Cryptocurrency project DeFi100 (CRYPTO: D100) has informed its investors that it defrauded them of their funds. What Happened: According to a Saturday tweet by a cryptocurrency analyst, DeFi100 announced that it scammed its users in the following unkind and inelegant message: “We scammed you guys, and you can’t do s**t about it.” According to the analyst, the scammers behind the project made away with $32 million in investor funds. The Twitter user also warned his followers that he expects more of such instances to happen: "As the bull market fades, many projects will too! Expect a huge increase in exit scams over these next few months. Never invest in projects that are very new, with anonymous teams, made as memes, and have a lack of real utility. Stay safe everyone!" The DeFi100 site (defi100.org) is now down. Wild West Market: The news follows April reports of two Turkish cryptocurrency exchanges allegedly performing an exit scam. The first one, Thodex, saw local authorities detain 62 people under accusations of defrauding its customers of $2 billion worth of cryptocurrency. The second one, Vedibitcoin, saw its bank accounts be frozen after announcing that it would cease all of its activities due to financial strains. https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/21/05/21247332/32-million-stolen-as-crypto-project-defi100-pulls-the-rug

The Presidency has dissociated President Muhammadu Buhari from Gimba Yau Kumo, who was recently declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in connection with a $56 million fraud. Some national dailies and online media platforms had claimed that Yau Kumo was a son-in-law of President Muhammadu Buhari, having allegedly been married to one of his daughters, Fatima, since 2016. However, in a statement on Friday night by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the Presidency described the attempt to link the alleged fraudster as “an attempt to generate views and sell copies of sensational reporting”. According to the statement, the alleged suspect was indeed married to an unnamed member of the President’s family, but clarified that the said marriage ended sometime back. Addressing the supposed relationship between President Buhari and the alleged suspect, the Presidency noted the ongoing prosecution move by the ICPC only supports the authenticity of the administration’s fight against corruption, not minding who is involved. “A running story to the effect that the ICPC has declared “an inlaw of the President” wanted in connection with fraud involving the large sum of money , USD65 million to be exact. “This should normally be an affirmation that our anti-corruption agencies/institutions are truly independent and allowed unfettered freedom by the President. Which infact is the case. “That a state institution can issue such is a measure of the administration’s commitment to accountability, equality and justice. “To set the records straight, the person declared wanted by the ICPC is not an inlaw to President Buhari. “While at some point in time the said fugitive from justice had been linked to a family member in marriage, that relationship has ended some years ago. “It is therefore unfortunate to bring the President’s family into this case.It is in our view an attempt to generate views and sell copies of sensational reporting. “The President’s position at all times is that the law be allowed to take its course. As is well known of him, President Muhammadu Buhari will not provide any cover for crime, no matter who is involved,” the statement reads https://thenationonlineng.net/56m-fraud-yau-kumo-isnt-buharis-son-in-law-says-presidency/ |
Donald Trump’s new “communications platform”, which boasts a blog-like format, has flopped on social media since its unveiling last week, according to a report. Following his banning from mainstream social media websites amid the Capitol insurrection, including Facebook and Twitter the former president set up “From the Desk of Donald J Trump”. NBC News reported that engagement with the new blog is drawing a considerably smaller audience than his now-banned social media accounts ever did. Citing data compiled with BuzzSumo, a social media analytics company, the broadcaster says the platform has only raked in 212,000 engagements. In comparison, a single post on the former president’s Twitter account to his 88 million followers could receive more than a million likes in one go, mainlining his every musing to the front of national attention. The outlet defined engagements as backlinks and social interactions such as likes, shares, and comments on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Reddit. The Independent has reached out to Mr Trump for comment. On the “From the Desk” site, users can’t comment or interact with the post, but can only share them to other platforms. “In the case of Trump’s new platform, it is so technologically primitive that there is no way for his followers to even migrate,” Jeremy Blackburn, an assistant professor of computer science at New York’s Binghamton University, told NBC News. “Who cares about a platform where you can’t even own the libs? There are plenty of other newsletters that people have been adding to their spam boxes for years.” Last week, the Facebook Oversight Board upheld Mr Trump’s ban from the platform, forcing the former president to continue to share his thoughts through the official statements released by his office. Previously, the former president would see high-level engagement on Twitter and Facebook from users and the media with Mr Trump tweeting frequently throughout the day. On the new site, Mr Trump continues to offer a mixture of informal political endorsement and attacks, general news, and personal updates, which can also be received by email. However, his casual and pithy jabs against “fake news media” and targeted vilification of his political enemies such as Wyoming Rep Liz Cheney are no longer appearing to land as successfully. More broadly, interest in the former president has also been waning in terms of his stature in the social media sphere, polls show. Axios reported exclusive data from NewsWhip in May which showed that social media interactions concerning the president had fallen by 91 per cent since January. While interest in Mr Trump maintained consistent time throughout the election and his subsequent loss, it has since dropped drastically. Exclusive data from SocialFlow reported by the outlet showed that clicks to Trump stories dipped 81 per cent from January to February and another 56 per cent from February to March. Mr Trump, however, has maintained that social media platforms are worse off without him and that he, in return, is much better without them. “When I put out a press release, you see what happens. Everybody is waiting and I think I’m getting better and more coverage with that than I did with tweeting,” Mr Trump said in March on Newsmax. He added: “But no, I like this better than Twitter. Actually they did us a favour, this is better.” https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/trumps-new-blog-is-a-flop-on-social-media-data-shows/ar-BB1gChjR |
Ghana owes a total of $160m for gas supplied to its largest power producer, Volta River Authority, from Nigeria through the West Africa Gas Pipeline, our correspondent has learnt. N-Gas Limited, a company owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Chevron and Shell, buys gas from oil companies in Nigeria and transport it to Ghana through the $1bn WAGP. The pipeline, which is operated by the West Africa Pipeline Company Limited, was built to supply natural gas from Nigeria to customers in Benin, Togo and Ghana. N-Gas has an off-take agreement with Ghana to supply 120 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to the VRA. But supply to the country had fallen short of the contractual volume in recent years. “There is a current arrangement between the gas suppliers and the off-taker that the volume will be 60mmBtu,” the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited, Harriet Wereko-Brobby, told our correspondent in response to questions sent via a text message. She said the off-taker (VRA) had established a payment security arrangement for gas consumed to halt “debt accumulation going forward.” “There is still an outstanding debt of around $160m to be paid to the supplier, N-Gas, and it is expected that about $30m will be paid shortly,” Wereko-Brobby added. GhanaWeb recently reported that the volume of gas supplied to Ghana from Nigeria for power production had reduced by about 50 per cent. It said the situation had been attributed to the inability of Ghana to settle its long-standing debts as stipulated in the gas supply contract, and vandalism of gas pipelines in Nigeria. The Board Chairman, VRA, Kweku Awotwi, was quoted to have said, “We are at about half of what we have been contractually promised, which is not good enough. There are many reasons for that: the vandalism of pipelines and the fact that we have not paid our bills. We owe them about GH180m; what do you expect them to do? “Now, we are getting the gas because the VRA is pre-paying for that gas. We are putting in Letters of Credit to get the gas.” In 2016, Nigeria saw a resurgence of militant attacks in the Niger Delta that caused the nation’s oil production to plummet to a near 30-year low and disrupted gas supply to power plants. Commenting on the debt owed by Ghana for the supply of gas through the pipeline in May last year on the sidelines of an event in Badagry, the Managing Director, WAPCo, Mr. Walter Perez, told our correspondent, “We are delivering gas now because we have put arrangement in place for Ghana to prepay for the deliveries that they receive, and so that is working. We have every expectation that this will continue to work.” https://punchng.com/ghana-owes-160m-for-gas-supply-from-nigeria/ |
Police operatives and their counterparts from the Nigerian Army and Department of State Services have killed one Commander Ikonta and six other militia members in Imo State. The men, who were identified as members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, were killed during an early morning raid on their hideout at Awomama village, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, on Saturday. Three policemen and one army officer sustained serious bullet injuries during the exchange of gunfire with the insurgents and are presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. A top security source explained that the slain militia members were responsible for the attack on the Imo State Police headquarters and the Nigerian Custodial facility on April 5, 2021. They have also carried out series of calculated, violent attacks on security personnel and formations in the South-East and South-South parts of the country. The source said, “As the security forces approached the base of the insurgents, they came under rapid fire from the group. In a bold response, the joint security forces fought back gallantly. “The forces eventually neutralized the overall commander of the insurgents in the South-East popularly known as Commander Ikonso and six other armed fighters of the insurgent group. https://punchng.com/breaking-security-operatives-gun-down-ipob-militia-commander-six-others-in-imo/ |
