my love for her, I managed to raise N70,000. She visited me on that day and I advised her to change her way of living which included going to club. I also accused her of flirting with other men. Along the line, we started fighting and I used a mop stick to hit her and in the process , took shots of her and sent the pictures to my friends. But I did not tell them to paste the pictures on the internet.”

Police sources hinted that efforts were on to arrest Mayowa and Ademuyiwa alleged to have pasted the victim’s nude pictures on the internet, while Babajide had been charged to court for kidnapping, rape, conspiracy, attempt to commit murder, indecent assault, and assault occasioning harm.

Now this is really pathetic and guys like this should not be allowed to be lurking around waiting for their next victim. What sort of punishment would you prescribe for the man?

If an unmarried couple have sex they are considered husband and wife - and would have to ‘divorce’ if they split, an Indian court has ruled. When two people of legal age, 18 for a woman and 21 for a man, ‘indulge in sexual gratification’ this should be seen as a 'an act of total commitment' and marriage by law, a judge at Madras High Court said.
The court said that the registering of a marriage as well as a wedding ceremony were only formalities to gain society’s approval.

It also said that once two people have sex this ‘becomes a total commitment with adherence to all consequences that may follow’, including needing a decree of divorce should they want to sleep with someone else. In addition, should either of the two wish to register the ‘marriage’ they can have their marital status declared by a Family Court as long as they can supply proof of a sexual relationship.
Once declared by the court, the person can be established as the other’s spouse – whether the other party approves or not.

If applied to Naija, it means almost everyone is married. Is this law a hot or miss?

An official of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kwara State Command, Mr. Yemi Afolayan, has been arrested for allegedly inflicting injuries on a 12-year-old girl, Favour Emmanuel.
Afolayan was also said to have allegedly tied and beaten up Emmanuel before inflicting the injuries on her neck and foot.
Our correspondent learnt on Tuesday that Favour was under the guardianship of Afolayan and his wife, who is popularly known as Iya Beji.
Emmanuel, whose mother resides in Lagos, told PUNCH Metro in Ilorin that Afolayan had asked her to prepare a meal for the family.
She said while she was preparing the meal, Afolayan felt that it had taken a long time for it to be ready and became angry.
Emmanuel said, “He asked me to prepare rice. While I was preparing it, he became angry that it had taken a long time for me to finish cooking the rice. He grabbed me, tied me up and used the hot iron to inflict injuries on my body. It was really a very tormenting experience.”
It was also learnt that Afolayan’s arrest was sequel to a report to the state Ministry of Women Affairs by some concerned neighbours.
The Director of Child Development, Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Lucy Adeniyi, said Favour sustained serious injuries on her neck and foot.
She added that the victim had been treated at the state Civil Service Hospital, Ilorin.
Our correspondent also learnt that Emmanuel was currently at the Children Reception Centre, Gaa Akanbi, Ilorin owned by the state government.
However, Afolayan, who is said to be a father of five, denied that he beat up and burned Emmanuel with hot iron.
He explained that he only scolded her, adding that she ran out of the house. He stated that she might have sustained the injuries while running away from him.
He said, “The girl was only being naughty. I am a father myself and I would not do that to any child. I wanted to scold her. Maybe when she was running out, she sustained the injuries but I didn’t burn her with a iron.”
But the state police command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olufemi Fabode, said the police would ensure that the suspect was brought to justice.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Comfort Afolayan, urged parents and guardians to treat their children and wards with love.
She said, “The child is in our custody. We are taking care of her and we will take her back to her family. The act is very horrible. Such a treatment is not acceptable. This ministry will not relent on protecting the rights of children.”

The composer of Nigeria’s National Anthem, Pa Benedict Elise Odiase has reportedly died in his sleep at his Oregun home in Lagos, early Wednesday morning.
As the director of music of the Nigerian Police band, he composed the national anthem, Arise O Compatriots” in May 1978. He retired in 1992 as a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The new anthem “Arise, O Compatriots” replaced the older one “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
The lyrics are a combination of words and phrases taken from five of the best entries in a national contest.

According to TMZ, Paris Jackson was rushed to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday amid reports of an attempted suicide.
Her mother Debbie Rowe is understood to have confirmed the reports to Entertainment Tonight and said the 15-year-old is currently at a Los Angeles hospital.
A lawyer for Katherine Jackson, Paris’ grandmother, also appeared to confirm the suicide bid.
'She's suffered with the loss of her father,' the lawyer told the New York Daily News. 'But we don't know what she was exposed to that precipitated this.'
Paris, the daughter of the late Michael Jackson, was taken from her Calabasas family home on a stretcher at around 2am and conveyed to a nearby hospital.
The drama unfolded just hours after the teenager posted a series of alarming messages on Twitter.
I pray this girl doesn't go through what Michael went through in his lifetime!

Tintswalo Ngobeni, 22, has shunned the advances of King Mswati III and fled to Britain to avoid becoming the 14th virgin queen of the randy King of Swaziland. Consequently, she is seeking asylum in Britain.

Notoriously outspoken TV host, Wendy Williams, has once again not exercised self restraint when she weighed in her opinion about how long Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend Kanye West's relationship would last on a recent episode of Bravo TV's Watch What Happens Live! She predicts the couple will split immediately after their first child is born, which is said to be in just a few weeks time.
In her very words: 'She and Kanye will not make it and what kind of mom will she be? A single mom,' she said. '(They will split) 30 seconds after the baby is born. I believe right now there is probably a plan in motion and Kris (Jenner, Kim's mother) is probably helping Kim and Kim is probably asking for the help.'
Wendy said that she thinks that Kanye has already had enough of the Kardashian clan's antics.
