What you are describing is called a process/method not a kind/type.
My Musume friend just sugested to me that what you might be trying to say is the process of collecting history from undernith the earth but it is calle excavation(process) not kind and the pit it is collected from is called a DIG.I can link you directly to him if U r interested in such thing that is if you are a history student.
