I checked my submitted my application for EMU on the 20th of October, I just checked my application portal now and saw that I got accepted by the IGSR today, although I haven’t gotten any mail from the university not even when I submitted my application. What are the next steps for me to take?

The university will send you email on steps and procedures to take.

Hello wip
I commend you for your humanitarian assistance to helpless masses
Welldone

But pls....Can a 33 year Old registered nurse with about 10yrs of experience study medicine in Cyprus?
. ..,

Thank you.

Although the undergraduate age limit in Cyprus is 25-27 years, being a registered nurse with verifiable work experience, some universities may want to waive the limitation. So it may be possible if all the documents and CV are presented; the tuition is 15-20,000$/year.

Considering the cost and the adopted USLME and PLAB training protocols in South American medical universities; I will rather suggest the 33-year-old registered nurse with 10 years of experience to take the medical studies in South America Universities. They also have an age limit, however, such a student can be admitted into 4 years doctor of medicine (MD) program with possible clinical rotations in the USA, Caribbean, Asia etc. The tuition fee a year here ranges from 11-14,000$.

Good day Sir. Please will the admission still be open for CIU on February 16? I plan on applying then since my fees will be complete by then.

Hello,

Remember studying abroad means paying tuition fees, accommodation, living, and maintenance expenses. If you are certain you will have all the mentioned fees+expenses that will cover you 1-2 years of studies by Feb, then you can apply before then and make payment by Feb 16th. If you don't have all the mentioned fees, just relax till you have it or get the necessary sponsorship.

Can I fly through OK to board since, by that time, I won't be able to process the visa in time?
OKTB has rules determined largely by the airline, so a traveler will need to abide by that rule at the time of flying which I don't know what rule will apply in Feb. Take note, OKTB often more expensive, and the previous rule demand you have a return ticket and the cost of processing the OKTB is not fixed but depends on who processes it.

And also, if I fly via oktb, when I arrive on the island, will I be issued a student visa immediately after my fees are confirmed or will I be asked to go through the normal visa process there also (providing documents like bank statement, yellow card and so on)?

When you arrive in Cyprus as a student either through OKTB or a Turkish transit visa, students need to complete their registration with the university then apply for a student residency permit (meaning you are not going to apply for any student visa as the permit allows you to stay according to its validity) which is currently renewable yearly. You don't need a bank statement or yellow card to do that, for the residency permit; all applicants apply online and submit medical test results and follow the rest of the procedure.

I hope that answers your queries.

Shalom, wip7

I am currently applying for Commonwealth PhD scholarship with the research topic, Exploring the practice of self-determination in informal caregiving for older adults in Nigeria. Do you think it is rather localised to be considered? Although, in the application process, it has been asked loosely how my proposed study contribute to global, national and local development.

Do you think I should take out any proposed information that makes it suggestive of a study to be done in Nigeria?

TIA.

Like I explained to the earlier poster; Ph.D. Research should not be rigid not to allow wider usage. Unless specified; your research should provide solutions that can be adapted or apply to local, national, and international challenges considering the input parameters on each case.

You know that Electricity is at the heart of many modern technologies; consider these researchers like William Gilbert and Benjamin Franklin who conducted extensive research on electricity; these people are English and if their research can only be used in the USA or UK; means only those two countries will have electricity.

Take note: it does not mean you can’t use Nigeria or any county, city, or group as case studies.
For instance, I collaborated with a molecular biologist who is very interested in beta-thalassemia and sickle cell anemia (HbS) diagnosis in his community because many of his people suffer from this.

Beta thalassemias (β thalassemias) are a group of inherited blood disorders. Children with beta-thalassemia may not show any symptoms at birth but usually develop them in the first 2 years of life. People with beta-thalassemia major may have serious health problems, like bone deformities and broken bone etc.

He is bringing his many years of experience working at NIH USA while we combined it with my skills in building portable electrochemical detection systems for prenatal diagnosis of beta-thalassemia . All the parents we focused comes from his community, meaning this research is purely designed for a particular community. This device will be able to detect the biomarkers from the blood and am working on integrating AI for prediction, this will help health and marriage counseling centers. However, even the data we are collecting is community-based, our device can work universally since the biomarker is not local. Meaning, this same device would work in Nigeria, Argentina, or any country. So that's how research should be done.....data can be local but solutions should be reproducible, usable, and adaptable to local, national, and international climes.

I hope this helps.

Happy new year!

Artificial intelligence solves Schrödinger's equation

The Schrödinger equation is a linear partial differential equation that describes the wave function of a quantum-mechanical system and its discovery was a significant landmark in the development of quantum mechanics that resulted in his Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933.

Up to now, it has been impossible to find an exact solution for arbitrary molecules that can be efficiently computed because Schrödinger's equation is complex. A team of scientists at Freie Universität Berlin has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) method for calculating the ground state of the Schrödinger equation in quantum chemistry. AI has transformed many technological and scientific areas, from computer vision to materials science.

The deep neural network designed by Professor Noé's team is a new way of representing the wave functions of electrons. "Instead of the standard approach of composing the wave function from relatively simple mathematical components, we designed an artificial neural network capable of learning the complex patterns of how electrons are located around the nuclei," Noé explains.

Compliments. Pl ease is the best way to send food stuff to my brother studying in EMU?

There are food stores in Cyprus both local and African food stores to buy, specifically in Famagusta where EMU is located. It will be costly for you to send and maybe seized at airports as they may need some tests done on the food samples which are required to be attached to the food. Let your brother buy the food in Cyprus, so send him the money to do that; otherwise you can give someone traveling to Cyprus the foodstuffs.

Hello Prof and colleagues,

Compliment of the season to everyone. Thanks for the contributions on this thread. I would appreciate if @wip7 and any other senior colleagues could look at my research proposal so as to guide me in the right direction. I am hoping to secure Doctoral place (Education) in Finland or Estonian. My topic is; E-Learning and Educational Administration in Nigeria Secondary Schools: A Study of the Nigerian Government’s Covid-19 Education Intervention.

Thanks again.

Firstly, I like to ask If you are applying for a specific, advertised research project, meaning the Ph.D. research project is already defined?

If the above is true; then your first point is to identify the supervisor that advertised the research topic and discuss your proposal informally to ensure it directly fits the intended interest and gain input on the scope, design, and feasibility of the proposal.

If the above is false, then I think this topic is very localized/nationalized if you are not applying for a specific, advertised Ph.D. research project.

For most of the supervisors like me; the first thing I check when I receive a Ph.D. research proposal is to check if the proposed research can be replicated/reproducible internationally or on a wider scale using the same input parameters. Will I be able to publish the results, observations, and trends in the research and making it reusable by almost anybody in another clime? If such a proposal does not fit this then I don't consider it.
You are going to Finland, your potential supervisor possibly a Finnish person and likely no nothing about Nigeria, and the government likely, not interested in funding such, also, during the Jury they may need to bring in many members that are conversant with your work to query your methods, results which becomes problematic etc.

Do you want to study a Ph.D. program for 3 to 5 years on the Nigerian Government’s Covid-19 Education Intervention?

In my opinion, you may consider changing your topic to something like "E-Learning and M-learning in a Developing Country: Implementation, Challenges, and Advances" This topic is not localized to Nigeria, the situation in Nigeria when it comes to e-learning is very similar to those in Burundi, Colombia, Chile, Kenya, Lebanon, Ghana etc......meaning your results, methods, observation, and recommendation will be very useful in these developing nations.

Also, any investor thinking of venturing into the e-learning business in these regions will find your work valuable, and also you stand a greater chance of being cited more than the earlier topic you proposed. It is possible for you to collaborate with key people in some of the countries you will get data from, understand their key challenges and your Ph.D. studies may find solutions to improving or solving these challenges...

That's my opinion..........!!

Best wishes

No, my school set a criteria that, hencforth no Journal will be accepted (for promotion) except University based Journals, meaning not based in polytechnics, colleges, research institutes etc. so how do i know if a particular journal is based in University in SCI or Scopus list
.

The majority of quality journals (traceable in WOS, Scopus, Clarivate; SCI/SCIE) are published by the well known publishers like Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis.

High percentage of these journals are owned by these publishers not by universities while some universities have moved their journals to their platforms and such will be named based on the university that owns it like Journal of Taibah University for Science, Journal of King Saud University - Science etc.

To find any journal index be it University, independently owned or publishers owned ....just go to clarivate website and type the journal full name or ISSN number you will see the actual information of it indexing.

Nairaland talks should not be the Yardstick for you to select a university as nearly 98% of comments on NL regarding universities in TRNC are made by random people most are mainly prospective students and some current students and agents. If it is not manageable or its an HIV, you will be deported but that's not the end of the world. Go and get the stuff done, no need to be terrified.

MIT funding for Faculty members in Africa

MISTI Global Seed Funds grant program promotes and supports early-stage collaborations between MIT researchers and their counterparts around the globe. Many of the joint projects funded lead to additional grant awards and the development of valuable long-term relationships between international researchers and MIT faculty and students.

The General Fund is open to projects in any country. Through an annual call for proposals, the fund primarily supports travel costs for exchange between a team at MIT and colleagues abroad.

The international colleague(s) must be identified in the proposal.
The maximum award is $30,000.

Priority will be given to projects that:
----propose a balanced exchange between the MIT and international participants
----demonstrate complementarity between the MIT and international teams
----involve undergraduate and graduate students

You need to contact the University, call the telephone number in the admission letter, find an email of their registrar, and let them renew the admission letter for 2021 Spring that's when you can apply for a visa for February 2021 because if the university does not send his details to an embassy he will not be able to get a visa and also his details must be updated with immigration even if you want to use OKTB.

So get that sorted.

Just published: Energy storage device from waste chicken bones (biocarbon)

The world energy crisis has been ignited by overconsumption and undue pressure on fossil fuel supplies. Researchers have directed concerted efforts on energy storage devices to curb this hazard. In recent years, as a competitive and powerful energy storage system, supercapacitors have attracted interest. Energy storage devices that fill the gap between batteries and traditional capacitors are supercapacitors (SCs). They can store and supply more power than capacitors at higher power outputs than batteries. Combined with high cyclability and long-term reliability, these features make SCs attractive energy storage devices.

Summary of Research: Waste chicken bones were collected, processed, and modified with heteroatoms to improve its efficiency. Various electrochemical tests were performed and nearly 2500 data generated were fed into artificial intelligence-based machine learning to study the performance and predict the energy density of the SC.

Researcher and Publication: Work was carried out alone by WIP7, some stability and recycling tests carried out with the commercial system developed for a start-up company that focuses on an electric bicycle. Results published in Materials Chemistry and Physics with a cite score of 4.9 and impact factor 3.4. This is a free journal of Elsevier. The university and Government pay 2800$ for publication incentive for this published work.

Hi. @wip7 please is it possible for a 39 year old to apply and study for a Bachelor's degree in North Cyprus?
Also what are the options for someone with a Bachelor's degree "Pass" to do Masters? Is there a PGD route to achieving that in any of the schools on the island?
Please reply as soon as possible. Thank you

The age limit for undergrad is maximum of 27 years.

I can't remember the system in Nigeria but I think a pass grade is less than a third class right? If yes, EMU only accepts 2.2 grade. While CIU is likely to accept such a person.

@wip7 Good day I really ur sincere and insightful advice and guidance.
I need ur sincere advise on this.
I am 35 married with a less than almost a year baby
I have a BSc. 2 1 Biochem currently working with a Pharmaceutical company as a QC Chemical Analyst with four concrete years experience. My wife hold Bsc. Eco(ed) 2 1 too. With a savings of 2M and some pos outlets. We are planning to move to Cyprus to study for MSc. And PhD. then move to Canada. How feasible is this for us and How can we go about our admission into a good school there and hope of survival to work there as well. It's really a tough decision. Pls kindly advise

Hi,

If your intention is to go to Canada, you can directly apply to Canada via the permanent residency route or via a university for a master's program. On average, a master's program in public universities will cost 5400 $ a year and mostly is 2 years program. This excludes accommodation and living expenses. Some of the unis have a number of graduate teaching/research opportunities available and your potential supervisor may have funding from their research grants for eligible students.

If you plan to come to Cyprus first. For a master program, EMU being reputable regarding research and international ranking may be suitable for you and your family, however, EMU does not offer a master program in Biochem and the average master program cost totally 6,700$ at EMU. You may be able to get a master's program in Biochem or related fields at Near east University which should cost you around 5000$ totally.

Financial implication:
If you are going to Canada as a family with a total of 2 Mill Naira (approx 5300$ currently) in a practical sense it will not be enough for studies... this is based on my personal experience anyway even though my province is cheaper over there and I don't have any intension to do crude/survival jobs but if you find such survival job there is legal time allowed for students to work that may limit your earning..... I personally can't say if that will be okay but if you have funding from the university will make better sense.

Also, for Cyprus. A total of 2 Mill Naira (approx 5300$ currently) will not be sufficient only for you alone as that is not enough to pay tuition fee, how about accommodation and living expenses? You may be able to get research funding or a Grad assistant position at the university even though it's competitive and may only cover a little.

My suggestion:

I will advise only you to start the academic journey (while your wife continues her business/job) and ensure you raise your current fund to double or more before embarking even if you get a scholarship. After arrival, you can understand things yourself, evaluate the expenses personally, and tally it with your current family need. After then you can make a decision for your wife to join you when you are stable and can support the family and move forward. Living a survival life abroad is kind of thermodynamically nonsensical to me; however, some prefer to live such a life....so you decide what life you want by the way. Some will tell you to pray over it and it will work out, that's non-spontaneous things to do; rather do proper maths and evaluate your chances based on your experience, skills, and available funds.

On a positive note, if you raise your finance and wish to come to Cyprus you can and start your master and at the same time start the Canadian PR journey and that can work concurrently since you already have work experience, by the time you end your master if that is already ready you can move or continue.

Best wishes
