Federal Ministry of Health has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia on scientific research to mitigate crowd-induced illnesses during the hajj exercise. The partnership, which is in collaboration of the Saudi-based Centre for Mass Gathering Medicine (CMGM), a World Health Organisation (WHO)-funded agency, will assuage the effect of harsh atmospheric condition, outbreak of heatstroke and epidemics during the religious gathering. Representative of Federal Ministry of Health and commissioner in charge of health at NAHCON, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, revealed this yesterday in Medina. Besides, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) said a 450-man team, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other technical support members would be on stand-by for emergencies during the exercise. Kana said: “Many diseases can be spread during such conditions. There may also be stampede, fire outbreak and flood, as it had happened at different times. “Now, this partnership will encompass research, training and knowledge management in general. The centre responsible is the Global Centre for Mass Gathering Medicines, which is one of the few WHO collaborating centres in the world. Saudi Arabia was chosen for the centre base because of large population of Muslims from across the world that attend hajj. “Nigeria was chosen by the Saudis for so many reasons: our large pilgrim population and larger black population during hajj. Therefore, a good representation of tropical Africa, highly organised hajj system and the centralised medical services with real time electronic medical records (are needed). “Through the MoU, I see opportunities for Nigerian physicians to embark on post-graduate training in this new field. I also see opportunities for Nigerian pharmaceutical companies that can also partner with the Saudis, as both countries are emerging economies with diplomatic respect for each other.” He emphasised that the Federal Government, through NAHCON, was embarking on research and analysis of the major causes of morbidity and mortality among pilgrims. That, he said, was aside research findings on the use of pills to delay menstruation during hajj. Ahead of Arafah Day, the NAHCON health commissioner advised pilgrims against roaming under the scorching sun, which could lead to dehydration and sunstroke. He admonished sufferers of high blood pressure and diabetes to strictly abide by movement procedure and schedules, to prevent needless stress that could aggravate their health challenges. https://guardian.ng/news/fg-partners-saudi-arabia-who-to-lessen-crowd-induced-diseases-at-hajj/ cc,mynd44 |

Nollywood actor cum comedian, Charles Okocha, aka Igwe Tupac, has revealed the kind of woman he would like to marry. Okocha, speaking with Punch, revealed that he would consider himself very lucky if he could find a woman like his mother. He said, “I am still looking for that right woman; a woman who is going to love me for me, not just for my social status or anything; I don’t want to get into any relationship that won’t last. “She should be there for me like a mother and a sister; she should be able to treat me the way my mum is treating me right now. I appreciate my mum so much; she has been very supportive, if I’m to come to this world again, I’d still want her to be my mum.” The actor also said social media had been the best thing that happened to his career. “Social media is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Although I still appreciate my movie background; social media has been the best. I am making it big through social media. Of course, I am not trying to downgrade other platforms I’ve been on but social media has really increased my fan base,” he said. On what inspires his comedy skits, Okorocha added “My slogans come naturally and they are meant to inspire people. Just like my latest slogan called Identity, it is about motivating people to ensure they are identified with something tangible in life. For example, my identity is that I am an all-round entertainer. “I respect my hype man a lot, his role in my videos was a coincidence; it wasn’t planned. I used to do skits alone, so when my new car arrived; he was the one with the camera adding spice to what I said and that was how it all started.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/08/04/charles-okocha-reveals-kind-woman-love-marry/ cc:mynd44

Officials of the Behind Bars Rights Initiative (BBI) on Wednesday facilitated the arrest of six SARS officers, led by one Inspector Monday Asemota, for allegedly extorting N40,000 from twin brothers identified as Mark and Martins, who were travelling to Warri on Tuesday from Abraka town in Delta State. It was gathered that the officers swooped on the vehicle conveying the two brothers, in a stop-and-search operation, and demanded for the phones of the victims. Our informed sources said that the officers while going through their phones, allegedly found some pictures linking them to homosexuals, including the discovery of N70,000 in their bags, which purportedly made the officers order them to stay behind while other passengers in the vehicle, a commercial vehicle playing Warri, Abraka and neighbouring communities, were asked to go. The victims were alleged to have been taken to a petrol station where the officer allegedly counted N40,000 out of the N70,000 and returned N30,000 to them. It was further gathered that the victims immediately contacted the Behind Bars Rights Initiative (BBI), which swung into action, and the officers were tracked down in Ekpan Police Station, with the N40,000 refunded to the victims. The chairman of BBI, Mandy Osuji, who confirmed the incident to DAILY POST, said: “One of them, Martins Egiebor called us, and we swung into action, followed their complaints up, and ensured that the matter was taken before the IGP X Squad Delta State Police Command, and they immediately sent their man after them, and they were arrested at Ekpan Police Station where they were forced to return N40,000 while they are undergoing trials”. Confirming the arrest of the six SARS operatives, the state Police Commissioner, Mustafa, Muhammed told DAILY POST that, “the six officers are undergoing trials, and until investigations are completed, I cannot speak further on the issue”. http://dailypost.ng/2018/08/03/six-sars-officers-arrested-delta-allegedly-extorting-n40000-twins/ mynd44 lalasticlala

It is no longer news that comedian, Ajebo, is officially off the bachelor’s market as he got married to the love of his life, Uchechi Kalu about a week ago, but he left many speechless at the reception. Getting married comes with its tears of joy sometimes not because one is getting married or leaving his parents but because of the struggles both parties have endured and pulled through together that drives down these tears and Ajebo, was a clear example. The comedian shed so much tears thinking how his woman has stood by him right from the days he had nothing and the believe finally came to a reality and it was nothing but joy all through after the whole dram in church. Little did pretty Uchechi know that her hubby was going to hit her hard at the reception as he displayed what she should expect during their honeymoon. https://www.modernghana.com/nollywood/34476/more-photos-from-comedian-ajebo-and-his-pretty-bride.html

By Patrick Obahiagbon Much has been said about political leadership in states of the federation and in the Nigerian nation-state in the contexts of good and bad leaderships. The essential prisms through which to appreciate leadership could be philosophical or ideological, spiritual or temporal, economic or political, social or cultural. Whichever it is, the important thing is that one of the marks of leadership in all its variegated nuances is mentoring. The leaders galvanise the led or the followers and provide the critical force in the exploration and voyage of administration for the good of the collectives.A leadership that cannot galvanise followership will not only be deprived of the benefit of loyalty which is a quid pro quo element between leadership and followership, but will also miss its place in history and its connection in posterity. That is the reason leaders at different intersections, especially in the political sphere in Nigeria, are wont to show more than scant interest in those who succeed them. A body of arguments exists to support this thesis. One which enjoys cosmopolitan resonance is the idea of continuity of programmes, projects and policies. The situation supra is the fons et origo of the outlandish macabre dance that has maniacally engrossed opposition homo sapiens in the country. This is the testy and tricky moment that the federal government and all APC governors must keep their eyes on the ball and this is exactly where Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki has become an exempli gratia of good governance and thus not only quickly writing his name in gold, but also defining his place in the pantheon of fame. Obaseki is building on the solid infrastructural development foundations laid by his predecessor, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, in a deliberate bid to reinforce the essential validation that the Oshiomhole-Obaseki government in Edo is a continuum. This is the point I made earlier about mentoring. The present administration has not only embraced continuity as a directive principle of state policy, it has also imbibed the audacious spirit of Oshiomhole to embark on ambitious projects, one of which was the construction and reconstruction of over 500 kilometres of roads across the state in the first year of the administration. Importantly, the scope, shape, contents and texture of Obaseki’s development narrative in Edo state are grandiosely overwhelming. The trend presently is that one sleeps and wakes up to see one development initiative or the other taking place in the state. This is now a common feature that has earned the Obaseki administration the sobriquet of “wake and see” development. Indeed, the philosophical underpinning of the present luminous epoch of development in Edo state was the forging of the Edo State Investment Summit Alaghodaro 2017 with the apt theme: “Envisioning the Future.” In fact, a government that is forward-looking and committed to rapid transformation of the state must envision the future and chart pragmatic trajectories to get there. In the administration’s commitment to ensure the crystallization of its goals and objectives of development, the focus on institutional reforms is in apple-pie order. The key to such reforms and development are institutions. It is in this context that the administration must be commended for embarking on processes that have made the civil service reform more efficient and productive to ensure smooth service delivery. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/obaseki-and-his-wake-and-see-development-narrative-in-edo/ cc:mynd44

By Dayo Johnson Akure—TRAVELLERS on the ever-busy Benin-Ore-Lagos Expressway were, yesterday, trapped for over five hours, as youths locked down the road while protesting 10 years of total blackout in the south senatorial area of Ondo State. Vehicular and commercial activities on the expressway were completely paralysed, while the protest lasted. The southern senatorial area of the state consists of six local governments: Odigbo, Irele, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo and Ile-Oluji. Before yesterday’s protest, the youths had issued an ultimatum, but it was ignored by the government. The aggrieved youths, on the platform of United Action Democracy, UAD, trooped out as early as 7a.m. to barricade all routes to the Benin-Ore-Lagos Road and halted all forms of vehicular movements on the expressway. Placards The protesters displayed placards with inscriptions such as “Restore Light Back to Ondo South,” “Revoke BEDC Licence,” “10 Years DarknessWetin We Do?” “ODSG Has Failed Us,” “This Total Blackout Has Crumbled Our Business,” “Ajayi is a Wicked Man.” According to them, the blackout had made jobless youths in the areas to take to crime, accusing the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, of “plunging the communities into total darkness.” Spokesperson of the protesters, Kunle Ajayi, said the youths decided to “shut down the busy expressway after dialogue with the government had failed to restore electricity to the area. According to him, “the power outage has further paralysed major business activities in the southern areas of the state, mostly for those who need electricity to power their trades. “The problem of the non-payment of electricity bill, which had been the excuse of the electricity company, should not be visited on consumers who had been consistent with the payment of their bills. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/08/youths-shut-benin-ore-road-over-10-year-power-outage-in-ondo/
