Africa’s largest oil refinery, Dangote Refinery, has moved the date of production of premium motor spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, from June to the middle of July.

The President and CEO of the refinery, Aliko Dangote, confirmed the new production date to newsmen at the $20 billion facility in Lagos on Monday.

Dangote mentioned that the change in date was due to a slight delay, prompting the shift from the originally proposed June to mid-July.

The CEO said the refinery will commence production of petrol between 10 and 15 of July, while supply to local marketers will commence from the third week of the same month.

“We had a bit of delay, but PMS will start coming out by 10 to 15 of July. But then we want to keep it in tank to make sure that it settles. So by third week of July, we’ll be able coming out to take it into the market,” Dangote said.

Backstory

Earlier, the Dangote refinery was expected to begin production and supply of petrol this month, according to different reports.

For instance, analyst at the Standard and Poor’s’ Global (S&P Global) Commodities Insights predicted that the refinery will start supply of petrol in the fourth quarter of this year, particularly in the month of June.

“We are starting to see signs of activities, but all eyes are on when we’ll start to see gasoline production will commence from that project. There is a significant amount of pressure from the Nigerian government for significant volume of that supply to be sent to the domestic market.

“In reality, when we see that start scale up is still subject to debate. Dangote has recently been espousing some punchy timelines. They have most recently been saying that they are looking to produce gasoline by May. But in reality, our analyst expect that would be something like the fourth quarter of this year in a more realistic timeline,” the analysts said.

Exportation of Jet Fuel

Meanwhile, the refinery has begun the supply of jet fuel and diesel to domestic marketers in the country.

In addition, the $20 billion facility started exporting its first jet fuel cargo to Europe.

The first shipment, loaded onto the vessel “Doric Breeze,” left the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos on May 27th and is now on its way to Rotterdam, Netherlands, as per data from S&P Global Commodities at Sea.

Nigeria, despite being the most populous country in Africa and its top oil producer, ironically imports almost all of its fuel.

Primarily, this is attributed to the nation’s lack of sufficient refining infrastructure, a gap that the new refinery seeks to fill.

Dangote said the refinery is positioned to be one of the best petroleum refineries in the world.

“What we are doing is to be able to export petroleum products to anywhere and compete with any company. By next week, we’ll be producing about ten thousand ppm in terms of diesel which now what’s happening in that we import about 2 to 3 thousand. We will produce the best,” Dangote added.

There's this Toyota Camry 2001 that I wanted to buy, Nigerian used with clean body. Invited a friend who uses same car to check it out but he suggested the rings are not good and that the car smokes after dipping his finger into the exhaust pipe and saw dark smoke in his finger.
NB: He did not drive the car as there was no enough fuel. He only started the engine and left it for some times

Please what's your take on this? Should I invite a technician to check it out? What's the cost of rings assume I have to change them? What's the implication of the dark smoke?

Tsx is actually a nice ride. A compact executive sedan. Just know say no be anywhere u go dey go with the car. Also u will get enough compliments and offline rides. Also note that the parts can be pricy. Just look at the price of the bumper and headlights or just the grille on jiji. U go shout.

But to break even, a smaller engine would have been better.

If you have bought it and have started driving it, what's the fuel consumption like? What's the engine size? Is it the same 2.4L engine that is in previous generation?

I drive an 08 TSX. I only get good mileage on the highway. But city drive, hmmm. You must also make sure the Air/fuel sensor is good. Mine is bad. I have bought 2 different sensors and none have erased that check engine light. I believe that's what's making my city drive have a bit high fuel consumption.

As for e-hailing, I used it briefly in 2022. Only on weekends. Then subsidy has not been removed and the earning was a bit fair. But since Jan 2023, its been strictly a personal car.

Car started doing overheating after short drives, mechanic said it’s engine issues, fixed it but it’s still doing overheating! Later another mechanic said it’s radiator, changed radiator same thing, then they concluded it’s the engine, can you guys believe I bought borale engine !! Mechanic fixed it and before I could drive for about 1hr, engine totally Fried and melted !! Now they are saying it’s the radiator that caused it ! As a car owner, you should know things that can cause overheating and start checking them one by one before even changing the first engine. Things like your radiator cover, your radiator fans, water pump, the radiator itself, the radiator hoses, the thermostat might be stuck in close position if you have one in the car and other things. I believe you would have found the culprit without resoring to change of engine. Anyway the deed has been done.

My thermostat is in place and fan works as it should. No bypass... I cleaned the throttle body some weeks ago. The rpm drop is only when I'm on idle. The moment i move and rpm reached 1k+ vibration reduces and everything normalises.

How many fans does your car have? Can u confirm if they are all working well? There was a time I didn't know one of my fan has spoilt and I was experiencing all you have been experiencing. I only use my Ac on the move. If I get to a stop, I have to switch off because the RPM drops, the AC stops cooling and I get vibrations from the engine bay. I visited my mechanic and complained. They just switched on the car and watched it. One fan didn't come on. I changed it that day and that issue stopped. So you have to also think in that direction.

Watch him relocate back to this lawless shithole and establish his private practice.

THE STORY OF BETTY

Betty is my 2005 Honda Accord 4cyl.
I got her Nigerian used last year. When I got her, she was like a malnourished and physically abused woman.
-Her engine was smoking heavily and the old user deceived me by using very thick oil in addition to that evil thing called "stop smoking".
-There were crazy electrical abuse like the engine could start no matter where the gear stick is.
-The transmission was misbehaving mostly in cold mornings.
-Of course, the cat was way gone, but then some evil human decided to cut the wires of the 2 O2 sensors for reasons I still don't understand.
-Fuel economy was flushed down in the toilet.
-All steering buttons were not working, but somehow the horn was working.
-AC was working but not very powerful.
-SRS and Seatbelt light on the dashboard were on.
-Power steering was whining.

With all these problems, the question now is why did I keep this car?
1. The price was good
2. This car was still good, first body and all. Engine looked neat. Abs was working fine. AC was working, though not optimal. So I told myself that the worst that could happen is a new engine and trans.
3. I wanted the challenge cos I love solving car problems.

So, first thing I did was to change engine oil and filter with 5w30. Omo! My car became a smoke machine. I had to add the "stop smoking" to avoid the embarrassment while I thought of what to do.

I decided to try restoring the engine since it doesn't look bad from outside. When the engine was opened, the mechanic was amazed that the engine was completely in shape inside. The cylinder lining was perfect. Crank shaft, metals, pistons, all were in good shape. The top was also intact. The only thing that needed work was the rings. In two days, the engine was back together and running with 5w30 oil and no single smoke.
Then came the VTEC problem which was solved by replacing the filter screen in the VTEC solenoid.
Then came the VTC problem and that persky p0011 that dealt with me. After replacing VTC solenoid twice, the problem went away.
Then the transmission. After replacing the ATF twice without much improvement, I decided to rebuild it. Why would I throw something away without first trying to fix it? That is not me. Call me cheap, I don't care. After putting the tranny back in the car and filling with oil, first start, tranny no gree shift. Second start, car no gree enter drive. I was already sweating from my nyash. Infact, almost the whole day, tranny was severely acting up. But by some magic, after several tests, tranny started behaving. Now, 3mths later, tranny is still as smooth as butter. Victory!
Power steering pump was replaced with a tokunbo part and steering became smooth with absolutely no whine or vibration when turning.

About the electrical abuse, there was a strange wire running from the under dash fuse box all the way to the starter in the engine. I knew that wire was not put there by Honda, so I tore it out. As expected, car was no longer able to start. But I noticed the car will start occasionally after pressing the brake pedal randomly. So I looked at the brake pedal and noticed that the small plastic that presses on the brake switch was missing and a piece of paper was in place. It was pressing the switch enough to turn off the brake light but not enough to allow the car start. I removed the paper and constructed a good plastic in its place and care has started every single time since then.
- As for the cats, I had to change both O2 sensors. I didn't replace the cat. I simply bypassed it and removed the cat error code for good.
- So the steering wheel buttons. I told my electrician to bring out the steering flex reel and of course one of the two flex reel inside is completely cut. Someone diverted the horn signal through one of the intact cables. Once again, I decided to go the cheap route. I decided to solder the broken cables together. I didn't think this would work. My electrician told me I was wasting my time. But I gave him back the cable reel to install and 5mth later, all steering wheel buttons are still working.
- AC just needed gas and is still going 5mths later
-SRS and Seatbelt light was due to the driver's seatbelt buckle that was spoilt. Just changed it and all light went off.
Car is 100% functional now
FUEL CONSUMPTION:
I filled my tank up and recet my trip counter. When the fuel light came on, I had 382mils on the trip counter. Car continued till 410miles when I decided to go buy fuel (car didn't stop, meaning it still had fuel). I filled it up with 57litres (14.98gal). After calculations, I got 27mpg of pure city driving. That is veeery good for a rebuilt engine. Very few cars here can boast of this mileage.

So next I want to change the side mirrors to txs side mirrors with signal light and if money enter, I'll upgrade the wheels, upgrade the bumper to DC bumper, and give it a good paint job.

Many thanks. I'll try and find someone with an advanced scanner. I used my small scanner and got no code. The scanner cant clear anything though. Is there an affordable scanner you can recommend?

All I have is a small Bluetooth scanner. But if I need to do a major scanning, I know where I take it to.

I drive an acura too. My tpms kept showing for so many months. I kept planning to scan and find the particular one to replace. The day i scanned it, the guy cleared the error code there and its over a year that I have seen that tpms prompt in my instrument cluster. So I suggest u make sure your tyres are adequately inflated to the correct sizes, scan with a high end scanner that can read tpms codes and clear. Then proçeed from there.
