Deaths recorded, many quarantined North Central states of Nasarawa and Taraba have been hit by the dreaded Lassa fever, causing panic in neighboring states, as many deaths have been recorded and scores hospitalised. In Nasarawa state, no fewer than two patients with confirmed cases were admitted at Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Dash, Lafia. The situation was a lot worse in bordering Taraba state where government medical officials confirmed the death of at least one person from Lassa fever with many quarantined. Nasarawa state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Iya, who confirmed the development to newsmen at a press briefing yesterday, revealed that the victims, an 18-year old student and a 34-year old man, were brought to the specialist hospital on 21st and 24th December last year respectively. He informed that the patients were still alive and receiving treatment, noting that all their contacts had been identified and placed on surveillance. The commissioner further disclosed that the state government had commenced public enlightenment campaigns to inform and educate the public on the dangers of the disease, adding that plans were on top gear to sensitize health workers at the primary and secondary levels in the state to improve on their index of suspicion. He called on the general public to avoid panic as the disease was not airborne. “One of the ways of contacting the disease is by coming in contact with body fluids such as blood, stool, urine and vomiting of the infected person.” Taraba outbreak Taraba state government reported an outbreak of Lassa fever early yesterday, calling on the people to be more hygienic in their daily endeavours. According to the state Commissioner of Health, Innocent Vakkai, one person has been confirmed dead while two other persons have been kept in for observation. He said: “One person died and two others quarantined and their blood samples have already been taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State for further confirmation.” Vakkai however said that the state government had responded to the outbreak quickly and therefore urged the public not to panic. He explained how the fever spreads, noting: “People usually get infected with the Lassa Virus after exposure to infected rodents, while person to person transmission occurs through direct contact with the sick person. “Other precautionary measures include putting food in rodent proof containers and wearing protections such as masks, gloves, gowns among others,” he added. The commissioner further urged anyone who witnesses nasal bleeding as well as bleeding through the anus and mouth to the nearest hospital as they are among the symptoms of the fever. History According to Wikipaedia, Lassa fever or Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LHF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus and first described in 1969 in the town of Lassa, in Borno State, Nigeria. Similar to Ebola, clinical cases of the disease had been known for over a decade, but had not been connected with a viral pathogen. Outbreaks of the disease have been observed in Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and the Central African Republic. The primary animal host of the Lassa virus is the Natal multimammate mouse, an animal found in most of sub-Saharan Africa. The virus is believed to be transmitted by contact with the feces or urine of animals accessing grain stores in residences. Given its high rate of incidence, Lassa fever is a major problem in affected countries. Signs and symptoms https://nigerianpilot.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/lasa.jpg Experts posit that the fever accounts for up to one-third of deaths in hospitals within the affected regions and 10 to 16% of total cases. After an incubation period of six to 21 days, an acute illness with multiorgan involvement develops. Nonspecific symptoms include fever, facial swelling, and muscle fatigue, as well as conjunctivitis and mucosal bleeding. The other symptoms among many more arising from the affected organs are: vomiting (bloody), diarrhea (bloody), stomach ache, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), hepatitis, cough, chest pain, unilateral or bilateral hearing deficit, seizures Clinically, Lassa fever infections are difficult to distinguish from other viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola and Marburg, and from more common febrile illnesses such as malaria. - See more at: http://nigerianpilot.com/lassa-fever-hits-nasarawa-taraba/#sthash.94AtGSSP.dpuf |

The All Progressive Congress (APC) has won all the Chairmanship positions in the Saturday's local council election in the state. The Chairman of the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZSIEC), Alhaji Garba Muhammad said on Sunday in Gusau that all the candidates of the party in the 14 councils had met all the provisions of the electoral law and had been declared winners of the election in their respective councils. He said 14 political parties including Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) participated in the election. The PDP, however, in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Nasiha on eve of the election, said it was boycotting the election. The party also said since it was still challenging the election of the Gov Abdulaziz Yari at the Supreme Court, it would, therefore, not participate in the election. Muhammad commended all stakeholders, including security agencies, for ensuring the success of the election. (NAN) http://nigerianpilot.com/apc-sweeps-zamfara-lg-council-polls/ |

Kashim Shettima gave this indication on Saturday when he visited some villages to assess damage done to the communities by insurgents. God willing; we will defeat them (insurgents),'' Shettima said. Overwhelmed by the recent turn of events around him , the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (Rtd), has opened up on how he facilitated the victory of the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate President Muhammadu Buhari. at the May 28 presidential polls against that of his then boss former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. “I gave my best for this transition, which led to the victory of the opposition over the ruling party”, Dasuki said Dasuki, who was placed under house arrest between Thursday evening and Friday afternoon by operatives of the Department of State Security Services, DSS, said he intentionally turned blind eye to breaches and actions of the opposition APC against the administration of former President Jonathan, because he wanted to be “fair to all as NSA”. Dasuki who was retained in office by Buhari more than one month after the Jonathan’s administration that appointed him left the presidential villa, was sacked last week Tuesday. According to Dasuki he “had security cause to act on some issues” but opted not to do what he should have done and that inaction on his part led to the victory of President Buhari in the March 28 presidential election. “I was fair to all as NSA. Even when I had security cause to act on some issues, inflammatory comments and actions against the government of the day by those in the opposition, I exercised restraint. I did not restrict anyone’s movement, I never asked security agent to occupy anybody’s house. Well, from the grapevine, she is the new departmental accountant. Fortunately, she sits just meters away from you. You can hear her rustle papers, say hello to colleagues, and being addressed by her team lead. As typical of guys, their antenna starts picking different signals from the lady. In other words, they are skimming on how to ask the new girl out. Relationships have largely changed as you can meet anyone anywhere. However, when two individuals in a romantic relationship sit opposite each other in an office, it may be a recipe for disaster. While some organizations bar office dating, others overlook it. Either way, here are five reasons why you should avoid office romance. No liberty to indulge Some people are groovy and animate that they cannot stick with a single woman. Although, they are not Casanovas, they do not have the nerve to be with one. They want to interact with other office ladies, take them out for dinner without anyone watching them. If you are in an office relationship, you may not be opportune to engage in any of these extramural relationship activities. In fact, you may leave office together every day. So, where is the freedom? Jealousy Jealousy kills a relationship faster than a bullet. He is staring at you when you are chatting with another guy while she is miffed when you hug a coworker. Except you have a thick skin, stay away from office romance. Can easily lose its spice Being in love is as sweet as honey. But what kind of love will you be professing when you see your lover every day of the week from 8 am to 5 pm? Unless both of you can make concerted efforts to spice up the relationship, you will be saying your goodbyes pretty soon. But, if one of you can leave the company for the other in the nigh future, you can attempt it. Stupid moments can make both of you stupid Since you are dating a coworker, you have to embrace stupid and awkward moments as well as embarrassments that come with office dating. Like the motto of the Boy Scout-Be prepared. Importantly, do not lose it when the stupid moments are unfolding. You just have to swallow it. Motivation for the relationship Before venturing into any relationship, especially an office one, ask yourself, what is the motivation? Sex, promotion or ego? Surprisingly, both genders are liable when questions are raised about relationship motivations. Whether the reasons are right or wrong, this can generate gossips, foster distrust and dissatisfaction. factional Speaker of Kogi House of Assembly, on Monday reaffirmed the position of 17 members that the embattled speaker, Alhaji Momoh-Jimoh Lawal remains impeached. Addressing newsmen in Lokoja, Osiyi said that the impeachment, carried out on Dec. 10 during plenary, through the resolution of the 17-member-signatories still stood. He said that contrary to insinuations from different quarters, the impeachment of Lawal (PDP-Okene II) was not influenced by anyone. According to him, the impeachment is premised on six grounds arising from general feeling of discontentment among members. ``This includes gross incompetence and lack of capacity and confidence to preside over the proceedings of the 6th Assembly. Lawal’s sins, Osiji added, also include insensitivity to members’ interest and plight and misrepresentation between the Assembly and the Executive for his personal interests and aggrandizement. Others, he said, were mismanagement of Assembly funds and other valuable resources and betrayal of trust members reposed on him. He also listed Lawal’s offence to include high-handedness in the administration of the Assembly “as he operates like a sole administrator.” In his defence, Lawal said that though he was not opposed to the impeachment, it ought to have followed due process. http://nigerianpilot.com/kogi-assembly-crisis-lawal-remains-impeached-factional-speaker/

Prof. AbdulHafiz Oladosu of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, has called on world leaders not to judge Islam from the negative attitude of some Muslims. Oladosu made the call at the formal opening of the 100th edition of the Annual Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) held at IVC permanent site, kilometre 30, Lagos/Ibadan Express way. At the event, organised by Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Southern Zone, the Don said that the misbehaviour of some Muslims should not be used as the basis for judging what Islam really stood for. ``It's not Islam that should be held responsible for the misbehaviour of some Muslims. ``The same way you don't hold a car responsible when it has an accident; you need to question the driver and owner of the car. ``Allah gave the religion of Islam to the Muslims; it is we the Muslims that are misrepresenting the gift from Allah. ``The world should try to read about Islam and not about Muslims,’’ Oladosu said. He called on Muslims to find their way back to the teachings of Islam so as not to allow the public to stigmatise Islam as a religion of trouble makers rather than religion of peace. In his remark, Malam Muhammad Jameel, National President of MSSN, urged the Federal Government to disregard the banning of Islamic dress in the name of security as such would lead to denial of fundamental right to practice one's religion. He also called on government to urgently address the myriad of problems facing the country. ``It is pertinent to call on our leaders to make concerted efforts to cushion the harsh socio-economic and education realities of today. ``These range from poverty, inflation, fuel scarcity to falling standard of education, among others,’’ Jameel said. Highlights of the occasion were the recitation of the Holy Qur’an and presentation of award of appreciation to dignitaries for their contributions to the development of the MSSN and Islam. Those given the awards include; the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar; the Executive-Secretary of Muslim Ummah of South Western Nigeria, Prof. Daud Noibi, and the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Nomadic Education, Prof. Rashid Aderinoye. Others are; Alhaji Kunle Sanni, Chairman, Oyo State Muslim Community; Dr Daud Amoo-Alaga, a renowned Islamic preacher, and Malam Yusuf Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), among others. A right to exist: The stateless Syrian children Syrian refugees who give birth in Lebanon struggle to secure a legal identity for their children. In the damp, dimly lit cement room she now calls home, Dina sits cross-legged on a flat cushion, listlessly fumbling with the hem of her robe. Gaunt, sombre, and dressed in a plain black abaya, the 37-year-old mother of six is exhausted. Like many Syrians of her generation, Dina was forced to flee to Lebanon from a country where she once felt safe, but which is now engulfed in civil war. In Syria, she lived near a UNESCO world heritage site, the medieval Krak des Chevaliers castle. In Lebanon, she shares a single room with her family in Wadi Jamous, an agricultural area to the north of the country's second city, Tripoli. After two-and-a-half years as refugees, her family is "tired, very tired", Dina says. "The situation is hard for myself, for my kids, for my husband," she continues. "We have nowhere to go.
