Otuabaroku: Yes, with the general review, Godday is not bad idea. Concerning your requirement, WordPress would meet your requirement completely. About the revenue and advert, I advise you start with Google, when you have built enough traffic, you can decide to diversify to other advertisement options. About financial implication, it is up to you. If you want to get the job done by yourself, then, the money you will spend is that of hosting. If you want to contract it out, then it depends on the quality of job that you want .....Thanks for the heads up.... No, I am not contracting it out to anyone... What's the point of paying someone to design a site when I have absolutely no user base? and would probably grow very very very slowly?? And there are simple web templates to use for CMSs..?? I have a passion for it.... I have currently budgeted about N30, 000(max) as a small capital for it for 1year... (hosting, Internet subscriptions, contingencies, etc) ...I would do a few jobs to compensate for that money.... (I am an undergraduate student partially sponsoring myself).... Well... Another reason for having the site is for some sort of Reference and a Portfolio.... ...from the economic point of view... After some 6 to 7 months, when I may probably have some handy stuff up there... I may get a bit more lucky in outsourcing freelance programming jobs locally and over the Internet.... Also, I would pay, for the Hosting on a 1year upfront. |
skydancer: Nice. The correct time is around 4pm today. What language are you coding in?I use C++. Couldn't make it.... Finished my exam 5pm.... But will practice the questions and Ty round 1c instead... |
Greetings and peace offerings from the land of sand and sun....!!! I had a chat with someone earlier this year... And I Realized the usefulness and several advantages of a personal, and a tiny and technically inclined blog... Now, I have come to a decision of setting up one.... $$$###$$$ You don't have to understand this.... Just share your opinions on anyone you know.... QUESTIONS arise and of-cause, constraints.... $$CONSTRAINTS $$i am quite comfortable with php.... $$I've got no interest in having ANY OTHER deep knowledge of web-programming or ANY Web-framework... So please I would prefer the easier way... $$I will need a Syntax highlighter to post code snippets $$I have a domain with GoDaddy LCC $$..diversification is a bit important, should in case I want to redirect a sub domain to a VPS server to run some funny services in future...(I guess this involves those Namesever, dns, blah blah blah> $$... Simple Upload management and Downloads.... Large media files will NOT be posted ever. $$... Simple user management (from Admin down to Unregistered viewers... $$.... analytics NOT important.... But may be good if available... $$.... Revenue generation not important for now.... But should be able to integrate a bit easily in future. $$QUESTIONS $$Should I host my website(blog) with them(GoDaddy)? $Or who should I host it with? $$What CMS should I use that will give me (widgets? Plugins?) syntax highlights for code snippets...? $$Integration with Facebook and/or any code pasting or virtual source compilers?? $$Simple revenue generation? Ads?? Which Ad service provider? Google? $$What are the estimated financial implications?? $WHAT else should I consider? Please, recommendations... Contributions... and also, advise me ....cause I am a bit of a lazy n00b IN THIS KIND OF ENDEAVOUR Thanks! Timothy..... |
....Finally finishing examinations in the afternoon today!!!! . . . . I hope I get a shot to try my luck in Round 1b . . . ...if I don't ...then that's round 1c.... Next week |
spikes C: Gosh, i just saw this....hehehe.... Very funny! |
####¥¥¥¥¥###### Another simple program is a simple kitchen timer... Sometimes, we get so engrossed in movies that we end up burning the food that we kept on fire.... ...this program should just interrupt you on the cooking time.... And remainder... ###%%%%%#### A simple game.... Word puzzles... There are several possible advanced and more intuitive variations of the popular beginners game(program) "GUESS THE NUMBER" ...where the user plays around with random number generation with boundaries... And asks the user to guess the generated number.... ++++one advance variation of this is that, ....$$instead of numbers, you could get a corpus from wordnet... and generate random words then scramble it and present it to the user... Still, you can use some combinatorics to give the user hints.... ####%%%##### Another great variation of this that you could teach the user, some basic set theory.... generate two set of words, give the user some hints of relative positions of some letters that are intersections of the generated words.... And many simple set theory stufffffff,,, $g |
webdezzi: had this issue with adding over 700 LGA to each state.i dunno what and what you are manually ripping off, but . . .crawling and ripping off massive and DETERMINISTIC data(or hierachical information) from an OPEN, very much DEFINED and CONCLUSIVE(websites that you know their link structures from parent domain to its deep sub-urls) website like WIKIPEDIA should NOT be extremely 'difficult'... . . . Write a script that rips of the data you need... I believe you can even guess the requirements. . .(frankly, I would say the difficulty depends on your requirements) . . . That's what made me fall in sweet love with Python, can make a solo programmer's life easy... ...if applicable. . . .back to hiding. . . |
a very good C programmer, friend of mine, just told me he is serendipitously up for the next round with only two solutions..... What's up over here?? ". . . Even if you don't scale through, be poud of yourself for understanding at least one question of which 99% of your peers wouldn't. . ." ...#keepbusy |
Quite a while. . . This caught my exception. . . alexandra141: i see someone talking about python, python is an old language which is not appreciated among the likes of C++,C# and java. please try to learn this languageSir, IF its TRUE that (you have NEVER participated in a Compiler OR Interpreter OR Assembler implementation), THEN <you are at NO disposition to dish out ANY programming language.> ELSE <Just talk about your experience WITH RESPECT TO the software you were/wanted to use it for ... probably in another thread OR ...make chauvinistic statements, BUT with verifiable reasons> |
seconded!! |
lordZOUGA: but this does not exactly qualify as an excuse....maybe... ...or maybe not. Sometimes, for me as an undergraduate, hustling great GPAs is my priority... Javanian: : Please i heard you are given just 5 minutes for the first round, is it true?nope... If I correctly remember what I was told.you can solve any question(s) within the days alotted to your timezone.. Once you are sure you are done with a question, you DOWNLOAD input test cases(a text file) frm Google and you have just limited time(maybe 5mins) to UPLOAD output (the text file generated by your program) back to the Competition's server. |
Fayimora: Good luck to whoever is participating! Buzz me on twitter if you make it to the final round.hmn... Wish I could participate, but my semester exams wouldnt let me... Two questions... 1. Why wouldn't you participate?? 2. Why should you be contacted on twitter if any Nairalander makes it to the finals? (... I hope its either a job offer or extra reward!) |
Hello Nairalanders! ...I just stumbled upon this competition posted on Facebook by a young Egyptian Facebook friend(subscribed) of mine who works at google... ... I have read through and made enquiries... And this contest sure looks promising to our good Nairaland coders... You can use almost any popular programming language that at least has its compiler and/or standard library free. Its the Google Code Jam 2013! Registration opened on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 19:00 UTC (12:00 PM Pacific Time (PT) in the United States) and ends on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 0:00 UTC (Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 5:00 PM PT). I want to encourage the few programmers here to give it a shot if they would be available... The timing is quite flexible... Site here: http://code.google.com/codejam the schedules. . . and everything you need to know or prepare for is there in the link provided... |
Absolutely right!! You are on track!!! I love your standpoint!! # # # Quite frankly... Theory is good but cannot in anyway supercede Practical knowledge... Your post is funny... "..worst Engineering College.." ...with.. "iliterates as teachers".? ? ? ...if that's really true, then you must be really exceptional going out of your norms to have field experience in Programming... About the employment stuff... I am sure you have responsibilities, and more will be coming... My word of advice is that, you continue in the programming with an intense drive or passion, building portfolios for yourself. ...and secondly think of little ways of earning even meagre incomes (I dunno of India, but the Nigerian I. T's Labour Market is a National and Monumental embarrasment, as such, creating a job is easy to start, extremely hard to maintain and/or scale,.. .but on the long run, better than using degrees to find a life fulfiling job!) (try your luck with this why don't you suggest to your school or former school that you would volunteer to be the team's coach to start participating in programming competitions across India, Asia, and the renowned ICPC... #grounds to gain employment...the TopCoder idea is cool! I wish I had so much time to have a rating there... #I am also a C/C++ programmer... |
oops! Too late. You should have posted it much earlier |
Being comfortable with your tool is not in anyway wrong, as far as its of optimal efficiency, No problems!! ...ohkay, are you going to ask Mozilla, Apache, etc to use Lisp for the entirety of some of their project...? There are places where C/C++ clearly dominates! And, CURRENTLY, it is overly foolish to replace it with Scala, Lisp, Java etc. From the little I know of Lisp, it is really great! And highly recommended to any one that wants a good mix of efficiency and productivity! And so, it boils down to personal choice, employer's choice, or project's domain... And me sticking to C, C++, Python, PHP, and Erlang is a personal choice. Theres no need to argue about languages, though it is good to guage programming productivity w.r.t your Software's goal. @csharpjava, suggesting Mozart, it doesnt look bad... And quite frankly, for the past 5+years of programming, I am just knowing(as in, in detail) about that Language!! Do you code in it?? ...reasons? |
. . .finally... A boxing ring to continue.... #damn. I am not even good at arguments... WARNING: LONG post... ... Let me steal some concept from Intel's founder, Moore. 40 years ago, ... Computers were only available to a few rich people, research institutions, etc... If anyone or group needed some computing work, they lease it frm big people. Today, its different... But do you know, we still go to lease computers Ever heard of Computer Generated Imagery?? Some images requires quadrillion operations for just a frame!!! For now, theres no way rendering across a thousand smartphones of 1.5Ghz 1GB RAM will beat a few Intel Xeon, i7, or Nvidia CUDA based processer farms or grids. Agreed?? . . Today, A startup can just assemble a few hardware for its processing farm... Now... In the next 30 years... We should be able to do the designs on mobile... But by then, a single desktop will be okkay to render today's state of the art graphics. ....The problem is, don't you think today's state of the arts graphics is tomorrows state of the gutters graphics ![]() My point is.... *Desktop Apps were yesterday's CONSUMER inclined revolution... *Server Apps are today's ENTERPRISE and PRODUCTION inclined revolution *Web Apps are today's CONSUMER inclined revolution. . . (I can infer that it will fetch money quickly for people into it in the next few years...) *Desktop Apps will be tomorrows PRODUCTION AND ENTERPRISE revolution. . . . . . And by the way, most 'backends' of Web Apps are written in General Purpose Languages... Like the C/C++, Java, Erlang, Python... etc... |
haha.... ..lol. @Zouga, zebudaya, javanian and ciphoenix... I think Zebudaya is a quick-cash and a myopic *programmer or web guy. . . @zouga, you seem to have a bit of Linus Torvald's attitude... ..ohh. . . .anyway... Nobody should be disturbed... Wanting to make quick cash from programming is totally a bad idea. Also... Whatever language you choose, you can use it to make solid impacts in its relevant domain... and in today's world... |
hoodboi: Why I chose desktop apps is that it is gradually getting fazed out. Fresh ideas can improve it. But u cn pretty much suggest any sort of appdesktop apps wouldnt even be close to out. in the next few decades!! .... Computers will only get MUCH more powerful and smaller in physical size. Maybe ...a revolution in its nature... Like single screen, multiple users.... 3D desktops on Holographic displays... Virtual reality desktops... etc... Still a long way sha... |
lordZOUGA: you want a human consciousness app?I wouldn't appreciate such software, but that's where I see software going in the next few decades. . . Intelligent softwares... (attempt to put artificial life into a software)..., such software That will continue to help, and also doom humans... |
. . . A software that creates another software. ...Writes the code, compiles it, and deploys it. |
kodewrita: Just to give you a hint before you click the link. The author advises giving developers a small project and then hiring them if they suceed in doing it and also suggests allowing them to finish it at their own pace too. Interesting viewpoint.wow!! ...the writer must be real intelligent fellow! Thanks a lot for the link Kodewrita. That's an awesome piece. I enjoyed it. |
ijeezlux: please programmers in the house i need your help. i have been trying for a very long time now to download c++ compiler but all to no avail. i have been to Google on several occasions but i could not download it. all the c++ compiler i saw online were not free. please where can i download free version of c++ compiler? please help me...That's odd.... Try http://www.codeblocks.org/downloads |
try my favorite OpenCV. www.opencv.org |
What is "clojure"? Well, will that same small line of code work on my friend's Blackberry? Android? my small Symbian S60? an S40? I have 70% doubt. I think Lisp is more applicable to Desktop and Server apps. Its really great to have shorter codes... "the shorter the primitive code, the better the productivity, the less you control resource". Personally, I am okay with Python as my 2nd Language... |
ciphoenix: *falls off palm tree laughing*bros... I hope you did not break some bones? As for me, I want one out! I did prefer watching Cartoon Network's *catch the pigeon* ...lest I make a heavy fall from a palm tree! |
ghostofsparta: You all sound seasoned, prolific and seem to be up to any coding task, then why haven't any of you attempted OSdev or discussed anything on OSdev on NL before ? I'm a rookie, fine! With a brilliant idea, trouble! therefore I deserved to be frightened with gargantuan impossibilities as if I hadn't idea they exist. Like I keep saying, its entirely different. I don't think I will be needing to learn ;":*##/"!$0“{%e¥])@$,/'I haven't tried developing an OS because I haven't seen the NEED for ME to build a General Purpose Operating System neither do I know of gadgets that are in need of installable OS. Frankly, there are dozens of other OSs apart from the ones you know... And are used for Vehicles, Ships, Airplanes... Assembly plants, Nuclear Reactors etc. But there are usually domain specific... propietery, and sometimes built from scratch. . . . . . |
This thread is Something off zeros and ones for programmers.... ----Theory: Geeks, Computer Hobbyists and Programmers hardly gets the girl quickly like other guys... True or False? Please is the above topic true --@least in the Nigerian environment.(oh, for the girls, I think they get the guy quickly) ...just random thoughts it this hypothesis is true, why? is there no programmatic way to handle this?? ...lol. Ohkay, seriously... I am experiencing such... (or maybe its only unique to me) and some movies I have watched geeky movies that kinda portray the same... --Your contributions--

sheyie2007: I plan integrating google's address autocomplete in one of my php projects. Resources from google search has not really helped, tutorial-wise. Is anybody familiar with it's use / how to implement it? your help will be really appreciated. thankskinda vague...but I think you meant search Autocompletion. I don't think Google would allow third party developers to directly make use of their auto completion engines.... So, the google type is not so feasible.... but there are walk arounds of cause... *the overly simplest can be found here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6428502/google-search-autocomplete-api +++NOw++++ *If you really want to do it professionally, you may have to use language and grammar models... with lots of error and statistical corrector and prediction systems... (this is easy, but , the better, the more difficult, and more server load) ...Well, I am a Natural Language Processing enthusiast.... so, I could help you out but I CANNOT in the next 2months because my Academics is my priority( since I fell out... been trying to migrate my CGPA back to the First level.. )---here are simple and basic tips: First of all, you gonna need some Ajax knowledge..(I dunno much on Ajax) Secondly, a backend that does the work. You need samples to serve as statistical models for a start so... to get some, you may have to type it and For every search, store it in your DB! ---next... just apply High School or Secondary School Statistics knowledge... ---nexti...(OPTIONAL) Apply a word correction system for each word typed --this is to correct mistakes such as "Nigerai" instead of "Nigeria" <<r1>> ---next... query where you stored previous searches with the "LIKE" in your SQL query to find similar matches and return the results! ---You can have an extra php script that should better refine this system for you. ---Use your intuition for the rest... You can come up with something good! believe it ---SImpLe!!!! <<r1>> <- : this is something I haven't had the time to continue... but, maybe you'll understand https://www.nairaland.com/1150055/simple-very-useful-word-sentence Though as soon as am done with this semester.... I will hammer Natural Language Processing well......!! so, till then... see ya!! God keep us till then. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Timothy. |
2buff: Hey my people.I doubt you are gonna find one easily... You sometimes have to go through the pain of compiling sources Why cross-compile? writing a cross-platform stuff on a single platform?? |
csharpjava: Sorry O, let the arguments continue............hahahaha!!! Now, this made me to fall off my chair laughing!!.... Having so much fun @this. Thumbs up to every poster here... |
I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THIS THREAD KEENLY.... And seriously its been epic!! And would still be following it. This drama is gona be cool! Cause the actors are, *An OP who is bent on writing an OS. *An audience who go berserk in discouraging him without even taking time to hear ALL THE IDEAS THAT IS ON HIS MIND... *the Gurus, Smarties, Programmers, blah blahh blahhhs who just try to point out impossiblities. *the people that are very much objective to the idea *the people who cannot explain the technical nits and grits of a simple hello world program... And yet have contributions to make regarding an OS!!... *impressive. *the people who can't write a VERY BASIC device driver or compiler... *the people that would surely exchange blows verbally :-) . *the spectators... *....add your own...!! ....reading this thread relaxes my brains! Keep it rolling. By the way I am VERY SURE that, UNIX based and DOS based OS wouldn't be the only types of INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH OS's in the next 30years.! |
why don't you suggest to your school or former school that you would volunteer to be the team's coach to start participating in programming competitions across India, Asia, and the renowned ICPC... #grounds to gain employment
