Menstrual cramps are sharp pains in a woman's lower abdomen that occur when her menstrual period begins and may continue for two to three days. Symptoms can range in severity from a mild annoyance to severe pain that interferes with normal activities. Menstrual cramps are the leading cause of absenteeism in women younger than 30. Although over half of women who have menstrual periods experience some discomfort, 10% are temporarily disabled by symptoms. The following circumstances may make a woman more likely to experience menstrual cramps: She started her first period at an early age (younger than 11 years). Her menstrual periods are heavy. She is overweight or obese. She smokes cigarettes or uses alcohol. She has never been pregnant. Causes of Menstrual Pain Prostaglandins are chemicals a woman's body produces that cause many of the symptoms associated with menstrual discomfort. The tissue that lines the uterus makes these chemicals. Prostaglandins stimulate the uterine muscles to contract. Women who have high levels of prostaglandin may experience more intense contractions of their uterus and more pain. Prostaglandins may also be responsible for vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches that accompany painful periods Other menstrual-type cramps can be caused by conditions of the reproductive tract, such as the following: Endometriosis -- uterine tissue that appears outside the uterus. Fibroids and adenomyosis -- noncancerous (benign) growths in the uterus Infections in the reproductive organs Abnormal pregnancy, such as an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy in the tubes, outside the uterus)IUD (intra-uterine device) used for birth control Ovarian cyst narrow cervix If a woman has had menstrual pain ever since her periods started, the condition is classified as primary dysmenorrhea. If a physical condition such as pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis has developed and is causing the pain, this is called secondary dysmenorrhea. Once the medical condition is treated, the menstrual pain usually goes away. Symptoms of Menstrual Pain In addition to cramps in the lower abdomen, a woman may also experience some of these symptoms with menstrual cramps: Lower back pain Leg pain, radiating down the legs Nausea Vomiting Diarrhea Headaches Irritability Weakness Fainting spells (in extreme cases) When to Seek Medical Care Most women have significant improvement with home care. However, a woman should call her health care provider in these situations: Menstrual cramps continue to be painful for longer than usual. The pain is suddenly worse or different from what she may have experienced before.Bleeding is excessive, requiring more than one pad or tampon per hour.Signs of infection, such as fever, chills, and body aches, are present at the time of the period.Menstrual cramps began in a woman older than 25 years. The woman suspects she may be pregnant and any of these symptoms occur. The woman's doctor can help her manage most symptoms. However, she should go to a hospital's emergency department if any of the following problem s occur: She faints. She experiences repeated dizziness when standing up.A sudden, intense pelvic pain causes her to double over.Tissue is passed in the menstrual flow. Tissue often appears silvery or grayish. She thinks she might be pregnant and has menstrual-type pain. Medications for Menstrual Pain The best way to relieve painful menstrual cramps is to take an anti-inflammatory medication. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), and ketoprofen (Orudis) are available without a prescription and are effective at blocking the effects of prostaglandins. These drugs work better if taken before the start of menstruation and can be continued as long as needed. If one type does not relieve the pain, try another, because these medications do not work the same in everyone.Anti-inflammatory drugs like this can be harsh on the stomach. If there is a history of kidney problems or stomach problems (such as ulcers or reflux), consult with your health care provider before starting this type of medication. Taking the pills with meals may help prevent upset stomach.Starting some form of hormonal birth control is another option to control or stop menstrual cramps. This can be a pill, an injection, a transdermal patch, or a hormone-containing IUD. These methods can reduce or eliminate the menstrual flow leading to less pain. Menstrual Pain Home Remedies If anti-inflammatory medicine is not an option or if additional relief is needed, the following strategies may help relieve menstrual cramps: A heating pad to the pelvic area massage to the back and lower abdomen exercise, especially prior to the start of a period thiamine (100 mg daily)Low-fat vegetarian diet calcium (1,200 mg daily) Preventing Menstrual Pain Prevent painful menstrual cramps with these techniques: Keep a normal body weight. Don't smoke.Don't drink too much alcohol.Exercise regularly. Outlook for Menstrual Pain Often, it is possible to eliminate menstrual cramps effectively. Anti-inflammatory drugs are 80% effective. Hormonal birth control decreases the pain 90% of the time. Cramps also tend to decrease in intensity as a woman ages. Cramps may disappear after a woman's first pregnancy. |

DonaldGenes:I think what he was trying to say is that the important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. |
Here are 25 life lessons from Albert Einstein: 1. Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death. 2. Everyone should be respected as an individual, but no one idolized. 3. Never do anything against conscience even if the state demands it. 4. If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. 5. A perfection of means, and confusion of aims, seems to be our main problem. 6. Love is a better teacher than duty. 7. If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough. 8. No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. 9. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. 10. Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. 11. It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. 12. Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted. 13. Force always attracts men of low morality. 14. Everything should be as simple as it is, but not simpler. 15. A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be. 16. “If only…” These two words paired together create one of the saddest phrases in the English language. Here are ten choices that ultimately lead to this phrase of regret, and how to elude them: 1. Wearing a mask to impress others. – If the face you always show the world is a mask, someday there will be nothing beneath it. Because when you spend too much time concentrating on everyone else’s perception of you, or who everyone else wants you to be, you eventually forget who you really are. So don’t fear the judgments of others; you know in your heart who you are and what’s true to you. You don’t have to be perfect to impress and inspire people. Let them be impressed and inspired by how you deal with your imperfections. 2. Letting someone else create your dreams for you. – The greatest challenge in life is discovering who you are; the second greatest is being happy with what you find. A big part of this is your decision to stay true toyour own goals and dreams. Do you have people who disagree with you? Good. It means you’re standing your ground and walking your own path. Sometimes you’ll do things considered crazy by others, but when you catch yourself excitedly losing track of time, that’s when you’ll know you’re doing the right thing. Read The 4-Hour Workweek . 3. Keeping negative company. – Don’t let someone who has a bad attitude give it to you. Don’t let them get to you. They can’t pull the trigger if you don’t hand them the gun. When you remember that keeping the company of negative people is a choice, instead of an obligation, you free yourself to keep the company of compassion instead of anger, generosity instead of greed, and patience instead of anxiety. 4. Being selfish and egotistical. – A life filled with loving deeds and good character is the best tombstone. Those who you inspired and shared your love with will remember how you made them feel long after your time has expired. So carve your name on hearts , not stone. What you have done for yourself alone dies with you; what you have done for others and the world remains. 5. Avoiding change and growth. – If you want to know your past look into your present conditions. If you want to know your future look into your present actions. You must let go of the old to make way for the new; the old way is gone, never to come back. If you acknowledge this right now and take steps to address it, you will position yourself for lasting success. Read The Power of Habit . 6. Giving up when the going gets tough. – There are no failures, just results. Even if things don’t unfold the way you had expected, don’t be disheartened or give up. Learn what you can and move on. The one who continues to advance one step at a time will win in the end. Because the battle is always won far away and long before the final victory. It’s a process that occurs with small steps, decisions, and actions that gradually build upon each other and eventually lead to that glorious moment of triumph. 7. Trying to micromanage every little thing. – Life should be touched, not strangled. Sometimes you’ve got to relax and let life happen without incessant worry and micromanagement. Learn to let go a little before you squeeze too tight. Take a deep breath. When the dust settles and you can once again see the forest for the trees, take the next step forward. You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going to be headed somewhere great. Everything in life is in perfect order whether you understand it yet or not. It just takes some time to connect all the dots. 8. Settling for less than you deserve. – Be strong enough to let go and wise enough to wait for what you deserve. Sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you have ever been to stand up taller than you ever were before. Sometimes your eyes need to be washed by your tears so you can see the possibilities in front of you with a clearer vision again. Don’t settle. 9. Endlessly waiting until tomorrow. – The trouble is, you always think you have more time than you do. But one day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to work on the things you’ve always wanted to do. And at that point you either will have achieved the goals you set for yourself, or you will have a list of excuses for why you haven’t. Read The Last Lecture . 10. Being lazy and wishy-washy. – The world doesn’t owe you anything, you owe the world something. So stop daydreaming and start DOING. Develop a backbone, not a wishbone. Take full responsibility for your life – take control. You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sit around and wait for somebody to do something someday. Someday is now; the somebody the world needs is YOU . |

Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day of last year Eurosport reports. The Olympic and Paralympic runner was convicted of culpable homicide last month for shooting dead 29-year-old law graduate and model Reeva Steenkamp at his home in Pretoria. Judge Thokozile Masipa – only the second black woman to rise to the bench – stressed the difficulty of arriving at a decision that was “fair and just to society and to the accused”, but ordered that Pistorius serve a maximum of five years for the crime. His only reaction was to wipe his eyes before two police officers led him down to the holding cells beneath the High Court in the heart of the South African capital. Ninety minutes later, an armoured police vehicle carrying Pistorius – still dressed in dark suit, white shirt and black tie – left the building through a throng of reporters towards Pretoria Central Prison, where he is expected to serve his time. Once the execution site for opponents of South Africa’s former white-minority government, the jail is now home to the country’s most hardened criminals, including the man known as “Prime Evil”, apartheid death squad leader Eugene de Kock. Prisons officials said Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated when he was a baby, would be housed in a separate and secure hospital wing of the massive complex. His family remained calm throughout the sentencing. Pistorius was also sentenced to three years for unlawful discharge of a firearm in a restaurant, with that portion of the sentence suspended for five years. After the proceedings, one of Pistorius’s legal team, Roxanne Adams, told Sky News that Pistorius will serve just a sixth of his sentence in prison – a mere 10 months – before serving the rest of his sentence under house arrest. “Justice was served,” said the Steenkamp family lawyer, Dup de Bruyn, adding that it was “the right sentence” – but the victim’s mother put things in a different light. “There is no closure without Reeva, unless you can magic her back,” said June Steenkanp. |

Starboy, Wizkid, has really been bashed like a kid by some of his colleagues in recent times. In less than two weeks, two of the people he has worked with seem not to be happy with him. He was still smarting from Samklef, his former producer’s bashing when singer, Saeon, dissed him again on social media. The singer indirectly said that Wizzy didn’t help in promoting the song in which she featured him even though he got N1.5m from her. But explaining his side of the story, Wizkid said he was not aware that she was bitter against him. He stated that he did not want to do the collaboration but Saeon was on his neck and willing to pay him and so he agreed. “I think I tried in the case of Saeon. I gave her a hit song and it was my boy that produced it. I did my part of the job to record the song and I was also in the video. I don’t charge N1.5m for collaboration, I charge as much as N10m and that is not a lie. If I did it for her for that price it was out of love. I did not even want to do it for her because I was busy. I will not lie; I did not want to do it. I don’t charge the people I love for collaboration but when they get on my neck and they wouldn’t mind paying to make the song, then I would agree. If I had declined, they would say I am a terrible person. I am just trying to be a good guy,” he said. Wizzy also commented on the rift with Samklef, who said in a recent interview, that he regrets working with the Pakuromo crooner. “Everyone has their own opinion about people. If people say you are terrible, you should go and ask those people what exactly you did to make you a terrible person. For four years that I was making music with Samklef, everybody knew who he was. I was going about shouting ‘Samklef noni’. I am just being myself and trying to be a good person, everybody cannot like me and everybody cannot hate me. Fame has not changed me; the only thing it has changed is just the accessories I use and my clothes. I am still the same person,” Wizkid said. The singer is currently part of the Hennessey Artistry team and has composed a theme song with music legend, Tuface. |
Legendary singer, Innocent Idibia popularly known as Tuface, has explained how he handles female fans who do not want to respect his marriage. In a chat with Saturday Beats, the singer said that when a lady is trying to be too familiar with him, he introduces her to any of his single friends that is around at the time. “When I meet a female fan who is being unnecessarily familiar with me, I just greet her and move on with my life. If she is still being persistent, I would tell her that what she is looking for she cannot have. Then I introduce her to any of my single friends that is around,” he said. The singer hinted that three of his children are already showing signs of being singers. He also said that marriage has really brought a lot of changes into his life. “Three of my children are already showing signs of being good singers without my interference. I would say I am a natural coach. Marriage has made me calm and helped balance my life. I don’t do some certain things anymore because I am married,” Tuface said. Recalling the death of his father recently, he said that it was a painful period in his life and it was the last time he cried. “The last time I cried was when my father died. When the doctor told me that he was dead, I could not believe it. It was then it dawned on me that I would not see him again,” he said. However, the lanky entertainer told Saturday Beats that if he had not been a musician, he probably would have been a goalkeeper. |
According to source My Celebrity & I the lagos state police command is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the kidnap and murder of a 20-year-old undergraduate, identified as John Chinedu Okere, who until his death was a 300 level Electrical Engineering student at Covenant University, Otta in Ogun State. Chinedu left his parent’s house in the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2014, to a Hospital in Yaba, Lagos for medical reasons and never returned. He reportedly left home with about N6000 and that was the last time he was seen alive. The mysterious disappearance of Chinedu, caused a stir as the parents ran helter-skelter, in search of him to no avail. They gathered from some family members that one of his friends called on phone earlier that morning to tell him to meet him at an undisclosed hotel. KIDNAP: Crime Guard learnt that at about mid-day, the victim’s father, Jude Okere, received an SMS notifying him that Chinedu had been kidnapped. Later, he received a phone call from a hidden number demanding N10 million ransom for the release of his son. The caller allegedly threatened to kill the victim if the parents refused to comply as the line went dead. FATHER’S TESTIMONY; Chinedu’s father said: “At about mid-day, I received an SMS that John had been kidnapped. Later, I received a phone call from a hidden number. The caller said they had my son, Chinedu and demanded N10 million as ransom threatening to kill him if we refuse to comply. Immediately, I inquired who the caller was, the line went dead. My wife and I quickly reported the case to the Divisional Police Station at Sabo, Yaba.” After the case was reported to the Police at Sabo, Yaba, it was later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja the next day where investigations commenced. DEAD BODY IN A HOTEL ROOM: It was learnt that initially when the whole issue started, the family of the victim felt it was a kidnap that would just be resolved but unfortunately, as events continued to unfold, it turned out to be a premeditated murder. Shockingly, the decomposing corpse of Chinedu was discovered in one of the rooms at ‘DE Homes Hotel’ located in Ejigbo by one of their staff, two days later. According to reports, the Manager of the hotel went to Ejigbo Divisional Police Station on Friday, 8, 2014, to report the case of murder and investigation began. HOW SUSPECTS CHECKED INTO HOTEL; A reliable source in the hotel intimated that early on Wednesday morning, the prime suspect, Okorocha Michael along with another young man simply identified as Okey, checked into the hotel with the name Christian. “He booked the room for three days with the name Christian. He claimed he is a youth corps member who wanted to write exams and would be there from that Wednesday to Friday. He also said he was expecting his cousin to join him in the hotel. After booking, Michael left his friend Okey in the hotel and returned an hour before the victim, Chinedu arrived the hotel, which was at about 3pm that day. As soon as Chinedu arrived the hotel, Michael took him to the room. We don’t know what happened inside the room. However, it was later gathered that during their stay in the room, the suspect reportedly confronted the victim on some personal issues. The confrontation eventually led to a heated argument, which later led to the suspect strangulating the victim to death. On Friday, a hotel staff discovered the lifeless body of the young man and alerted the police.” ABANDONED IN A POOL OF BLOOD: According to reports, Chinedu was murdered and left in the pool of his blood by unfriendly friends, who brutally killed and abandoned his corpse, went ahead and demanded for ransom from his parents. Crime Guard learnt the 24-year-old suspect, Okorocha Michael, who was arrested on Sunday, in a friend’s house around Ajah area in Lagos, is a graduate of Lagos City Polytechnic, Ikeja. He has been unemployed since he completed his youth service in February this year. A family member who spoke on the condition of anonymity revealed that the Okere’s were willing to pay the ransom, and were still trying to get it when his corpse was discovered.

1: She has a life of her own. It’s important to show that you’re self-sufficient when you’re trying to impress a man,and it’s equally as important to maintain this when you’re in a relationship. The average modern man doesn’t want a lady to be clinging onto him all the time – it makes him feel suffocated. Rather than ditching your friends and family to spend time with a new love interest, make sure you keep separate plans in your diary at all times. 2: She is honest and loyal. Be honest with your love interest. If you tell them that a)you’re in a relationship but going through a particularly difficult situation b) you have a strange obsession with feet; or c) anything else that could potentially make them run for the hills, then you’ve done the right thing. Okay, may be hold back on option b for now, but you see what we’re getting at. Anything that they may find out further down the line and could put them off should be made clear from the outset, or you risk wasting the time of you both. 3: She looks after herself. This is one thing that hasn’t changed since the days of our most distant ancestors; men like a woman who takes a pride in her appearance and vice versa. We’re not talking about being a tall, slim super model – it’s not all about looks – but a little primping and preening here and there goes a long way. Wear something that accentuates your fantastic figure. Wear makeup to highlight your natural features; style your hair to compliment your face; and spritz on your favourite scent to boost your confidence. 4: She is self-confident. Nowadays, being needy attracts little more than a few raised eyebrows. Despite coming across as confident, rarely do the celebrities you see in the media feel as bold and confident as they look. It’s all about faking it. Instead of zoning in on your weaknesses, develop and maximise your strengths to put you in the right frame of mind. Make sure you use your body language to your advantage, as this can help you to fake confidence when really you might prefer it if the ground were to swallow you up. Stand tall, make eye contact, and smile, for an instantly more confident you. 5: She is mature and well-spoken. Baby talk can be cute but don’t use it too often. Your average modern man likes his woman to be able to hold down an intellectual conversation as well as having a good sense of humour, and cutie-overload could put him off. Talk about interesting topics and be sure to listen to him as well as inputting your own thoughts and ideas into the conversation. Hold back on slang words for your first few dates and avoid swear words too, as they come across as uncouth. |

1: He is honest and loyal. Prove to your love interest that you are kind, honest, and loyal,a genuinely charming fellow, some may say. Terms such as ‘love rat’ and ‘dirt bag’ weren’t made up just for a laugh you know. Many women have had the unfortunate experience of dating these time wasters in disguise as princes on numerous occasions, and rarely does it have a happy ending. In fact, once a woman has dated one of these scheming snakes, boy does she remember it; it takes a long time to rebuild the trust that she once built up only to have it come crashing down, so being honest and loyal will go a long way in impressing her. If you’ve been a scheming little scoundrel in the past, it may be best to keep it quiet now as you have (please say you have) changed. In such circumstances, don’t talk about how you cheated on your ex and broke her heart. This will almost definitely put your potential new flame off for good. In short, be a charming chap and you can’t go far wrong. 2: He possesses a good sense of humour Now, as we’ve got the serious stuff out of the way, let’s move onto the exciting part –humour. Who doesn’t love a good rib-clutching bit of humour that makes us gag for oxygen every now and again? Studies have shown that many women favour humour over looks in a potential partner, so there’s still hope for many of us yet. Just a quick flick through the lonely hearts shows that, indeed, a “GSOH”must be one of the most favourable traits in a man. A good sense of humour acts as a natural aphrodisiac and will turn your love interest’s thoughts about you from “okay” to “hey hey!” in less than thirty seconds. 3: He has ambition. Men with drive, men with goals, men with a burning desire to get somewhere in life – this ambitious type of gentleman attracts women. We’re not suggesting that you should be climbing the career ladder at break-neck speeds to be deemed as ambitious, but you’ll have a much easier time winning over a woman if you can demonstrate some form of passion, objective, or ambition in life. No woman wants a man who sits around being content doing nothing, so if this is you, things need to change. Fill your life with interests and hobbies – things to talk about when she asks you what you enjoy. Identify where you want to be in life and make it happen. Women will be falling at your feet in no time. 4: He practices good hygiene. This is a no-brainer. Whilst your rock star charm may have made the girls drool in school,slicked-back greasy hair, dirt under your nails, and tingeing the air with your body odour won’t get you in the ladies. You don’t have to rival your love interest’s beauty routine to take a pride in your appearance – just put the basic hygiene rules into practice and you’ve mastered the basics. Have a shower, trim your nails, get your hair trimmed, and wear decent clothes. Sloppy is not sexy so scrub up! 5: He is dominant and protective. As much as women love to show their independence, scientific studies have suggested that they are subconsciously attracted to dominant, assertive men. This isn’t to say that you should make her feel intimidated and uncomfortable. No woman wants to be slowly backing into a corner as an overzealous man tries to express his affection in the form of a passionate embrace. If a difficult situation arises though, take charge and be protective over her and not that you will want to oversee everything she is doing, this might make her feel trapped. As much as you may shudder with panic when you have to remove a cockroach or spider from the bathroom – try your best to be fearless. |

***Try these tips to improve your memory and recall ability. They are easy and realistic! The brain is not really that too fumigated for the pest of time not to eat the information you store there. Truly memory just like a fridge reliant wholly on PHCN, it is that unreliable and it is no news that some things we store there get rotten and we start forgetting. It is only as normal as it is common, if your brain leaks, getting a “mental plumber” to come fix the leakage is no big deal. There is now a fat chunk of memory enhancing activities that could make your memory one assured cold-room where you could keep decomposable information; and yet not forget! 1. The first one is chunking. Keeping aggregate stock of information rather than in pieces helps better. It could be easier remembering 68,786,509 rather than 6,8,7,8,6,5,0,9. Researches have proven that this chunking strategy helps a generous lot through early Alzheimer. 2. Another winning memory formation is the use of mnemonics. This really helps a lot. Keping ROYGBIV in your head is way easier that memorizing individually the orderly colours of the spectrum or rainbow. How about the order of taxonomy, Kids Prefer Cheese Over Fried Green Spinach is a safer memory container than attempting to store individually Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species! 3. Attaching meaning is a handsome plus. Try to assist names with correspondent meaning. For example, if you want to remember that the fattening foods you hope to buy when you go on shopping like beef, cheese, butter once you remember a very fat friend of yours called Bob! Bob sparks a plump intuition into you helping you remember what foods are the tenants of his intimidating stomach. 4. Repetition could be as well important. Familiar sounds tends to be the landlords of our memory as they don’t easily leave. Do you know you could feel a memory spark when you hear a sound that you were regularly hearing like ten years ago? 5. Writing down is one bomb. We all know one embassy through information could get visas to stay in our memory for long is writing down! Aside that, it is powerful reference point for you when your memory goes rusty. 6. How much have you thought of the number 7? As you try to store information in your short-term memory, consider that scientists have proven that the average capacity of our short-term memory is 7. So you could be nominated for a Nobel Prize if you perfectly recollect a 17-item list accidentally! Sure it is fun knowing that the hostels in our memory could be renovated and expanded. Do you think it is impossible for a 78 year old man to remember the colour of the socks his boss wore to work exactly seven months ago |

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, urging it to investigate the aviation minister, Stella Oduah for fraud and extortion, the Punch newspaper reported on Saturday. Falana’s firm said in the petition that the N255 million used by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, to purchase two BMW armoured vehicles for Oduah was acquired illegally. It did not follow due process. “Apart from the fact that the said threat to the life of the minister was never reported to the police, the extortion of the sum of N255m from the NCAA, a parastatal under the Ministry of Aviation, is fraudulent in every material particular Specifically, the said sum of N255m was not appropriated by the National Assembly while the officials of the NCAA who authorised the expenditure of the sum of N255m exceeded their approval limit,” said Falana’s firm. The petition was signed by Samuel Ogala, the Punch said. Falana’s firm threatened to approach the court and compel the EFCC to investigate Oduah. The petition came the same day the NCAA described the leak as criminal and admitted that a manhunt was underway to unmask the whistleblower of the car leak. “I am not saying that this particular information should not be put in the public domain. But how it was obtained is the concern. If somebody breaks into an office and makes copies of official documents, then the break-in has become criminal,” said Fola Akinkuotu at a press conference in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. “So we are in the process of trying to find the source of this leakage and I am very concerned about it. Because this information may look trivial but there are other information that we have that are confidential and it is only fair for us to respect the confidentiality of information. I am not saying that they broke into our office, but they obtained the information illegally,” he added. Akinkuotu compared to leak to the Edward Snowden saga in America, saying that the American ran away after leaking public information. |
The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) on Monday in Abuja said Nigeria lost over $11 billion to crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism between 2009 and 2011. The NEITI chairman, Ledum Mitee, disclosed this at the public presentation of NEITI audit reports for the oil and gas sector for 2009 to 2011 and the Solid Minerals Sector Audit for 2007-2010. The report, which was carried out by NEITI auditors, highlighted the transaction and revenue flows between government agencies and international oil companies operating in Nigeria. According to the report, more than 136 million barrels of crude oil estimated at $10.9 billion have been lost to theft and sabotage within the period under review. “This amount which was 7.7 percent of the total revenue accrued to the federation in the audit period is considered significant. “This was in addition to a loss of about 10 million barrels valued at $894 million as a result of pipeline vandalism in downstream operations”, Mitee said. The report said that the nation recorded over 2.5 billion barrels of crude oil production amounting to total revenue of $143.5 billion from equity crude sales, royalty, signature bonuses and taxes within the period under review. The breakdown of the crude oil production given by the report indicated that 780.9 million barrels were recorded in 2009. It said that 894.5 million barrels were recorded in 2010 while the number of barrels recorded in 2011 declined slightly to 866.2 million barrels due to activities of vandals. The report also noted that the Federal Government paid N3 trillion as subsidy payments to marketers of refined petroleum products during the period. It said that the NNPC accounted for N1.4 trillion of the subsidy claims while other marketers claimed the remaining N1.60 trillion. “From the findings of the report, the subsidy payments made through NNPC increased from N198 billion in 2009 to N416 billion in 2010 and nearly doubled in 2011 to N786 billion. “During the same period, subsidy paid through PPPRA increased from N208 billion in 2009 to N278 billion in 2010 and astronomically to N1.12 trillion in 2011”, he said. The report also uncovered a disparity of N175.9 billion between the subsidy claims paid from the federation account and the one made by the Petroleum Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA). “The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation reported to NEITI auditors a total subsidy payment of N2, 825 trillion while the PPPRA disbursed N3 trillion to marketers during the same period. “Some marketers disagreed with the amount ascribed to them by the PPPRA, especially in 2010 where a marketer claimed N2. 56 billion as fuel subsidy. “The PPPRA recorded payment of N1.5 billion, leaving an un-reconciled difference of N1.04 billion”, Mitee said. The report said that N4.423 billion being over-recovery collected from some marketers had yet to be remitted to the federation account while the NNPC and two other companies were yet to refund N3.715 billion being over-recovery for the period under review. |
The UN General Assembly has elected five new nonpermanent members to the UN Security Council. Saudi Arabia, Chad, Nigeria, Chile, and Lithuania will serve for two years on the 15-member Security Council, starting January 1, 2014. All five countries ran unapposed in the October 17 election, but they still needed approval from two-thirds of the General Assembly. They will replace Morocco, Togo, Pakistan, Guatemala, and Azerbaijan. Chad, Saudi Arabia, and Lithuania have never served on the U.N.'s most powerful body, while Nigeria and Chile have both been on the Council four times previously. The Security Council has five veto-wielding permanent members -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China -- and 10 nonpermanent members. |
The leader of the Somali Islamist militant group al Shabaab has for the first time confirmed claims by members of his group that it was behind the attack on a Nairobi shopping mall that killed at least 72 people and destroyed part of the complex. In an audio posted on the al Shabaab-linked website www.somalimemo.net on Wednesday night, Ahmed Godane, also known as Mukhtar Abu al-Zubayr, said the attack on the mall was in retaliation for Kenya's incursion in October 2011 into southern Somalia to crush the insurgents. "Take your troops out or prepare for a long-lasting war, blood, destruction and evacuation," Godane said in the message, apparently directed at the Kenyan government. |
The governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, also known as BRF, turned 50 on Friday, June 28, 2013. He was first elected on April 14, 2007 and assumed office on May 29, 2007 and was reelected on April 26, 2011 and sworn in to his second and final term on May 29, 2011. Before his initial election in 2007, this column wrote a strong endorsement of Fashola based not on personal or partisan considerations, but on an objective review of his performance at an interaction with segments of the Lagos business and professional elite at the LBS Breakfast Club in the run-up to the 2007 elections. I sat through that presentation attempting to look into his soul, character and person and I concluded that this was an atypical public servant whose motivation was likely to be service, rather than power and self. I have been very gratified that he has not disappointed me and the vast majority of Lagos voters who endorsed him in 2007 and more overwhelmingly in 2011. Fashola attended Birch Freeman High School, Lagos and Igbobi College Yaba, Lagos for advanced level studies. I was in Form 5 at Igbobi while BRF was in Lower Six, but we were neither friendly nor close. He studied Law at the University of Benin, graduated in 1987 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. I am told by those who closely watched him that Fashola was dedicated, focused, well-prepared and thorough in his court room presentations. He has brought those same attributes to bear on his gubernatorial duties in Lagos State. He practiced in the law firm of Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe and Belgore engaging in varied aspects of litigation and commercial law practice and became a Notary Public of the Supreme Court and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Apparently, BRF had been involved behind the scenes in the transition committees that laid the groundwork for the Bola Tinubu administration in 1999 and served on a panel of enquiry into certain housing matters in the state. When Tinubu’s erstwhile chief of staff, Lai Mohammed (now ACN/APC publicity secretary), resigned to contest the Kwara governorship in 2002, he turned to Fashola to take up the role and to the surprise of everyone, including Fashola himself, Tinubu tapped him to contest the 2007 governorship on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Fashola’s performance in office has been nothing short of remarkable! He has made huge impact on Lagos across a wide and diverse array of sectors – infrastructure, security, education, health and social welfare, sports, ICT and innovation, agriculture, trade and investment, etc. Most importantly, he has shown Nigerians that the possibilities are immense, where there is the right leadership. In the area of security, he has kept Lagos secure, against significant odds – an under-resourced federal police with low morale has been made to function effectively with resources generated through an innovative public-private partnership funding mechanism, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, which has improved policing logistics and improving personnel welfare and infrastructure. Fashola has transformed infrastructure in Lagos State. A visitor who was last in Lagos in 2006 would not believe the changes in the state – the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the ongoing Badagry Expressway and rail line, the Ikorodu road expansion and BRT project, and new roads in virtually all areas of the state will astound any objective observer. The concentration on social spending on the education and health sectors continues apace with investments in infrastructure – new general hospitals, new primary health centres, specialised hospitals, significant upgrades at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), etc have improved the delivery of health care across the state. Many schools have been upgraded and teachers’ training and morale have also received significant attention. A Lagos State Innovation Council is seeking ways of fostering creativity and innovation in the state; the state is quietly transforming agriculture, building rice mills and positioning to achieve food independence in the short and medium term. There is an airport project; a seaport project; a free trade zone; a new ministry of energy to drive energy self-sufficiency – no sector has been left untouched by Fashola’s truly transformative touch. Most importantly, in my view, BRF has brought new ethos and values to governance in Lagos State and offered a worthy alternative model to his colleagues in the rest of Western Nigeria and the country. He has shown that there is nothing intrinsic in our genes as black people that makes us unfit for leadership; he has demonstrated that government can indeed be an effective instrument of transformation even in a corrupt and dysfunctional nation like ours; he has proved that it is possible to assemble a leadership team in the public space that can function as effectively and competently as any in the private sector. I have said on my TV programme, “The Policy Council”, that if Nigeria was a rational country where people acted in their own best interest rather than in a subjective and ultimately self-destructive way, there would be an overwhelming clamour for Fashola to contest the 2015 presidency. That is my own personal preference and that seems to me like the path his political party, the ACN/APC, should be taking rather than considering presenting obviously unsuitable options to the Nigerian people based simply on ethno-religious considerations. |
