its not so much about the sacrifice as how you feel about the person, you would/will do anything for your children and if you are a good parent you won't expect anything in return. If you do something for someone you truly love ,do of for that love, not for some future reason as yet unknown. if you help a person and then they let you down it is curse on them and you can walk away with your head held high.

ToyM28- yeah that is most definitely feminism, you are (like it or not) a feminist. let me embrace you my feminist sister

the definition i gave would be recognized and accepted by any sociologist if you wrote me an essay with this as the basis of you argument you would be my star pupil,

However if anyone wrote, to quote you- "But the truth is that not all feminism is like that, there are some who ve been reported in the papers 2 hold some kind of demonstration saying DOWN 2 MEN, WOMEN SHLD BE D ONLY ONES IN POLITICS, YEEE 2 POLITICAL LESBAINISM!"  they would be rewriting it as they clearly do not understand the feminist perspective.

so ToyM28 stop worrying about the few militant feminists that the media love to report and embrace the feminist in you.

As Nia said if i were not for the feminists of yesteryear you would not be taking part in the discussion today.

why does anyone have to get married?

women have more choices now and i do not believe all women need a man to be happy and visa versa

when a woman can earn enough to keep herself perhaps she feels no need to marry and that is perhaps why some successful woman do not marry.

and can no one on this forum have a discussion without using the bible? that drives me mad

Good question Seun, i teach sociology and always start the gender issue with the question 'are you a feminist?' to which usually half the girls say yes and almost all the boys say no.

I then give them this description of what it is to be a feminist;

1. The belief that women and men are, and have been, treated
differently by our society, and that women have frequently
and systematically been unable to participate fully in all
social arenas and institutions.

2. A desire to change that situation.

3. That this gives a "new" point-of-view on society, when
eliminating old assumptions about why things are the way
they are, and looking at it from the perspective that women
are not inferior and men are not "the norm."


I then ask them again and most (male and female) now declare themselves feminism, as a perspective feminism (true feminism) does no preach that women are better or more equal than men. all feminism is , is the belief that men and women are as important as each other. that is the simplest way to understand it.

anyone that thinks it is a more militant thing simply misunderstands, and Dr J will be more than willing to give them a lesson.

i have just looked on the united nations web site ,it say the average for women is 23 and for men 27 in Nigeria.

when you find the person you want to marry that is the right age , i got married at 24 and widowed at 29 life is for living if you find someone special do not waste time on insignificant matters like age

i do not think you are being picky enough, but as a professor perhaps i am a little biased in this argument.

i would feel sorry for any man that was stupid enough to lift his hand to me , my daddy, my brothers and my cousins would put him in hospital no questions asked.  My dad is Irish and this is what his family would expect him to do ,its the done thing always has been. as a result i personal know no member of my family (and its a big family) to have ever been beaten by a partner or spouse.

if any man here ever dates a Irish or Scottish girl they would do well to remember this, the girl doesn't have to report it to her dad the suspicion is enough.

in days gone by it used to be that before a boy could marry a girl there (Scotland / Ireland) he would be beaten by her family as a right of passage or perhaps a warning.

this is a really sad question there are plenty of chances for women

work hard go to university and you will never have to make such a demeaning choice.

spikecylinder i find this so interesting i grew up in the UK and it is not common practice here at all ,if a boy is circumcised it is very unusual. and if you told your friends your man was circumcised they would all want to know about it as most of them will never have seen one 'done' before.

Most people in the UK would see it as a Jewish custom not a Christian one.

i think you maybe chasing the wrong type of woman. no woman should expect a guy to pay her phone bill or anything else for that matter.

speaking as a graduate that is most certainly not a virgin, i think the gentlemans problem may well be getting a graduate to date someone with such old fashioned ideas. i mean would you really say "are you a Graduate, are you a virgin?" perhaps the ladies you ask are virgins but do not want to date someone so narrowminded?

i hope at least that you are a graduate virgin?
