I quite agree with your comments. Given the prevalence of bad roads and suddenly driving into potholes i will prefer the RWD.

I am not a fan of front wheel drives considering the fact that the average user tends to have to change the drive shaft especially in older jap models.

Recently while driving on the road i have seen an increase in some front wheel vehicles where the right wheel pulled out.(wonder what is causing that??)

The FWD maybe able to pull out of a ditch better that a RWD

provide more specs or model so i can check out the detailed specs online

A friend who passed there a while just confirmed there was an incidence under the bridge. A life may have been lost. The traffice jam is as a result of people who packed their vehicles and trying to get first hand info or take pics with their phones.

The bomb blast part too is spreading like wild fire. The crowd reaction raises concern because if there were to be a second incidenry device to be trigerred it will surely have killed more people.

I think you should write your warning in capital while increasing the font of the "No" maybe then they can read it. Also move the "No" accross the colon.

The issues just have to do with trend. Most Nigerians just tow in line. Most mechs are slow catching up with developments in the industry. some lack the tools often pricey etc.

Historically at the tail end of the Peugeot 504/505 era came jap models toyota, mazda and nissan. coupled the increase of pump price of fuel from N21/L to N45/Litre the volvo became unattractive considering how the popular model then 240 used to consume fuel equally the noise from the engine bay.

i noticed with new models coming with 5cylinders didnt help the mechanics. For them its V4, V6, V8. so seeing a five was odd.

Knew one mech guy then that said maybe the sixth plug was located somewhere else.

Its a very safe car but lacks a lot of interior aesthetics. In all the new models show some improvement. A nice car overall

I agree tyres are expensive. I dont know if the local plants still manufacture tyres?

I will suggest you stick to popular brands with good quality contol and proven track record of producing good quality tyres.

You might be looking at the following:

1. Michelin
2. Dunlop

The above are quite good for cars. if you looking at SUVs you might consider:
1. Pirelli
2. Continental

Be cautious in the open market when buying all alternates.
Purchase from trusted dealers so if you ever have issues you can always go back to them.

If you can afford it avoid fairly used. (it used to be okay when upon visual inspection and coin check you find some with some miles to go) These days anything goes and they are the frequent cause of tyre bursts.

I will recommend the MB190 (V-boot arrse). it was my first car back in 98. Mine was 2.0L caburettor, manual gear, no air condition. Didnt need to increase the radiator. Drove it for 3years before upgrading to an E-class mercedes.

The man i sold it to is still driving it to date. The car is great just do regular maintenance.

I am presently searching for same spec as a security car. Apart from a nissan maxima then dont remember any 2.0-2.6L engine car dusting me and incredible balance at 185Km/hr not that i recommend that speed again but once in a while on good road you need to know how fast you can go.

Only one draw back on clothe type seats. The upper left side of the driver seat seem to wear out fast so get a seat cover.

Avoid fairly used spares. i upgraded my tyres to 185 from the 165 it came with.

@Alexray you can try Nihal hotel in Diera. Big rooms but had to tip U$5.00 to have my room cleaned and everything working to my taste. shhhhhhhhh.
It is close to the market. Club on first floor but you have to bear the noise. Keep U$1.00 bills in your wallet.(I always say in my country one dollar is big money and we appreciate it a lot) Laugh wan kill me. Good to tip though even locally here it goes a long way.

For family visit we stay out of town. Dont mind the drive after all it is a vacation.

For flexibility i think N15,000 though you will pay less. Note you have to pay VAT and Tax. Also some hotels have highly flexible rates across the week and weekend. Monday to Thursday morning can be all inclusive U$63.00 and Thursday to Sunday can be U$78-85. So watch out. Clarify room rates. The amount would have hit your credit card before you know.

Also eating nigerian food out there depending on where is like paying for continental here in Nigeria. Irrespective of my purse i always convert back to Naira to ensure the price i am paying is right and makes sense. Eateries are good for me anytime - Soft drink, Pies, Chicken, Rice meals; things you already have a fair knowledge of pricing.

Dump the tour guide idea. Just get a street map, note your hotel, nearest bus or metro station or simply walk. Also on arrival convert at least
U$100-200 to local dispossable change.

Do more of sight seeing on your first day and make notes of price/quality. Since you are not a trader. Buy on your next round when you already have a fair knowledge of pricing.

You will find goods within your budget shoes et al. Do not forget to ZIP-UP

if the guy is leaving soon he may still catch snippets of the Annual Discount Rush for January/February. City center tends to favor persons shopping for business. Short trip to malls etc.

In Diera buy and haggle like you are in Balogun market in Lagos.

If you want the Palms/Shoprite/Grand type shopping then stick to Airport Duty free shops and major malls.

Most products are better than chinko equivalent. Other product quality where not equivalent is a step or two below EC quality.

Also indians are same all over the world so watch out when patronising them.

You are doing a good job keep it up. For dubai a lot can be done on DIY basis. You only need to be thorough.

1. Decide what you want to do. (Most budget holiday makers tend to want to add so much hence compromising your schedule).

2. What is your overall budget? (Mind you are to use 85% of this. keep some cash for some eventuallities. When you need a cab over bus or a purchase over your initial budget. Most importantly-FINES in case just be polite while explaining you may even be let off - Dont form).

3. Check online for hotels within your budget preferably 3star types. Some even come with Bed and Breakfast. Look out also for hotels with reviews. Do not ignore negative reviews.
Some come with terrible toilet facilties.
If you are over 6'2" like me it pays to know the bed size.

4. From this end you must have your Dollar credit card funded. Extra money in your dormicillary account is a plus.

5. No harm sending the hotel of your intended stay an email with your intenary to cost and revert back to you. Ask for the front desk number for Communication in English. No harm following your email with a call wont last 3mins costing you less than N180.

6. Keep your enquiry simple and straight to the point. Some email addresses raise eyebrows eg.

i got my cousin the Nissan Almeria hatch back. it came with factory AC but slightly high milleage - 172000km. i drove it for two weeks while carying out some maintenance.

In lagos the parts are cheap. Dont know of ilorin. In traffic fuel consumption with Ac on for me was okay compared to the SUV or Merc S420.
You may need input from toyota users which from most comments have good mpg.

My cousin will be using it for taxi in Abuja. Car came in color green (1998 model).

i am not a fan of front wheel drives so you need to know how far the front drive shaft will last before that terrible noise.

Unlike the PRND type with + and - in some cases the D1-D5 gives you more options in the following scenarios considering that it is an AWD SUV.

In the regular D the vehicle does everything with a dip in rpm or you may not get the required pick up rate despite pressing hard on your gas pedal.

1. D1-D2 is more useful when you are stuck and trying unditch yourself. You are trying to recreate H2 which only available on 4WD.

2. D1-D2 is also useful when you are going down a steep hill and will put less stress on your transmission while stepping on your brakes.

3. D3 is more useful if while trying to overtake a lorry you had to suddenly drop speed and need to pick up again. the drop in rpm that is experienced and your needing to accelerate again to complete your overtaking some Ds will experience a slow pick up rate (This has caused some head-on collisions by overtaking vehicles whose driver thought they could make it).
Droping to D3 the vehicle surges forward with the increase in RPM
