The leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, was today arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic. A statement by his lawyer, Festus Keyamo, said Dokubo was picked up by the police between 1:00pm and 2:00pm around the Lubeleyi roundabout, and taken to an unknown destination. The wealthy former militant reportedly opened a private university in the Benin Republic, the King Amachree African University that is preparing to start degree- awarding programmes in 2014. “We want to emphasise that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now,” Keyamo said in his statement. “In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country. All these places have been searched as at this evening and nothing incriminating was found.” He suggested that Dokubo’s arrest and detention may be a ploy by “certain forces in Nigeria in unholy alliance with the Beninoise government” to keep his client away as 2015 approaches. “We call on the Nigerian government to immediately intervene and ensure that no harm befalls Alhaji Dokubo- Asari and to use all diplomatic means to secure his immediate release and safe return to Nigeria,” he said. Dokubo has in recent times vowed that unless Mr. President Jonathan retains the presidency in 2015, Nigeria would break up. http://mobile.saharareporters.com/news-page/asari-dokubo-arrested-benin-republic |

In what may sound like a retraction of his earlier declaration that he would only extend invitations to U-17 players after they would have graduated through the ranks, Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has said that he intends to call up a few of the U17 World Cup winning players to the Super Eagles in preparation for next year’s CHAN tournament. There have been widespread calls within Nigeria that members of the U-17world cup winning team be drafted into the Super Eagles ahead of the world cup. In an exclusive interview with supersport.com at the Hilton Cobham hotel where the Nigerian team based following the friendly with Italy, coach Stephen Keshi has been speaking on a variety of issues including the availability of the Eaglets. “I watched them during their tournament and I did mention that I liked a few of the players and of course I will like to take a closer look at them. So the plan is to invite them to the training programme for next year’s CHAN and monitor them”. The Afcon winning coach is careful to temper the expectations of the public with regards to these players. “People need to understand that even though they won their tournament, it does not mean they are ready to play for the senior teams immediately. Like I keep saying, I am on the lookout for those players that will improve the present squad so these U-17 boys will get the first crack at it. I will be pleased if one or two step up their game and make it” It will be recalled that 20 years ago, as Nigeria prepared for a first world cup appearance, then head coach Clemens Westerhof gave caps to the then U-17 world cup winners Karibe Ojigwe and Kanu Nwankwo in friendlies but they did not make the final squad to the USA based tournament of 1994. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/eaglets-get-super-eagles-call-ups/ |
MT Algerian authorities have said 12 people died and more than 200 were injured in celebrations after the country's football team qualified for next year's World Cup in Brazil. Five fans were killed when their van slid off a road east of Algiers, four died in a car accident in Biskra and three people died in other towns. Residents described reckless behaviour during celebrations though the night. The Desert Foxes beat Burkina Faso 1-0 on Tuesday in Blida to qualify. The aggregate score was 3-3 over the two-legged tie but Algeria went though on the away goals rule. |
