The Imo State Police Command has rearrested a murder suspect, Miracle Ajogu, who fled from the command’s custody when gunmen on the early hours of Monday attacked the police command headquarters, razed part of it and burnt over 50 vehicles.

The attackers also invaded the Owerri Correctional Centre and freed 1,884 inmates and told them to go ” Jesus has risen. You have reason to be here again.”

They equally attacked a military base at Umuorji on Owerri- Onitsha expressway, burnt one soldier in a car and set ablaze four operational vehicles belonging to the military.

A source, who confirmed the murder suspect’s rearrest to The PUNCH, disclosed that he had been brought to police command headquarters and would be charged to court in no distant time.

Our correspondent learnt on Thursday that the presence of the suspect in his town in Nkwerre in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of the state caused panic among the villagers.

The source said “The police have rearrested one Miracle Ajogu of Onusa Nkwerre in Nkwerre LGA of Imo State. He murdered his father and was subsequently arrested. The case was transferred to the command’s headquarters in Owerri by the Division.

“He was among the suspects that escaped from the state Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri on Monday when the hoodlums attacked the headquarters of the police in Imo State.

Soldiers of the 144 Battalion, stationed at Ariaria junction, along the Enugu – Port Harcourt expressway, Wednesday, killed 11 gunmen who engaged them in a fierce gun battle. This is coming 48 hours after three policemen were ambushed and murdered by hoodlums in Abiriba, in Ohafia council area of the state.

The gunmen, said to be numbering about 50, engaged the soldiers at their checkpoint at the Ariaria junction. Sources told Vanguard that before the gunmen arrived the area; the soldiers had gathered intelligence and laid in wait for them. As soon as the gunmen arrived, they opened fire, but the soldiers responded. In the ensuing gun duel which was said to have lasted for over 30 minutes, 11 persons were shot dead in the duel as they bowed to superior fire power of the soldiers. Other members of the gang reportedly fled with bullet wounds.

However, there are conflicting reports about the number of casualties; while some sources said 16 persons were killed, among them, a soldier, a top military source in Aba said only 11 gunmen were killed while there was no casualty on the side of the army. “No soldier was killed, but we killed 11 of the gunmen. I assure the public that there was no casualty among the soldiers.” he said. Reacting to the incident, Abia State government commended the soldiers for their gallantry, stressing that it is committed to the protection of lives and properties of the residents of the state. Commissioner for Information,Chief John Okiyi Kalu, who stated this, warned youths of the state not to put themselves in harm’s way by attacking security agents under any guise. “It is a good development; we welcome every necessary measure to protect the good people of Abia State. We call on our young men and women not to put themselves in harm’s way by attacking security agents under any guise. We also urge them not to allow themselves to be used by politicians for any reason to cause insecurity. Abia State government will do everything possible to protect law-abiding citizens without fear.”

Four persons were reportedly killed and one admitted in hospital after renewed cult activities at Okija in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

No fewer than seven persons have lost their lives in the community under similar circumstances in the past few months.

Last week, a young man had his head severed in the presence of his nonagenarian mother and taken away by suspected cultists.

It was gathered that three persons were killed on Monday, while the latest victim, who hailed from Umuatuegwu village, was hit by a stray bullet when rival cults were exchanging gunfire.

The source said, “As I am speaking, there is commotion at the Nkwo Market and the disturbing thing is that these boys are using the opportunity to extort money from people.

“Those who refuse to give them money usually have their cars torched. The development has forced many people to hurriedly leave the market for their homes.”

He said police personnel had been deployed in the area, adding that the expectation was that they would return normalcy to the town.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said he had yet to get the report of the incident.

On his first day in office, President Joe Biden is beginning the immense task of dismantling former President Donald Trump’s nativist legacy on immigration, issuing an executive order to end Trump’s controversial travel ban on noncitizens from 13 countries.


The policy, colloquially known as the “Muslim ban,” first went into effect in January 2017 and became one of Trump’s signature immigration policies. The ban has slowed or altogether halted legal immigration from certain countries that the former administration deemed to be security threats, keeping families apart and even stymieing refugee resettlement.

The travel ban was Trump’s first major action on immigration policy, setting the tone for the chaotic four years that followed for immigrants while galvanizing public opposition.

When the ban was announced, it resulted in mass protests in airports across the US where people from the affected countries, which were initially limited to those with majority-Muslim populations, were held for questioning for hours.

This led immigrant advocates to call it a discriminatory “Muslim ban,” citing Trump’s campaign promise to establish a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” Democrats in Congress, who for years had expressed conflicting positions on immigration policy, coalesced in opposition to the policy, using it to present a united front in condemnation of the xenophobia it represented.

The ban was amended several times in the face of numerous court challenges arguing that Trump did not have the legal authority to issue it and that it unlawfully discriminated against Muslims.
