Programming / Re: Is Excel Vba Popular In Your Country by WarHorse1(m): 3:21pm On Jul 28, 2011
Sorry this is really late. But just if this gets to you, then I think you stand to benefit.

To be good with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), you need the following:

1. Be good with Excel Functions; at least 40 different Excel functions ( See the function library in Excel 2007)

2. Recording macros have a trick that can help you do more with just recording macros. I just hope you know it.

3. Recording macros on the long run will limit your abilities to take on data challenges. You need to learn how to write VBA. See this site for a start.

http://www.functionx.com/vbaexcel/index.htm

use the table of content to go step by step

4. Yes, it can be difficult but VBA is becoming indispensable for Financial Accounting, Financial Model, inventory management, data tracking so so and so. That should give you the courage to always go back to start from where you stopped. Its like knock knock knock and it shall be opened for you. That was exactly my experience. Currently I work with VBA- developing data tracking systems in Excel and get a pay pack that makes me so surprised that I get paid this much for my passion.

Career / Re: Why Does It Take Some Companies So Long To Pay Their Worker? by WarHorse1(m): 3:35pm On Aug 27, 2010
The following are my reasons:

1. Lack of Knowledge of Business Management
Nigerian private business peoples assume they know what it take to run a business. The becomae the CEO, accountant and cash manager at the same time. There are no checks on the running of the business. The are poor on sensitivity analysis and so cannot understand the direction of the business. The business plan stops when they acquired loans from the bank. That my definition of gross mismanagement

2. Lack of Creativiity
Almost everybody claims to be creative. A big lie. Nigerian companies feel creativity stops at coming up with a business idea and starting it up. Sorry! All along in the implimentation, growth, stability, maturity and even death stages of a business, creativity is needed. We are poor creators of business strategy all along the way of business operations. This has a big and negative implication on cash flow and payment of salaries.

3. Mindset of "The Boss"
Can you believe that Bill gates is not the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft? Bill used to be but he later stepped down from the position for someone better that he is in the job of CEO - Steve Ballmer(or something like that). Nigerian business men? Almost never. they want to be Chairman, CEO even after death. bad business oooooooooooooo. Business is driven by varied functions. you must use the right person for the right job. That leads to the fourth reason -

4. Leadership
I laugh a lot when I see and hear the many programs of leadership that go on in Nigeria and the many person that go with the notion that leaders are made or can be made. my dear all, as controversial as this issues, I wish to state and re-state that a true leaders thatcan lead human organizations with a strong sense of the combination of goal, human nature and fame can never be made. He/she must have to be born with the bio-inherent tendencies to lead these functions. it has to be someone who prizes fame much more than money. American leadership is based on fame and not money. look at the rich entrepreneurs of America, Japan, and Europe - even when the money comes, they give it away.
We need persons who will practice shephard leadership-source for human resources, find and exploit their potential while leading them to greener pastures as and at when due. unfortunately, Nigeria has few if at all any of such. Even if they exist, there are "trample upon". Shhhhhhhhhhhhh. never say the beautiful onse are not yet born; they have been born but were trampled opon and are still been trampled opon. The propaganda itself that a business leader can be nurtured tramples of the truism that business leaders, as long as they will lead people and their initiatives, are actually natured - Born in other words.

5. In Our Character
Nigeria is a class society. Most previlleged people want to remain the previlleged and do not want others to become previlleged. Most private company owners feel bad paying money to workers even when the workers has worked for it. They feel they are enriching others rather than themselves. They pride themselves with the balance money in their account or business account and any reduction in that money hurts them.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Many Of The People I Meet Are Looking For Jobs by WarHorse1(m): 9:26am On Aug 13, 2010
The problem is not that there are no jobs. complex as it may seem, the problem is within us as individuals. The problems could be itemized

1. Most of us have nothing to offer should a job be place before us. Its partly not our fault. The Uninversity gives us outdated knowledge that finds no expresion in our morden work organizations. e.g A computer Science graduate who depends solely on what he got in the university will have nothing to offer today.

2. We do not develop ourselves. Most of us lack a reading culture. The knowledge that delivers today is within books and the internet. but how many of us care to read and exploit the knowledge within?

3. The love of money. Ask most of us why we want to work, the primary reson is that we want money. Thats the response of one who has nothing to offer. The love to deliver should be the your first reason. Money will always come after it.

4. How many of us have something we know we are best at doing? The majority of us cannot point out two or more things that we can do very well. Our expectation is that we will be employed and then trained on what to do. Sorry, these days, companies do not have money to do much training. They need experienced hands. (I know what you want to ask - "where do we get the experience if no opportunity to work?"wink see next item.

5. How many of us will work for free just to get an acknowledgement of experience? Well, thats how some have got their jobs. Let as many people know what you can do even if it means you do these things free. I personally benefited from this means. It was an advise given me by an American proffessor at Harvard Business school via the internet. My current job which pays me over 200k linked to me by someone I taught free of charge. So do as much so that people can know what you are best at doing - action speaks lauder than CVs. Start today, put proposals to companies that you want to do somethings you know how to do best for little of free and see the network you will grow. then wait for the network to yield. Its about finding a job by doing a job.

There are more but i will find time to spill it out
Business / Re: Breakevn Time In A New Business by WarHorse1(m): 5:01pm On Aug 06, 2010
Breakeven point in a business is that point where Total Cost equals Total Revenue. There is no fixed time this point is reached in a business. It could be on the short run (within or at the close of a year) or on the longrun ( over a year).

Simply put, if I invest 1million and after sales, I get back 1million in revenue, I have roken even.
Science/Technology / Re: Information Technology In Nigeria by WarHorse1(m): 3:32pm On Jul 31, 2010
In Nigeria, information technology is still at a low ebb. It is shocking that we are yet to exploit the full technologies available is simple desktop computing and networking.

One glaring problem is in the IT culture that is developing. Much of Nigerian information technology is all about re-inventing the wheel. The pase at which information technology is growing in the foreign world will keep setting Nigeria behind. Certainly, catching up with the rest of the world is a fluke.

We should start asking ourselves, what can we use already-made softwares or off-the-shelf softwares to do? We should start exploiting freewares and open-source software in or work organizations. We should exploit these to speed up business development in Nigeria. In other words, we should exploit end user information technology and perfect it.

If we do not do this, we will remain in the catch-me-if-you-can game that the technologies of the west is putting before us.

Career / Re: Mistakes At Work by WarHorse1(m): 4:58pm On Jun 30, 2010
Ask yourself these questions:

1. Why did the mistake happen?

2. What oversight may have caused it?

3. Do I repeat the same mistakes?

4. What can I do to avoid the mistakes associated with my work?

I work with spreadsheets and have made some costly mistakes in the past. Let me share my mistake antidote -

a. Have a pencil and a plain sheet of paper before you always
b. On the plain sheet, always write a step by step process of what you need to do to do the job on hand.
c. keep a check list of your recurrent jobs such as payrolls or similar. Tick items on the check list while you check your work. Update your check list so as not to repeat errors.
d.If your job is quantitative, have some parameters for checking results. Maximum and minimum values can be used to check the changes of errors.
e. If you use Microsoft Excel, get used to error checking and fomular tracking.

These are a summary of my mistake antidotes. Find time to read the site below

Welcome to reality!

Have you asked yourself how many companys use oracle in Nigeria?

Have you asked how many persons are needed to man oracle database within an organization?

Have you asked why companies are not using oracle, giving its advantages?

My guy, if you can find answers to the above, you will understand why it could be difficult to find a place to practice.

My findings are:

Too few companies use oracle. why, cost of implimentation and maintainance is high. Also, there a afordable alternatives. You need very few persons to man oracle implimentation in an organization. supply is greater than demand. Also, some companies are not comfortable leaving their crucial data to some "Oraclist" to handle the way they thinks is right. They prefer to stay will the old (in their mind sets), reliables.

Once againg, welcome to reality.

2. Much will depend on the courage and wits of Nigerian keeper

The poor performance of Greece cannot help us rate the defence of the SK.

Milk Rice

Ingredients

* 2 cups short-grain rice (like Arborio)
* 6 cups water
* 4 1/4 cups milk
* 1 pinch salt
* 1/2 vanilla bean

Directions

1.Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan. Wash the rice and drain it. Add the rice to the boiling water, and cook for 5 minutes.

2. In a separate saucepan, bring the milk to a boil over medium heat.

3.Remove the cooked rice and drain it. Slowly drop the rice into the boiling milk. Lower the heat and add salt, vanilla bean, and sugar. Cover and simmer 15 - 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the milk is absorbed. Add more milk, if necessary for a tender rice.

4. Serve warm, cold or room temperature - your preference.

Thanks for the menu. I wish you were there for me then. Once again, thanks Pokerface - True African Woman
Career / Re: The Problem With Nigeria`s Banking Sector? by WarHorse1(m): 6:21am On Jun 09, 2010
The central Bank has not helped matter with their high bank lending rates. Still the banks should redefine their "Theory of Business" to handle current situations with a view to surviving the depression. Happy bank workers can do more. There is no use having so many unsatisfied workers in the banking sector.

Its high time for banks to diversify. Since banks hold money and are scared to grant loans to public individuals for fear that the loans will not be invested responsibly, they should start investing in their own though out businesses so as to generate more revenue and meaningfully engage human resources.
Career / Re: The Problem With Nigeria`s Banking Sector? by WarHorse1(m): 5:41pm On Jun 08, 2010
Bad Managers - That is the reason

This is what happens when capitalist without a good knowledge of information technology and without a good knowledge of the Nigerian Economy manage the banking sector.

Let me take information technology. Our banking sector manage information technology for information technology sake. They do not ask - what will this do to improve our return on investment. Therefore, so much money go for unnecessary info-tech. This comes along with a huge maintenance cost.

I give an example. Every Paying Cashier have a pc to

1. Check if available balance is sufficient
2. Process withdrawal to arrive at a balance after withdrawal
3. Do necessary signings
4. Count the money and pay it.

You only need one persons to do 1 - 3 with a computer and two or more to do item 4. That would have saves the purchase of additional computers. The money could have been used for investment purposes.

Secondly, the bank has staff who are very poor with Microsoft office capabilities. I tell you, this is one of the major reasons why too much time is spend after work on correlatings and corroboratings. They are poor with simple excel. Much would have been automated from their desks. Salaries would have been better if overtime pays were added to normal working time pays while much is done for less time.

As regards the economy, Banks are not helping the real economy with loans to develop. Those who get loans are those who have the powers to withhold payment irrespective of the consequence. The ongoing staff reduction in the banking sector had been fired by unpaid loans and therefore, layoffs to recoup some credit from within. More money would have been made by properly managing loans for investments and generating enough returns to step-up the salaries of bank workers. The banks need to develop a working model of this country and based on that, structure their strategies. Current strategies are out of sync with the real economy of Nigeria.

There is a psychological reason also. Bank workers have no creative and innovative work to do. Its monotonous -

1.Receive money,
2.Pay out,
3.check for balances,
4.attend to angry bank workers,
5.leave in fear of been laid-off

Almost nothing to use their heads for. This kind of job kills morale.

Again, greedy Bank Directors. They get much for working for less and the system works everyday. Why should they improve the lot of their workers?
Food / Re: Mention Your Cooking Disasters Here by WarHorse1(m): 4:37pm On Jun 08, 2010
I came to visit my mom. I then went into the kitchen to cook rice as that was what I wanted. I was cooking rice. It was time to add salt to give it that sweet salt taste as many do like it.

I looked around and saw a bottle of white substance that could have been salt. I poured some and tasted it. It was not salty. So I wondered if this kind of salt requires more to catch. I added more again. I realized too late that it was granulated sugar. I then asked for salt but it did not repair it. I tried to eat it but ended up with a running stomach - It was irritatingly sweet.

Till date, I taste the salt b4 use.
