The 66-year-old actor, who now walks with the aid of crutches, said he would be grateful if Nigerians could help him. Emmanuel Adeyemi, Lokoja A veteran broadcaster, journalist and television actor, Mr. Duro Solomon, is critically ill. He needs N4 million for a surgery after he narrowly survived a ghastly road accident. The broadcaster, victim of a hit-and-run driver, has been in and out of hospital since 2015 when the accident occurred in Abuja. Already, he has sold off virtually everything he owned, including his car, to offset his hospital bills. He narrated his story: “On November 15, 2015, by 8.30 p.m., I was standing along Gwarimpa Housing Estate to get a bike home when a fast-moving car suddenly knocked me down and dragged me into a gutter, abandoned me and sped off. “I was in that gutter for over 12 hours when a Good Samaritan spotted me and rushed me to Kubwa General Hospital. After I was examined, it was discovered that I had a broken hip, fractured arm and leg, twisted ankle and bruises all over me. The hospital had no facility for hip X-ray, so I was taken to Gwarimpa General Hospital, where I spent 102 days. “My problem now is, I go in and out of hospital due to the severe pains I usually experience in my hip and knee joints. Right now, I can’t walk straight and the doctor said I need an urgent surgical operation, which will involve the replacement of my hip bones. The doctor put the total cost of my treatment, including the surgical operation, laboratory tests, drugs, hospital admission and others at N4 million, if I am to be treated locally and N7 million if I am to be treated abroad. I don’t even have N2,000. In fact, I have to rely on relations and friends to feed myself.”Solomon’s medical report, dated January 10, 2018, produced by Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, and signed by Dr. Sidiq Salawu, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, noted that “radiographs showed evidence of an old LT acetabular injury with advanced secondary osteoarthritis, which needs total hip replacement.” Solomon, a product of the University of Ibadan, had a stint at the Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna. He played the role of Imodoye in Wale Ogunyemi’s Oke Langbodo, adapted from D.O. Fagunwa’s Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmale. It was staged during the FESTAC ’77. He was also with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Kaduna, as well as the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Kaduna. He later became the head of programmes at the FRCN, Ilorin, before it was proscribed in 1985. Solomon was location manager for the television series Mirror in the Sun and appeared in several of its episodes. He also acted for several years as Dr. Jones in Paradise Park, an NTA Network drama series, among others. The 66-year-old actor, who now walks with the aid of crutches, said he would be grateful if Nigerians could help him. His account name and number at the United Bank for Africa is Duro Solomon, 1017160156. http://sunnewsonline.com/veteran-actor-needs-n4m-surgery-road-accident/

By Evelyn Usman. Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS, Lagos State Police Command, have arrested a suspected member of a robbery gang who withdrew N350,000 through a phone stolen from a food vendor in Mushin area of Lagos. The gang, specialised in dispossessing victims of phones for the purpose of getting their account details and making withdrawals without the account holder’s knowledge. To get victims’ phones, the syndicate liaises with pick pockets who steal phones and bring the SIM cards to them, for a fee. One of the pick pockets, Tajudeen Alamu, who posed as a customer, allegedly stole a Techno K7 phone, worth N40, 000, from a food vendor at Ladipo Street, Monday. After retrieving another SIM, owner of the phone, Essien Gloria, was stunned when she received a debit alert of N350,000, consequent upon which the matter was reported at the state’s Police headquarters. Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, immediately directed operatives of the FSARS led by the Commander, Mr. Peter Gana, to go on the trail of the suspect. The stolen phone was traced to one Pelumi Adekunle in Mushin, who during interrogation, revealed that her husband, Alamu, gave her the phone. In this interview, Alamu, a cobbler, admitted to have stolen the phone but said he never got a dime from the money withdrawn from the account. He said: “Yes, I took the phone from where it was placed on a table in the buka (Roadside food eatery). I removed the SIM card, took it to where some ‘boys’ usually gathered. “I gave it (SIM card) to Ganiyu but I did not collect anything from him. When I went to visit my wife, she said she liked the phone and collected it from me. “Ganiyu, told me he would take the SIM card to Machingo, who will check if there was money in there. He was with two other SIM cards. He left me in his house for Machingo’s place. “He said they usually meet in a hotel at Ogunukun Street, Mushin. But he later informed me that Machingo said there was nothing on the SIM, unknown to me that they purchased recharge cards worth over N190,000 from the bank’s mobile app that was stored in the phone. “They have all fled, leaving me to bear the consequence alone.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/robbery-suspect-arrested-for-allegedly-withdrawing-n350000-by-stolen-phone/

Director General of the National Youth Services Corp, Brigadier General Suleiman Zakari Kazaure. Director-general of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Zakari Kazaure, has reassured corps members of the upward review of their allowance, saying it would take effect with the new national minimum wage. Kazaure said efforts were being made to increase the monthly allowance currently at N19,800 while applauding them for service to their fatherland. Addressing the 2018 Batch B corps members yesterday at Bauchi State Orientation Camp in Wailo, Ganjuwa council, Kazaure urged them to Bauchi to be patient with government. The DG, who was represented by the scheme’s Director of General Duties, Habib Kurawa, commended corps members for the services they had been rendering to the country, especially in the area of education. Their contribution to national development is part of the reasons all efforts are in place to ensure that their allowance is increased, he noted. Informing them that the United Nations (UN) and other international agencies appreciate the role of NYSC members in their various places of primary assignments, he said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would engage them in the 2019 general election. Kazaure warned them to steer clear of electoral malpractices, but to be good ambassadors of the scheme. Urging the corps members not to be partisan while on electoral duty, he advised them to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Bank of Industry (BoI) and others to secure loans for their entrepreneurship development. The state NYSC coordinator, Afolayan James, explained that 2,044 corps members, comprising 1,186 males and 858 females, were registered in the state for the Batch ‘B’. He informed that Bauchi government officials visited the camp to see the damages caused by the recent rainstorm in the state and promised to repair the camp. Afolayan added that the corps members had received part of their allowances, assuring that they would be given the remaining before they leave the camp. https://guardian.ng/news/reviewed-nysc-allowance-will-come-with-new-minimum-wage-dg-assures-2/
