I realized long ago that Nigeria is a place where you can make money easily. Very easily. The stock exchange has made people like me millions of naira without lifting a finger and in a very short time span.

At least six people have died in Britain after being told that they had been healed of HIV, and could stop taking their medication.

There is evidence that evangelical churches in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow are claiming to cure HIV through God.

We sent three undercover reporters into the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) , which is based in Southwark, south London.

All of them told the pastors that they were HIV positive. All were told that they could be healed.

Once a month the church has a prayer line, where people from across Europe come to be cured of all kinds of illness.

At registration they have to hand over a doctor's letter as evidence of their condition

They are filmed giving before and after testimonies, which are put on SCOAN's website.

The healing process involves the pastor shouting, over the person being healed, for the devil to come out of their body, and spraying water in their face.

One of the pastors, Rachel Holmes, told our reporter, Shatila, who is a genuine HIV sufferer, they had a 100% success rate.

"We have many people that contract HIV. All are healed."

She said if symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhoea persist, it is actually a sign of the virus leaving the body.

"We've had people come back before saying 'Oh I'm not healed. The diarrhoea I had when I had HIV, I've got it again.' I have to stop them and say 'no, please, you are free.'"

SCOAN told our reporters they would be able to discard their medication after their healing and that they would be free to start a family.

Former health secretary Lord Fowler, who led the HIV/Aids awareness drive in the 1980s, says this message is dangerous.

"It is foolish advice and it is tragic advice because the consequences of this kind of advice can only be that people pass on HIV and can only be seriously bad for the individual concerned - including death."

Medical professionals have told Sky News of at least six patients who have died after being told by various churches to stop taking their HIV tablets.

Emmanuel came off his medication a year ago, on the instructions of a pastor at his church in North London.

"He told me I'd been healed: 'You've got to stop taking the medicine now. I'll keep praying for you. Once God forgives you then the disease will definitely go.'"

Emmanuel admits he suspects he may have passed his HIV onto his boyfriend.

"Yeah, I think I've passed it on. He got ill. Physically he's lost some bit of weight. He's very small. I think he's worried, Yeah I feel guilty, if I'm the one who passed it onto him I'm feeling guilty. Yeah very much guilty."

The Synagogue Church of All Nations is wealthy. It has branches across the globe and its own TV channel.

On its website it promotes its anointing water, which is used during the healing, and it also makes money from merchandise, such as DVDs, CDs and books.

Church members are expected to give regular donations.

It is also a registered UK charity. The Charity Commission is looking at our findings.

The Department of Health says it is very concerned: "Our advice is clear that faith and prayer are not a substitute for any form of treatment, especially for HIV treatment."

Sky News asked the church for its response to our investigation. Here is its statement:

"We are not the Healer; God is the Healer. Never a sickness God cannot heal. Never a disease God cannot cure. Never a burden God cannot bear. Never a problem God cannot solve.

"To His power, nothing is impossible. We have not done anything to bring about healing, deliverance or prosperity. If somebody is healed, it is God who heals.

"We must have a genuine desire if we come to God. We are not in position to question anybody's genuine desire. Only God knows if one comes with true desire. Only God can determine this.

"That is why, if anybody comes in the name of God, we pray for them. The outcome of the prayer will determine if they come genuinely or not."

A total of 560,882 claims has been filed with the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) by members of the public, against 440 illegal fund managers/wonder banks amounted to a whopping sum of N106.94 billion. This represents about 41 per cent of the total insured deposit of about N4.94 billion.

Disclosing this at a recent media briefing, the Managing Director, NDIC, Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, said that the corporation was fighting hard to address the problems created by the activities of illegal fund managers and wonder banks in the country.
He also disclosed that as at July, 2011, the corporation paid an aggregate of N2.024 billion to about 69,000 depositors of Micro Finance Banks whose operating licences were revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to the NDIC boss, a joint inter-agency committee with members drawn from CBN, SEC, CAC, EFCC and NDIC also established that 36 companies accounted for the N104 billion or 98 per cent while Nospetco Oil and Gas alone accounted for 48 per cent.
He stated that with the efforts of the committee, the court appointed a liquidator to wind up one of the illegal fund managers, Sefteg Company Nigeria Limited adding that the committee was able to realise N500 million and had commenced verification and payment of investors of the company.

While reviewing landmark achievements of the Corporation since 1989 during the Corporation's special day at the 25th Lagos International Trade Fair, Ibrahim noted that the Corporation had been discharging its mandate creditably, thereby contributing to the safety, soundness and stability of the nation’s banking system.
He said: “As part of its landmark achievements, the Corporation commenced the implementation of risk based supervision in 2009 with 12 banks jointly examined by the NDIC and CBN. It also conducted a target examination of all the micro-finance banks in the system in February, 2010. The findings revealed the grave conditions of many MFBs, which led to the revocation of licences of 103 MFBs.

He was however surprised that despite their landmark achievements, the NDIC had been misunderstood by some members of the public, some of whom he said regard the corporation as an undertaker or an agency that focus its attention on bank liquidation.
He said: “Similarly, concerned about the poor level of corporate governance, unguided credit boom and the unfortunate deterioration in asset (loan) quality of the insured institutions, the CBN/NDIC conducted a special examination of 24 deposit money banks in August 2009, which revealed that 10 of the banks were in grave condition.

“The findings from the examination led to the removal of eight CEOs of the distressed banks by the CBN, which also injected the sum of N620billion as tier 2 capital in the affected banks.
“While five of the banks, had either found willing merger partners/acquirers and (or) were making serious efforts to improve their financial condition through recapitalisation, the other three, namely Afribank Plc., Bank PHB Plc and Spring Bank Plc were apparently not making much effort that might yield meaningful results by the end of September 30, 2011 deadline.

“On August 5, 2011, therefore, the NDIC, pursuant to the provisions of the NDIC Act, and after due consultation with the CBN and the Federal Ministry of Finance, established three bridge banks for the transfer of the assets and liabilities of the Afribank Plc, Bank PHB Plc and Spring Bank Plc. The three banks were Mainstreet Bank Limited, Keystone Bank Limited and Enterprise Bank Limited respectively.
Among other benefits, the bridge banks mechanism not only safeguarded N809.4billion (USD5.5billion), it also protected jobs in the affected banks. In addition, the three banks were acquired by the Asset Management Corporation on the same day with an infusion of N678.8 billion (USD4.526billion).

LAGOS- (AFP) – The Nigerian Airport Authorities have fined British Airways $135 million and Virgin Atlantic $100 million amid a dispute over ticket prices, the head of the Nigerian Airport Authorities said Thursday.

Harold Demuren told AFP the fines were “$135 million against BA, $100 million against Virgin Atlantic …,” alleging overcharging in ticket prices.

Like Judas goat, he led the unsuspecting lambs to the slaughter. He swore that he never meant to swindle anybody but four years after his victims took that tragic turn in the road, all most of them have to show for their ‘labour’ is tears and debts the size of a small Latin-American country. And those are the lucky ones. The others are dead, killed by depression and disillusionment.

Driven either by greed or the desire to generate more income from an alternative source, over 13,000 ‘investors’ had in 2007 fallen for the juicy investment package offered by a supposedly oil and gas firm, NOSPETCO Oil and Gas Limited. And before their very eyes, they were conned of their hard-earned money amounting to over N22 billion. Their investment had not only disappeared like smoke, they have also been left in the cold without a trace of the promoters of the so-called oil and gas firm turned wonder bank.

Worse still, no fewer than 25 out of the 13,618 investors have been certified dead. There could be more unreported dead victims elsewhere.
Their lawyer, Debo Adeleke, who revealed the identity of the dead depositors, noted that they died after over four years of frustration, depression and uncertainty, as they could not ascertain whether or not they would get their money back.
According to him, “this is a case that cries to high heavens for vengeance.

It was high drama recently in Lagos when over 7000 Nigerians realized they had fallen prey to the tricks of one Fred Olawale Makanjuola, owner of Crystal Services, an immigration consultancy outfit.

Olawale packaged a programme, inviting Nigerians who want to live and work in Canada to apply. The package he told them was free and his agency would foot the bill while the applicants would sign a bond to pay him back twice what he intends to spend. To further convince them, he involved the services of the police that provided Character Certificate clearance, the federal high court where affidavit were obtained, St. Nicholas Hospital and the National Hospital, Abuja for medical clearance.

Although the package was free, applicants paid at least N50,700 for registration. The victims cut across social and economic strata, that even the enlightened were part of it. But how won’t one fall for a trap where the master of the game staged a symposium at UNILAG, invited people he said were from banks, Immigration, NDLEA and others to coach the victims on how to travel to Canada and actualize their dreams while maintaining clean image for Nigeria.

Even applicants from nearby African countries travelled down to Nigeria to benefit from this dubious programme.
The bubble burst when the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP) got letters sometime in June from applicants trying to confirm whether Crystal Services was not into human trafficking. The agency discovered that it was a scam and visited the office at No. 8 Okuneye Avenue, Famous Bus Stop, Pedro, Shomolu, with a search warrant when Makanjuola refused to honour their invitation.

Addressing the confused crowd Mr. Josiah Emerole, Head of Lagos Zonal office, who led the team to break into the office, told the crowd that it was a scam as they had investigated and discovered that the house indicated as his address was occupied by a young couple and his business is not registered. “He honoured our invitation, sometime in June and we asked him to provide documents to help us ensure that it was not an agency for human trafficking. We wrote to him severally and he failed to respond. It was then that the agency decided to lock the premises and arrest his secretary, Ronke Adeosun. It is with a search warrant that we have come to open the office.”

The office was opened and cartons filled with Nigerian passports were discovered. Emerole who showed the confused crowd the passports asked them to go as the agency would contact them as soon as investigation is complete. Meanwhile the victims who still insist that their visas could still be in their passports besieged the NAPTIP office in Ikeja. As at Thursday Saturday Sun had reliable information that about 2000 of the passports that had been opened, and none had visas. Efforts to get across to NAPTIP failed as Saturday Sun was informed that a formal statement would be issued when investigation is complete.

Perfected game
Makanjuola, a 32-year-old man placed an advert late last year on TV and newspapers wooing interested Nigerians who dream to travel abroad. Part of his promise was that the agency would bear the cost of moving them out of the country, if they agree to pay back with interest after they must have settled into their jobs. Days after that publication, a crowd besieged his office indicating interest. Before the advert, he had sold application forms for N1000 but when he discovered the number of applicants, he immediately hiked the fee to N50,700. On the sudden increase, he told the applicants that he wanted to foot the bill for medicals but the number of persons interested in the programme made it impossible. According to some of the victims, he explained that the amount is expected to cover medical clearance and registration. Still that did not deter the teeming crowd from picking the forms.
To further convince them that the scam was no scam at all he directed them to Alagbon police unit in Ikoyi to obtain fingerprint clearance. He also demanded sworn court affidavit indicating that the amount spent on each of them is N750,000 and they are to pay back double in two years.

They also filled a form for traveller’s cheque from GT Bank. He later organized a symposium to enlighten his victims on what they are expected to do when they get to Canada. The symposium held at the UNILAG main auditorium on June 10 and had one Mrs. D. O. Abidogun, claimed to be an immigration officer from the Department of Human Trafficking, Dr. Anthony Clerk who was the MC and one Barrister Odion a GTBank representative. While it appeared the process was clean, he planted agents to extort money from applicants with the excuse that they would put their names in the first batch.
Text messages

To further convince them that he is grounded in his art, he sent series of texts to applicants to inform them on plans for the trip. To notify them of the travellers cheques he sent this text: “You are hereby scheduled for an invitation to apply manually for your Basic Travel Allowance at Crystal Services. Venue 8 Okuneye Avenue, Famous bus stop. Date: 2nd August 2011. First session 10am to 12pm. Second session 1-3pm. 3rd session 3.30-4pm. Note you are to tender the following – your sworn affidavit, 2 passport photos, invitation sent by Crystal Services (not a forwarded message)”

When his initial departure date of August 20 was fast approaching, he sent this: “Thanks once again for believing in our programme. We are earnestly working towards the success and reality of our moving schedules, a slight change was made on our date of departure which was due to the Ramadam season. Our new date is September 11th and 12th 2011. Note, ensure you get the carton colour or lace material.”

This came few days after: “Take notice of the under mentioned dates: 11th day of September: Exhibition at the National Theatre, 12th day of September: Air lifting commences with applicant registration numbers.13th Day of September: Air lifting continues to the last registration number, 14th day of September, Foreign orientation in Dubai for three days: 15th Movement to Manitoba, Canada: 19th arrival party, 20th day of September Rest day, 21st to 22nd of September: Registration, assimilation and association. 23rd to 29th day of September training and seminar: 29th of September confirmation/collection of certificate. 1st of October, collection of materials, 2nd of October Future begins. Signed Crystal Services.”

On September 11, dressed in their uniform, his victims who bade farewell to their families gathered at the National Theatre for the exhibition and takeoff the next day as planned. About 7000 Nigerians waited anxiously until they received another text message saying: “We are sincerely sorry for not meeting up with our exhibition plan as scheduled, we want you to know that the air lifting is most paramount and that has been our area of concentration for days now. We therefore, implore you to please bear with us as we will update you as we progress. Thanks! Pls. pass this information to as many applicants you have around you.”
They all dispersed and still the callous scammers sent another message through their agent for each to pay N2000 to enable them assist the airline operator to repair the plane. This amount majority paid into an account before the cat was let out of the bag – 7000 had been terribly fooled and swindled by one young man in a grand scam.

Was the Canadian High Commission aware of the plans to issue work permit to this number of Nigerians? Saturday Sun inquired.
According to their police liaison officer, the High Commission as far back as May received letters from the victims trying to find out whether the programme was genuine and they were told that it was a scam.
One of the letters made available to Saturday Sun, the Deputy High Commissioner of Canada, in it response to the victim said: “There is no such programme, and this is a scam. Canada has no fast-track programmes for immigration or work permits. Individuals who wish to work in Canada should follow the instructions and guidelines which can be found on the website at www.nigeria.gc.ca or www.cic.gc.ca.”

According to the liaison officer, no High Commission appoints agents outside the commission to run its activities. “Normally work permits are not given outside the country, the individual must have acquired a visa that befits that permit.”
When confronted with the allegations that Immigration service was a part of the scam, Muyiwa Odunubi, Lagos command Public Relation Officer debunked such allegation insisting that it could be a case of impersonation. “If any of the victims have a proof that an immigration officer was involved, let the person come forward. We need a photograph of the event showing the immigration officer. Let the victims help us to arrest this impersonator. We are not aware that such an agency is existing and did not at any time send a representative.”

Meanwhile Saturday Sun hopes to discover later how Makanjuola was able to operate an account in a new generation bank with fake identify in spite of the rules. We also hope to find out why the police issued fingerprint clearance to more than 7000 persons without raising an eyebrow and the Federal High Court that issued same number of affidavits without confirming what all these were about.

Tales of confused victims
Still finding it difficult to believe that they were defrauded most of the victims who spoke with Saturday Sun said the programme is real. They rather blame NAPTIP for destroying their dreams. They also accused the federal government for failing to protect its citizens from the fraudster because the agencies they were referred to failed to alert them that the programme was not real.
Emeka Okosun, a final year student of FUTO can’t believe the outcome. “I was supposed to take aptitude test for a job my father had arranged. How do I face my father, what will be my story? I investigated well, I went as far as visiting a native doctor in Ogun State and he confirmed that it was real. I know it is real, its NAPTIP that wants to spoil the business.”
Suleiman a businessman in Kano blames the police for failing to alert them, and said “I can’t believe that I have been defrauded. I consulted an alfa and he confirmed it.”

Chidi who claimed to have resigned from a job that pays him as much as N120,000 a month lamented that he sold almost everything he had to embark on the trip. He claimed to have given Olawale about N500,000 to ensure that his name is in the first batch. “I investigated this matter properly. I even went to GTBank and they confirmed that the travellers cheques had been processed and handed over to Fred. If a bank as big as GT would be convinced that this man is real why won’t I believe? If this is scam then, the bank, police, Federal High Court, Immigration and even lecturers are part of it. During the symposium at Unilag, a staff of the bank addressed us on how to use the travellers cheque when we get to Canada.

The immigration woman told us that it was real. The lecturer that claimed he came from LASU was there. There was also a representative from the NDLEA who advised us to stay away from drugs. I am seriously suspecting that NAPTIP is a spoiler because Fred refused to play ball.”
Another victim Lukeman Abiodun lamented that Fred collected money from them and is still withholding their passport. “I am a master’s degree holder and cannot believe what is happening. I am sure that this man must have visited the highest juju in Nigeria to perfect the plan.”
Faniyi Olalekan, is one of the lucky ones who parted with only N75,000 before he discovered that it was a scam. He wrote a letter to the embassy that informed him the deal was not clean.
A banker who is yet to come to terms that this is real thanked his stars that he did not tender his resignation letter before the bad turn of events. “My sister, I have my resignation letter in my pocket as we speak. Thank God I did not submit it. Three of my friends who were affected had resigned.”

The debate on the Lagos state tenancy bill which was passed into law in August continues to generate interest from every quarter as the state is set ,

to review the bill again in less than a month, according to the Lagos State Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye.

Recently, in an interactive session with journalist, Mr. Sola Fatoki, chairman of the Lagos State branch of Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, NIESV, noted that rent control in Lagos has never achieved the desired result.

While professional stakeholders are voicing their fears that the tenancy act might prevent investment in property in the state, the issue in town is not about investment but the problems that have arisen in a matter of weeks and months since the ascension of the bill, even before it became an act.

One of such problems is the unprecedented hike in house rents in many parts of town along with letters of quit notice by some landlords to their sitting tenants.

A spectator at Oko-Oba Agege, Ayoola Longe, noted in his area that a landlord served quit noticed to his tenants and hiked the rent for incoming tenants. “Their initial rent was N200, 000 per annum and he increased it to N270, 000 and refused to collect six months rents from the sitting tenants. When the quit notice was served, the tenants had to go pay for a year. The landlord also got new tenants who paid a total of N520, 000 to rent the same size of apartment for a year, since he cannot collect for two years.”

Also in Oworonshoki, the story is the same as a two bedroom apartment that was previously letting for N150, 000 - N200, 000 per annum of which intending tenants were expected to pay for two years has gone up to N350, 000 for a single year.

Home seekers have different stories to tell about their experiences in different parts of the state. Enifome Anthony, a microfinance employee who works on the Island said he’s been house hunting since the beginning of the year. “I want a mini-flat or 2 bedrooms flat in Surulere or Gbagada or Ajah,” he told BH. “The types I could afford were previously going for N180, 000 – N200, 000. I didn’t pay then because I had to pay for two years, agency and agreement so I was still saving before the tenancy bill was passed. The problem now is, apartment that was initially N180, 000 is now N250, 000 and add agency and agreement to that, I will be paying almost what I would have paid for two years. So in as much as the tenancy act is good to protect people like me, a proper regulation should be in place to check increase in house rental.”

Other spectators feel it is criminal and totally inconsiderate for landlords to hike rents in other to make more money.

“There is absolutely no difference in what the landlord makes at the end of day,” Onadeko Samson Adeyinka, a professional estate manager with Ampris Global Resources Ltd, an estate developing firm, said. “What the landlords who are increasing their rents fail to realize is that what they are doing is criminal. The bill wasn’t passed to enrich the landlord more and impoverish the tenant the more. Unfortunately, some agents also push the landlords to increase the rent so their commissions will be much without considering the middle income earner who is struggling to pay the rent.”

On complying with the law, Adeyinka noted that some landlords are now playing by the book and not hiking their rents like some others are doing.

Another stakeholder with Benaiah Energy, Edwin Agbodu, who also works as a real estate agent said “the state government is only trying to protect the tenants from harassment and unnecessary increase by their landlords. Let the truth be told, it is often difficult for many people to pay this 2 years rent. I also read that the law doesn't apply in some areas such as Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Ikeja Gra/ Apapa because of the high cost of properties at these special areas.”

He also confirmed what Adeyinka said above that many landlords are complying with the law. “In fact tenants are quoting the laws to the landlords as it is in their own interest.”

With issues of rent hike, and a black market situation that favours tenants who are willing to play by the landlords’ law, what can the government do to ensure that the tenancy act is not only enforced and obeyes, but that rent hike is checked?

“I will also expect the state government to begin construction of affordable housing projects for its average citizens like the Jakande regime and there should be provision for mortgages,” Edwin Agbodu said.

Other stakeholders agree that construction of affordable housing by the government will help, while calling on the government to lead by example in collecting land charges monthly, instead of annually

just wanted to know how genuine are they if purchasing from them , also need some one to inspect the used laptops be shipping to nigeria.
