Car Talk › Tesla Aims For A $25k Car And To Produce 20 Million Vehicles Annually by vanunu(op): 7:51am On Sep 23, 2020 |
At Tesla’s Battery Day event, CEO Elon Musk made some big announcements: the company’s moves toward eliminating cobalt in its batteries, a new Plaid powertrain for the Model S that could get to speeds of 200 mph, and a new cathode plant to streamline its battery production. And, with the new battery technology, Musk has said Tesla will make a $25,000 car.
The socially-distanced outdoor event had Musk and other presenters addressing Tesla shareholders in parked cars, who honked their horns to indicate their approval of the speakers’ remarks— almost like a drive-in movie/shareholders meeting.
Here are the main takeaways from Tesla’s 2020 battery day: Tabless battery cells will improve Teslas’ range
Tesla plans to manufacture its own “tabless” batteries, which will improve its vehicles’ range and power. The new batteries will be produced in-house, which Musk says will reduce costs and bring the sale price of Tesla electric cars closer to gasoline-powered cars. It’s expected to lower Tesla’s cost per kilowatt hour, a key metric used to measure electric vehicles’ battery packs. The tabless cells (Tesla is removing the tab that connects the cell and what it’s powering), which Tesla is calling the 4860 cells, will make its batteries six times more powerful and increase range by 16 percent.
Tesla currently sources its batteries from Panasonic, and is likely to keep doing so for some time, but moving battery production in house has been on Musk’s to-do list for some time; in 2018 a shortage of those cells added to production delays. Musk has said the pace of battery production at Panasonic had slowed production of both the Model 3 and the Model Y. Model S Plaid will cost $139,990 and be available in 2021
Musk has been teasing the Plaid powertrain for a while, which will be a step above its Ludicrous model. It will have a range between charges of 520 miles, get from 0-60 mph in under two seconds, and a top speed of 200 mph. The price is listed on Tesla’s website at $139,990. Musk had noted in the past that a Plaid trim level would “cost more than our current offerings,” which it does. It will be available in the Model S in late 2021. A new cathode plant is coming... eventually
Musk said Tesla will build a new cathode plant for its batteries in North America, part of its quest to reduce supply chain costs and simplify cathode production. It’s also making improvements to its process that will make cathodes 76 percent cheaper, and produce zero wastewater. The company also plans to diversify the cathodes it uses, because of low nickel supplies.
We don’t know where the new cathode plant will be built, but Musk said in July when Tesla announced its next factory would be in Austin, Texas that he would “strongly consider” runner-up city Tulsa, Oklahoma for future projects. No more cobalt in the cathodes
Tesla plans to eliminate the use of cobalt in its cathodes. Musk has said he wanted to eliminate it entirely in the past — even though Tesla’s existing batteries use very little. Cobalt is often mined under conditions that violate human rights, which has led to a push to find other materials to replace it.
Musk didn’t offer a timeline for when the company will stop using cobalt but said it will make its batteries significantly cheaper.
“It’s absolutely critical that we make cars that people can people can actually afford,” he said. “Affordability is key to how we scale.” A $25,000 car is a new goal
Tesla plans to reduce the cost of its battery cells and packs, with an end goal of building a $25,000 electric car. Tesla will hit this goal using its new “tabless” battery cells, and changing the materials inside the cell, which he said should allow Tesla to “halve” the price per kilowatt-hour, Musk said.
This isn’t the first time Musk has predicted that Tesla would dramatically reduce the costs of its electric cars. He first promised a $25,000 EV back in 2018, which he said was possible within three years. |

With Tesla's new battery which will soon be launched on the day he calls 'Battery Day' it will not be out of place to say that the days of fossil fuel powered cars are numbered. My own prediction is that, with Tesla eliminating the use of Colbert in battery production, in ten years time most households in Nigeria will turn to solar as their main source of electricity. In other words, what happened to Nitel will soon happen to Nepa. |

Simplyleo: Keep deceiving yourself.
Fossil fuel remains the only source of energy easily converted to other forms at the lowest cost.
Even electric cars need energy source which in this case is battery. So how do you charge your battery easily?
If it is that easy, why do we still depend on generators or phcn even though inverters are all over the places? Tesla has built a battery that can last for 16 years or 1000 miles, thereby making battery powered cars cheaper than fossil fuel. You can google it. Is not that fossil fuel will become useless, but for a country like Nigeria, in 15 years time, will not be able to pay civil and public servants and buid roads. |

Teejay13: A well spoken and written article!
Even though am from the east, but i believe the speaker has just spoken my mind.
The igbos needs to find their root.
Even with the stigmatizaton we can always retrace our step and get it right.
But before then, we need to unite, network and not just network but also establish trust among ourselves and other ethnic group.
But the big question is how do we achieve all of this?
- Limit our love for money; the love for money is the root of all evil. This money na here he go end!
- Participate more in community development services
- Be our brothers keeper
- Give room to participate in diverse activity that profers community development and not just focus on business alone.
This is just a few line of my own take.
What are you saying? There is no ethnic group that does community development more than the Igbos. |

Such is the shallow reasoning that has not gotten you anywhere.
If you call Hausas, Fulani slaves, Fulanis cows, Northerners as dumb, call Yoruba as Hausa- Fulani slaves without any Igbo of note cautioning such foolishness, tell me how you would expect these people to support your aspiration? Politics is about building coalition, in APC case they were able to build a winning coalition. Throughout they never denigrated any tribe or religion. In the case of Igbo they remained silent while some riff Raff's appropriated the authority to speak for them and continually condemned APC as a Muslim Brotherhood party and a Northern Agenda to give land to Fulani people. You see why it will be hard to move forward if you do not genuinely build support across all creeds? You are a hypocrite, I guess, you have not heard of the word nyamiri before. |

Politics › Re: The Hypocrisy Of Igbo Political Leaders By Fredrick Nwabufo by vanunu: 5:59am On Sep 01, 2020 |
BabaRamota1980: The so-called Igbo struggle is an enterprise. Individuals from the South-East, who find themselves in position of political influence, hawk the ‘’Igbo agitation’’ as merchandise in self-seeking ventures. These politicians pursue personal gains robed in the collective agenda. And this is largely because of the people who have become addlepated by barbiturated sentiments, conspiracy theories, and nerve-raising nothings.
There are 15 lawmakers from the South-East at the Senate and more of this number at the house of representatives, but no single region-centred legislation has reached fruition. In March 2020, these lawmakers in league with their colleagues approved the $22.7bn loan request of President Muhammadu Buhari unfettered.
But a week after some public-spirited Nigerians raised the alarm that the South-East was excluded in the projects the loan was meant for, these lawmakers in caucuses retreated to playing to the gallery and lacquering their action. They resumed the accustomed showmanship and grandstanding in the face of an obvious fait accompli. Nothing happened afterwards.
Also, most of the lawmakers from the south-east are members of the opposition -- the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) -- but clearly, they have failed in providing leadership in opposition. Some contentious bills were passed right under the stoned watch of these lawmakers. Currently, there are two anti-citizen bills – on hate speech and social media. But these lawmakers do not think they are worth advocating over. These are bills targeted at garrisoning the civic space, the media and the populace.
Considering the disaffection of a section of the South-East with the Buhari administration and juxtaposing that with those who have been operational in their dissent against the administration, is it not logical that the opposition secure the fort of varied voices by working to extirpate these gag bills?
Perhaps, the bills when passed will put a hedge around them – to protect them from minatory probes by their constituents whom they have been remiss in representing. The legislation serves them.
There is now an exhumation of the interred National Water Resources Bill which reposes control of the country’s water resources – both over and underground – in the executive, and which requires Nigerians to get a licence before drilling a borehole (in a nation that cannot provide pipe-borne water for citizens). This legislation, with implications of slavish proportions, is already at an advanced stage at the house of representatives – where there are lawmakers from the South-East -- which will be maximally impacted by this bill when passed. This is where Igbo political leaders, particularly those in the national assembly, should be leading the charge. Whatever development we want in the south-east must proceed from the law; so, change must begin from parliament.
Why have I zeroed in on lawmakers from the south-east? Well, because they are the representatives of the people of the region and they form a bulk of the opposition in the legislature. Naturally, they should wear the shoes of the commoner in the region and feel his pain. They should be the voice of the region. They should be in the vanguard of whatever the people are agitating for provided it is within the remit of the constitution. I have no doubt that whatever they set to achieve for the region in parliament, regional and national consciences will be mobilised in support as long as the agenda is not jaundiced.
But these politicians have commoditised the Igbo interest, blaring hot air on issues affecting the region. They know the people are very emotive and unthinking, so they flagellate the usual marginalisation slant and other conspiracy theories to thrust themselves into public consciousness. And they remain there by constantly reinventing the wheel and stroking the people sore with sentimental nothings.
Some unarmed young men were mowed down by guilty bullets in Enugu a few days ago. Though the DSS said two of its operatives were killed in an encounter with some Biafra agitators. This incident, no doubt, deserves a thorough investigation and the culprits punished at the end of a credible hearing. We cannot keep losing citizens to summary executions. I believe this is a matter on which the voice of lawmakers from the South-East should be loudest. They should not only speak up when it is politically convenient to do so.
I have been threatened by these agitators, but I strongly believe it is against natural propriety if my voice is muted out of grudge on this case. Every Nigerian deserves to live; even if there is an offence, the law must take its course. Summary executions are a reprise of the military era; they have no place in a democracy.
Really, the biggest adversary of the Igbo is not the Hausa, the Yoruba or the Fulani, but fiendish leaders of the ethnic group who secrete their interest in the ‘’Igbo agenda’’; who pit the people against their neighbours and other groups, and who flagellate ethnic emotions for insular ends.
