Assuming you aren't under any pressure to pay bills at home and u don't have any responsibilities take the first one. Use it to build yourself up especially if u don't any previous experience

NigelCundy:
Hi guys, I present to you two cases that need your opinion.

Case 1
Introduction:

After missing out on the APL, I got a call today for an offer from a company I interviewed with in December.
The company is in Lekki, but I live in Ikorodu. The job comes with a lot of international exposure, although the exposure only takes place on the computer screen. It's a big firm but with only a few people (less than 25). The MD is a popular figure in Nigeria.

The Dilemma:

The pay is about 80k, and I'll spend an average of 40k on water transportation every month, and about 7k on feeding.
I have until Friday to accept or decline the offer.

Ps: I don't know anyone in Lekki

Case 2
Introduction

I interviewed with another company last Friday, just before the news of APL broke, the company is located in Ikeja (closer to Ikorodu) and I got the interview through a referral.

The Dilemma:

The take home will be around 110k/month with no international exposure but a defined career path, rapid career growth, and a more robust work environment (I'll be responsible for over 50 workers).
Ps: The offer isn't on ground yet.

Please I seriously need advice on what to do.

Good one..we need more encouraging and helpful posts for people.

I wrote this on this thread few years ago and i think it may still be of help to one o two people.
https://www.nairaland.com/1576070/useless-cringe-worthy-degrees/6

uzoexcel:
To Mr Caveman and others
u mentioning the below aforementioned courses as useless and irrelevant shows your dim-witted reasoning sorry to say. If u really studied in UI and u dont know the importance that the city of Ibadan places on Agricultural related courses, then methinks u dont have any idea of what u r saying here.
I did my college education in Ibadan and even i knew the 'rep' people who read these courses get. Ibadan has more than 6 agricultural world class research institutions amongst which are
IITA - International institute of Tropical agriculture
CRIN_ Cocoa research institute of Nigeria
NISER- National institute of social economic research
FRIN - Forest research institute of Nigeria
IAR & T
amongst others

The most important thing is wherever/whatever u study, create a roadmap for urself and most IMPORTANTLY, think far....Dont let naija be the limit of ur thinking/horizon. There r scholarships/opportunities for every course in europe if u package urself properly
.Google erasmus mundus masters courses and u ll see scholarships/opportunities for all courses
Its so unfortunate that in naija that due to the underdevelopment of so many industries and the man-know-man mentality people who sweat reading courses like human kinetics, polymer and textile engineering etc will end up in a bank or having to start business because the industries where they wouldav put whatever they garnered in school is virtually non existent.

Make i yearn more as i gat free time on my hands for now grin. Take for example someone who reads Food science, microbiology, animal science, soil science etc and finishes with a 2:1 and then goes on for his NYSC in kano. If u wanna package urself internationally for masters scholarship application, it starts from NYSC. Dont go joining groups for CDS like road safety etc which are 'useless' (u are allowed to use this word here only smiley ) ; instead look out for UNICEF, HIV/AIDS, anti Women trafficking, MDG'S (renowned world bodies) and make sure u take it serious and follow it bumper to bumper and at the end of ur NYSC, have an official of one of these NGO's write a strong letter of recommendation for you saying u undertook voluntary work (u can sweeten it by saying u chose to give back to the society bla bla bla) and then with your 1 year experience/service in a college (instead of saying you taught biology, you can put 'a college lab scientist') -- This is packaging..... ... (Packaging is important,,its why most of us will pay to watch Thor in cinemas while we have our own Sango and amadioha rotting away with low patronage grin )
along with ur TOEFL which you should write while doing your NYSC as this is the best time to write it when u v time and FG money in ur hands, u r good to go to apply for the following below..they r all called erasmus mundus masters courses..there r so many more but this s what i could dig up
http://sites.wageningenur.nl/en/emsanf.htm
http://emfoodoflife.eu/
https://www.jyu.fi/en/studywithus/programmes/emsep
http://www.master-imacs.org/
http://sutrofor.eu/

With expensive phnes most of y'all carry around, try and utilize it optimally by googling and doing research..a friend of mine who finished from UNIUYO was complaining about lack of opportunities in her course to study abroad..I told her that 'do u know that UNIUYO is the only university in naija that has an agreement with NTNU (Norwegian university of sciience and technology) which is the topmost university in Norway for free masters and scholarship admission in the whole of naija.Check the following link below . there is a quota specifically allocated just for students who graduated from UNIUYO
http://www.ntnu.edu/studies/ntnu-s-cooperation-agreements

I also think there is laziness of some nigerian gradautes, i wonder why someone who read a course like international relations, linguistics, english language, mass communication etc would not take out time to study or pay for language courses in french, german etc. If i read any of the above courses apart from scholarships and all, i would be thinking of working for the United Nations, UNDP and all. (b4 u can work for any of these international NGO'S u must know a second language apart from english language)
LEARN TO THINK BIG, IT DOESNT MATTER WHEREVER YOU ARE.MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT U HAVE and no one will see ur back
Sorry for the long letter;i sometimes 4get myself though i m taking an example from my ogas at the top in the art of letter writing grin grin grin

Good one

OgidiOlu3:
Now, IT is a very large field. Good old programming is still the heart of it. I recently introduced two female friends to programming.
One now does data analytics with Python, and the other just started web development. None of them studied Computer Science in school.

So, let's start:

1. Programming: This is quite easy, honestly. Most people find it difficult because they read or watch difficult tutorials. Learn a language and start building little projects. You don't need to learn all the programming languages in the world. Only learn the one you need for any particular job.

a.) Node.js: You can start with this. It is open-source (meaning it is not proprietary and it is free) and it is in demand. There are materials everywhere to learn this. My best however is a tutorial from Angela Yu. She's funny and her tutorial will teach you from an absolute beginner to a web developer.
You will learn frontend technologies like HTML, CSS, BootStrap, JavaScript to backend tech like Node.js, REST API, SQL and NoSQL. Don't fear, they are all simple especially when you watch her videos.

Her course link on Udemy: https://www.udemy.com/course/the-complete-web-development-bootcamp/
Her course link for free download: https://tutsgalaxy.net/the-complete-2020-web-development-bootcamp/

The file is large though.

b.) C#: This is also a very good language and it is in demand. It is Microsoft's technology and it is robust and very useful for enterprise applications.
When it comes to C# and the .NET Framework, your best bet is Kudvenkat on YouTube. He has a lot of very good and easy to understand tutorials.

His channel link: https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat

c.) Python: This is a very easy and very versatile language. It can be used for web development, data analytics, and even AI and Machine Learning. Its downside is just the speed when compared to C# for example. It's also very much in demand.

Edureka and FreeCodeCamp have some of the best free tutorials on almost all IT fields.
Edureka: https://www.youtube.com/user/edurekaIN
FreeCodeCamp: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8butISFwT-Wl7EV0hUK0BQ

https://www.freecodecamp.org/ is also a very interactive website that teaches you software/web development from start to finish.

There are a lot of other interesting languages to learn. Just do your research and see the one you would like.

My pick for this part is Angela Yu's course. It is actually very interesting smiley

2. Cloud Computing: In the past, when we build apps, we deploy them to physical servers or use some hosting platforms like GoDaddy and co.
Now, we have cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform. For a beginner, you might just check for some tutorials on Youtube to help you start. You can even get a free 30-day subscription on Azure to test and learn with.
After that, you can apply for jobs as a Cloud engineer or a support engineer. One of the few companies that employ a lot of support engineers in Nigeria is Tek Experts: https://www.tek-experts.com/en-us/tek-experts-nigeria-jobs-in-lagos

The good thing about Tek-Experts is that they take you irrespective of your background and experience as long as you can pass their test and interviews. You will LEARN A LOT, especially about Microsoft technologies. They will expose you to the world of IT. The downside, however, is the pay. The pay is meagre but as a beginner, you can't really complain. Just gain experience and move on.

When you learn any programming skill, you can then start applying for internships. Promotion in the IT world is largely dependent on how good you are. It can be very fast honestly. You can also apply for some Junior Developer roles.

Some remote companies also employ junior devs.
Use these links below to find remote jobs. Some of them only employ from the US while others employ from anywhere so take note of the location on the vacancies. These links are not only for IT jobs, so please check if there is any one you can do there.

https://weworkremotely.com/
https://remoteglobal.com/
https://remotive.io/

Hand don dey pain me and I dey work. I might come back to update later.

Good one.
exactly what I v been saying ...

I 'll also add a link to a post I made on a reply years ago about opportunities and all...

For the IT Skill u can add Digital Marketing to your list

OgidiOlu3:
Don't let your emotions cloud your judgement. This thread isn't a pity party. The purpose of the thread is to get info about NNPC and what working there is like. I feel for those that didn't get in. Heck, I have friends that didn't get in but it is not the end of the world. We all have our stories.
I wrote here some time ago that I almost got a remote job that was gonna pay me $30k to $40k per year. That's over 1m every month, way above what NNPC would dream of paying GTs. Plus, I would actually learn a lot and grow too. I was very sad. In fact, it was one of the saddest days ever. All my plans vanished just like that but that experience taught me a lot.

My advice is this:

1. Get IT skill. It's one of the cheapest and easiest skills to learn. You can learn ANY IT skill that will get you a decent job online for free.

2. After getting this skill, apply to jobs abroad too. Honestly, I barely apply for Naija jobs. There are tons of jobs abroad. Now, I have two job offers, one in Naija and the other abroad. I am still deciding which to choose based on a number of things. My friend just got one in Norway.

3. Rejections are part of the process. Accept it. Don't let it weigh you down.

4. Apply for a lot of jobs. Don't always bank on any job. If it comes, fine. If it doesn't, we move.

5. Always try and leave an impression at an interview. Let the interviewers feel you actually have some value to add. When you want to interview with a company, research on its shortcomings, research on its failures and see what you can do to help. Nobody will reject a valuable candidate. When I did the NNPC interview, I knew I had done well. The interviewer practically said, "we need people like you". I knew I had passed but I could never be so sure I would get the job because I thought they would play politics or something.

PS: The IT skill I advised is because IT is the field that can easily get you jobs abroad. And there are jobs in abundance so if you're good, you will get one. IT is growing every day so it can't be saturated.

Godspeed!

Madame Jane, u r a well known personae on this forum but one still doesn't know what it is u want. Dont take this the wrong way. or better still lemme clarify further.

I think for those writing personal experiences, it 'll also be good if u open/summarize a little background about yourself as an added paragraph...(e.g i reside in lokoja, i have a first class in Yoruba Lang, I have ABC skill and currently preparing for my ICAN)... u never know, some people here may v internal vacancies in their offices in which they can dm you privately or recommend u. others may help repackage ur resume/cover letters, give u pointers in what you doing wrong etc. etc. You have a first class, that's half a door opened.
To add though, in this naija we live in,I 'll advice u learn some skills...their r free courses/classes from Google garage on digital marketing (which is kinda the inthing) and even other academies ... follow reputable people in your field on Twitter(and not just celebrities) and quora..observe them, privately even dm..go for meetups especially if u in Lagos/ Abuja. let social media work for u.

and no, i didn't get APL. I m under the EH category.
I repackaged myself to a role classification as my current field isn't in the needed fields for NNPC, wrote the test, passed and did the interview for experienced Hire for a role I v never done in my life but taking a liking too. I m not sure how it went. Between the interview till now i have studied, read and passed a certification (135k cost) in this field. I will probably be switching to this field by March. This will probably drop me down levels from my current job but if u have a vision u just gotta look forward and never backwards especially for The potential this field has66.The other bright side is if i get APL I will find myself more "experienced" than I initially was during the interview.

I utilized the NnpC experience to give myself a kick up my own ass. Don't view every experience in life as a negative..Always push forward however infinitesimally.

fabulousLady:
I was disappointed on Friday but when I heard about the technical glitch disperse error I decided to hold unto that ray of hope. But I guess it's time I move on.

I've had so many disappointments, so many, this one left me devastated, I never thought I could survive it but it seems I'm feeling better now.

I'll be 27 in July, doing my masters after several rejections from abroad scholarships.

After completing my NYSC in 2018, I couldn't even get a teaching job with my first class. This nnpc disappointment is so painful because I thought this was it, I was prepared for every question asked, I wasn't tensed at all, I know I did well but God knows why I was not successful.
