Education / Nlc, Tuc And Ulc Gives Fg Deadline To Submit Minimum Wage Report To Nass by Wiki9ja: 8:33pm On Dec 20, 2018
The organised labour on Thursday said that the Federal Government has latest Dec. 31 to send the tripartite committee report on N30,000 minimum wage to the National Assembly.

According to NAN, the three labour centres, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (ULC) took the decision after a joint meeting in Lagos.
The organiseed labour gave the ultimatum following President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that a “high powered technical committee” would be set up to device ways to ensure that its implementation did not lead to an increase in the level of borrowing.

The NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, who address newsmen after the meeting, said that setting up a technical committee could not be a condition for passing the minimum wage report to the National Assembly.
Accoridng to Wabba, the organised labour cannot guarantee industrial peace and harmony in the country if the wage report was not passed for implementation on or before Dec. 31.
“We reject in its entirety the plan to set up another `high powered technical committee’ on the minimum wage. It is diversionary and a delay tactics.

“The national minimum wage committee was both technical and all-encompassing in its compositions and plan to set up a technical committee is alien to the tripartite process.

“It is also alien to the International Labour Organisations’ conventions on national minimum wage setting mechanism,’’ he said.
The labour leader said that issues on payment of minimum wage was a law that was universal, citing that other African countries like, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa had increased their minimum wage this year.
“If you increase minimum wage, you are increasing the purchasing power of the economy which will help to reduce inflation rather than increase it,’’ Wabba said.

Wabba urged workers to be vigilant and prepare to campaign and vote against candidates and politicians who are not willing to implement the new minimum wage.

Politics / Alex Badeh's Death : Senate Urged Security Offices To Disentangle assassination by Wiki9ja: 5:17pm On Dec 20, 2018
The upper chamber of the National Assembly, Thursday, urged the federal government to unravel the circumstances surrounding the assassination of former Chief of Defence staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (retd).

The Senate also urged the security agencies to search and rescue the personal staff of the slain Air Force Chief held hostage by the assailants.

The call by the Senate was sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Binta Masi Garba (Adamawa North) and co-sponsored by Senator Bala Na’Allah (Kebbi south).

Garba recalled that “Badeh retired in July 2015 in line with military tradition a pulling-out parade was held at the Mogadishu cantonment Abuja where Air Chief Marshal Badeh gave his valedictory speech before proceeding to his home state”.

She however regretted that the late Chief of Defence staff died from gunshot wounds sustained when his vehicle was attacked while returning from his farm alongside his driver while one of his personal staff is still held hostage by the assailants.

In his contribution, Senator Shehu Sani, who lamented that the killing was an addition to the cases of unresolved assassination, warned that the state must take the issue very seriously.

He said: “Badeh served his country from the beginning to the end, meritoriously. It is sad that he is a victim of assassination. He was killed few kilometers from the state capital. The state has failed Badeh. We should take the issue of security serious. He is a victim of an assasination.

“This should bring to light a national discourse. If this can happen to Alex Badeh, it can happen to anybody. It is an addition to the cases of unresolved assassination. The state must take this issue very seriously. We owed him a duty to ensure that such a thing never happen again. The security agencies should deploy necessary security technologies to fish out the killers.”

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, in his contribution, lamented that the killer, like the case of Bola Ige and others, might never be found.

He said: “The killers might never be found because this is not the first time we would have such incidence. The time has come for us to ensure that assassins are found.

“Abuja, the FCT is becoming unsafe for the residents. We must ensure that all the CCTV are working in memory of Badeh and ensure that the killers are found.”

Ruling on the debate, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki said, “we need to do more in the area of security. Necessary measures must be taken to ensure that lives and properties are protected.

Education / ASUU Strike: INEC Describe Strike As Threat Over 2019 Elections by Wiki9ja: 1:48pm On Dec 20, 2018
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decried the lingering strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing it as a threat to its preparations for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on Gender Sensitive Reporting of Elections on Thursday in Abuja, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Barrister Festus Okoye, said over 70% of the ad hoc staff requirement for the elections, was drawn from students of federal tertiary institutions.

“The lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will no doubt have serious impact on the preparations for the conduct of the 2019 elections.

“It is therefore important that students of federal tertiary institutions should and must be in school at least a month before the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“They are one critical resource and their absence will have adverse effects on the ad hoc staff requirement of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC,” Okoye stated.

Politics / Senator Ben Bruce Attacks Buhari Ahead Of Appropriation Bill Presentation by Wiki9ja: 11:09am On Dec 19, 2018
The lawmaker representing Bayelsa East senatorial district in the upper chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of today’s presentation of the 2019 appropriation bill.

According to him, after the presentation of the “budget of hope” last year, things turned worse for Nigerians.

President Buhari will today present the 2019 budget to a joint session of the National Assembly and Ben Bruce has said he has “very little tolerance for budgets with big names and little impact on the people”.

He tweeted, “Last year, President @MBuhari declared a ‘Budget of Recovery and Hope’ and three months later Nigeria was declared the world headquarters for extreme poverty.

“So today, I have very little tolerance for budgets with big names and little impacts.”

Politics / PDP Cries Out Over Plan To Remove Saraki With Police, DSS by Wiki9ja: 10:05pm On Dec 18, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised an alarm over a fresh plot to use the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to forcefully remove Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, from office.

In a statement issued by Kola Ologbondiyan, its National Publicity Secretary, in Abuja, the party also condemned in totality, “the continued clampdown, harassment, intimidation, arrest and detention” of members of the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration.

According Ologbondiyan, the plot against Saraki, “which is akin to the last invasion of the National Assembly by anti-democratic forces, is to scuttle the success being recorded by the PDP Presidential campaign organisation in its consultations and winning campaigns across the nation ahead of the 2019 general election.”

The PDP said that it is privy to clandestine meetings by the Buhari Presidency and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which it observed, has not been able to constitute a Presidential campaign organisation, but keen to derail the PDP Presidential campaign by going against Senator Saraki.

The statement added: “Part of the plot is to use the police and the DSS to fabricate spurious charges against Senator Saraki, distract him and destabilize the PDP Presidential campaign, a scheme the PDP described as dead on arrival, as Nigerians are solidly behind the PDP in the mission to rescue the nation from the misrule of the APC.”

Politics / 2019: Doyin Okupe Challenges APC, List 43 Achievements Of PDP by Wiki9ja: 10:56am On Dec 18, 2018
Doyin Okupe, a former aide to ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan, has listed the achievements of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, administration for 16 years.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has widely criticised and blamed PDP for problems experienced in the country.

But reacting, Jonathan, in a statement by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, said the former president should not be blamed for the failure of Buhari to appoint ministers early enough in the life of his government.

Reacting to supposed blame game by APC, Okupe took to his Twitter page to release forty-three (43) achievements of the PDP administration.

He further urged APC administration to list its achievements and make a comparison.
