Mark Zuckerberg says Elon Musk “isn’t serious” about a cage fight and “it’s time to move on” from their proposed showdown, the details of which were never nailed down.

“Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead,” the Meta chief executive wrote on social platform Threads Sunday.


“If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”

Zuckerberg, 39, had previously proposed August 26 for the fight, but said Musk, 52, hadn’t confirmed.

Last week, Musk wrote that the possible showdown would be streamed on X, formerly known as Twitter, which he owns. Musk said he was “lifting weights throughout the day, preparing for the fight,” adding “all proceeds will go to charity for veterans.”

The Economic Community of West African States on Thursday ordered its standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic.

The President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray made the declaration while reading the resolution of the ECOWAS on the military junta in Niger at the end of the commission’s Extraordinary summit in Abuja.

It also called on the African Union, AU, partner countries, and institutions to support the resolution taken by the sub-regional body.

ECOWAS said all efforts made to dialogue with Niger Republic military junta have been defiantly rejected by coup leaders as they condemn the continuous detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.


The Authority noted that “having considered the memorandum presented by the President of the ECOWAS commission on the current situation in the Republic of Niger, as well as ECOWAS engagement since the last extraordinary summit; and having considered the reports of the envoys of the chair, to Niger and various other places and also carefully considered the report and recommendations of the ECOWAS committee of chiefs of defense staff and extensively discussed the latest development in Niger since the last extraordinary Summit held on 30th July 2023 noted that all diplomatic efforts made by ECOWAS, in resolving the crisis have been defiantly repelled by the military leadership of the Republic of Niger taking note of the expiration of the one-week ultimatum given for the restoration of constitutional order in the Republic of Niger decide as follows:

“Reiterates its strong condemnation of the attempted coup d’etat and the continued illegal detention of President Mohammed Bazoam, his family, and members of his government

“Further condemns the condition in which President Bazoum is being detained and hold the CNSP fully and solely responsible for the safety, security, and physical integrity of President Bazoum, members of his family, and government.

The Federal Government has lamented that the 2nd Niger Bridge may be blocked if miscreants continue to vandalise its metal components.

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Mr. Mahmuda Mamman, stated this on Sunday, when he visited the bridge to ascertain the level of vandalisation.

He called on security agencies to intensity surveillance on the Bridge to curtail the activities of the miscreants, who he said were after the mental components.

He said: “We are here to see the level of vandalisation of the 2nd Niger Bridge. It was an unfortunate situation that all of us woke up to the trending news of vandalisation of some metal components on the bridge.

“This is a massive investment put up by the Federal Government to ease movement of goods and services to Nigeria. To me, free movement is a basic human right and all of us must take collective responsibility to safeguard it.

“We have interfaced with the contractor handling the project, Julius Berger, and it is really unfortunate. The Federal Government has actually done what it is supposed to do.

“We have written to security agencies concerned, asking them to intensify surveillance activities along the road so that such things will not happen.

“At the same time, host communities have a responsibility to play because safeguarding national asserts is not a responsibility of one man; it is a collective responsibility.

“What the miscreants are actually after are the metal components on the bridge; anything metal, the miscreants are after it.

Less than 24 hours to Wednesday’s planned nationwide strike and mass protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress, 16 Northern-based civil society groups under the aegis of the Coalition of Arewa Civil Society Organisations have pulled out on the grounds that the indefinite strike action will damage the fragile economy and cause more hardship to the ordinary citizens.

The NLC had given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum with threats of a nationwide strike scheduled to commence on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, and directed all its affiliates and civil society groups across the 36 states of the federation to mobilise workers and Nigerians for a long-lasting strike should the government fail to meet its demands.

Earlier, the NLC in a statement signed by its National President, Joe Ajaero, had accused the Tinubu government of failing to meet up with the demands it presented to it following the removal of subsidy on petrol.

“But after a critical study of the disadvantages and overall consequences on the masses, we decided to pull out immediately and asked the labour unions and Federal Government to rather embrace dialogue on mitigating measures,” the CSOs stated.

The Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), says it is reconsidering its decision to embark on a nationwide strike on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

The strike is scheduled to begin with a mass protest.

After the rescheduled presidential steering committee on palliatives meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, Emma Ugbaja, general secretary, NLC, said President Bola Tinubu’s announced measures were welcomed although they were not comprehensive enough.

Ugbaja said the labour unions would consult with its members to reach a consensus on the next course of action before the day ends.
