PoliticsRe: GEJ's CYBERCRIME BILL Allows FG To Spy On Nigerians - Death Sentence For Hackers by Whynotthetruth(m): 9:29pm On Feb 24, 2015
LRNZH:
This is GEJ using the other hand to withdraw the FOI bill he took credit for, probably in a reaction to the exposition of his weakness and corruption due to this elections.
Once gov't starts to actively spy on its citizenry, freedom is no longer in existence. Judging by the way GEJ and indeed other African leaders misuse power, this law will be used to witchhunt media houses and ordinary citizens on social media (think Nairaland etc).
My suspicion is that the paedophile part of the law is to window dress the spying part of the bill to create an appeal.
It is a bad law in general. How much hacking goes on in Nigeria? This is not even really an anti yahoo-yahoo bill sef to make it more pertinent. It is a shame GEJ's priorities are misplaced once again. He should have been pushing the legislature to pass more important bills like the PIB.
Nigerians should fight this bill before it is passed.

Most times, the urge to insult GEJ pushes most of you to expose how half-baked you are...
Just read what you wrote here and point out the correlation with the main post...
What's wrong in monitoring anyone's electronic devices especially in a "CRIMINAL CASE INVESTIGATION" as pointed out in the billhuh
What is really wrong with chaps like you...Is it just hatred or frustration or what exactly?
Criticizing without comprehension or even reading at all...pele

I am yet to see where you thanked GEJ for FOI...which Fashola and other APC states refused to domesticate...
What are they hiding since they are progressives, saints and not criminals or corrupt digital lootershuh

I think you should read your own comment and not muddle things up.

For effective result, you should pursue PREVENTIVE STRATEGIES than allow a problem to fester and then providing a cure. You may be overwhelmed with the problem at hand after it has occurred. Every responsible manager pursues preventive strategies and does all they can possibly do to avoid problems.

I can give you two examples.

As a bank manager, you do not just go and start giving people loans even when they have verifiable collateral. What's most important is the business for which the loan will be applied. And businesses have a viability measure. That's where Risk Management comes in.

Two. You can have a stock of perishable foods in your store house. The rats will definitely love to come around for free lunch. You can kill as many as you want. But if an 'imported' rats comes into that same store, it'll do the same thing. So to you, what will be your solution? For me, I'll ensure my barn is well PROTECTED. This is where strengthening institutions comes in.

That's the reason why killing mosquitoes will neither end nor reduce malaria spread. But taking preventing measures like avoiding stagnant water, keeping your environment clean, etc will PREVENT the spread of malaria. If mosquitoes don't have a place to breed, malaria won't have the opportunity to spread.

Coming to CCTV installation and speed trackers, the idea is not to 'prevent' crimes or high speed racing but actually to catch these law breakers. Like the trap and poison would do to the rats in my example above.

Then to Government's effort at preventing corruption, the use of technology like you said is playing an excellent role. Thieves are attracted to something that has value. In this case money. You keep a thief and money together, you know the consequences. Bring all the thieves together and use one as a scapegoat. Then put these thieves and the money together and see what will happen. Like rats, they will steal.

A thief always believes that he can always find a new way of stealing without being caught. Technology is like the wall.

Have you also noted that 'curing' a disease do come with some side effects?
God bless

Did I claim to be "intelligent"? I was just stating the obvious. New Zealand that you referred to punishes offenders and that acts as a deterrent to others who may be contemplating crime. For the avoidance of doubt, deterrence means "prevention". Let me give you an example, having speed cameras alone on highways does not stop people from over speeding but people are cautious because when they over speed, they expect a ticket or fine with pictures delivered to their address.

Now, how many crimes have been solved with the Abuja CCTV? It was installed as a means of using technology to prevent crime but Boko Haram has carried out at least two bombings in areas in Abuja that I am sure has CCTV cameras and we are yet to see footage of the bombings or the vehicles that carried out the bombings. If the same Nigerian government that implemented these ideas is the same that will carryout the electronic anti corruption measures, I don't think it is out of place to point out the potential loopholes/failings of the system. And the question is while we wait for the full implementation of the system, should we allow the rogues to continue roaming the streets and enjoying their ill gotten wealth?
Guy, reason with me and leave politics aside for a while.
Bro, From your own example, the speed camera is a preventive measure which is part of what GEJ is preaching. It stops the "majority" from the crime. While the punishment therein will now help to check the recalcitrant "few" who may still fail to obey.

You; buhari and APC has no NEW IDEA in the fight against corruption. You're telling us that you will jail corrupt officials. This your technique is not only archaic but inefficient as has been proven right in the fight against armed robbers and kidnappers.

What do we do now? We have to go with GEJ who has a novel idea that tends to run a "cashless government". Wherein the corrupt government official doesn't see any money at all talk more of the one he will steal or loot. This is classical case of crime prevention. Being proactive like GEJ not reactive like buhari. We're in digital age bro not analogue. This is the more reason why buhari can't rule now. Nigeria is far beyond his thinking faculty now.

Finally, we are in democracy now not military. GEJ is executive which is different from judiciary and legislature. Anybody from Atiku, Jagaban, Mbadinuju, Saraki, FFk etc remains free, innocent & true citizen until proven otherwise by court of competent jurisdiction. You don't expect GEJ to send EFCC after anyone the media or APC tags corrupt or to jail them...

Why is she asking and answering the questions herself? Why are the questions not thought provoking?
Goat and yam analogy - Seriously? If you know that that when you steal you are definitely going to be punished, doubt most people will deep their hands into the treasury knowing that they are likely to be caught. There are still ways of circumventing the IT systems even though I admit it makes it more difficult (theoretically). If the people that operate the system still have the same mind-set, there's nothing that stops them from manipulating the system to loot our collective wealth and this time it is going to be more difficult to detect.
It pains me when some of you folks who claim to be intelligent end up proving the opposite.
If your system & style of fight against corruption which unfortunately is championed by Buhari is right and fool-proof; why do we still have armed robbers & kidnappers even with all the jail terms and executionshuh

Why not Google great and noble countries like New Zealand to see how their country runs; which curtails corruption to barest minimum. Technology as championed GEJ is simply their little secret. GEJ is for prevention while Buhari is for cure. And we all know that; "prevention is better than cure". Stop the crime from even taking place at all, not mere media drama in the name of fighting corruption...

Strong institutions not strong individuals bro, gets the job done. Forget all these your Adolf Hitler cult-like following of buhari.

Get informed before criticising or maintain some dignified silence bro...

Well, we have no choice but to appreciate continuity because I don't see change powered by the same people that pummeled Nigeria into a state of uncertainty between 1999 and 2007/10. They all can't continue to hide behind the integrity of Buhari to force their way into power. Change comes from a genuine heart and not by rhetorics
Amen bro...Sure, the man may have a golden heart but he can't operate with such shackles on him. GEJ just extricated himself from some of them, we expect him to move faster now with development... Buhari will first have to fight the battle of self-assertion in his government which is most likely to be hijacked by these folks funding him now...And the corruption he wants to fight is a hydra-headed monster which will NEVER be eliminated with prison terms...remember; all the armed robbers imprisoned and shot dead. Has it ever reduced the menace? Not at all....##Cure the cause not the effect##...Build strong institutions not strong individuals...
Also, separation of powers won't allow you to just impose your wish on people... it is democracy for sure...

A true patriot appreciates good policies and programs of government. What is going on in the manufacturing sector is not just welcoming, it should be encouraged by all and sundry, the call for sustenance of this policy should be made. Nigeria need to be the manufacturing hub of Africa. We have the human and capital resources, the political will is all that is needed. If Jonathan is showing the will, then the sky will be our starting point.
Sure, Jonathan is doing it...This was confirmed by foremost manufacturer; Sam Ohuabunwa of GEJ's intervention in their pharmaceutical manufacturing sector(first of its kind in Nigeria history)...I think for the first time, Nigeria is getting it right in terms of policy formulation by government(local content policy, backward integration policy; Obj started this but Jonathan blossomed it, automotive policy, industrial revolution master plan, etc) but I fear for continuity should GEJ give way....

PoliticsRe: Has President Jonathan Relinquished His Responsibilities? Who Is In-charge? by Whynotthetruth(m): 4:28pm On Feb 19, 2015
cashkid:
President Jonathan further insulted our collective intelligence when he said during his recent media chat that he was not consulted before the postponement was announced! So who is in charge? Does it mean the service chiefs will write letter to the National Security Adviser declaring that they cannot guarantee the security of citizens during the 24 hours voting period or a maximum of 48 hours of election period without the knowledge of their commander-in-chief? What came out of the president’s attempt to rationalise this major disaster is that he is a prisoner of vested interests who are using him to fight dirty wars. Their common denominator is the fear of a Buhari presidency and the need to scuttle that from happening, by all means. And they are many.

There are those who have stolen the country dry and are therefore afraid of Buhari coming to power with his reputation and moral authority of fighting corruption. In this category are those who have been stealing money from the petroleum industry and not remitting sales into the Federation Account as required by law; those who have been stealing money outright from budgeted funds; those who stole pension funds and stopped retirees from getting their dues; those who have been stealing at state and local government levels; and those who have been sweeping under the carpet all the numerous probe reports running into trillions without properly recovering the funds and prosecuting the guilty.

There are those who are eternally afraid of Buhari for their fear of him for their past misdeeds and will never imagine a Buhari in power as long as they are alive. They have lost credibility at home and abroad; they are afraid of their shadows and live in eternal fear of even a lizard that falls down from the wall. They are afraid of being demystified but people are already tired of their antics. Like the old hyena which has lost its teeth, they can only salivate but cannot bite. They are left with only nocturnal conspiracies and daylight hypocrisies as they await their day of reckoning, which is fast approaching. It is an agenda within other agendas and layers and layers of webs of intrigues like the last fight in a tragicomic drama.

President Jonathan was tricked into fighting the battles of these people, but he should ask himself an honest question: why is Buhari so popular now after six years of the Jonathan administration? The answer is very clear: unprecedented insecurity; monumental corruption; general insensitivity; and mass poverty have been the lot of Nigerians under this administration and they are looking for a credible alternative which Buhari symbolises. To compound matters, Jonathan has appointed mediocre aides to take charge of state policy thereby reducing governance to a charade that it is now. The statements coming from government officials are always infantile, pedestrian and unpresidential.

How can anyone take Jonathan serious as a president when his main supporters are those who have sworn to dismember Nigeria and who do not even believe in Nigeria, such as Asari Dokubo? Consequently, as Tope Fasua wrote in Sunday Trust of February 15, 2015, “we have never seen such atrocious, acrimony-based campaign as the one he (Jonathan) is currently using the commonwealth to pay for, directly or indirectly. Neither Obasanjo nor Yar’Adua, nor their supporters were this vicious, this careless, this bloodthirsty”.

Jonathan and those using him must remember that they can delay but can never stop the change that is coming to this country. The people of the Niger Delta must know that their enemies are not the rest of Nigerians who do not have oil in their backyards, but those in charge of their wealth and the fat over-pampered pigs who call themselves militants who feed fat in their name. The budget of Bonny Local Government in the Niger Delta is more than the annual budget of many non-oil producing states but the poverty rate in Bonny is definitely higher than that of those states. In addition, the physical development in those states with the meager resources cannot be compared with that of the oily Bonny. These are the questions they should ask.

Those who are using Jonathan in their proxy wars must remember that there is overwhelming consensus for change as over 70 percent of Nigerians, including the international community are ready for a new government after the failed policies of the Jonathan administration. If they really love Jonathan they should have started advising him to prepare for free, fair and credible election; prepare for his exit strategy and safe landing; and prepare to be forgiven of all his mistakes and sins as long as he can respect the wishes of the people of Nigeria; or prepare for a disgraceful defeat. The choice is with President Jonathan and with Nigerians.

As Mr. Fasua concluded in that same article “How an incumbent hopes to owe salaries and contractors, sometimes puny amounts, spend trillions on elections, condone corruption, surround himself with extremists, approve the airing of the most divisive and distasteful of campaign videos, have no cogent plan about reforming the future of our economy, declare austerity on the people, take on the international community who put him there, expect Nigerians to keep operating as a zoo, and win elections, remains to be seen. The odds are totally against him and six weeks of divisiveness will be nothing”.

Already the ruling party is no more the largest party. The APC is now the largest party in Africa and that is why the PDP is afraid of elections. The circumstances are also different since the PDP is in total crisis and going into elections with less than 30% rating. As Wole Olaoye wrote this week in Daily Trust, “Doyin Okupe, SSA to the President who had earlier compared Jonathan to Jesus Christ, went berserk in his anti-Buhari propaganda. Instead of promoting Jonathan his boss, his strategy was to denigrate the person of the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Buhari. ‘Gen. Buhari is not electable and would not be elected by the grace of God. And why I am saying that is this, Nigeria would not have a president that has not gone to school. This is not going to happen. In Nigeria, it will not happen. Buhari will not be president!’”

“The journalists were scandalized. As Okupe ranted on, they rose in unison and chorused APC! APC!! APC!!! Disgraced but not embarrassed (Okupe is beyond embarrassment because he was not at home on the day God distributed that capacity) he waddled his way out of the venue. That this was happening right within the State House spoke volumes about the extent to which the present administration has alienated the public with its lies and hate”, Olaoye concluded. History is on the side of the oppressed.
