Embattled President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe makes first public appearance since his house arrest Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has appeared in public for the first time since the army's takeover earlier this week. Mugabe, who was believed to be under house arrest, attended a university graduation ceremony in Harare on Friday, where he was welcomed by a cheering crowd of supporters. Dressed in a blue academic gown and hat, he entered the ceremony venue surrounded by security personnel, and held a speech. This came after soldiers took control of the headquarters of the state broadcaster ZBC and blocked access to government offices on Wednesday, while denying it was part of a coup against Mugabe's government. The president has refused to step down, amid mounting pressure from the army to allow a smooth and bloodless transition. The military seeks to reinstate former Vice President Emerson Mnangagwa as first vice president and then as leader of a transitional administration. According to an army statement broadcast on Zimbabwe state television on Friday, "significant progress" was made in mediation talks aimed at ending Mugabe's military house arrest.

The woman dubbed ‘the heaviest in the world’, has died in a hospital in the United Arab Emirates aged 37. Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, from Alexandria, Egypt, once weighed 1,100lbs, and before her surgery earlier this year had not left her bed since her pre-teens. Doctors at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi said Miss Ahmed Abd El Aty had died due to complications from her weight, including heart disease and kidney dysfunction. The hospital said: ‘Our prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to her family.’ Doctors blamed her weight on a thyroid condition, while her family claimed she suffered from elephantitis, a parasitic infection which causes extreme swelling in a person’s limbs and arms. Her family has said that she has been heavy all her life, even as a baby. By the time she was 11 she was too heavy to walk, and had to crawl to get around. Not long after, she suffered a cerebral stroke, which left her bedridden, causing her to pile on the pounds. After a desperate plea for help, a doctor in Mumbai offered to take on her case free of charge. In March Miss Ahmed Abd El Aty was flown Mumbai on a modified plane designed to deal with her sizeable 1,100lb frame. After first losing more than 220 pounds in order to fit onto the operating table, she successfully underwent a gastric sleeve surgery and was reported in April to have lost 660 lbs – more than half of her body weight.

A 35-year-old Indian widow claims needles, nails, and syringes come out of her legs, and that she has no idea how they got there, Oddity Central reports. Anusuiya, from a small village in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, says that the bizarre phenomenon has been occurring since 2012 and that she has been in unbearable pain ever since. Anusuiya Devi claims that she develops small cysts on her legs which eventually burst and discharge a fluid which pushes out a needle or nail. She has encountered difficulties walking, standing, and sitting, but doctors refuse to help her as they believe that she is inserting the needles herself, an accusation that she denies. The widow insists that she has never self-harmed, a claim that is backed up by her brother Awadhesh Kumar, who has lived with her for the last seven years. He does not believe his sister harms herself or does anything to her legs. “It has been five years now and she’s in so much pain every day. I am really stressed for her,” Awadhesh told reporters, “There are three kinds of needles that come out of her body: nails, needles and syringe needles used in hospitals. We have no explanation. I’m with her most of the time, and I’ve never seen her do anything to herself which would explain this. We just want someone to help us.” Anusuiya went to several local doctors in her district but none could help. Her brother claims that they sent her away because they could not understand her condition, and did not believe her. She was finally admitted to a district government hospital in Fatehpur, on October 25, where doctors were shocked by X-ray images that revealed over 70 pins in her legs. “She came to us in a lot of pain. We did several X-rays including full body X-ray and we found 70 different kinds of iron needles in her legs below the knees,” surgeon Dr. Naresh Vishal said. “We did a full body scan to see if there were nails in other parts of her body but there was nothing elsewhere. We only found needles in her legs, nowhere else.” “Medically, it is not possible for such needles to just develop in a human’s body,” Vishal added. “So far we cannot confirm how the needles enter her body, but we suspect the patient has been self-harming. We need to determine whether the patient has any kind of a mental illness and she forcefully inserts them. I have never seen a case like this in my medical career. We spotted so many needles in her legs, we cannot understand how she’s coped with the pain for so long. She will have suffered greatly.” Dr. Vishal said that Anusuiya will be referred to Kanpur hospital so that more qualified doctors can research her condition and help her deal with this problem.

Popularmusician, David Adekeke, alias Davido, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command over the death of his friend, Tagbo Umeke. Davido was arrested by the Lion Building Police Division and brought to the Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal, who, after interviewing him, ordered that he be taken back to the division for further questioning. Tagbo was found dead in a Toyota Camry car parked in front of the Lagos Island General Hospital, which is believed to have been dumped by Davido’s staff, Tunde and Agbaje. The incident went viral on the social media two weeks ago when Tagbo’s girlfriend, Caroline Danjuma, an actress, took to her Instagram page accusing Davido of having a hand in his death. Since then, Davido has come under heavy criticisms over his repeated denial of involvement in the unfortunate incident. Edgal, while addressing journalist yesterday at Ikeja, said the command decided to invite all parties involved in the matter and requested for the CCTV footage in the hospital, which indicated that Davido has a case to answer. According to the police boss, those invited for the meeting included Davido and his family, Tagbo’s family, the Area A Commander, and the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Lion Building Police Station. He said: “At the meeting, Davido repeatedly denied his involvement in the circumstances that led to the death of Tagbo Umeke. The CCTV camera at Shisha bar on Lagos Island showed the deceased in company with some friends. The CCTV camera also showed Tagbo standing and drinking from the bottle. He was also seen molesting some of his friends. The camera also showed a white Toyota Hilux belonging to Davido being driven away by Davido’s escort driver, Tunde Yusuf and Agbaje Olaojo. “Police investigation revealed that the deceased was driven in a Toyota Camry with registration number, LSD 378 EL. The Chief Security Officer of the Lagos Island Hospital identified the Hilux as one of the vehicles that accompanied the vehicle the deceased was found in. Based on the recent development, the DPO was asked to invite Davido for another round of questioning. As we speak, he is being questioned by the DPO. I will keep you posted.” Edgal further stated that the autopsy report conducted on the deceased revealed that he died of suffocation. He said the police were investigating a case of sudden and unnatural death at the Ocean Parade, Banana, Ikoyi, Lagos. The CP said on October 7, 2017, at about 10pm, a case was reported by the Chief Security Officer of the area to the DPO, Ikoyi that two persons, Ugbemiga Abiodun and Chime Amechina, were found dead inside a white BMW salon car, with registration number KJA 631 AY, at under ground garage at the estate. “Police operatives raced to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where bodies of the victims were taken for joint medical examination. We are still waiting for the autopsy report,” the police commissioner said. Further search of the vehicle, he said, revealed that wrapped substances suspected to be hard drugs were recovered. Liquid substance was also observed gushing out from the deceased’s mouths and noses, he revealed. |
