PoliticsRe: Biafra Built Three Planes In 3 Years? by Wallie(m): 3:12pm On Nov 11, 2011
I think that the weapons used by the Biafran soldiers should be commended not because it was a technological marvel by any means but because of the ingenuity of making do with the very little parts available to them.

The Ogbunigwe is nothing more than a crude projectile but in the right hands it will wreck havoc, even if only psychological, on the military in most non-armored vehicle. But like it was suggested earlier, the person that shot it might lose a limb due to back-firing.
CareerRe: Does Your First Job Affect Your Career? by Wallie(m): 4:19pm On Nov 10, 2011
More likely than not because you’re more likely to get a subsequent job based on your current experience. If I’m an employer looking for an accountant, I’m most likely going to hire someone that can do the job and one of the ways of knowing what a person can do is by looking at their experience. Even if I was willing to hire a recent graduate, why would I hire someone with an engineering experience that studied accounting 3 years ago when I can find a recent accounting graduate?

To switch to a new job that is not entry level, your prior experience or your current knowledge must be applicable to the new job unless you get lucky. You can demonstrate your current knowledge by going back to school or obtaining certifications.
Car TalkRe: What's The Fastest Speed You've Experienced In A Car? by Wallie(m): 10:18pm On Nov 09, 2011
Siena:
Wallie, I agree with you - to a point.  A lightweight, aerodynamic car will be less affected by crosswinds at speed, than a heavy, boxy one. This is also why the Lotus Elise has tremendous downforce, courtesy of it's rear spoiler and front splitter. It also sits closer to the tarmac, with the underside pretty much covered. With its small frontal and side area, it will cut through the wind, helped by its wedge-shaped profile.

A big, heavy car with a boxy shape will definitely be affected by crosswinds, and will become unstable at speed, even on a good day. The same goes for trucks - they are way heavier than cars, but at 90 mph will feel far from stable, and are more affected by crosswinds. Large frontal / side section = greater wind resistance, which increases the faster one travels.

But it's all good, we're all learning a thing or two here.  wink
The same down-force that keeps a car like an Exige or Viper ACR planted also inhibits it from doing well in high speed runs. The wing actually acts as drag. Redirecting the energy of the airflow to hold a car down creates more resistance for the car to push against. When turning, you want as much wing as possible so that you can carry more speed in the turns but when going straight, you don't want anymore wing than is required to add some weight to the rear tires. This is the reason racecar drivers will try to strike a balance depending on the track they are on.

With regards to boxy shape, you are right and my comments were directed to a modern day sedan and not a truck. To simplify, let's say a car with drag coefficient 0.35 or better.

I will own an Exige S260 in the near future, God willing!

Speaking for Caterhams, I once played with the idea of building a Lotus Seven kit car with a Miata engine.

Ikenna351:
Siena, you got it wrong. If you read the post properly, you would understand that i wasnt emphasing on the speed, but a matching car for a high speed.

Like i noted in the earlier post, a KIA Picanto can speed upto 170kph. Yes, likewise Toyota Yaris. But are you now telling me that the body or size of such cars match such speeds? You think they can handle it? So just because a car instrument cluster shows 240 km/h,  means that its safe to speed the car in question at such speed and still manuaever eventualities at such speeds?

Ikenna.
Siena:
If you're referring to the size of the body shell, then again, you're not on point. A smaller shell with a decent power-to-weight ratio will out handle a big heavy car. I attend track days, and the cars that out handle the opposition are the small lightweights. An example is a Caterham 7 or a Lotus Elise. The Lotus Elise ('96-'01) makes a measly 118 bhp from its 1,8 I4 engine. This will out-accelerate a Bentley Turbo R, and out-handle it too. So, would you still say a big, heavy car is favourable for good handling? We've dropped balls-out power now, and engine configuration. I have been out-smarted on the track by a Caterham 7, with 110 bhp, with me in a heavily-worked Audi S4, with trick suspension and 412 bhp.

And you're getting things mixed up bro. At no point did I state the maximum speed of any car, based on what's on the speedo dials. I've gone by the manufacturer's figures, which have very little to do with the speedo dials. Most cars will have the dials calibrated in excess of the car's actual maximum, so the dials are a moot point.
If I may both of you are correct. The answer really depends. If you want the most stable car on the highway, the car needs to have a little bit of meat on it. You really don't want a paper weight like an Elise or Caterham when going triple digit speeds as they're adversely affected by wind and little undulations on the road.

On a tight track (track with very short straight ways and a lot of turns), you want a light weight small car or what some people refer to as a momentum car because it lacks power to accelerate quickly but it makes up for it by being able to carry more speed around a turn. On some tracks, a Lotus Elise or Exige will be faster than a Ferrari 458 (slight exaggeration but not far from the truth).

The most important things for you to have on a high speed run are good tires and suspension. You don’t want your car bouncing off the road when you hit a bump at high speed nor do you want a blow-out at triple digit speeds.

Siena:
Bro, I don't doubt what your speedo indicated. All I'm stating is, from a technical viewpoint, the Renault Scenic 2,0 dCi with 147 bhp won't get anywhere close to 160 mph. Renault quote a maximum of 127 mph for manual gearbox, and 123 mph for auto.

The big, boxy shape of the Renault Scenic won't permit such a top end, and if the engine made 300 bhp, with the current transmission, you'll still be looking at the 144 mph mark.
I think that people underestimate the amount of power needed to overcome aerodynamic drag.

To overcome air drag at 150 mph for a car with coefficient of friction (cd) 0.30 (like a Corvette), you need 145hp. Then you need more horsepower for rolling resistance of the tires and overcoming internal friction of the engine.

Even with the right horsepower, you still have to overcome the limitation of the gear ratio.

BusinessRe: How China Creates Jobs, A Lesson For Nigeria by Wallie(m): 4:28pm On Nov 09, 2011
The post only tells half of the story. The other half includes an economy that manufactures for the rest of the world. The only reason that they’re trying to create domestic demand is because they need someone to keep the consumption of manufactured goods going because of dwindling demands in Europe and America.

Nigeria does not manufacture anything, at least, at the international stage. The only stimulus that the government needs to engage in is in the manufacturing sector. If our manufacturing companies manufacture enough to have a trade surplus on average with the rest of the world, Europe better watch out!

Going abroad does not guarantee you a better future oh. Lots of Nigerians abroad living in disgraceful conditions but hiding it from their folks back home. The only guarantee you get by going abroad is relative security, 24hr electricity and good infrastructure but you'll pay through your nose for it after paying ~35% of your income in taxes. Going abroad only makes sense for Nigerians living in poverty. Don't make the foolish mistake of leaving a good job to face a shaky future abroad. So many Nigerians are shedding bitter tears abroad but can't come back because of shame.
I agree with most of what you said except the highlighted. You seemed so sure of your opinion that you stated it in absolute terms. Almost all the Nigerians that I know that are doing well are from a middle class and above family in Nigeria.

However, you are right that living abroad is not easy especially for foreigners. You have to realize that the deck is stacked against you because you have a foreign degree from a school most have never heard of, and you speak with an accent that people can barely understand. About the only way to succeed is to excel enough to stand out from people deemed “normal.”

Car TalkRe: How Often Should D Fuel Filter In A Tokunbo Car Be Changed? by Wallie(m): 3:53pm On Nov 09, 2011
Siena:
As per manufacturer's recommendations.

If using poor quality fuel, you may wish to replace the fuel filter every other service.
It all depends on the operating environment and the quality of the oil, fuel, and air. Oil filter, cabin filter, and fuel filter all seek to remove particles from whatever is running through them. The greater the amount of filtered particles, the earlier you need to change the filter.

If your fuel is very clean, then you might go as high as the manufacturer’s recommended change interval before changing it.

In my prior life, I wrote some codes for sensors that capture gigabytes per second of real life data into a real-time VxWorks environment. The embedded code then processes the data before forwarding it into a Matlab environment on a PC for signal processing.

I wrote the following set of codes over the span of about 2 years:
[li]Embedded code in the VxWorks using C/C++ that has to respond to milliseconds interrupts. [/li]
[li]The interface code that connects the Dy4 board to the PC through a fiber optic card. The code was also written in C++. To debug, I occasionally connect a Logic Analyzer in between. I used to know every word in the fiber optic protocol like the back of my hand.[/li]
[li]The code inside the PC that performs signal processing on the data. The code was written in MATLAB wrapped in C.[/li]
I used to live and breathe MATLAB! I could do things that MATLAB employees think were impossible. Fun times!

Try my thread Nigerian history:

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-693700.0.html
But there's nothing more captivating than a well written documentary or even a movie adopted from real life events. Think about how the movie Blood Diamond showed the world how diamonds are tainted with blood of innocent children. This way, the director has the opportunity to tell the story from someone's perspective. I still remember watching Things Fall Apart as a kid.

The truth is that if we don't tell our stories to understand our past, it will be very hard to have a future. People go to war, whether rightly or wrongly, because they feel aggrieved and the issues won’t be settled until "we" see through the eyes of the aggrieved person.

I really think that MASSOB should fund a $10 million+ well written documentary or movie by a well respected director. I think that the director should be a foreigner so that the film will have a balanced view. Your thread could serve as a starting point to research the movie.

I also thing the same should be done for the Niger Delta region.
CrimeRe: History Lessons: Some Unseen Videos Of The Biafran War by Wallie(m): 2:02pm On Nov 03, 2011
War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

I think a movie or documentary, with no expense spared, chronicling historical facts of that era should be made. But the Nollywood producers and financiers are too busy with movies with no depth!
Car TalkRe: The Implications Of Buying A Vehicle With High Odometer Reading? by Wallie(m): 9:57pm On Nov 02, 2011
The OP probably wants a late model car but doesn't want to pay late model price, which means that you have to buy high mileage or salvage.

The most important thing that you can ask for when buying any used car is the service records. From the service records, you can tell if the owner took take of his car or if the car makes too many frequent trips to the dealer for one problem or another. You can also tell if the owner performs the regularly scheduled maintenance on time.

For salvage cars that crashed, take it to a good body shop to see how well the damages were fixed. If you're lucky, there are some salvage cars that had other types of damages like recovered theft - stripping, hail - little dents, flood-minor or major, vandalism, and repossessions.

For most cars, parts that wear are designed to be replaced after about 100k miles. So you should budget for things like water pump, thermostat, alternator, timing belts if not chain, control arms, brakes, battery, and spark plugs. Skip the things that were done in the last 20k miles or so (another reason why you need service records).

Take a look at the site below to bid or get someone to bid on a car you like. You can even get the car shipped to you and I'm sure quite a few Nigerians use the site.
Your 75/25 % scale sounds like a realistic idea in this system of economy. In that connection, short term credit facility would assist major players in the economy like banks to carry on with business of giving credit to significant investments and projects. However, it should be limited to that. If you read my initial post correctly, I used the word "loophole". It is believed that it was taken advantage of by those at the helm of affairs, and that eventually led to the crash.

If there wasn't a flaw in the basic credit scheme that shook western economies, why was there a freeze in credit flow? Why did the US gov had to print/borrow and pump money for banks to confidently start lending again?

I agree with you about applying wisdom, principles and education. Despite that, a lot of educated people were still screwed. Even many economists couldn't predict it. I think and many in the US still believe that there was a massive fraud that took place. Which is one of the reasons the issue of regulation took center stage afterward.

I am not an expert. In essence, it would be better to continue to do things our own way and not to wholly emulate or incorporate the credit system of the west.  As afam4eva and others stated "Everyone should cut their coat according to their sizes" - especially the common man.
Because no one could tell which banks were over-exposed to the toxic assets and by how much. Credit takes discipline and you're right by saying everyone should live within/below their means.
BusinessRe: Cash Vs Credit Based Economy? by Wallie(m): 8:54pm On Nov 02, 2011
Also, the global economy cannot work without the credit system.

How do you think banks transact with each other? When you deposit a GTB check into a First bank account, do you think money is immediately transferred? Written checks are nothing but promissory notes to pay the bearer. Ask people importing goods and they will tell you about Letter of Credit requested by the seller.

Among other things, the credit system was devised as a way of allowing people deemed creditworthy to transact commerce away from home without having to carry the required money on them. In the olden days before IOUs, pirates simply waited for commerce ships and robbed the business people of all their money. Kinda similar to the thieves that wait along the route to the East to rob luxurious buses during Xmas.

The bottom line is, too much of anything is bad!
