Joint Double Degree Programme: Second Batch of ABU Students Leave For China-NUC

The second batch of 300- Level engineering students from Ahmadu Bello University chosen on account of their high academic performance have left Nigeria for Central South University (CSU), Changsha, China where they are expected to spend two years for a joint double degree programme in traffic and transportation engineering as well as railway equipment and control engineering.

The students, who had already gone to China for the programme, comprised 29 undergraduate and four doctoral students all drawn from Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering.

It would be recalled that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Ahmadu Bello University and Central South University (CSU), Changsha, China to pave way for ABU’s 300-Level engineering students with higher CGPA after a selection interview to go to CSU to complete the remaining two years in order to earn the engineering degree.

The programme is to last for a period of five consecutive years and the essence is to produce sufficient indigenous engineers who will continue to build and sustain railway infrastructure in Nigeria and beyond.

Speaking at a brief but colorful farewell reception for the departing students, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Ibrahim Garba, said the programme would enable the students to earn dual degrees of China and Nigeria in traffic and transportation engineering respectively.

Prof Garba said ABU invested quite a lot in the programme as over N10 million was spent to freight the students to China and that they should therefore bear in mind that they were going on public funds partly, and then of the CSU’s scholarship.

The Vice-Chancellor, who expressed gratitude to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and Central South University, Changsha for the realization of this all important project, expressed hope that by next year CCECC would come up with another scholarship for another set of students to benefit.

“Let me congratulate this second batch of our students that are departing to CSU. By no means, you have also become part of the chosen ones that are going to utilize this very unique opportunity that has come our way in Nigeria and ABU in particular.

“So far, we are very happy to have realized that the first batch that we sent have not disappointed us; they have actually made us very proud by performing very well, living well, respecting the traditions and situations in China; and by so doing, Chinese are equally appreciating and respecting Nigerians”, he said.

Prof Garba, who reminded them that they were not the first set to be in China from ABU, also said they could gain a lot of experience from those that went there before them.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Director, Directorate of University Advancement, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, recalled that in the last few years the Federal Government had invested a huge amount of resources to build the railway infrastructure all over the country.

Prof Ahmed described the collaboration between China and Nigeria as an opportunity to educate Nigerians towards building a vibrant nation that could stand the test of time.

Speaking on behalf of the benefiting students, Aliyu Kasimu, who expressed gratitude to the university and the Vice-Chancellor for the opportunity, said there was a similarity between China and Nigeria.

The benefitting students promised to not only make Ahmadu Bello University proud but also Nigeria as a whole, assuring that the efforts of the university would never be in vain.

The programme all started in 2017 when ABU was picked out of seven Nigerian universities to begin as a pilot project a 3+2 joint degree programme with China Central South University (CSU), Changsha, where China’s railway technology was first invented.

In September, last year, a total of 45 300-Level students and 13 academic staff all from the Faculty of Engineering were flown to China for the joint Bachelor’s degree programme in engineering at Central South University (CSU), Changsha.

Of the 45 students, 30 were sponsored by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the other 15 are by CSU. They are expected to specialize in Central South University, especially in civil engineering, traffic and transportation engineering as well as railway equipment and control engineering.

PoliticsRe: Pressure Mounts On APC To Disqualify Obaseki From Guber Race - Thisday Newspaper by vixpal: 6:38pm On Jun 09, 2020
Among the inconsistencies cited in Obaseki’s certificates are that his O/Level results showed that he has three credits but despite that he spent only three years to allegedly bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Studies from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, in 1976, without an A/Level result.

A/Levels are required for a three-year direct entry course in Nigerian universities. If you have O/Level credits in at least five subjects, then University of Ibadan and a indeed other universities required a mandatory four-year course. The question APC is dealing with include: could three O/Level credits/passes have given Obaseki admission into University of Ibadan as required by law? And if indeed, he got the admission, could he have graduated in three years instead of mandatory four years? Would APC not be facing another Bayelsa scenario when the NWC was blamed for fielding a candidate with a dubious certificate?

Besides, there’s a discrepancy in his degree certificate and that of another governorship aspirant, Mr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, who graduated the same year in University of Ibadan with a Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering

PoliticsMany Feared Dead, 300 Injured, 50 Missing As Two Anambra Communities Clash by vixpal(op): 6:16pm On May 07, 2020
FRESH facts have emerged on the communal clash between Umumbo and Omor communities in Ayamelum local government area of Anambra State, with an eye witness claiming that many people were feared dead, while no fewer than 300 farmers sustained various degrees of injuries during the clash.

At press time, it was gathered that about 50 persons allegedly abducted during the bloody clash were still missing.

A large number of houses, shops and rice mills belonging to Umumbo community were also destroyed.

The speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Uche Okafor, who represents the constituency in the state legislature, was accompanied by heavily armed military and mobile policemen to quell the bloody clash.

Unconfirmed number of people were said to have been arrested, even as those at large were being fished out by security operatives.

The two communities are among the major food-producing areas of Anambra State, where rice and other grains are produced in large quantity

The latest squabble was the high point of a protracted land dispute between the two communities, which started during the last dry season.

According to the eye witness, a section of one of the communities allegedly breached the gentleman’s agreement reached between the two traditional rulers of the two communities sometime last year, thus igniting the latest clash. Following the clash, many people ran away from their houses for fear of being killed, as both communities pushed towards each other in a severe confrontational manner.

Health101-year-old Italian Man Recovers From Coronavirus by vixpal(op): 6:34pm On Mar 27, 2020
A 101-year-old Italian man has been released from the hospital after recovering from COVID-19, according to a CNN report.

The man was admitted to a hospital in northeastern Italy last week after testing positive for the virus and left the hospital on Thursday, according to Gloria Lisi, the deputy mayor of Rimini, Italy.

Lisi said the recovery of the man, only known as "Mr. P," is "truly extraordinary" and provided "hope for the future."

Mr. P was born in 1919 amid the Spanish flu outbreak, where an estimated 30 million to 50 million people died due to the illness.

"The family brought [Mr. P.] home yesterday evening," Lisi said, affirming that his story teaches that "even at 101 years the future is not written."

The city of Rimini documented 1,189 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday as the country surpassed 8,000 coronavirus related deaths.

I am happy to announce an economic stimulus package to help our residents cushion the effects of our #StayAtHome directive to stop the spread of #COVID19.

This first stage is targeting 200,000 households at an estimation of 6 people per household. We hope to ramp it up quickly.

The stimulus package will contain bags of rice, beans, garri, bread, dry pepper, drinking water and vitamins. We want each ration to last for 14 days as we continue to evaluate the impact of #COVID19.

Please stay home with your loved ones. We want the best for you.. ..BOS
