Politics / Jimi Agbaje Speaks On ‘dumping’ PDP For APC by Wisdom58(f): 4:29pm On Jun 05, 2019
Oboagwina, media aide to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate in the 2019 elections in Lagos State, Mr Jimi Agbaje, has denied reports that his principal had dumped the opposition party.
Oboagwina told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that social media posts that Agbaje had left the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) were untrue.

NAN reports that the posts that Agbaje had joined APC have featured prominently on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook in the past few days.

One of the posts sighted by a NAN on WhatsApp and Facebook on Wednesday read “Lagos PDP finally emptied as Jimi Agbaje defects to APC’’.

It was also reported that former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George, on Wednesday disclosed that the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State in the last election, Jimi Agbaje, appears to have joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.

George also revealed that Agbaje failed in the last election because ‘he thinks he knows it all’, adding that it was Lagos people who worked against him.

He said that Agbaje originally come from the APC and had been part of the ruling party in the state from the beginning.
Reacting, Oboagwina described the reports as fake news, saying they were figments of the imaginations of the authors.
He said that Agbaje was still very much in the PDP and that there was no way he could have joined APC on social media.

“There is nothing like that, nothing like that at all. He is still in PDP; he has not defected.

“How can people say he has defected on social media? He is too big for that; he is in PDP,” Oboagwina said.

When asked if there were plans by his principal to dump the PDP for the APC, he answered in the negative.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Muslim Ummah to continue to imbibe the spirit, virtues and lessons of Ramadan in rededicating themselves to the task of nation-building.

Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC National Publicity Secretary gave the advice in a statement to NAN on Tuesday in Abuja, while felicitating with Muslims as they celebrate Eid El Fitri.

“In commemoration of the 2019 Eid El Fitri signalling the end of the Ramadan fast, the APC rejoices with all Muslim faithful and indeed, all Nigerians for the successful completion of the month-long fasting.

“The party implore Muslim Ummah to continue to imbibe the spirit, virtues and lessons of Ramadan which include sacrifice, modesty and discipline in rededicating itself to the task of nation-building.

“We equally admonish Muslims and non-Muslims to cultivate the virtues of tolerance in their relationship with fellow Nigerians and shun all divisive acts and tendencies capable of destabilising the country,” he said.

The APC spokesman added that in the wake of security challenges such as terrorism, armed banditry and kidnapping in parts of the country, Nigerians should remain vigilant and security conscious.

He further added that while being security conscious, Nigerians should report suspicious activity around them to relevant security agencies.

He stressed that President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration holds the protection of lives and property of every Nigerian sacrosanct.

Issa-Onilu assured that the President would not relent in swiftly dealing with real and perceived threats in any part of the country.

He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for peace, progress, stability and prosperity of the country and to grant its leaders at all levels the wisdom to successfully steer the ship of the nation.

Business / Oando: Court Restrains SEC From Removing Tinubu, Boyo by Wisdom58(f): 7:27pm On Jun 03, 2019
https://thickmatch.com/oando-court-restrains-sec-removing-tinubu-boyo/
A Federal High Court has restrained the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from removing Messrs Wale Tinubu and Omamofe Boyo as Oando Plc’s Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) and Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer (DGCEO), respectively.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun sitting in Lagos granted an interim injunction following an application by the embattled GCEO and DGCEO.
The Oando chiefs had applied for enforcement of their fundamental rights.
A copy of the order was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
The court also restrained SEC, its servants or agents from taking any step concerning the commission’s letter dated May 31 in which it barred Tinubu and Boyo from being directors of a public company for five years.
It also restrained the commission from imposing a fine of N91.13 million on Tinubu.
It also ordered that SEC should restrain from all actions on the said letter pending hearing and determination of the applicants’ motion for an interlocutory injunction.
The court also restrained Mr Mutiu Sunmonu from acting as the Head of Oando’s interim management team pending the hearing and determination of the motion.
It also urged the parties to maintain the status quo ante pending the determination of the motion.
The court adjourned the case until June 14.
Recall that SEC on Sunday constituted an interim management team to be headed by Sunmonu for Oando Plc.
In a statement, the commission said that Sunmonu would oversee the affairs of the company and conduct an Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) on or before July 1, to appoint a new board of directors.
It said that the new board of directors would subsequently select a management team for Oando Plc.
The commission reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the stock market.
NAN reports that SEC took the decision following conclusion of a forensic audit of Oando Plc.

Politics / Fulanization Agenda Only Exists On Minds Of PDP, Obasanjo – Kachi Iheme by Wisdom58(f): 7:16pm On Jun 03, 2019
The Senatorial candidate of the Accord Party (AP), for Abia North Senatorial district during the February 23 national Assembly election and now, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Chief kachi Iheme, has slammed the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, over claims that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was pursuing Fulani agenda in the country.

According to him, “You see, it is the nature of the oppositions to cook up baseless allegations against the government in power. But, you and I know that the idea of fulanization/Islamization of Nigeria by the All Progressives Congress-led federal government only exist on the mind of the opposition PDP and their sponsors.
“The President is a detribalized Nigerian. The country is being ran on a democratic platform, and all the institutions of governance are in place. So, the issue of Buhari planning to Islamise Nigeria does not really exist. Buhari just recently told Nigerians that this time, he is going to run an all inclusive government.

“And also, the present federal government has not relented on it’s war against insurgencies and other forms of insecurity. You can see that the APC government has added further impetus to the fight against Boko-Haram insurgents, other than, the lip services that the then PDP government were adopting.

“I urge my fellow Christian faithful to try to christianize Nigeria, by doing what they should do, not adopting money religion. They should all go out and make disciples of Christ from Nigerians, and not crying wolf. Fulanization that isdoes not exist”.

former President Obasanjo had at a church event in Delta State, at the weekend, claimed that the twin evils of Boko-Haram and killer herdsmen were no longer issues of lack of education and employment for our youth in Nigeria, but now a “West African Fulanization, Islamization and global organized crimes of human trafficking, money laundering, drug trafficking, gun trafficking, illegal mining and regime change.”

Politics / State/lga Police: President Buhari Issues Orders To IGP, Ministry Of Justice by Wisdom58(f): 6:13pm On Jun 03, 2019
@thickmatch.com
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Inspector General of Police, Ministry of Justice and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to work out modalities for the implementation of the report of the Presidential Panel on the Reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), within three months.

According to the statement, the President gave the directive while receiving the 2804 page-report from the Panel headed by Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary, NHRC, at the State House.

The report of the Panel, which is in Four Volumes, had among other things recommended the dismissal of 37 police officers from the force and the prosecution of 24 officers.

The Panel also directed the IGP to unravel the identity of 22 officers involved in the violation of human rights of innocent citizens while the police was directed to pay compensation of various sums in 45 complaints and tender public apologies in five complaints, and to obey court orders in 5 matters.

The Panel recommended the establishment of State and local government police and the renaming of SARS to Anti-Robbery Section (ARS) which was its original name and to make the section operate under the intelligence arm of the Police.

Responding, President Buhari said:

‘‘I am very happy with the work of the Panel and thank the Panel members for working hard towards the realization of the Presidential Directive.

‘‘I believe that the Report of the Panel and recommendations contained therein would go a long way in redressing the grievances of the complainants, ensure accountability on the part of the Police Officers in discharging their responsibilities and facilitate the various Police reforms being introduced by this administration.

‘‘I want to assure you and all Nigerians that this Administration will continue to fulfill its obligations of promoting and protecting human rights of Nigerians, and will give the National Human Rights Commission all the support required to ensure full implementation of the recommendations contained in its Report.

‘‘In addition, we will strengthen the operations of the Commission to enhance its effectiveness and capability to resolve cases of human rights violations.

An Abuja-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Ogwu James Onoja SAN, has stated that the creation of state police has become necessary in the face of the security challenges experienced across the country.

Speaking with our correspondent after a Thanksgiving event in Abuja over the escape of his wife from an attack while on her way to Dekina in Kogi State recently, he said some governors have genuine intention to secure their states but that the Nigeria Police lacks equipment to currently secure the country.

He stressed that governors would not manipulate the State Police if the judiciary was strengthened enough to handle abuse of powers by governors.

Describing his wife’s escape from the gunmen attack as a miracle, he said the bullet-riddled SUV was condemned.

“I am doing Thanksgiving because I nearly lost my wife. My wife was brutally attacked.

“On 25th April, 2019, she was ambushed by three set of gunmen on her way to Dekina in Kogi State who shot more than 30 bullets inside the car. I thank God, I didn’t lose her, I didn’t lose Police orderly with her and the driver.

“I am celebrating because if you see the car, you know that it was a miracle that nobody died. You will not believe how people survived.”

While condemning the insecurity in Kogi State, he revealed that all complaints he made to Kogi State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General of Police fell on deaf ears.

“I want to use this opportunity to condemn insecurity in the country especially in Kogi State. I made report to Kogi State Commissioner of Police, nothing happened; I made report to the Inspector General of Police, nothing equally happened.

“Over a month that this thing happened, my wife’s statement has not been taken.

“God is the only one securing this country because if it can happen to me, at this level, then the common people in the society have no hope.

“The common people in the country need to protect themselves. Police are not well equipped to protect the citizens. Police are not well motivated to protect citizens, but where are, they can burst crimes wonderfully.

“They don’t have helicopter to monitor crimes. People should be ready to protect themselves and be each other’s brother’s keeper,” Onoja revealed.

He observed that wealthy citizens have taken over the use of trains which was originally meant for ordinary people, saying that the development would leave road users unprotected.

The senior advocate urged the Federal Government not to retrieve guns from law-abiding citizens, arguing that doing so would further make them vulnerable to attacks.

“Moreso, the issue of recovering gun from law-abiding citizens would be unfortunate because it would leave those not committing crimes unprotected,” he said

Politics / Nigerians Getting Poorer, Change Your Leadership Style –archbishop Onaiyekan by Wisdom58(f): 12:12pm On May 27, 2019
@ Source https://thickmatch.com/second-term-nigerians-getting-poorer-change-leadership-style-archbishop-onaiyekan-tells-buhari/

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has lamented that Nigerians are getting poorer and having a feeling of hopelessness under the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

He urged the President to change his style of leadership if Nigeria must recover from its current social-economic crisis.

Onaiyekan, who stood in for the President, Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, stated this while delivering a message at the inter-denominational church service for the 2019 presidential inauguration ceremony at the National Christian Centre, Abuja over the weekend.

Source https://thickmatch.com/second-term-nigerians-getting-poorer-change-leadership-style-archbishop-onaiyekan-tells-buhari/

Speaking on the theme: “Let us chose life, not death,” Onaiyekan said it was expected that the blame game by the administration was over, adding that, “As we embrace a new term of government, it should be for us a new opportunity to change ways and review habits of governance, for a better Nigeria.

‘’We can and we should do this, God has endowed us with resources to achieve this, resources that we, unfortunately, turn into curses.

“The blame game of pointing accusing fingers at others will not carry us far. For a positive change to take place, we must all be ready for a sincere change of heart, from the lowest to highest, but especially at the highest levels. Empty boast and barefaced denials of the realities around us cannot build the nation.

“At this moment, we should do well to acknowledge our failure to do things the right way. Here, the words of the Psalmist should challenge each of us.

“The truth is that our nation is not in a state for us to rejoice. The ranks of the poor are swelling by the day, hopeless and helpless, as they watch in frustration the affluence of the very few cruising in a different world. Such wide social economic disparity has led to anger, tension, violence and outright criminality in the land. All is not well. But all is not lost either.

“Again, here we must tell the truth. For too long, we have been seeing what seems to be a policy of polarisation of the nation along primordial fault lines of ethnicity and religion. The result is that we have been indulging in the risky game of ’dancing on the brink of chaos’.

“We do not know for how long we can continue to get away with this. But the handwriting on the wall is quite clear for all who cared to see. It is sad that no condition is permanent: certainly not the present state of our nation.

“Our ethnic diversity is God’s will and gift that we ought to appreciate and celebrate. We should beware of those who seek to manipulate this in a game of divide and rule, for selfish interests.

“In our emerging global world, we should be building on our long experience of living together across ethnic lines, if we are not to allow ourselves to be left behind in our fast developing modern world.

“We are living in a world where many are abandoning faith in God, at great cost to humanity now and in the future. We do well to commend ourselves for our generally high level and of religious fervor.

‘’But if this is to translate into a righteous nation, we must all seek the will of God for good human relations. This cuts across our religious differences and affiliations. Religion is good, but not enough.

“Religion evokes a strong emotions that ought to be deployed for solving the ills of our nation, not compound them. Those who manipulate religion for their selfish political interest end up destroying religion and harming the nation. Our constitution is not perfect.

“But its basic provisions about freedom of religion are valid and must be scrupulously respected by all, especially by those who control state instruments of coercion,” said the Archbishop.

Education / Why Do We Celebrate Children’s Day In Nigeria? Origin And History by Wisdom58(f): 10:27am On May 27, 2019
Admit it! Children’s day was the one day you looked forward to the most when growing up bar Christmas day and your birthday. This was because not only were you guaranteed a school free day in some cases but you could always be rest assured of getting some ice cream, cakes or chocolates every May 27th. However, did you ever stop to think about the origin, history and reason behind the Children’s day celebration? Chances are very slim that you might have so let’s take you on a quick journey down memory lane.

History Of Children’s Day

The history of Children’s Day dates back to 1857. Children’s Day was originated by a pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard on the second Sunday of June 1857. He had held a special service which was dedicated to children which was called Rose day. Rose day later got renamed to Flower Sunday and then eventually Children’s day.

Children’s Day then grew in popularity and was first declared a public holiday in the Republic of Turkey on the 23rd of April 1920. Children’s Day also called The International Day for Protection of Children has been celebrated by over 50 countries since 1950 with a lot of them celebrating it on the 1st of June. This was after it had become established by the Women’s International Democratic Federation on the 4th of November 1949.

Children’s Day is not to be confused with Universal Children’s Day which takes place annually on the 20th of November. It was first proclaimed by the United Kingdom in 1954 and had been set up to encourage all countries to pick out a day to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and also to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world’s children.

Children’s Day In Nigeria

May 27 is the date set aside for the celebration of Children’s Day in Nigeria. It is by and large a very significant day in the lives of so many Nigerian children.

On this day every year, most children are granted a holiday from school although Adults are not excused and have to be at work. A lot of social activities are centered around children on this day from converging at stadiums to commemorate the event to parties, events at the park and the visiting of motherless babies homes amongst others.
