PoliticsRe: Clinton: Poverty Helping Fuel Violence In Nigeria by Wallie(m): 5:16pm On Feb 15, 2012
Jarus:
My own take is this: The root cause of Boko Haram is misinterpretation of religious texts by a few religious extremists, but poverty fueled it by provided an army of illiterate, easily brainwashable, vulnerable youth.

SLS blames it on poverty, and you call him a religious/ethnic bigot; Clinton says same, you call him senile. Poverty-violence relationship is almost unimpeachable. The poorest countries/regions in the world(Somalia, Congo, etc) are the most violence-ridden.

My problem with that SLS statement is the time, not the statement itself, and a wrong assumption that making more funds available for the violence-ridden region will eliminate poverty, where histiry shows that more allocation=more money into governors private coffers.

If you want to disagree with these people(SLS, Clinton etc), intellectualize it, compare facts, not imputing motive to their view.
You can’t stop a handful of people from going rouge based on religion but when those that went rogue have the backing of the populace then you’re dealing with an issue that is not religious merely exacerbated by it. They would have easily found another common denominator like nationalism or tribalism that unites them. Germany, MEND, Shiites vs. Sunnis comes to mind.
Wtf is wrong with these goddamn westerners.

Who is expected to make "direct investment" in the north?

The private sector, or the public sector?

If the latter, why? What moral right do they have to a larger share of government spending than what they've received over the past 40-odd years?

It  is nobody's fault but their own that nothing came of it.
I think you missed his point. He's only taking cognizance of the current BH situation. Nobody denies the fact that the Northern politicians have nothing to show for their share of the national pie.

But to arrest the current problems with BH, he’s suggesting that the government should not only look for a military solution and should address the underlying issue that caused a group like BH to be welcomed. Same is true for MEND and other like groups.

Yesterday is gone along with the billions of stolen dollars but today is here and we can make sure that the money earned does not end up like that of yesterday’s.

There is nothing wrong in borrowing if the loan is invested.

Besides, so we are only owing $5b at the moment? Why did opposition make it look
as if our external debt profile had risen in excess of maximum limits.

Secondly, why is Daily Trust newspaper sounding it in our ears that the loan is
from Islamic Development bank? afterall, only $600 million out of the total $7.9 billion
loan sum is to be sourced from the so-called Islamic Dev Bank. I suspect this pro-muslim north newspaper.
There’s nothing wrong in borrowing money for capital projects but -

1. Are there any guaranties that the pipelines won't be re-vandalized once fixed?
2. The external debt is $5b but what is the internal debt (money owed by states)?
3. Why can't the surplus money earned from the present high crude oil price be used to finance the project?
4. How is the money going to be paid back?
5. What happens if the price of crude oil crashes?
EducationRe: Rochas Declares Free Education In Imo State To University Level. by Wallie(m): 11:05pm On Feb 14, 2012
I think this is a commendable effort by Rochas. Imo is a relatively small state. There are different levels of problems facing residents of the state and there are different ways of tackling them. Rochas choosing to tackle education does not mean that he does not realize that there are large numbers of unemployed youths.

If everything remains equal, especially the barrier of entry into state Universities, the number of people educated before this program will not change even after its implementation. The only thing that will change is indigenes no longer dropping out of college due to their finances.

The next step to his problem solving approach, after implementation of this program, should be finding a place for the educated youths to earn income. He might have to strengthen vocational schools that teach hands-on skills while simultaneously investing in an environment that spurs entrepreneurial drive.

Can the same program work in Lagos? I doubt it because Lagos is more of a melting pot with people from all tribes in significant numbers. Moreover, it does not seem fair to ask tax payers that have been living in Lagos for decades to subsidize the education of Lagos indigenes! It will be better for Lagos to take the approach of strengthening schools and the entrepreneurial atmosphere so that all the residents can benefit the same.

Dude, if only you were here with me to see the original draft of that post; the final version which I posted above reads like Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare.

I appreciate your advice, but the truth is (just like youve advised me to do) Nigerians would rather be "Less Confrontational". When is the truth going to be told? When are people going to finally decide to stand up for what is right? Nigerians are like Ostriches--- always hiding from reality.

If slapping the sense into them is what is needed then thats what needs to be done. Miraculously, theyve defied every method known to man.

Infact, the story is starting to bore me. Im getting sick of it 'cause the self-deciet is getting nauseating.

dmainboss:
Nigeria has many poor people and the economy is really bad but these statistics are far from the truth. All around, people are buying new cars and building new houses and they are not politicians like many of u come here to shout. All those people selling under oshodi bridge do not live on $1 a day. Most of these agencies that produce these reports are only producing reports that will fetch them foreign aid. I have worked with some of them before. NGOs are one of the worst organisations in the country. Maybe in the north, the statistics might be close to the truth, but in the south, it is completely false. Do understand my point. I am not saying Nigerians are not poor or that they are not suffering, but that the figures and statistics being peddled about are false. And there is also another side to it all and that is the fact that Nigeria is very fertile for business. While more Nigerians are crying and many are running away, more and more foreigners are scrambling to come to Nigeria to do business. The number of people seeking Nigerian visas have sky rocketed in the last few years. A country with 150milliom people is a gold mine. Do u know Nigerian beweries plant in the south east is the biggest in Africa. Yet they complain that they. Cannot meet the demand of the Nigerian public. All the breweries combined are struggling to meet the Nigerian public demand. You can verify from these companies. Who drinks these millions of bottles of beer everyday? Is it the politicians? Some of u lot are so negativen u might just be undoing urselves. I complain about infrastructure and amenities in Nigeria but I never complain about money because Nigeria is full of it and if you are jonsing, u are on ur own!
All which people? Do you think a subset of Lagos or even the entire Lagos represents Nigeria? How many people in Lagos are rich and how many people are in Nigeria? Nigeria has 167 million people and about 15 million live in Lagos. How many of those 15 million people earn an income? Once you find the number of income earners, how many of them buy new cars and build houses as you claim and what percentage of the Nigerian population do they represent?

Here’s a quick survey:

Count the total number of people that you know in Nigeria including your neighbors and co-workers. How many of them built their own house and drive a new car? How many of them earn more than NGN 113,000 per year (exclude people that live off someone else)? What’s the percentage of those that earn over NGN 113k when compared to the total number of people that you know?

Here’s a factoid:

A family of seven that earns NGN 500,000 per annum will survive on less than 2 dollars a day!

Each person will need $2 X 356 days X 160 conversion rate = NGN 113,920. Since there are 7 members in the family (father, mother and five children), the breadwinner of the family will need to earn more than NGN 797,440 per annum to survive on more than $2 per day!

How many of you earn that much money?

Hahaha I thought a few weeks ago some of you claimed the figures were false and that youve never seen poor people in Nigeria? At least we see that ChrisEnzo Character jumping in the ring yarning rubbish. Let me tell you something: IF GEJ CONTESTS TOMORROW (2015)---- HE WILL WIN! IF HE CONTESTS IN 2050---- HE WILL WIN!!! Why? Not only are Nigerians malnourished in the stomach, they are also famished in the brain. Their thinking mechanism is not only faulty, the thing don knock patapata. What would make a man sell his and his children's generation for a bag of rice? Then, (in the usual Naija evil way of justifying a terrible action) he'll make excuses like : "Well he had no shoes" or "Niger-Delta has never ruled" etc So, if a man had no shoes or a certain section of the country has never ruled, the remedy is to foist on the Nation a Known crook that has no single achievement to his name during all his years in Governance?!

UNNECESSARY TRIBALISM!!!!

The Politicians know this and they use it to their advantage. Not a few days ago, an opportunity to revamp the country, rid her of the old thieves, and start afresh presented itself, but what happened? Some people suddenly remembered what was done to their GrandFather's between 1967-1970. So, like the Jan.15, 1966 coup "Short-Sightedness", again, threw dirt on an otherwise Golden Opportunity and Noble Effort. Dont knock me for drawing parallels on subjects such as these; I know the "usual" Nigerian way is to ignore the truth and pretend its not there (Hoping it would somehow go away). Sorry, but I'm a student of history and I can smell a De Ja Vu from a thousand miles.

Imagine if Occupy Nigeria had totally engulfed the Nation. And a situation occured where the likes of IBB, Dimeji Bankole, The Ubah Brothers and other known corrupt Nigerians had to go on the run and flee for their lives. . . .  Wait, lets not even go that far, Lets imagine if the Yorubas did not harrass Remi Tinubu or Femi Otedola or if the Northerners did not burn down Emirs Palaces or buildings belonging to IBB. Lets assume they also felt the crooks from their Regions were sanctimonious and "everything wey dem dey do e dey right because na our pikin na the same language all of us dey talk" . . .  See, why I say things are moving dangerously close to 1966/67 again?

Keep playing yourselves and telling me you "Never do anything because we dont want to be part of Nigeria anyways". So, if your Mother is sick, to cure her you'll always hide the medicine that'll get her well? Oh ok, I'm getting yall now. Keep deceiving yourselves thinking youre deceiving others. If youre so serious about seceding why havent all your Politicians done something about it? Why havent they all gathered up all the Billions they get monthly and used it to start an effort instead of stashing it in their Bank Accounts overseas? Why havent they started some form of movement and agitation that would DEFINITELY be supported by the Igbo Nation worldwide?! Oh, you really believe in your head that your leaders love Abuja Handouts any less than a crooked Politician from Lagos or Kano? lmao

Keep deceiving yourselves. They come to the village meeting and scream Biafra and Igbo Kwenu and feed you with all kinds of propaganda about why they cant make your Region El Dorado ( "Those that fought against Biafra are starving us of funds"wink, but then they conveniently forget to tell you about the illegal Swiss Bank Accounts that they have in their concubines' names and in which the monthly allocation from Abuja, that is meant for the Development of the State, is being held. They "hate" Umu Hausa and Yoruba Mgbati Yoruba, but then they go behind your backs and Parley with the so-called "enemies" over champagne & Lobster on how to sell unborn Generations into slavery; But youre not angry or upset. Why? Oh, yeah, I remember, HE SPEAKS YOUR LANGUAGE!!! You must be dumb, fo*olish and terribly st*upid, if you think any politician really wants Nigeria to split today.

There will be more of these kind of sad stories of hunger coming out of Nigeria for Centuries to come if all hands do not join together to crush the real enemies of the state: THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS! If anyone thinks the elite will put laws in place to limit their constant flowing largesse, then I'll advice you to wake up from that dream and face the nightmare that is your reality. If you think the elite will let "it all go" without a fight; you must be from Mars.

They are entrenching their children in positions where they will be on top and Your children will continue another generation of slavery. So when do you think this whole cycle will end?

Nigerians really ought to be the most stu*pid people on the face of the Earth, the same tribalism that was of no benefit to your Grandfathers or Fathers, you really expect that it'll benefit you? If you dont know it; YOUR CHILDREN ARE IN DEEP SH^IT unless something changes drastically, and soon! Now theyve brainwashed them not only with tribalism, Religion is the next scam. You cant talk to certain Nigerians (thankfully I only know these kind on-line) without them quoting passages of the Bible. . . . even when an obvious wrong has been done.

Let me stop here, so I dont seem to be rambling. Nigeria is a lost cause and the Youth are even worse than their fathers. Even if Nigeria was to break today, I think I can accurately pin-point the Regions that will falter because of either lack of Resources or because of "Low moral" value. Yes, when you see wrong happening and you turn the other way instead of confronting it head-on (or if you tell lies in place of the truth) : YOU HAVE A LOW MORAL VALUE
. Theres a reason why Politicians here resign when caught in a seemingly, "harmless", lie. As a leader, you have to be of impeccable moral character.

The figures are there for all to see. Nigeria will get worse as time goes on. And if this generation knows whats good for them, theyd do themselves a lot of good to confront their destiny now, rather than later.

I've said my piece.
Try to be less confrontational as you might lose your message in the post but I do agree with your message 100%. People fail to realize who the real enemies are!

No hope for Nigeria until:

1. The country breaks up into to more manageable components so as to weaken the severely strong center,  overcompensating for decades of flawed devolution of powers.

2. The suffering triggers a revolution, likely leading to a civil war, that will see the violent purge of a generation of profoundly corrupt political class.

Outside these, I see no hope for Lord Luggard's 1914 experiment.
In my opinion, breaking up Nigeria will only lead to greater problems including instability in the smaller countries. There are way too many tribes to successfully break up! Also, how would you divide the oil money? Do you think that states with no IGR will just fold their arms and watch their meal ticket disappear?

Can you imagine being forced into an arranged marriage and your wife of so many decades who recently won the lottery now wanting a divorce without giving you a share? Will it matter to you that she used her own money to buy the lottery ticket?

What is needed is true federalism where each state controls the resources within their border and pay taxes to the federal government. To make it fair, a special tax rate can be set up for natural resources.

Any state that cannot survive such an arrangement should merge with a neighboring state or states.

Are you saying that every single person in Nigeria has to be interviewed before we can get meaningful data? The numbers they give are not absolutes but a representative figure of what the absolute number is. As long as they have an adequate sample size and the sample chosen is truly random, you can calculate the actual size in question.

Hello,I am currently schooling in France and doing some robotics courses too,Its quite some tasking but interesting stuff too.Is there anyways one could get involved. For me exposing kids even if its primary school to knowledge is useful and needful. It is never too early to introduce kids to structured kind of knowledge. But to be clear is it MIT organising it or just some students doing it on their own volition, resources and time, anyways,I hope they meet with every success for it is a good gesture and most laudable too
My guess is that the students are organizing it with some sort of material support from MIT. However, regardless of MIT's support, as long as the students can get access to the materials needed (laptops, hardware and software), then they're good to go!

I would think that they will probably just buy a few Mindstrom Lego Kits and just teach the kids how to program it. The kits are less than $300 a piece and it contains everything needed to program an entry level robot. It includes a 32-bit microprocessor, 3 server motors, 1 ultrasonic sensor, 2 touch sensors, a color sensor, needed drag-and-drop software, and building blocks.

I have thought of doing the same for a while now but I just don’t have the time!

I didn’t bother reading the 17 pages of posts and I’m sure some of the answers to my questions are buried somewhere. It would be helpful if the OP can be updated to include helpful info spread across the posts.

I think what TeHN is trying to do is very noble but I have some questions:

1. Who is TeHN?
2. What are your goals (mission)?
3. How much money are you planning to raise?
4. What type of people do you help and what kind of help do you provide?
5. What percentage of every Naira donated goes to your recipients?
6. Is TeHN a registered non-profit organization?

Lastly, how can money be sent from the US and/or Nigeria?
ProgrammingRe: Humour: Does This Realy Say's Truth Abt Programmers by Wallie(m): 4:13pm On Feb 13, 2012
I agree with @paulo882.

In the real world, ability to write codes is mostly a function of experience! Writing codes is a skill that can be developed regardless of what you studied in college. Software engineers, computer scientists, computer engineers, and electrical engineers can all write codes. What differs is the number of opportunities available to each college degree.

It is also true that programmers will also tend to earn the least amount of money because you can teach almost anybody to “turn a wench” - the barrier of entry is lower. There is no money in being in strictly being a programmer (implementing syntax).

Your pay is based on your responsibility and your responsibility might be limited by your education and experience. Software architects will typically earn the most amount of money because they are responsible for the entire software design.

I find most of the responses disheartening! If people like you, the young and educated, fail to realize the power of exposure, then I’m afraid for the future of Nigeria!

Do you guys understand that you’re mostly limited by what you’ve seen, done or heard? Would any of you understand what a cell phone can do without being shown or owning a cell phone? How about an SMS, app or the internet? There you are in the confines of your own home communicating across the 7 continents to “everybody” with an internet access and the address to this site!

Do you think that would have been possible without people’s imagination running wild after seeing some rudimentary thing about connecting two computers?

Exposing the young to technologies out there gives them a foundation to build their dreams on! Even a split second exposure to an event can forever change your life not to talk of 6 weeks!
HealthRe: Instead Of Oriental And 4points Hotel, Why Not An International Standard Hospital? by Wallie(m): 2:51pm On Feb 13, 2012
If you set up an international standard hospital, how is it going to be funded? What type of practice are we lacking? I would guess Specialty Practice.

General Practice - hospitals that provide diagnostic services (any teaching hospital, which we have plenty of, can provide this service)
Specialty Practice – for patients that have a specified medical condition
Rehabilitation – for disabled patients
Psychiatric – mental health

The truth is that it will be very hard for a modern practice with up-to-date medical equipments to stay in business past the first couple of years because there are not enough patients to pay for the services.

Most of the rich people traveling abroad to seek medical attention only do so when their condition requires more than their private doctors (general practitioners) in Nigeria can provide. At that point, they usually require a specialist to manage their condition.

According to the wiki link below, there are 57 medical specialties and a patient might need any one of them when ill.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Medical_specialties

Do you think that opening any one of the specialty hospitals can receive enough patronage to be financially solvent from a population that earns less than $2 a day?

My point is, unless medical insurance becomes ubiquitous at most businesses so that the sick can seek medical help and pay for the services rendered don’t expect any private investor to open a specialty hospital.

See Picture below.
+1 You're right!

When you said temperature sensor I thought you were refering to the one to check ambient air but I also didn't know that the engine had a seperate Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Either way, I was wrong/mixed up! I still have a lot to learn:-)

@Wylout: Be sure to invite me to come take a look after your modifications. grin grin grin

I guess you are confusing the thermostat with the temperature sensor
Hmmm, I don't think so. What do you mean "temperature sensor"? Are you referring to the temperature sensor for the outside (ambient) air? If yes, that provides a different function. I think that functions with the automatic climate control and the temperature that you see displayed on the dash. The sensor is probably somewhere around your front bumper.

The thermostat is what controls the temperature of the engine by letting the ECU know when to ask for more cooling or less cooling. When your engine is very cold, the thermostat tells the ECU to minimize the coolant going to the engine so that the engine can get up to ideal operating temperature but when the engine is too hot, the thermostat lets the ECU know to increase cooling to the engine.

If you just bypass the thermostat, you can simply just tell the ECU to always cool the engine or never cool the engine (add voltage to the wire connecting to the ECU or make it zero volts). People even connect a switch to the interior of the car to manually control cooling. I know this because that’s what you do in a racecar.

i seen people that claimed to have driven without thermostart for nearly ten years without any issue

is this really emm for real lol?

nl that has been driving without thermostart could u help out plz
I think it is possible especially if you have an older car. Think about what a thermostat does in a car. It lets the car know if the engine is running too hot or too cold based on which the ECU (computer) will take appropriate action. I would think that if you hardwire the cooling fan "always on" and your car does not have other issues that will cause it to overheat, you will be fine.

But the day your car overheats, the ECU won’t be able to protect the engine because it won’t know and your engine will just completely pafuka. :-)
RomanceRe: How Do You Get A Lady Fall In Love With You? by Wallie(m): 8:02pm On Feb 10, 2012
Is your goal to get her to fall in love with you just long enough to bed her or for her to fall in love with you for a long time?

The former is actually easier and all you have to do is to keep up appearances and be someone else, especially if your personality sucks. Just play pretend until you achieve your goal. If she likes kind guys, pretend to be kind and caring. If she's into money, pretend you're comfortable. grin

If you want her to fall in love with you after your first few nights together, you’re out of luck if she doesn’t like the true you because after a few months of dating, she will see your true personality and realize that she made a mistake.

Remember that when one starts dating, you’re merely meeting the person’s representative and it will take a few months to meet the actual person.

When your car is overheating and you need to keep driving, turn on the heater (full blast) to temporarily cool the engine. DO NOT TURN ON THE AC.
