$9.3m Belongs To Nigeria – Senate

As controversy continues to trail the seizure of $9.3million from two
yet to be disclosed Nigerians and one Israeli in South Africa last
Monday, the Senate yesterday declared that the seized money
belongs to the Nigerian government.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the South African police are investigating
two Nigerians and an Israeli citizen, who tried to take $9.3m (about
N1.5bn) in cash into South Africa illegally and a cross-section of
Nigerians have been calling for further probing into the matter.
Rising from a two-hour closed door meeting on the matter and other
related security issues with the chief of defence staff, Air Marshall
Alex Badeh and other service chiefs, the chairman, Senate Committee
on Defence, George Sekibo (PDP/Rivers East) made this disclosure to
Senate correspondents.
According to him, investigation into the controversial deal by his
committee continues.
“We are still investigating the alleged $9.3million deal. We have
started the investigation. When we get through with the investigation,
we will brief you, but facts available to us now from the security
chiefs show that the money belongs to the Nigerian government,” he
said.
…Says death row soldiers can appeal
On the death sentence passed on 12 Nigerian soldiers for mutiny,
Sekibo stated that the Senate was not under pressure to intervene in
the matter.
He said, “No, we are not under pressure, because the Armed Forces is
established by an Act of the National Assembly. The Act spelt out
categorically the conduct of the soldiers and the way they are to
behave wherever they are. If you join the military, that Act is to guide
you and your conduct. If you go contrary to any of the prescribed
sections of the Act, the punishment prescribed for the Act you
violated will come on you.
“So the military did not just wake up one day and say that they are
going to kill Mr A or Mr B. They went through the necessary
processes and they found them guilty. But I think that those found
guilty also have a way out. They can go on appeal and if the appeal
finds them not guilty, that will be it. But for what the military has
done, they have done the best thing; because you must instil
discipline in the Armed Forces. If you don’t do so, one day, all of us
here will be sacked and you will not hear of this place. I think we
should encourage the military,” he added.
