Understand that Physics is quite competitive in the US because it is well-funded. Possessing an MS degree does help but it is not sweeping. Another thing is writing the PGRE. I just discovered that whilst doing my research for your question.

So see this run down of schools; I would give my recommendations right after.

Brandeis, Tufts, Utah state, Montana State, Buffalo**, NCSU, College of William and Mary, UTK **, Pittsburgh, North Texas, Arkansas, Chapel Hill, LSU, UConn, UF, New Hampshire**, North Eastern, Stony Brook**, NYU.

UConn, UF, LSU, Chapel Hill, North Eastern had no M.S but had high GPAs like > 3.8/4.0.

** matched your profile i.e GPA, GRE and International student but they all wrote PGRE (even when some scores were 50-60th percentile) and got fully-funded for PhD.

So maybe you should consider writing that PGRE instead of retaking the GRE General test. Except you have money for the 2 of them.

Riverside can work if you have faculty matching your interests. I have seen profiles much higher than yours get rejected for that very reason. But the General subject test/PGRE is important. All profiles had it even the ones less than yours that got in fully-funded for PhD.

Florida is dicey. You may want to look at USF as well.

Year of graduation does not matter as much as the things listed above. The PGRE definitely covers for your main GRE so take it seriously.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I've been researching on this issue for months and I'm fully aware of the importance of the PGRE. I'm only here for more opinions on the issue.

In response to your suggestion, I've actually written the PGRE (mentioned this in my first post ) I'm just waiting for the result. Thought my GRE could be better and that that would help me potentially, hence my decision to rewrite it.

UC Riverside actually mailed me and urged me to apply. That's one of the reasons I'm applying there. They have research options in biophysics, which is my area of interest (haemodynamics and bioengineering). I've been having doubts about Florida. Now I've made up my mind about them.

I'll have a look at the institutions you suggested.

Now considering LSU and UC Riverside, with 2 other safe options.

You are hiding everything about your profile but asking people to pull Hares out of hats for you by recommending schools that would match the very same hidden profile. It does not work that way.

Telling us a range of your GRE score is actually insulting. It was better you did not post it at all.

Nobody is mandated to help you here. If you need that help, perhaps you should respect them enough to give them enough information that can help them to help you. For e.g, even if you scored say 320, if your GPA is less than 3.0/4.0 it would still affect my recommendation of school choices for you. Same goes for if you had 310 and 3.9/4.0.

Admission decisions are holistically arrived at. This is being said for the umpteenth time.

A hearty thanks to everyone contributing to the success of this thread.

I'd like your opinion on this matter:

I'm applying for PhD Physics in the US for fall 2018. I've written the GRE (scored between 310 - 320) and the Physics GRE as well (result is pending).

My worry is that I don't have a Masters and my B. Sc degree was attained years ago. I'm thinking of applying to LSU, UC Riverside and U Florida. Should I look elsewhere? Which other schools should I consider if so? And what else do I need to do?

Aren't PSG like 3rd in Ligue 1? Does that mean Ligue 1 is better than La Liga or does that rule only apply to PL clubs when they lose in CL?

I thought it'd be too late to apply for fall 17, since we're already in Jan 17. Also most of the top 100 schools in Physics (US News), that I feel I have higher prospects of securing admission to, have ended registration.

I don't know if I can still meet the deadline for some others, since one'll still have to send transcripts to the schools and that could take a while. I was wondering of going for Spring 18 but don't know if funding will be available.

I'm in a pickle here.

Searching for school is part of research,You might as well start research before Grad school. (If you find a suitable school, let me know ) I am sure there are good schools that would accept the GRE score. 314 no be beans.

It's not about practicing alone only. You have to read too, to know why you got a question right or wrong, and so on.

Can't say exactly how long I studied for it. It was an one and off thing cos I was working at the same time.

The key thing for me was to identify my weak points- which was RC (after some tests), and do a little practice every day. Set a time table and adhere to it. Take a practice test (Q and V) once or twice a week and PowerPrep's 2 full length tests bfore taking the exam.

About textbooks, don't use Kaplan- their questions are soft when compared to the GRE. Magoosh is good though, and none of the practice tests out there are on the same level as the real exam, although some are close. But if you practice hard enough you'll do well on test day.

Make sure you conclude your preparations at least 3 days before the test day. After you're done, rest. Conserve your energy. You'll need it for the exam. Also eat well before going for the test.

My Q could've been better - during prep my score was usually around 164/165. I didn't take good care of my self a day to the test date and developed a headache. As a result my first V n Q weren't okay. Thank God for the 10-minute break- I washed my face and things improved from there.

In all, the GRE isn't too hard as believed. Once you get familiar with the system you'll ace it.

I didn't read as much as practice. For me it was practice, practice, practice. Just draw out a plan. Set a time table, adhere to it and monitor your progress.

Yes. Ther eare schools that do waive TOEFL but you have contact them and ask first. You explain that English is your language of study and you have a complete understanding of it. To be safe one can take TOEFL though. Maybe that's what I'll do, just in case.

Sorry for the late reply. SirRiddy and OGreene have given you the right answers. Just go to the website, have a list of the courses you took in school and the grades you scored.

Input everything in the WES calculator and your CGPA will be converted to a 4.0 scale.

Results out:

V- 154
Q-160
AWA- 4.0

Converted CGPA: 3.34/4.0 (OAU)

Target: Funded Physics & Astronomy Msc/Phd in US.
