First Bank employee on the run after diverting ₦40 billion; bank begins recovery

First Bank, a Nigerian bank with a market capitalisation of ₦829 billion has begun legal action to recover “huge sums of money” allegedly diverted by an employee at a head office team in Iganmu, Lagos. The employee, now on the run, allegedly diverted those funds to 98 bank accounts classified as first beneficiaries, including his wife’s.

The bank reported the incident to the Nigerian Police Force on March 25, 2024, and obtained three court orders between April 4–8, 2024 to block hundreds of bank accounts believed to have received the stolen funds.

Three people with direct knowledge of the incident told TechCabal that while the initial amount discovered to be diverted was around ₦12 billion, it now stands at around ₦40 billion ($29 million).

As a manager on the electronic products team at First Bank, the employee, identified by court documents as Tijani Muiz Adeyinka was authorised to process reversals for customers, said one First Bank employee with knowledge of the matter. It meant he controlled an account with which he processed those reversals and could credit merchant accounts.

You still don't get it, the recruitment is in progress it was never completed and appointment letter was never issued to anyone in the Rivers State civil service Commission. The former process will be replaced and people given opportunity to get recruited.

The former process required you to get nominated by political officials like ward chairmen of the party, LGA chairmen , commissioners , House of Assembly members that was why there was no standards followed anyone nominated gets it instead of people going through the recruitment process. It's a good thing for everyone to be on same level playing ground now. If the process has been completed before now and appointment letter issued I would have no option but to support that they remain in their respective positions but it has not been completed and no one had appointment letter as regards to this civil service Commission recruitment

Appointment letters were issued. Civil servants I'd card was given. The people had even started working and posted to various departments. If Fubara thinks they weren't qualified he should have subjected to rescreening. If we continue in this way in four years time or eight years those he employed now will be dropped by another governor.

Nigerians need this and not old anthem changed because you people couldn't recite the Arise I compatriots!.

Stop whining yourself, the real rason Wike recruited is the reason he is fighting Fubara, Fubara election was just a means to an end. The end is to keep controlling power and governance and be in charge of rivers state, Fubara being governor was just a tool for him. It is so sad if people were sacked, but i have not seen a report that says people were sacked, all Fubara did was cancel a flawed process, he will absorb the useful ones into the civil service, but verification has to be done. If the governor is right that the list is filled with people over 50s, then that does not make sense.

What he would have done is to screen out those not qualified or find a way to compensate them. Amaechi did that to those Omehia employed.

Those who do not know may hail Fubaras decision.
Towards the end of Wikes tenure and as usual with most government. Obaseki is presently doing that. Wike decided to recruit into the civil service. The whole idea was for the recruited people to massively vote for Fubara as that was the only way their jobs could be retained. Those recruited had their families to convince to vote Fubara as that was the only way they won't be sacked.
I personally voted Fubara for this reason. A close relative of mine benefitted from the recruitment. Fubara was aware that Wike took this decision to his benefits. Fubara won the election courtesy of this strategy. Before Fubara won these people had worked for over 4 to 5 months with promise that they would be paid once things got settled. While these people were merrying that Fubara had won Fubara first action in office was to sack them all.
He sacked them with no pay or compensation. These people underwent all the required process of civil service recruitment including issuing of Government ID Cards.
Some of them resigned their previous jobs.

I may not know all that have been explained but the one I grabbed here tells me that these people think we are fools.
On oil revenues 460 billion last year at 1 dollar to ₦550.
Today $1 is about ₦1500.
Please those who are good in maths should calculate if we are making progress. And sometimes Tinubu won't understand this manipulation.
Mathematically the equivalent of 460 billion naira about this time last year is 1.2 trillion today going by the prevailing exchange rate.
