Before, during and after the war ikwerres have always maintained that they have no historic ties with the Igbos. Ikwerres formed the Ogbakor Ikwerre Convention in 1963 even before the Igbos had their Ohaneze. This was years before the war as to say ikwerres disassociated from them after the war. In 1965 in what is today known as Rumuomasi Declaration Ikwerre posited that they were neither Ijaw, Ogonis or any other tribe including the Igbos but Ikwerre and a distinct ethnic nationality.

There may be Igbos in Rivers State but Ikwerre is not one. We the ikwerres also have Igbos among us. They are from the Aros stock. At the fall of the Nigerian Biafran War they had no where to go to and some Ikwerre communities absorbed them. Some of them have tried to assimilate but no matter how hard they tried the local communities they are still see them as Igbos and hence strangers. They don't full right of the natives. For this reason they have always identified with Igbos and Ohaneze.
