I believe you can only file taxes within that period. After that would attract penalties. You can read here for more info about online, paper or telephone options for filing your taxes. https://www.canada.ca/en/services/taxes/income-tax/personal-income-tax/doing-your-taxes.html

@rainazoe @behati is right. For 2018, you were a “factual resident” and you must file taxes of your world income. Did you have a bank account, credit card, provincial health insurance, etc here in 2018? Any of these could be classified as secondary ties for tax residency purposes.
Taxes are filed by February of each year up until April 30th. If you can show proof of having paid taxes in Nigeria for 2018, then you would be able to avoid double taxation.
With regards to child benefit, you must file taxes to maintain eligibility for it. Since you haven’t been here, I suppose that you haven’t been receiving child benefits anyway. If you are having your first child now, there is an automatic child benefit application form that you fill in the hospital. I would advice that when you are leaving Canada, give CRA a call before you do to tell them you are leaving.
More info about tax residency status can be found here https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/information-been-moved/determining-your-residency-status.html and you can always contact CRA. If you ask me I would say file taxes anyway irrespective of deemed resident, deemed non resident or factual resident.

You actually did judge her and if you read your reply you would find that it was rather insensitive on so many levels. She clearly stated that her spouse is well aware of their issues as a couple and she did not state anywhere that she intended to migrate with him or through him. She also stated that she had a supportive family emotionally and financially.
Homguy:
I wasn't judging her at all. I not even eligible to. I posted what I did based on what she disclosed.
There were also a lot of "if" conditions.

“What kind of woman will display such rage” “Na Margaret thatcher” etc etc. Comments like that and the reasoning behind them are the matter of discussion and not necessarily guitarlife and his relationships. He reserves the right to not be with someone who has a temperament that he believes is not compatible with his.
The holes in using that as a basis of argument for all females is the issue being discussed. She should not exhibit such because she is a woman, let us even neglect the fact that she actually successfully closed a deal and got money back oh. If she was a male friend, would their friendship end or will friend get a pat on the back and a high five?
Is temper reserved for men alone? If it was the man in the relationship who insisted on getting the extra 2 bucks back and haggled with the driver, would it even be an issue? Won’t most people see it as acceptable for him to display his “rage?”

Our family friends’ home was attacked in Nigeria and the robbers shot and wife jumped in front of husband and took a bullet in her head and died.

I also did not want to respond anymore as respectfully, it appears we have deep divergences on this topic but with this your last example, I can only say a big wow! I don't even know where to pick it up from so I will just leave it at the fact that I am wowed at your decision and the reason for it, especially the bolded.

With respect to the armed robber example you gave, I will also give you a real life example. I have an ex-colleague who's house was attacked in Lekki. Her husband scaled the fence and left his wife (with only a sheet around her), a pre-teen daughter and a baby boy with the armed robbers so go figure.

@vascey I did not use any profanities or insults in addresssing guitar life. However, your admiration of his “conduct” or candour May be pretty skewed, don’t you think? He made the choice to make comments on an online forum and he made statements in generalizations that can be passed up as offensive. Nevertheless his opinion is his and his choices are his to make regardless of what anybody says.
However, this is a forum for discussion and conversation and as educated people, having sparring sessions on topics that actually do matter using logical arguments is vital. We do not need to always agree.
@salford you are spot on at the need for meaningful conversation.
You know most people live life without questioning their decisions. Both my spouse and I were lucky enough to have been raised with gender equality as a priority. So, getting married while in Nigeria saw us deciding to take on duties in our home based on capabilities and not gender. He is the better cook and has been the cook in our home from the outset. This includes family gatherings and when we host. My kids would hardly come to me for meals unless they are literally starving to death or he is not home. I do not like cooking and I have no qualms admitting that. I am better at cleaning and organizing and I do this to OCD perfection. I am also super hands on and DIY. I washed cars growing up and would take my folks cars for servicing or repairs so in our home I service the cars or take for repairs and we do them interchangeably. I also fix stuff around the house cos I know how to. We switch up tasks as necessary and this has never been a problem. Whoever is capable and available handles it.
So relocating to Canada even 34 weeks pregnant and with a toddler, we got our house furnished with IKEA and you know how that goes, we bought a power drill and literally set up everything together and it was done in half the time it would have taken just 1 person if we were following gender roles and waiting for the husband to fix alone. My spouse can be a fantastic daddy daycare or take the kids out alone and their personal care or grooming is no issue since he has always done this from birth and I have no qualms getting our cars fixed, tires changed or rotated and all what not. Chores are not an issue. In fact, chores are not the reason technically why a marriage will break up. It is the mindset and reasoning and perspective that informs a certain kind of behaviour that is the real issue.
Everyone has their choice to make in their home in the interest of what is best for them.
But when we make personal choices we should not forget that they indeed have ripple effects with unintended consequences. When some black lady sat on a bus in far away US of A and challenged segregation, it was a personal choice with a ripple effect that led to challenging racial discrimination and eventually we can draw an undulating line towards our ability to even migrate today.

So all institutions should have a head who must be one that has a phallus?
Homguy:
No. It wasn't .

Mention one institution or community,or body or a group or gathering without a head/leader.

Now note: Being the head does not mean shirking, or not lifting a finger to help your followers or whatever you do decide to call em. A good leader cares deeply for people he leads. That where it comes naturally to share house chores with madam especially when she's exhausted, help with bathing the kids, these do not make a man less of a leader in the family.

Ephesians 5:22-33

Peace!

marriage is a contract between 2 consenting adults. It does not have it’s roots in any religion. There were marriages before Christianity or any other organized religion and wayyyy before the bible was even written and we are 7 billion people in the world. Not all are christians. So does that mean that all other marriages between non christians are null and void? Nevertheless as a Christian, is it the belief that a male is made superior to a female? And even if we choose to agree that your God made males superior to females irrespective of the fact that they both have the exact same number of genetic chromosomes, how then does a male relate to another female that is not his wife? Should a non wife female also submit to another woman’s husband? The entire argument is flawed at it’s best. Like I said earlier, it is a mentality borne out of social conditioning and the need for the fulfillment of selfish interests. Most “head” men want a “neck” woman but will never want their own daughter to be a “neck”. Double standards.
This discussion no fit ever her head sha because last last this is a forum made up of mostly Nigerian males. Na so so submission and head and captain of ship plus religion we go dey read. We no go ever fit hear any logical reasoning as to why a 46 chromosome xy is superior to a 46 chromosome xx, because it doesn’t exist . Women need to be grateful sef than we no by mistake just get 45.9999999 chromosomes, e for don be for us be that.

Highlighted in red is universal health coverage with no private sector options in Canada. The private services which you refer to in the UK would be paid for by individuals either out of pocket or like you mentioned by their insurance but would not be covered financially by their NHS insurance.
dustydee:

There are private hospitals in the UK. Usually people prefer them to the NHS to avoid the long waiting times. Insurance companies will usually want you to go through the NHS first before using the service. spire is one of the hospital chains.

@guitarlife your ex dodged a bullet and I would pop a bottle of champagne on her behalf. There is no logical reasoning to your argument and your mindset is simply put a result of social conditioning. I wouldn’t even bother to go into a q&a with you. @maternal @azed1 have already said enough. Good luck on your search for a neck to support your head aka submissive wife, after all it is your life. However maybe you should consider relocating back to naija after getting your Canadian citizenship sha cos this western life with high divorce rates and comparatively shorter gender gaps that is over a century ahead in development than your lower divorce rates third world religious country of origin may not be the best society to nurture Mrs guitar life, your marriage may just end up as a statistic you know. Mrs will not remain blind and deaf or dumb forever she will realize soon enough that she doesn’t have to take BS.
@ceemac I read your first line and just didn’t have eye power to commit towards reading more. Just a little education cooking is for cooks. It is not a gender ascribed role and majority of the best cooks in the world are male, so go figure.
In the end, whether a head is hiding under the cloak of a religious or cultural practice that confers unmerited power upon said head or not, the advocates of a headship and 1 captainship or 1 drivership are all doing so for their own self interest to remain in the seat of power because it simply feels good and comes with perks. Whether you admit it or not, that is the truth.

@salford lol! @ sabbatical. Life just gets in the way. I try to pop in when I can. Happy to see the thread growing though. Yea, the issues forced their hand to open the flood gates and yes, the docs get issued a tier 2 UK visa based on their employer prior to arrival.
@bsbabe what services did your person access privately? Usually when we say no private care we mean that there are no private hospitals or diagnostics and similar services. All of these are owned by the government. Clinics are different. Usually clinics are owned privately but services rendered are paid for by the provincial government through the health insurance system. Only people who are not eligible for health insurance then have the option to pay out of pocket. This is typically the system for a universal health care system as it operates here, the UK and Australia. In countries with private health systems, hospitals and other services can be owned by private organizations as is the case in countries like the states.
@rainazoe yea, process would be similar. Your gp would even refer you to midwives as well for obstetric care based on your preference.

Ok...

But how prevalent is the option to get private care in Canada, especially when considering the stories of people travelling to get care in US.

I also saw this online: "Under federal law, private clinics are not legally allowed to provide services covered by the Canada Health Act. Regardless of this legal issue, many do offer such services." (from here).

universal health coverage = no private care

@salford you are spot on. I would just say that healthcare is an issue for all countries around the world. That being said, even amongst oecd countries, we are not faring poorly. When you have universal health coverage systems, wait times are bound to be longer. Having experienced the UK NHS and the US paid system (or lack thereof lol!) and then AHS, I’ll pick Canada over the others any day.
Europe including the UK was never really accessible to IMGs until recently after their last health secretary royally f****d up the junior docs making work hours longer and pay less and then their docs chose to migrate to places like Australia where they get paid more and have more sane hours and then EU docs also leaving cos of brexit. So UK is experiencing a severe shortage of docs and as such have relaxed their rules for entry of IMGs most of whom are moved towards Emergency care. Even at that, nhs wait time is horrible sha.
Canada and a lot of countries are not quite ready to toe this line yet, no surprise as regulated professions are not known to make licensure pathways easy because the more supply you have the less negotiating power your group wields.

Regulated professions always have these issues. It’s the demand and supply thingy, restrict the supply and for sure you can attract higher revenue. Lol. Having clear short, mid and long term goals, staying informed, taking advantage of opportunities to learn and network, patience, perseverance and a positive attitude is needed to forge ahead.

@adiepena I see you’ve gotten good responses to your questions. I just wanna chip in a lil bit.
It’s never easy to relocate with kids and I can’t even say that there is a perfect age to do so with less stress. Your decision would be largely based on assessing your personal emotional, physical and mental capabilities as well as your preferences. One thing to note is that since your kids would not be with you, you would not be eligible for child benefit or gst/hst credits. For quite a number of new immigrants with kids these come in handy in the initial period of settlement. In addition, being in a licensed profession often requires being willing to take on survival jobs or chart an alternative career path.
Full day school hours for us are 8:30-3:30. Kids would usually have half day Fridays ending at 12:30 or just go to school on alternate Fridays. There are also teacher professional development days aka PD days and other days when school is out but parents still need to work. Kids will only be allowed to stay home at age 12 after taking a mandatory course. So, in a nutshell what I’m trying to say is to emphasize what @salford1 said that daycare is always a factor to consider until your eldest turns 12. For now, you’ll most likely be looking at a circa $700-ish monthly child care bill for both kids with subsidy approval. That would cover before and after school for your first and full time Dayhome for your youngest. It’s really not a bad amount as child care costs go. Some government funded bridging/work experience programs actually cover your child care costs for the duration in which you are enrolled in the program.
It is a lot to handle 2 kids, and the decision ultimately lies with you. If you think you can cope, then it’ll be challenging but it is doable.

Please give me steps on the Baby process from A to Z please.
halos! What would you like to know? There’s not much of a process per se. your gp is your primary care giver and would provide prenatal care up until about the 28th or 32nd week (not sure again) when s/he would refer you to a obgyn. In some cases the gp provides care for the entire pregnancy. Delivery is taken at the hospital assigned to your zone based on your home address. Documentation for baby is done prior to discharge. You get the sin in the mail after a couple of weeks, you apply for the birth certificate at the nearest registry after about 4 weeks and keep up with weekly and fortnightly baby and mom appointments with the gp and book immunization appointments. (Insert thinking emoji- did I leave anything out?)

@temmytee1 if your mom meets the requirements for a tourist visa aka trv then she can apply for one on her own. As long as she can show evidence of employment or self-employment or other legitimate source of income, plans for accomodation and can sufficiently cover the cost of her travel, she would be fine. She would fill your name, occupation, date of birth and current place of residence on her family information form as part of her application. There would be no misrepresentation since you have not landed yet and as such you are not a PR yet.
You can find more information on the Canadian Trv thread
